She never loved the spotlight, she always did what she could to avoid it, but life had a twisted way of giving her the middle finger.

A few partners of the company came up to meet them congratulating and appreciating Cainan’s leadership of the company for the last eight years, and after shaking hands and after holding a smile on her face for forty minutes straight, she grew weary.

“Bored already?” she heard Cainan’s voice, and she snapped out of her zoning.

Her mouth twitched to the side. “Yeah, never been so bored around so many rich people before.” she murmured and she meant it.

The only time she ever felt excited to be around so many rich people was when she was hoping to steal a thing or two from them, but not doing that and only listening to their business talk was as boring as watching herself twerk in the mirror.

“What are the things that excite you then?” he asked with an interest fi

The turn of events today was not what she expected, and she needed to breathe. She needed to be in her own space, and the bathroom felt like the only place she could do that. She entered and close the door before leaning against it. Her eyes flutter and she remained silent, mentally trying to clear her head of all the what-ifs playing around in it regarding Lisa and Xavier. “Did you see her?” a feminine voice asked with a disgusted tone of voice, causing jasmine’s eyes to snap open. “For a moment I thought that wasn’t Mr inferno talking.” “I know right, they can’t possibly be dating. She looks more like a leash if you ask me.” the second voice which had a higher pitch than the first added in agreement. Jasmin didn’t have to be told to know the worthless women at the other stall were gossiping about her and her relationship with Cainan, and just like that, her ‘alone time’ just flew out of the window. &n

The rest hour that passed before the end of the night, she felt the coldness in him, especially towards her; he masked it up as he interacted with the other guest and a few partners, but there was a change in him and she knew it. Cainan handed the farewell speech over to Daniel Howard, one of the top board members, and then the rest, bidding to the General manager Steve Jefferson. He took Jasmin’s hand and quietly led her away towards the awaiting Lexus, and they both got in before the driver drove them off. Jasmin knew this was one of his ways of shutting things away and never revisiting them. He was so fond of doing that, and she didn’t want him doing that to this as well. She didn’t want them to move on and act as though nothing happened. Something happened. He saw her with his mother’s purse and was probably thinking the very worse of her. “I am truly so

“I know you have little to no knowledge of art, but thank you for coming with me, Jasmin,” Lisa said as she held onto Jasmin’s hand and walked her through the security checkpoint at the art gallery. “It’s fine, besides this is far better than the plans I had for tonight, which was nothing,” she answered and they goggled together. Lisa had called a few hours ago, asking if she was free to come out with her. Charming was showcasing some of her recent work to the public and though Zoe, her friend, or Xavier, her boyfriend, would have been the better date for the day event, they all had excuses. Zoe's excuse was that Victor was taking her out on a town fare and Xavier said he was having a business meeting with partners from outside the country and as much as he wanted to, he couldn’t come. Jasmin was Lisa’s last option, but it didn’t upset her because she did not know what an art display was all about over an hour ago. Lisa needed a plus one and Ch

After helping Lisa get her anxiety pills from her bag, the officer on duty locked the bars of the cell and walked away from where Lisa and Jasmin were. Lisa had not even said a thing to Jasmin since they were arrested over an hour ago and Jasmin felt guiltier with every minute she spent in silence. She didn’t mean to drag Lisa into her mess, but she had punched Faith without realising that the ladies with her were going to come to attack her along with Faith. Lisa wasn’t a fighter, couldn’t stand and watch the ladies all gang up on Jasmin, and so she came to her rescue. Unfortunately for them, two police cars were patrolling the premises ofthe premises of the art gallery and as soon as they saw the throw down, taking place, they intervened and arrested all of them for violence in the street. This wasn’t the first time she was getting arrested. She had been arrested when she was sixteen, but unlike that time, she

A few days later, “And we are here,” Cainan announced as he offered Jasmin his hand and she took and stepped out of the car to see and appreciate the magnificent mansion before her. Well designed that it sent her into a state of awe. She had never been to his place, so when he invited her over for dinner, she accepted without hesitation because she wanted to know where he lived and also because the invitation was long overdue. Though they started dating months ago, Cainan had never found the perfect time to bring her over because of their work and other events surfacing. Today, however, was one day she closed early from work and Cainan thought it was the perfect time to bring her over to his humble abode so they could spend some quality time together. After the incident that took place five days ago on their way back from the police station, things had become awkward for the both of them. Flashback On seeing Cainan stand

They stepped into the mansion and what she saw blows her away even as she clung onto his arm. But unlike before, she tried to hide her excitement because a few maids were walking around on the inside compared to when they were outside and she didn’t want to embarrass him before them by acting like a giddy twelve-year-old. He lived in a mansion, but never treated her first place as less when he first came to visit, even though when equated to her, her place was less. It was one of the few things she liked about him. “You’ve got a lovely place, Mr Inferno,” she complimented as he led her towards the dining area where they were an array of about seven chairs around the massive dining table. “Well thank you, Ms Whyte.” “Why are they seven chairs around the table, though?” she curiously asked, taking a seat pulled out by Cainan and sitting down. “Long story.” “I got time,” she replied and dramatically glanced at her b

“You’re right, that man is an ass,” Anita cussed as she stepped into the kitchen and it caused a few heads of the waiter’s as well as cooks to turn to her. She sighed and placed her hand on her hip, “I didn’t mean to startle anyone and I am sorry if I did.” “What man is that?” Jasmin asked as she fitted the spring roll into the box and placed it on the tray. “Who else? Ass hat Jude!” she cussed again. Jasmin's brow pulled together at her friend’s displeasure. “What did he do this time?” “Be an ass like always and he wouldn’t let me take his order and insisted that you do it.” She replied and placed her hands on the counter and leaned against them. “I told him you were busy, and he said he wouldn’t mind waiting and when I was taking my leave, he called me a bitch.” Jasmin’s teeth clenched together and picked up her tray before storming off, she ser

As the day ended, she made her way towards the park in search of Cainan, just like she had done since they started dating. She knew he would be pleased to find out she had quit her job, he would be ecstatic, as though he was the very cause of it. Jasmin got to the park, but his car was nowhere to be found. It was weird and so unlike him to be late and she brought her phone out and saw if there was any message from him that pointed to him being absent, but there was no message from him either. She turned her phone off and slipped it into her small purse, and walked off. She should have accepted his offer for a driver when he made it over a month ago, at least that way situations like these would never happen. After about three minutes of walking... more of dragging her way because of the pregnancy and the stress of the day, she felt like she was being followed. She turned and looked, but

A few days later, Jasmin was holding onto a bunch of lily flowers and she wore a long silver gown that littered with every move she made. Lisa told her it was going to give her the best look two days ago, and she believed. Cainan was in a black tux and red bow tie and sat in his wheelchair, awaiting her arrival at the altar. He was taking Rogue’s advice and also grooming a beard and a few stubbles were on his face. Jasmin told Cainan she wanted to be married to him a few days ago at the hospital and despite being confined in bed, Cainan moved to plan for the wedding, which would be a small one with only family and friends. After they released him from the hospital, the doctor gave strict instructions that he made use of the wheelchair to help heal and restore him to his full strength before walking and so he had done in these past days while planning the wedding. Coming out to Ada abou

The stillness within and without was the first thing Cainan took notice of as he regained consciousness and soon after, his lashes lifted and he beheld a blurry shadow pacing around not so far away. What a very weird dream he had had, being chased around with Jasmin and then shot and stabbed. He made out the white painted walls, ceiling and blue curtains hanging on the window through his dimmed vision and his head did a mental recall of the event that might have led to this, but came up short. The clearer his vision became, the harder his head ached, and he shut his eyes as the pain in his head grew worse. “Shit!” he cussed and groaned loudly. How the hell did he end up here? “Cainan,” he heard Ada’s voice snapping him out of his thoughts, and a moment later she took his hand in hers. “Oh, thank goodness you’re finally awake.” She breathed in relief and took her seat

Dennis dragged Jasmin out of the house and into her car before forcing her to drive them away from the house. They drove past a few security points and each time, Jasmin played it cool and smiled her way through each line of questioning they had for her. She obeyed Dennis and did nothing that would spook suspicion for the safety of her unborn child even though she couldn’t imagine going back to the nightmare of a life she once had, filled with fear, abuse, and pain. “Where are the rest of the team?” she asked, a little curious as they left the last checkpoint. Dennis did nothing without his team, which comprised three other wealth exchangers, and Jasmin sensed something was up with their absence. “Dead.” He flatly replied, his eyes on the road. “I lost them a few days ago, during a heist.” Her eyes dropped. “I’m sorry.” She mumbled quietly, but she was not surprised. The life they lived was a dangerous one, which was why she wanted to leav

"Stop!" she exclaimed in panic, holding her trembling hands up in surrender and her heart slammed away in her chest in fear. "I will do what you want, just don't hurt her." Her eyes blurred up and her lips quivered. She knew better than to call bluff on his threats. He halted and uncocked the gun before turning to meet her glassy, and now desperate, eyes. And what he saw pleased him. "That's my girl, so obedient." he cooed. "Your good heart never leads you astray. Now bring out your phone and call your lover boy. You need to make sure that your words are believable because Lisa isn't out of the woods yet." Afraid, angry and defeated, she pulled out her phone from her purse on the couch and dialled Cainan's number. After the third dial, with no answer from Cainan, she lowered the phone from her ear, mumbling. "He's not answering, usually he answers..." The words were barely out of her mouth when the doorbell went

Somehow, Dennis, an intruder, had found his way in and now sat on Lisa's adjustable chair at the corner of the living room in black hood and trousers, and an evil smirk at the side of his lips like he owned the place.A million questions ran through Jasmin's head as she speechlessly stared at him. What did he want? How did he find her?Where's Lisa? What did he do to her?Despite the question running through her head, all she could utter became his name."Dennis."He puffed the rest of the smoke into the air. Jasmin stayed in the restroom for a few minutes and so much had already happened in her absence. She didn’t mind that he worked with Vanessa. Being a big girl meant not crying, not throwing tantrums, and lastly, not jumping to conclusions. What she didn’t understand was why they had to be so fond of each other. Cainan reached for her hands and affectionately took them into his. He said something that made Vanessa’s eyes widen and disbelief spread across her face. She threw her arms around Cainan and hugged him tightly before pulling away, the wide smile still on her face. Jasmin’s eyes blurred up, and she grew sick in her stomach. She wanted to leave. She needed to leave now. She blinked back the tears from her eyes and with all the composure she possessed; she made her way over towards him, dragging her leg with her, and soon she was beside the two happy couple. ‘Easy, Jasmin, remember things are not always what they seem, take the advice you

Jasmin and Cainan were invited on a double date with Alex and Rogue’s at the Pearl lounge and though reluctant at first about going, Cainan back her against the wall literally and she had no other choice but to scream yes. She had stopped going to the restaurant because, according to Cainan’s calculations, this was her delivery week and she needed not to stress herself. He always made an interesting argument with his mouth. She needed this, though; she had stayed home in the last two days and despite almost always being connected with Anita and Andrew to keep up with progress; yet she was running crazy. Meeting Alex and Rogue was a breath of fresh air. They were a pair, madly I love with each other and barely able to keep their eyes off each other. Their son Rayge was sixteen months old, and he was being watched by Gloria, his nanny so that they could have time for themselves. Alex shared the beauty of being a mother, and also the pain. Jasmin noticed Anita was taking a longer time than usual in getting the end of the month’s account files over to her office and tiring of waiting, she made her way to her office, which was the next office after hers. The door to her office was unlocked, and she pushed further and entered the office, but slowed down on her step when she heard whimpers coming from the corner of the bathroom. She tried waiting out the whimpers but after a minute and Anita not coming out; she headed over to the bathroom and carefully opened it.The sight she saw was heartbreaking. Anita was sitting on the covered toilet with her head buried in her palms and she was sobbing into it. It was a shocking sight to Jasmin because she had known Anita for so long but had never seen her broken, sad or even upset. The highest emotion she had seen her display was anger, which happened once in a while. Anita was always happy and positive, and she feared what might have changed
