Maia
I was currently on a train bound to the venue of the wedding where I was assigned to work. I’m actually working two jobs at the moment to make ends meet. During the nights and dawns, I’d work in a convenience store in the city. While during the days, I'd work as a photographer.
Some of you might be wondering why I didn’t pursue a career that was pertinent to my course, but it’s quite difficult to go into the field of your dad’s past expertise.
My father was a very rich and famous businessman, and many admired our family for being one of the richest in the country. However, some of my dad’s colleagues joined together to expose his corruption and embezzlement of the company’s funds. From then on, he was forced to give up his enterprises, and we gathered a huge amount of debt. More so than that, our family became the laughing stock of the business industry.
My father, who valued his reputation a lot, couldn&rsqu
Maia“Maia? What are you doing here?” She asked.“Emily?” My voice showed surprise. I looked at her bright blue eyes, dirty blonde hair, and pink lips. Without a doubt, this is Emily. She was one of my close friends in college, and she was the captain of the cheerleading team back then. She was the one I asked for help for my surprise confession for Clyden back then.We both looked at each other in shock before she made the first move to hug me. I was caught off guard for a second that I didn’t know what to do with my hands, but after a couple of seconds, I gently brought my arms around her waist. I didn’t want to ruin her dress, so I didn’t press onto her too hard.“Oh my god, Maia! It is you. You haven’t changed a bit from college,” she said while breaking off the hug.I chuckled. “I could say the same about you.”She looked at my stature and saw the camera aroun
MaiaI looked at her once again as I poured her a cup of water. She was wearing a red dress paired with red heels. I don’t know whether this is her casual outfit or something, but her red dress shined against the hospital light. This is the first time that I’ve seen her in person, and I must say that she looks just like she does on television. All of the stories that I’ve heard about her in the house seem to be true too. Clyden’s grandparents always rave about her for being a well-mannered young woman with a good background. Granted that her parents also own a large enterprise, she naturally became close to Clyden because of the partnership of their businesses.I must have been staring at her for too long because she cleared her throat and turned away from me slightly. I blushed and looked away. “I’m sorry, that was rude of me. Please continue on with your conversation. I’ll be waiting outside.”I walked awa
MaiaAfter a week of waiting and whining, Clyden is finally going to be discharged from Haven Hospital. It's like he gained unbelievable strength on the day of his discharge because he walked out of the hospital all by himself. It made me feel like he was putting up an act for the past few days because I even had to feed him! He's practically prancing out of the hospital right now.Once we reached the exit, Karl was already waiting for us inside a Rolls Royce. Some of the patients and workers looked at the bright and fancy car, so I hastened my steps to avoid their gazes. I opened the door for Clyden and guided him to the back seat. I tried to close the door and enter the passenger's seat, but Clyden held onto my hand before I could do so."You'd have more space for yourself if I sit on the front seat," I said and tried to pull my hand away. However, to my surprise, he also pulled my hand towards him, causing me to fall over on his lap. I quickly got up to see i
MaiaI led Clyden up the stairs, still not forgetting about what he had said earlier. I thought that he’d agree to his grandma’s proposition right away, but I was surprised when he refused right off the bat. My heart was still accelerating from his words, so I had to take in deep breaths to calm my heart and mind.I opened the door to his room and led him to the bed. Yes, this is his solo room. That is one of the many things that he asked for in our marriage— for us to have separate rooms. Actually, the bedroom that I’m currently staying in should have been our shared bed, but he wanted to sleep in a separate room, so he had one built opposite of mine.I fixed his clothes in the closet while he was getting ready to shower in the bathroom. I was busy hanging his pants when he suddenly called my name.“Maia.”I turned around and saw him without a shirt. I screamed in surprise and covered both of my eyes. “Wha
MaiaI finally got back from my six-hour shift, and it was now half-past 7 in the morning. I was in the kitchen, planning to cook breakfast for Clyden, when Gertrude, the Gonzalo family’s head maid, suddenly went inside the kitchen. She looked at the ingredients on the kitchen counter and asked, “What are you doing so early in the morning?”“Oh, I just wanted to cook some breakfast for Clyden,” I responded.I heard her softly scoff and placed some of the ingredients back in the pantry. “Umm, I was going to use that,” I said.“Clyden prefers the food that we cook, Miss Maia. Don’t you remember from back then? He didn't eat at all when you were the one who prepared his breakfast. We were the ones assigned with cooking his breakfast, so you don’t have to bother yourself with this anymore,” she fakely smiled.I retrieved some of the ingredients that she placed back and also fakely
MaiaEdith’s eyes narrowed, and her voice became an octave higher. “What? Why would you go and visit that— that wenc—.”“It’s okay, Clyden. I’m just going in for a quick visit. Besides, the hospital that my mom is in is quite far from the city. You shouldn’t be traveling that far with all your injuries.”Edith didn’t get to finish her sentence because I interrupted her. Although she didn’t get to say the last word completely, I had a feeling of what she was going to call my mom— wench. I know that what we did to their family was awful, but there was no way that I was going to let her call my mother like that.“No, but I really do want to go and visit your mother. I feel bad that you weren’t able to visit her for the past few weeks since you took care of me in the hospital. I think it’s only respectful that I visit her and explain what has happened. Don’t
ClydenI stayed silent for the entire train ride after Maia revealed that her father had already died. For some reason, I felt like she didn’t want to talk about the topic anymore, so I didn’t push it. The silence was getting kind of awkward, so I was glad when we finally arrived at our destination. She held onto my wrists, her small and delicate hands spreading warmth on my cold extremities. The first time I saw her, I had a good feeling of her personality. It feels like she wasn’t one of the many people who only visited me for their personal gain. Moreover, she’s probably one of the prettiest women that I’ve ever seen. When Karl said that she was my wife, I felt happy. It felt like I had a good life even before the accident. However, everything’s just so confusing. I feel like the people in my family are not very fond of Maia. It’s also strange that I haven’t visited my mother-in-law for two years. There a
MaiaClyden and I were currently sitting on the patio of the house with some of his relatives. It was lunchtime, and the maids prepared some of Clyden’s favorite food, so he convinced me to join him during this time. At first, I refused since I still felt pretty awkward with his other relatives. But after finding out that Jasmine and Edith weren’t here, I agreed hesitantly.Although I still feel uncomfortable with some of his relatives, I swallowed my discomfort because Clyden looks so happy eating the food that they have prepared. This is also quite a treat for me since it’s been a while since I’ve eaten these types of food. Lobster, steak, and other expensive food were sprawled out on the table, and I ate them with gusto.I was just about to finish my last piece of lobster when Jasmine and Edith suddenly went out to the patio. Edith looked around the table with a smile on her face, but it turned into a scowl when her eyes landed on me.
Clyden“So, where are you taking Maia today, Clyden?” Maia’s mom, Victoria, asked me once I entered the kitchen. I had just woken up while Maia was still in bed. I know better than to wake her up since she’s going to be grumpy all day if I do.I tilted my head to the side, confused. “Why? Is there a special occasion today?”She dropped her ladle and turned to me with wide eyes. “Did you forget?”“Forget about what?” I asked, still confused. She gasped in surprise and covered her mouth. “Come on. Think about it a little bit more. Today’s the 16th of January.”My eyes went wide when the realization came to me. “Shit,” I cursed under my breath.“Oh god! You really forgot! Haven’t you planned anything?”I shook my head and pulled my hair in anger. How could I forget our wedding anniversary?! What am I going to do now? M
KarlToday is an important day. My boss, Sir Clyden, just asked me for a favor. I refused at first, but when I heard about his reason, I had no choice but to agree.I was standing in a cornfield, talking to Maia about Clyden getting into an accident. This was all a lie, of course. This is just Clyden’s scheme to get Maia running after him like crazy.“Have you finished the call?” Clyden asked, emerging from the cornfield.“Yes, sir,” I said and handed him my work phone. “I’ll be sitting here and waiting for your signal. Just press the home button when you need me to turn all of the lights on.”“Good. Good,” he nodded his head. “Thanks for this, Karl. I’d give you a hefty bonus when we get back.”“Looking forward to it, sir!” I said and bowed.I pulled out my folding chair and placed it in between the corn stems. I scratched the
Maia There he was— Clyden, the love of my life, standing in the very middle of the road. The sun shone down on his face, making him have an indescribable glow. The sun was still shining, but his smile shone even brighter. I felt the wind brushing through my hair, but the cold had long been forgotten. The person right in front of me was the embodiment of the sun, and his warmth emanated just from his gaze, masquerading as a pleasant hug. The sight brought tears to my eyes. I came here knowing that Clyden had gotten in an accident, but this is just as tear-jerking as the thought of him getting hurt. He walked closer to me while I became a blubbering mess. “Why—What… Karl told me that you’re hurt. How could you even walk right now?” I stammered. He pulled me into his chest and comforted me. “Shh, Shh,” he said. “I’m okay. Don’t cry. I’m sorry,” he said while caressing my hair. I looked up at him from his chest and wiped off my tea
Clyden“Sir, when are you going back here? The board directors are already asking where you are!” That was the first thing that Karl said to me when I dialed his number.I sighed. “I know. I know. But I really can’t go there right now. Something very important came up, even much more important than the company.”“Why? What happened, sir?” He asked with a worried voice.I felt a smile creeping up my lips. “I’m going to be a father. Maia’s pregnant.”The line stayed silent for a while, and then I heard some things crashing down on the floor.“Karl, you okay?”“Oh my gosh!” He said in a high-pitched tone which made me raise my eyebrows in surprise. Karl cleared his throat and went back to his normal voice. “No… I mean. Congratulations, sir. It seems like you really have much more important matters to take care of. So, why did you call?&
Maia“I’m home, Maia. I’ve already booked you a check-up with the doctor for your first month of pregnancy.”My eyes widened in shock, and I kept still in my seat, not bothering to look at Clyden. His eyes were burning holes into my skin, but I kept my gaze on my mother, who was coming in.“Mom,” I said in a cautionary voice. However, my mom didn’t even notice the unusual presence in our living room because she kept on talking about my pregnancy.“Are you still having morning sickness? I had the doctor prescribe some medicine for you to help alleviate that. Do you want me to prepare it for you?” She asked.“Mom,” I said louder this time.“I’ve also noticed that you haven’t been sleeping these days. Maybe because Clyden isn’t around. I also had some troubles sleeping when I was pregnant with you and when your father wasn’t around. Maybe you could c
MaiaOkay. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to let Clyden stay here in the house. But, who could blame me? He was so smooth with his words, and he just told me that he loved me despite all of our conflicts in the past. Who wouldn’t fall for that? However, I am slowly regretting it since I couldn't sleep knowing that he was only a few meters away from me. I looked down onto my stomach and caressed it.“I’m sorry if mommy isn’t letting you have any sleep. Your daddy’s sleeping outside, so mommy’s nervous,” I softly whispered.Suddenly, the door opened, and I got a bit frightened. I held onto my chest and propped myself up with one elbow.“What the hell! You scared me!” I said, still holding onto my heart. He smiled sheepishly while holding the door open. “Sorry.”I sighed and leaned back on my side. “What do you want?” I asked. He let out a deep breath
MaiaI jolted awake when I heard that there was someone knocking on the door. I opened my phone and flinched when its bright light hit me.11:42 PMWho the heck would be knocking on my door at almost 12 AM in the morning? Unless...My eyes widened in surprise as I thought of all the worst-case possibilities. No one in their right mind would knock on my door unless they were planning on mugging me.My mom also isn’t here since she’s staying in the hospital for some assessments. What perfect timing! The person kept knocking on my door, and I was getting more anxious by the minute. I looked around to see if I could use anything as a weapon and sighed in relief when I saw a piece of wood near the closet.I walked slowly towards the piece of wood and held it firmly with my hands. The person’s knocks were getting even louder and louder, causing me to move more swiftly.Suddenly, the knocks stopped, but the anxiousne
ClydenI was already in the airport, waiting for my flight to be called. I tapped my foot on the floor in both nervousness and excitement. I was excited to see Maia and hold her in my arms once again, but I’m also unsure whether she’ll even speak with me. I'm even unconfident that she'll let me inside of her house! I just hoped that she’d give me the chance to explain myself.I looked at my watch and saw that it was only a few minutes until my flight is due. Eager to get on the plane right away, I stood up and waited right in front of the doors.I waited for the exact time of my flight, but not a single reminder resonated in the airport. I frowned. The flight’s already due. Why isn’t anyone opening the doors?Just then, someone spoke into the intercom, and I felt relieved for a second.“Good day, passengers! Today is a very special day since our pilot himself has something to say.”I frowned in confu
ClydenI was all alone in my office because Karl had to set out to the address that I gave to Edith and Jasmine. I told him to make the place as unlivable as possible since they were the reason why I wasn’t able to answer Maia’s call.I was still staring down at my phone, hoping that Maia would call once again when someone knocked on the door.Is Karl already back? That was fast.“Come in,” I mindlessly said, still staring down at my phone.“Did you trash that place like I told you to? You came back earlier than expected, so I’m worried whether you were able to—”I paused when I felt an unusual presence in the room. I looked up, expecting to see Karl, but I saw the person that I never would have expected to find in my office. A tall blonde figure hovered over me, and I looked up to him with a frown.“Lucas? What the hell are you doing here? Why didn't the front desk inf
