Chapter 3

Author: Sathara
Frida stood at the edge of that huge bed with silk cotton sheets, clutching her phone between her hands. Her blue dress draped over her frame, and her hair cascaded down her shoulders. She was nervous, every instinct urging her to run, but the deal was too good to pass up, and time was a luxury she didn’t have.

Suddenly, her phone rang. She immediately recognized the number and quickly answered, fighting to keep her tears from ruining her makeup.

“Mommy?” The sweet voice that brightened her days made her heart ache.

“My darling... How are you feeling?” Frida asked, trying to keep her voice steady, not wanting to worry Emma.

“I’m fine, but I miss you,” her daughter said, her voice tinged with sadness. It was the first night Frida wouldn’t be by her side at the hospital.

“I miss you too, my love. My sweet baby,” she whispered, her heart breaking. The pain was unbearable, almost as though it might explode from her chest.

“When is Daddy coming to see me? I miss him too…”

Frida’s pain twisted, morphing into something darker, laced with resentment. The memory of what had happened in Gary’s office flashed in her mind. She had no idea how to answer. It was clear he wasn’t coming back, not even for his daughter.

“I... I don’t know, sweetheart.”

“But... he’ll come, right?” Emma’s voice was filled with a quiet suspicion, almost as if she already knew the truth about her father’s abandonment.

“He’s been very busy with work, that’s why he can’t come. But when he gets the chance…” She trailed off, not wanting to give her daughter false hope.

“He’ll come when he’s free, won’t he?”

“My love, I... I need to go. I have to talk to my future boss, and...” Frida’s words faltered, guilt weighing down her voice. Emma was just a little girl, but Frida knew she was smart enough to sense what was really going on.

“Yeah, I understand,” Emma said, her voice soft and sad. “I love you, Mommy.”

“And I love you, my darling. With all my heart,” Frida replied, her strength crumbling, but she knew she had to keep going for Emma’s sake.

She held the phone to her ear for a few moments after the call ended, letting the silence wash over her. Then, the door to the room opened, making her jump in fright. The maid who had gotten her into this mess stood there, a smug smile on her face.

“Are you ready?” The maid extended her hand, her smile barely masking her satisfaction. Despite her doubts, Frida took her hand, and they left the room together.

“You look beautiful. He’s going to love you.”

“This is insane,” Frida muttered, biting her lip. “What’s Mr. Gilbert like?”

“Horrible,” the maid said with a wide grin. “Old and unattractive. He has to buy a wife, doesn’t he?”

A chill ran down Frida’s spine. The thought of having to please a disgusting, lecherous old man for money made her sick. But would she do it for Emma? The answer was a resounding yes.

They arrived at a grand dining room, set for what appeared to be a romantic dinner—dim lighting, fine china, silver cutlery, and a bottle of wine waiting to be opened. Frida walked around the table, her fingers brushing the backs of the chairs while Roman watched her from the shadows.

“She’s beautiful, but not exactly what you specified. Twenty-five, divorced, with a seven-year-old daughter,” his lawyer had told him after reviewing Frida’s file.

‘She seems desperate for a job. Desperation makes for a loyal pawn,’ Roman had thought, pleased with his luck.

He had then ordered the search to end. He had found his woman—beautiful, desperate, and with a need only he could fulfill. Roman loved nothing more than having control over the situation, and right now, he felt that he had complete control over this vulnerable, needy woman. All he needed now was for her to sign the contract.

Frida soon felt someone else’s presence in the room. The maid had left her alone, so it had to be him, her future husband. She was terrified to turn around, afraid his appearance would horrify her. She didn’t want to offend him.

She spun on her heels, her worried expression giving way to shock. The maid had lied. He wasn’t horrible at all. In fact, he was much taller than her and had a rugged, cold face that sent a shiver down her spine in a way she didn’t entirely hate. Broad shoulders and piercing dark eyes that seemed to reach into her very soul... he was devastatingly handsome!

“Frida Moore?” Roman’s deep, rumbling voice filled the room as he swirled a glass of wine in his hand. “Roman Gilbert.”

“Pleased to meet you, Mr. Gilbert,” Frida replied, struggling to keep her voice steady.

“I know I’m older than you, but let’s drop the formalities, shall we? After all, we’ll be quite close soon enough,” he said, handing her the contract. “I understand you have a young daughter who’s very ill.”

“She needs surgery urgently. She has a brain tumor that’s growing, and…” Frida stopped, her hands trembling as her eyes filled with tears.

“I’ll handle everything your daughter needs. We’ll take her to the best hospital, and I’ll pay for the finest surgeon. Whatever it takes to make her well.” Roman stepped closer, his eyes locked on her, the dim light catching the glimmer of desperation in her eyes. “All I ask in return is for a realistic relationship. You’ll marry me and give me a child as soon as possible.”

“Why me?” Frida asked, confused yet drawn to Roman like a moth to a flame. Her fingers tingled with the urge to reach out and touch his face, to make sure he was real.

“Because you need this. Am I wrong?” He gestured for her to sit.

“Is this charity, or are you just ensuring that the woman you choose is bound to you by her need?” She smiled bitterly, her fists trembling.

“Does it matter?” Roman sat back in his chair, watching her with a proud, almost triumphant gaze. “Do you want my help? Then sign the contract.”

“You act like the powerful man you are, but exploiting someone’s pain is a terrible way to start.” Frida glared at him, her teeth clenched.

What did she expect? Love from a stranger? A powerful businessman like him would only think about his own gain, trampling anyone in his way. She’d already learned that from Gary.

“If you don’t like it, don’t sign. You can leave. I don’t even need the dress back—it looks good on you.” Roman stabbed at his food with a fork, his gaze daring her.

“I’ll sign. Not for me, but for my daughter. If it were up to me, I’d tear this contract to shreds, throw this stupid dress in your face, and leave without looking back,” Frida spat as she signed page after page while Roman watched her with amusement.

“Well, I’m glad I made the right choice,” he said, grinning wider as he took the contract from her hands. “I hope dinner will lighten your mood.”

“I don’t want dinner. I’m not hungry,” Frida said, standing up from the table.

“Are you serious?” Roman tried to hide his grin, but the angrier she got, the more he seemed to enjoy it.

“I want to go to bed,” she said, staring him down, her defiance surprising him.

“Fine. I’ll take you to the room you’ll be sharing with me.”

“Just tell me where it is. I’ll find it myself.”

“I don’t think so. The house is too big, and you’ll get lost.” He stood, adjusting his jacket, and offered her his arm—not out of chivalry, but to test just how proud she could be.

With stiff reluctance and without meeting his gaze, she took his arm, and he led her upstairs to her new room.

“This is where we’ll be staying,” he said, opening the door for her. “I can have one of the maids bring you something to eat.”

“No need. I’m not hungry,” Frida replied, still seething.

“Fine. Enjoy the room tonight. Because starting tomorrow, you’ll be sharing it with me.”

Frida was curious where Roman would sleep tonight, but she didn’t ask. She let the door close behind her, leaving her in a silence so deep it only worsened her despair. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she broke down in tears, thinking of little Emma and all that she would have to endure to save her. The thought of that man having complete control over her now made her stomach churn.

Outside the room, Roman leaned against the wall, listening to Frida’s quiet sobs. The sound stirred a flicker of pity in him. He wasn’t entirely sure if he would have a docile wife, but he knew one thing for certain—he had a wounded woman by his side. Ignoring his urge to go in and comfort her, he decided to head to his study instead. Losing himself in work would keep him distracted. After a while, the sound of a knock on the door startled Frida. She was already in her silk nightgown, ready to sleep in the bed that still carried Roman’s scent.“Come in...” she called, half expecting it to be him, ready to share the bed. But it wasn’t. Instead, it was that all-too-familiar maid.“Hello!” the maid greeted her with a broad smile as she entered, carrying a tray of food. “I’m Lory, by the way. I thought you’d be hungry, so I brought you something to eat.”“Actually, I’m not hungry at all...” Frida replied.“You really should eat. It’s not good for your health to skip meals.”“I should

“So... you’re requesting an early discharge for the patient, Emma Miller?” the nurse asked, surprised.“Yes. I’m transferring her to another hospital,” Frida replied, feeling a knot tighten in her stomach.During the drive, Roman had been clear. “Emma will be moved to the neurology hospital today. The doctor in charge there is excellent. She’ll know what to do.” Frida was shocked. It wasn’t the first time she had heard of that hospital. She knew it had an excellent reputation and incredibly high cost. Still, it was nothing compared to Roman’s wealth.“I’ve already spoken with the hospital director, Dr. Bennet,” Roman said, approaching Frida. “Dr. Sofia Dunn will take over Emma’s case as soon as we arrive.”“Understood,” Frida replied nervously, feeling more bound to her side of the deal than ever before. They headed straight to Emma’s room. As soon as Frida opened the door and saw her daughter, her face lit up with pure joy, a detail that Roman did not miss.“My darling!” Fri

“I’m only going to say this once. You’re an incredibly capable woman who doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice whatever it is for her daughter. Do you know how many women would have abandoned their children for far less? What you need to do is use that damn pride of yours productively and show the world who you are.”Frida listened to every word, feeling the tears flow freely down her cheeks. How could someone as cold and arrogant as him say such kind things? She didn’t hesitate to offer him a grateful smile, reaching out to touch Roman’s cheek, rough with the stubble that adorned his face. The touch was both comforting and confusing for Roman. Frida’s hand was soft and warm, but her tears wouldn’t stop, and he wasn’t sure if he’d hurt her with what he’d said.“Frida?”That voice shattered the moment like a cold wind. Frida froze, trembling as if she had heard a ghost, and when she looked for the source, she saw Gary standing there, staring at them, his eyes full of judgment, almost as if

Gary broke free from the people restraining him and lunged at Roman again, who still had his arms pinned. Frida, afraid that Gary would gain the upper hand, stepped between them. Though she managed to push Gary back, she took a punch to the cheek that knocked her to the ground.“Frida!” Gary exclaimed, horrified.Roman, enraged by the sight of her getting hurt, stood protectively in front of her and shoved Gary back when he tried to approach. “But…” Frida hesitated, stepping toward the car, but she stopped in front of Roman, searching his eyes for a hint of mercy.“Have you forgotten your responsibility to me? I’m holding up my end of the deal. I proved that today. The least I expect is for you to do the same. I’m not asking for anything more than what you owe me,” he said through clenched teeth, his deep gaze piercing into her soul, freezing her heart.“I hear you, and I can’t help but wonder... what will you do when we have the child you want? What will you do when they’re afraid of the dark or cry because they’ve fallen? Will you demand maturity from them? Will you expect them to tear their heart out of their chest like you seem to have done?” She wanted to stand up to him, but facing those dark eyes felt like confronting a rhinoceros with a flyswatter.“That’s one option,” he replied with a sarcastic grin. “Speaking of the child you owe me... I hope you’re ready to fulfill that part of the deal,” he added before slam

Frida woke up with her legs sore, but a new sense of optimism that surprised her was surging within. The sky outside the window was clear, and the birds were singing as happily as her heart felt. When she turned, she found Roman still deeply asleep. She watched him closely, fascinated by the smoothness of his skin and his tattooed arm. Tempted by the forbidden, she reached out and traced the skulls and roses inked on his skin. She didn’t want to wake him, but the smoothness of his skin was addictive. She followed each line, caressing the veins that stood out like rivers running through his arm. His body was mesmerizing.“Don’t go falling in love with me. That’s not part of the contract.” Roman had woken up the moment her fingers touched his skin, but he stayed silent for a while, appreciating the way her blue eyes gazed at him with fascination.“Fall in love with you?” Frida asked playfully. “Don’t worry, I think I can control myself.”“I’m not so sure…” Roman got out of bed witho

He then kissed the smirk she gave him.Roman’s demeanor shifted the moment they stepped out of the car. He looked at her with tenderness, guiding her with gentlemanly care. Nevertheless, Frida knew it was all an act. The interior was grand, filled with opulence, carpeted, and so white it hurt Frida’s eyes."My dear cousin! How wonderful to see you!" A slim woman in a pink coat and matching earmuffs exclaimed. She hugged Roman, clearly making him uncomfortable, then turned to F

His attention was immediately caught by the young woman accompanying Roman. Her striking blue eyes left him momentarily speechless, a sense of familiarity stirring within him, though he couldn’t quite place where he had seen them before.“Roman! What a pleasure to see you, and with such a beautiful angel at your side!” the elderly man exclaimed, offering Frida a wide smile that made her blush instantly.“Let me introduce you to Frida, my girlfriend,” Roman said with a hint of pride.“Your girlfriend?”“Yes. We’ve been seeing each other for a while now, and I thought it was time to bring her along.”“Well then, you must know just how charming my grandson can be,” Benjamin chuckled as he stepped closer to Frida, clearly captivated by her beauty.“Yes, I know him well enough,” Frida replied, glancing at Roman.

Unfortunately, Julie had made a grave mistake years ago, one that had caused a deep rift and prevented their friendship from blossoming into something more."Roman! It’s great to see you again!" Julie’s father greeted him warmly, offering a wide smile. While Roman finished adjusting his suit, Frida was in the shower, desperately trying to slip her wedding ring off by lathering it with soap. You’ve got twenty minutes," Roman said after knocking on the door. When he didn’t hear a response, he knocked again. As Frida paid closer attention, she noticed that Julie was accompanied by a boy, older than Emma, perhaps around 15 or 16. His face was hardened with defiance, his rebellious attitude evident in every inch of him. His glare, full of resentment, and the way his lips curled in a perpetual sneer made Frida think he was a younger version of Roman."Frida, you look fantastic," Julie said with forced politeness as she carried Carina in her arms."Miss Julie..." Frida greeted her stiffly. Emma approached as well, wrapping her arms around her governess, seeking comfort from her.Despite seeing the hurt in Frida’s eyes, Emma didn’t pull back. She was just as stubborn and proud as her mother."Perfect. We were just waiting for you," Roman said, smiling warmly at Julie. To Frida, they looked like a family where she didn’t belong, and the realization stung."I suppose we’ll take one of the SUVs," Julie suggested, holding Carina’s hand as Emma walked beside Roman."No, we’ll be taking two ca

The money didn’t matter—it was about regaining his sanity, though now, with her before him, he doubted he’d ever truly find it."Remember my words, Roman. You need to—"Before he could continue lecturing her, Frida reached for Roman’s hands, having noticed his knuckles that were bruised and swollen from hitting Jake. Surprised, Roman watched as she gently kissed his wounds. The touch of her lips burned, but it was a pleasurable sensation."I’m glad this is all he did to you," she whispered, pulling back, regretting the gesture."I'm not just a businessman. I know how to fight when there’s something worth protecting."Frida tried to maintain eye contact, but a sharp pain shot through her ribs, making her gasp and clutch her sides.
