CH 4

LAURA’S POV

As I walked into the office the next day, whispers were flying about in the air about my sudden promotion. I am determined not to let the opinion of others bother me, as far as I am now a full time staff member.

Immediately I got settled down, I got a call from the company landline, “Ms Laura, come to my office,” Mr Bryan ordered, I stood up from my seat, and I smoothened my dress properly.

I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. I heard his deep voice ‘Come in’.

“Good morning Mr. Bryan,” I greeted him, as I fumbled with my hands nervously. I walked towards the empty seat at the front of his desk, as I was about to sit, he growled “Did I ask you to sit?” I shook in fear as I remained standing.

He cleared his throat, as he began, “You are not allowed to do anything until I ask you to, do you understand?”

“You don't own me, just because you promoted me to keep your little secret you did not want people to know about doesn’t mean you control me.” I uttered, as I emphasised on ‘little secret’ he looked so shocked to the bone.

I continued, “Well, I’m going to cut you some slack anytime we are at the office, so people won’t suspect anything.” I gave him a little smile, as I turned to leave his office.

“If you should walk out of this office, just kiss your job goodbye,” he roared in anger.

I could feel the anger in his voice, as I shook in fear.

“The main reason why I called you here is for you to get my daily coffee, just the way I like it. Just because you have been promoted doesn’t mean you are relieved of that duty,” he ordered.

“We will be travelling to Paris for a business meeting in two days time, since you are my personal assistant, you are to tag along. Meet my secretary for more information because you need to do some talking at the meeting.” he declared.

"Lastly, where is the document I gave you yesterday, hope you have signed it?" He asked. 

"Yes sir, I will bring it right away," I responded as I walked out of the office happily, so my dream is finally coming to reality, my dream to work side by side with the CEO of premium tech. I got his coffee and immediately went to the secretary's desk to get filled with the necessary information.

As I prepared to close for the day, Mr. Bryan walked to my desk with a brown envelope in his hand, I thought he was about to go home too.

He dropped the brown envelope on my desk. “Make sure you bring it with you tomorrow,” he ordered.

I took the envelope from him and nodded.

After he walked out of my sight, I did a grateful dance. A f*ckin house agreement, I’m finally leaving the rat hole I called home.

As I reminisce on my past, I couldn’t help but be grateful. ‘Maybe it isn’t that bad that I’m blackmailing Mr. Bryan, after all, I get what I want and that’s all that matters,’ I thought.

I placed the document in my bag as I walked out of the company with a smile on my face, I did something I haven’t done since my one year of working in Premium tech, I took my friend and me on a date.

When I got back home, my phone was ringing, displaying Mr. Bryan as the caller, I threw the phone on my bed as I walked to my bathroom to take my bath. As I came out of the bedroom, my phone was still ringing, I picked up my phone from the bed and I saw Mr. Bryan's name displayed as the caller.

I mutter under my breath, “Can’t this man live without me for a day, I promise him that I’m not going to spill his secret as long as he keeps up to the end of his deal, which he has been doing so far.”

“Hello, Mr. Bryan,” I spoke, as I picked up the call.

“Mia, I’m so sad, I always think about you every day,” he uttered, drunkenly over the phone.

“Mr. Bryan, this is Laura, not Mia. I think you’re drunk, where are you? Let me come and pick you up” I proposed, but I heard him deep chuckle. I heard him talking to someone in the background of the call.

“Hello ma’am, this is Dylan, one of the waiters at Ice Tub Club. I believe you are his girlfriend, your boyfriend is wasted at the club.” the bartender stated.

“Ok, please can you send the address so I can come pick him up,” I requested, I didn’t even bother to tell him I’m not his girlfriend, not like he cares.

After he hung up the call, my phone beeps with a message. I picked up my coat and ordered a taxi, giving him the address to the club.

I walked into the club, and fortunately for me, I met Dylan coming out of the club with a trash bag in his hand. I got to know he was Dylan because of the name tag on his dress.

“Hi, you talked to me earlier. I’m here to pick up Mr. Bryan,” I uttered, and he muttered a ‘oh’.

“I’m sorry for misjudging, I thought you were his girlfriend.” he apologised, and I gave him a small smile.

“This way ma’am,” he directed me to Mr. Bryan’s table.

“Thank you,” I muttered to the waiter, and he nodded his head in acknowledgement.

I walked to his table and said, “I need to take you home sir,” I assisted him up from his seat and I took his car keys, phone and his coat with me.

He kept saying gibberish, “Your daddy has not been nice to me since you left, he makes me do things I never dream of doing. I didn’t know you would come back for me.” he muttered, as he tried to hug me.

The words he said got my attention, what did he mean by ‘thing he never dreamt of doing?’ I thought throughout the ride back home.
