Thalassa's heart pounded violently in her chest as the thugs came closer and closer.

She kept her face hard, her jaw clenched. Every instinct screamed at her to panic because she knew this was no joke, but she refused to give Linda or her thugs the satisfaction.

"Don't you dare come closer," she spat through gritted teeth, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.

One of the thugs threw his head back and laughed. "She's trying to act hard.” His lips curled into a lecherous grin. "Don't worry, sweetheart. We'll break you in no time. Turn you into a nice, docile little bitch begging for our cocks."

Thalassa jerked her chair back as far as it could go, her muscles straining against the ropes that bound her. But one of the thugs circled behind her, his rough hands already reaching for the knots securing her wrists to the chair.

She could feel his breath on the back of her neck as he muttered, "Don't make this harder on yourself by resisting.”

He had begun untangling the ropes

After spreading one gallon of the gasoline. Linda moved to the next, then the next. And the next. The pungent liquid soaked into the cracks of wooden members, splattered against the cardboard boxes strewn around the room, and puddled near Thalassa’s chair.Thalassa’s heart hammered violently in her chest, but she kept her face a mask of defiance. No. She had to do something. You couldn't die. Not today. She needed to get back to Alex and Kris. They were waiting for her. Alex needed her. But no matter how she wriggled her wrists, the rope refused to loosen.Linda finished pouring the last gallon, letting the empty container clatter to the floor. Straightening up, she brushed her hands against her dress, a twisted smile curling her lips as she turned to face Thalassa. From a nearby chair, she grabbed her handbag and pulled out a somewhat small device. Then she walked back toward Thalassa, holding it up like a trophy.“This,” Linda began, her voice laced with cruel amusement, “is a deto

The bullet hit Linda square in the shoulder. Linda crumpled to the floor, clutching her arm. She groaned in pain as the blood seeped through her fingers, mixing with the gasoline pooling beneath her. Karen didn’t hesitate. She immediately rushed towards Thalassa’s chair, her movements frantic but determined. “Hold still,” she muttered, her trembling hands fumbling with the ropes binding Thalassa’s wrists. After some seconds, the ropes finally loosened. Thalassa pulled her hands free and immediately bent down to help Karen untie her legs. The knot slipped, and she finally stood, her heart pounding wildly. “We need to leave, Karen,” she said, her voice sharp with urgency. “Yes.” Karen nodded, breathless. “Let’s go.” Neither of them saw Linda reaching into her handbag and pulling out a pistol. Just as they turned to run, a gunshot exploded in the air. Thalassa froze as Karen let out a gasp of pain. “Karen!” she screamed. Karen staggered, her hand clutching her stomach where blood

Kris, Thalassa, Smoke, and his men emerged from the warehouse just as the flames roared behind them. The heat from the inferno cast an eerie glow on their faces. They stopped a safe distance away, each of them turning to stare at the warehouse engulfed in flames. Thalassa’s heart was racing, but it wasn’t just from the run—it was from the blood-curdling scream that ripped through the air.Linda.The sound sent a shiver down her spine, and she instinctively leaned closer to Kris. She felt his arms tighten around her, his grip almost bruising. He stood rigid, his jaw clenched as he stared at the flames. She didn’t need to see his face to know how much this moment was affecting him.The scream continued, rising in pitch, and then... silence. The absence of sound was almost louder than the scream itself. The crackling of the flames and the collapse of the warehouse’s wooden beams filled the silence. Thalassa glanced up at Kris, whose face remained stoic, but his eyes betrayed him. "Kris

Three days had passed since Karen and Linda’s deaths, but the memories refused to leave Thalassa. They lived in her head, vivid and relentless, surfacing at the worst times—when she tried to sleep, when she played with Tessa, or even when she sat in silence. The fire. The screams. The burnt remains.By the time the authorities had arrived twenty minutes later, there had been nothing left but blackened skeletons. The fire had consumed everything. Linda’s body was charred, a shell of the powerful woman she had once been. Karen’s body, too, had been unrecognizable, save for the remnants of her frame.Thalassa had felt a strange mix of emotions when the autopsy report confirmed that Karen’s death had been caused by the gunshots, not the fire. Most of all, she'd been relieved. It meant that Karen hadn’t suffered through the flames. Despite everything Karen had done—the lies, the betrayal—Thalassa couldn’t forget the woman Karen had once been. Her best friend. Her confidant. The person who

Thalassa stood in front of Kris’s penthouse, her finger hovering over the doorbell. She hesitated. Should she have waited until tomorrow? She pressed the doorbell again. Finally, the door opened. Kris stood there, tall and broad-shouldered, his expression unreadable. A half-empty bottle of whiskey dangled loosely in his hand, and her chest squeezed painfully at the sight. "Thalassa," his brows pulled together. "Is something wrong? Did something else happen?"She quickly shook her head, her hands fluttering nervously at her sides. "No, nothing like that," she assured him, her tone soft, almost hesitant. "I just… I wanted to see you."Kris frowned. "I told you I had things to take care of."Thalassa stepped in, closing the door behind her. "Are you upset with me?"His frown deepened. "What? No," he said, looking genuinely confused. "Why would I be upset with you?""Then why won’t you talk to me?" she pressed, her voice trembling slightly. "Why won’t you tell me how you feel? Why won’t

Kris stared at Thalassa, his body frozen as her words replayed in his head like a broken record. I accept to marry you again...if you’ll have me.He blinked slowly, unsure if he had misheard her or if his mind was playing tricks on him. His hands grew clammy. She was right there in front of him, gazing at him with those beautiful, earnest eyes, yet he felt as though he was dreaming.Seconds ticked by, and Kris didn’t say a word. Thalassa’s expression faltered. The soft smile that had graced her lips disappeared, and her eyes dimmed with regret. She lowered her gaze, biting her bottom lip.“I’m sorry,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “I'm so insensitive. You’re going through so much right now, and here I am, talking about marriage like it’s nothing. This obviously isn’t the right time. I'm so sorry.”Her words jolted Kris out of his daze. His brows furrowed as he reached for her hand. “What?” he croaked. “No. No, it can never be the wrong time to make me the happiest

Thalassa sighed blissfully as she stirred awake, her body instinctively curling closer into Kris’s side. His warmth and steady heartbeat beneath her cheek filled her with a peace she hadn’t known in a while. Her lips curved into a soft smile as she let herself bask in the quiet comfort of the moment. She finally opened her eyes and looked up at him, her voice still heavy with sleep as she murmured, “Good morning.”Kris’s lips curved into a tender smile, his hand brushing her hair away from her face. “Good morning,” he whispered, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. He lingered there, and Thalassa’s eyes fluttered closed again, soaking in the warmth of his touch. When he pulled back, he asked softly, “How’d you sleep?”She grinned lazily, her voice teasing. “I’d say wonderful, but ‘exquisite’ seems more fitting.”How could she describe it as anything less when the crux of her thighs still ached from the uncountable number of orgasms Kris had given her through the nigh

Kris knelt down in front of Tessa, his heart breaking as her big, innocent eyes stared up at him, waiting for an answer. Her question hung heavily in the air.He took a deep breath, struggling to find the words. How could he explain something so permanent, so cruel, to someone so little? How was he supposed to take her bright, innocent world and shatter it with words? He had rehearsed this moment countless times during the car ride, but every version left him feeling more inadequate. He glanced at Thalassa, who gave him an encouraging nod, her hand resting on his shoulder. He placed his large hands gently on Tessa’s tiny ones, his voice trembling as he began."Tessa, sweetheart," he said softly, his voice tender but pained, "Mummy loved you very much. More than anything in the whole world."Tessa tilted her head, her brows furrowing. "Then why won’t she come back to see me?"Kris felt his throat tighten, his vision blurring. "Mummy… Mummy can’t come back, Tessa." He paused, searching

“What do you have to say for yourself, young man?” Kris demanded when Gendry remained silent for several seconds. “Did you say those things about my daughter?”Regret flashed across Gendry’s face as he nodded. “Yes.”Kris’s jaw clenched. “So you really did mean to make a fool of my daughter after all.”“No!” Gendry’s response was immediate, his voice sharp. “That was never my intention.”“Then why did my daughter hear you saying those things about her?”Gendry hesitated. “Because I..." He swallowed hard, as if he found it hard to admit his next words. “Because I felt humiliated. I was hurt that Tessa thought so little of me after I’d gone out of my way to show her how much I liked her.”Blowing out a heavy breath, he ran a hand over his face, then dragged it through his hair. “Yes, I know what I did was wrong, but back then, I thought that if we arrived separately, people would ask questions. I thought she would tell them she sent me away for being a lowlife, and I’d become the laughi

Tension crackled in the air like an overcharged high-voltage wire waiting to snap as Tessa waited for her brother to say something. Her brother, who was most certainly not capable of doing what Gendry had accused him of.When seconds passed and he still hadn’t spoken, her heart began to sink. She shifted her stance, positioning herself so she could look him straight in the eyes.“What is he saying, Alex?” she repeated, her voice laced with urgency. “Tell me he’s wrong. He’s wrong, isn’t he? You didn’t say any of those things to him. He’s lying, right?”The longer Alex kept his silence, the more her heart plummeted, and the faster her patience wore thin. Finally, the wire snapped.“Alex!” she bit out, smacking him hard on the chest. “Answer me, damn it!”Her voice rang out louder than she intended, the sharp sound echoing back at her like a taunt. She searched her brother’s face, but his expression remained frustratingly impassive.Just seconds later, the dining hall doors swung open,

Stiffening , Gendry let out a sigh. The last thing he wanted to do was to deal with this control freak. He turned his head to glance at Alex for a second before looking away again, keeping his gaze fixed on the sky. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets.Alex stepped closer, standing beside him, his posture rigid. “Whatever game you’re playing this time, it won’t work,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Stay away from my sister.”A mirthless chuckle escaped Gendry. He turned his head slightly, just enough to glance at Alex. “Isn’t Tessa old enough to decide the people she wants around her?”“Yes, she’s old enough,” Alex admitted. “But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop protecting her.”Gendry clenched his jaw, his temper flaring. Protect her? From who exactly?“From what, Alex?” he bit out, finally turning to face him fully. “From me? Because you still think I’m not good enough for her?”Alex met his glare without hesitation. “Yes,” he sai

The next day, Gendry adjusted the cuffs of his shirt as he stood at the edge of the altar behind Jace, watching the wedding rehearsal unfold. Maya and Jace were standing in front of the altar, holding hands while the priest explained how things would go tomorrow. Jace wore a simple button-down and slacks, while Maya was in a flowy sundress.Since this was just the rehearsal only family and those who had important roles to play in the ceremony were present. That included him and Tessa, Tessa's family, Jace's parents and aunt, and one of Maya's cousins.Gendry wasn't looking at any of them. His eyes were drawn to the maid of honor. Standing on Maya's side, Tessa was quite a sight. Her hair fell in soft waves, the light fabric of her dress clinging to her just enough to taunt him with the memory of last night. God, last night. He clenched his jaw, shifting his weight as flashes of her moans, the way her body had writhed against his, consumed him for the hundredth time that day. And y

Tessa was lying flat on her back, staring at the ceiling, her fingers clenched in the sheets. It had been two hours since she told Kevin she wanted to go to bed early, and yet here she was; wide awake, tossing and turning, unable to shut off her mind. She hated that her thoughts kept circling back to the conversation with Gendry in the car. His accusations about her thinking other people just weren’t good enough. His claim that he had firsthand experience of it years ago. What the hell had he meant by that? She should be angry. His words were baseless and unfair. And yet, instead of dwelling on that, all she could think about was everything he’d done to her body this time yesterday. And again this afternoon.A frustrated groan left her lips as a familiar ache coiled between her thighs. Damn him. Damn him and his expert tongue, his manipulative fingers, his very potent d–God, she couldn’t even finish the thought without feeling heat creep up her neck. How had she turned into this pers

The tension broke when Kevin suddenly appeared beside Tessa, a broad smile on his face as he looked at her parents. Gendry and Alex finally released their handshake, and Gendry stepped back, returning to his previous spot. After a few seconds, Kevin glanced at Tessa and arched a brow, silently prompting her for a formal introduction.Tessa cleared her throat. "Uh, Mum, Dad, this is Kevin Balthazar. Kevin is..."She trailed off, and Gendry unknowingly held his breath, waiting for what she was going to say."...a very good friend," she finally completed.Kevin beamed. "I'm very honored to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Miller. Tessa has told me a lot about you." He stretched out his hand eagerly. Both Kris and Thalassa shook his hand, looking slightly amused by his enthusiasm. Then Kevin turned his attention to Alexander."I'm a huge fan of yours, Alex." His eyes widened. "I can call you that, right?"Alex smiled and nodded. "Of course. My sister's friends are my friends."Gendry snorted. Why d

Tessa’s happiness at seeing her family was unmistakable. After hugging and rocking her little sister for a bit, she moved toward her parents, who both engulfed her in a warm embrace.Gendry’s breath hitched. He’d seen Tessa wear a lot of expressions; angry, frustrated, annoyed, flushed, and pleasured, but he’d never seen her look so at peace before. It was obvious she loved and adored her parents, and she felt safe with them. Gendry wondered if there was a story there he didn’t know.“Hey, I’m feeling incredibly left out right now,” Alex said in a mock-grouchy voice.Tessa’s parents released her from their hug. She shrugged, looking at her brother.“I’m only hugging those I missed the most. I didn’t miss you much, so—”“Stop being silly and come here.”Tessa shrieked with laughter as Alex pulled her into a hug. Their bond as siblings was undeniable, their closeness evident in the easy way they teased and held each other.

Tessa’s heart caught. What he'd just told her could mean two things: that he wanted her so much that he’d set his rule aside because of her, or that she was worthless to him, which was why he was willing to sleep with her with no intention of having a relationship with her. The possibility of it being the latter stung more than she could ever admit. But why? It wasn’t like she wanted a relationship with him either. With her mood suddenly soured for reasons she couldn’t understand, she looked out the window at the buildings whirling by. “What about you?” Gendry’s voice jolted her out of her thoughts. Tessa pulled away from the window and looked at him. “What about me?” she asked, confusion in her voice. “You already know I’d never been with any man... until yesterday” “Yes. I know.” Gendry nodded. “The question is why. You’re beautiful, and you know it. It couldn’t possibly be because no man has approached you before. I know you probably have a thousand flocking around you, so wh

On the way back to the villa, the car was filled with a comfortable silence, but Tessa's mind was stuck on something she couldn't stop thinking about. It had been on her mind since morning, and she needed an answer. Before she could change her mind, she spoke. “This morning… what Jace said… what did he mean?” She saw Gendry’s hands tense around the steering wheel. “Jace said a lot of things,” he pointed out. “Yes,” Tessa agreed. “But I meant… what he said about thinking you’d lost interest in women.” Gendry briefly took his eyes off the road. “I can stop the car and show you right now that he was talking nonsense—just like I showed you a few hours ago.” Tessa’s cheeks flushed, wild images flaring through her mind at his words. “You’re evading my question.” “And you seem to have forgotten your own rules,” Gendry mused wryly. “No talking about each other’s personal lives, remember?” His voice had an edge to it, and Tessa wondered if she should drop it, but the curiosity was eati
