"Are you sure this will work?" Chris asked, sounding very uncertain.

"Absolutely," Ethan replied with determination.

"Absolutely not," I immediately objected, crossing my arms and gazing out the window.

I saw Amelia and Ivan looking at me from that side of the room. I assumed that Ethan and Christopher were also watching me. I would not allow them to risk this, even if Ethan's plan might work. I didn't want them getting into more trouble.

"Why not?" my boyfriend asked.

"Are you really on board with this, Chris?" I ignored Ethan and looked directly at Christopher.

"Well..." he hesitated.

"You don't have to do it if you don't want to, Christopher. I understand, it's your father."

"What?" Ethan exclaimed incredulously.

"Ethan, you can't force Chris to be an accomplice in a plan that will send his father to jail," I stated firmly.

He narrowed his eyes and gave me a challenging look.

We fell into silence, having one of our intense silent staring matches. How could I allow him to do somethi

Ethan looked at me, and I noticed a certain sadness in his eyes. I felt bad for interrupting our important conversation, but I couldn't just kick Isabela out of my house. He apologized and slipped into his room, leaving Isabela and me in the living room. My friend looked at me strangely because of his reaction, and I shrugged, blatantly lying that I didn't know what was wrong with him.My friend asked me to tell her everything that had happened in her absence. I took a deep breath and began my narrative, as it was quite long.It felt as if I were telling a fantasy story to a little girl because every time I said something, Isabela made facial expressions of astonishment, happiness, sadness, and anger. When I finished the story, her final expression was one of deep concern."How are you feeling?" She tried to reach her hand toward my abdomen.I lifted my shirt to show her the bandage."Better, although I'm still on complete bed rest. I'm dying here, Isa," I made a mockingly terrified f

I sighed once more. My gaze was fixed on the ceiling of my room, illuminated only by the moonlight filtering through the window. One of my hands was stretched across the bed, and the other rested on my stomach.I took deep breaths with each inhalation, my pillow smelled like him...My father had prepared an exquisite dinner for us a few hours earlier, but I didn't have much of an appetite. I truly couldn't understand what had happened that afternoon. What the hell had happened? I still felt bewildered. Why had he left like that? I tried to explain why I couldn't accept the engagement now, that I didn't feel prepared. Why couldn't he understand that?I rolled onto my right side. I faced the wall. I wanted to call him, to fix everything, to tell him I loved him, that I desired him...I tensed up."I love you," those words echoed in my head. He had never said he loved me before.I kicked my feet on the bed. Why did he have to say it now? Damn it, why so much pressure?I took a deep breat

He walked me to the car; I didn't feel like continuing the exercise. Besides, the wound had started to hurt since I fell.We continued talking about trivial things and relaxed a bit. I noticed that when we said goodbye, he seemed in much better spirits. He asked about Ethan, and I briefly mentioned what had happened between us and why we hadn't been talking for a while.Christopher assured me that we hadn't broken up because Ethan never told him about it. I didn't feel very convinced but pretended to make him feel better. When I left the park and dropped off Christopher, my two friends had invited me to have lunch. I hadn't realized I had spent the entire morning in the park with that guy. When I arrived at the restaurant where my friends had asked me to meet them, I looked for them from the entrance.Isabela waved at me from a corner of the restaurant. I smiled and approached them. The place was quite picturesque; the tables and chairs were made of the same dark oak material, there w

I was in a state of shock, the word that could describe me in that moment. Christopher was looking at us with concern; his leg was moving up and down at a high speed. He was anxious, almost as anxious and worried as Ethan. He paced back and forth around the room with his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze fixed on his feet. I sat on the couch, covering my face with both hands. For some strange reason, George, Chris's father, who many years ago had ordered the assassination of Ethan's father to take control of the company that interested them so much, had recently attempted to destroy my father's company using codes that I still didn't understand their purpose. To make matters worse, less than two months ago, he had kidnapped Ethan and me to an unknown location, which had resulted in an urgent trip to the hospital due to a gunshot wound in my abdomen. All of that, coupled with the fact that this same man believed that his son and I were together.I swallowed hard and sat up straigh

He blinked several times, as if not comprehending what I was saying. He uncrossed his arms but remained in his place, so I continued."Do you think that disappearing, not answering my calls, and ignoring me for over a month is synonymous with not losing me, with 'protecting' me? I don't even know if we're still together or not."There was a deafening silence."I'm sorry," he whispered."Sorry? Is that all you can say?" My voice was rising more than I intended, but I no longer cared. I had so much inside me that I didn't know if it was necessary to waste my breath telling him everything. I turned to leave, but stopped and faced him again."I don't care if you agree to let me participate in the plan. I'm going to do it whether you like it or not. I don't want you to speak to me again. We'll only discuss the plan, and when all of this is over, I want you to really disappear. Don't come back, understood?"I didn't wait for a response; I turned and left the room, slamming the door behind m

Chris took my hand across the table, interlacing his fingers with mine affectionately.I smiled and glanced to the side, feeling a bit embarrassed. Chris offered a seductive smile and whispered a joke in my ear, making me laugh. It wasn't because the joke was good, but rather because it was so bad that it was funny. He then assumed a more serious posture, and I could hear him licking his lips. I felt his fingers caressing my hand. The ambient music in the restaurant created a very romantic atmosphere for a young couple. The tables were filled with people engrossed in their own conversations, oblivious to their surroundings.I was close enough to Chris that any onlooker might assume we were on a date. The night had arrived, and my house was a mess with all the things we needed to bring to the party.Ivan and Amelia were dressed elegantly. Amelia wore a long, shiny dark blue dress that reached her feet, covering just one shoulder. Ivan had a gray tuxedo with a white shirt.Isabela and Ethan were dressed as waiters for the party, Chris wore a black tuxedo with a white shirt underneath, and I was elegantly dressed in an emerald green strapless dress that was snug to my waist and then cascaded to the floor.Ethan and Isabela had left a few hours earlier to assist in organizing everything with the service George had hired. I wasn't sure how she managed to get them hired to work as waiters at that particular party.Ivan and Amelia left about 30 minutes ahead of us to avoid raising suspicions that we were arriving together. They took their van with all the items they needed.Chris and I were escorted in a limousine to George's mansion. They lived in an extremely upscale neighborhood, with

Chris stepped back a bit, looking doubtful. He seemed confused, and rightly so."Why?" he asked."The 'why' is not very clear to me, but I really need you to kiss me now," I replied.Chris moved a little closer to me, and I instinctively pressed against the wall. He placed his left arm behind my waist, and I nervously bit my lower lip."Are you sure?" he asked once more, his eyes capturing my attention."Yes," I answered.Chris lowered his gaze to my lips and then looked back at me, smiling. "You shouldn't let anger get the best of you, brother," I tried to advise him."Oh, of course not, that's not going to happen," he murmured, sipping the remnants of his drink."The point is, you should calm down, go and expand your social networks just like she...""She doesn't expand her social networks; she's known him since she was seventeen!" he shouted in frustration, but I continued to look at him impassively."You should relax," I said with a shrug, finding it impossible to understand his nervous breakdown.Wasn't it his idea? He should just speak the truth, express his true feelings, and that's it.I know it's easier said than done, but it was the best way out instead of going around throwing punches."Is he holding her hand?" he asked through gritted teeth. Valentine's Day had finally arrived.Daniel was a bundle of nerves, and spending the day helping him clean his house and prepare the dinner for the evening was getting on my nerves too.I didn't want to prepare anything for that day with Ethan because I knew, thanks to my brother-in-law, that he was planning a surprise for me, a surprise that I hadn't discovered yet. When we finished the preparations, Daniel accompanied me back home. Upon arriving, I saw that Ethan was at home. That surprised me."What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at work?" I looked at him in doubt."Today is a special day. Did you really think I'd forget it and work until so late?" He put his hands on my waist to pull me closer."No, you never forget this day, and you always have some surprise for me." I hugged him, resting my head on his shoulder."Do you want to know your surprise?" Our gazes connected."I should be the one surprising you." I was immensely excited to see them since I hadn't seen them for several weeks. They had been on their honeymoon, and I wasn't expecting them back for another couple of days. Behind them were Iván and Amelia.Delia let them all in and appeared in the living room just behind them."Minnie!" Chris said excitedly."Why are you here so early?" I asked, genuinely confused by their early arrival."Do you think we'd leave you alone on our beautiful godson's birthday?" Isabela said."To be honest, yes. You were on your honeymoon," I admitted with a shrug."And? We decided to come back early, plus with this woman, every day feels like a honeymoon," Chris said, looking at Isabela with love, putting his arm around her waist and pulling her close. She smiled and pushed him away a bit, giggling. I smiled happily."But you know, the party starts in an hour," I said apologetically for them arriving so early.Chris looked at Isabela, who looked at Iván, and then their gaze moved to Amelia."I thought

Three years later..."Minerva, hurry up, we're going to be late!" I heard Ethan's voice from downstairs.I rolled my eyes and finished adjusting my hair and dress. However, when he saw me, he smiled in a way that I adored.I descended the stairs and stopped on the last step, so I was at eye level with him. This day was very special because my father was finally returning from his annual business observation trip around the world. Esther stood still for a moment, as if waiting for a sign or something. In the background, you could see their house, and she was sitting on the couch that used to belong to her father, according to what Ethan had told me. Esther was wearing a dress that I had given her on one of the many times I had dinner at her place."Is it recording?" Esther pointed at the camera. The image wobbled slightly, as if the person recording didn't have a steady hand."Yes, Mom," Daniel's voice sounded with irritation."Don't answer me like that, young man," she scolded him and narrowed her eyes, looking beyond the camera.I chuckled and saw Daniel by my side, shrinking in his seat."I'm sorry, Mom. We've already had five takes; they could arrive any moment, and the surprise will be ruined."Daniel sighed with nostalgia, as if he were remembering that day."Well, all right. I took a deep breath, looking at myself in the mirror.I adjusted the white dress I was wearing and looked at my friends. Isabela was sitting on a sofa in the room, holding a glass of wine in her right hand, gazing at me intently. Both of them were wearing pale pink dresses that hugged their bodies, with small straps supporting the dress and accentuating their chests. They had their hands on their hips, inspecting me from head to toe.In a way, the three of us had changed. My hair was a bit shorter than before, although at that precise moment, it wasn't noticeable since I had it tied up with a bow and a braid. Amelia kept her hair the same length as before and had it straightened this time, pulled into a high ponytail. The three of us still shared the same height and the same skin tone.I turned to look at myself again in the mirror in front of me. The dress was bigger than I had imagined, slightly constricting around my stomach, which was bothering me a bit near the abdominal wound,

I paced back and forth in the living room of my house, extremely nervous.I glanced at my father's closed office door once more. I then sat down on the largest sofa in the room, placing both hands on my knees. It was a fairly sunny day, with a few clouds in the sky, but it was overall a bright blue day. My house was clean, thanks to the cleaning I had done the day before in preparation for today. My house looked the same as before. The dining area was in front of a large window with a panoramic view of the city. Next to it was the guest bedroom door, where Ethan had stayed the first time he visited. In front of me was the TV, with two individual sofas on each side. To the left, there was a wall with an opening leading to the kitchen, which was spotless. The stairs were behind me, and the front door was in the opposite corner of the same wall. You could see the upstairs from where I was sitting, as there was a glass and black metal railing that allowed you to see halfway down the hallw

I released my friends' hands and sat next to Daniel."Hello," I murmured."Hello, Minnie," he responded sleepily."How do you feel?" I smiled with a hint of sadness."Tired. Now, it's time for you and my brother to make amends. Go on, what are you waiting for?"Daniel smiled at me with all the sincerity his tired eyes could muster, and he got up. I followed suit. We hugged, and Daniel joined my friends. I approached them too."Take him to my house and tell my father what happened. Ask him to let Daniel sleep in my room, please."My friends nodded and gave me a hug. I hugged Iván tightly, and he smiled at me.
