Ava braced herself for whatever his reaction would be, ready to defend herself if the need arose, although she knew that Derek wasn’t that sort of person.

The last thing she expected was for tears to gather in his eyes. He blinked the tears back rapidly and stared at her with a very hurt look that made her feel guilty.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Ava?” He asked.

“I … I …”

“Would you ever have told me?”

“Of course, I would have! I wanted to tell you earlier today. That was why I asked to see you privately, but I guess I lost my nerve. It’s not exactly an easy thing to say.” Ava replied.

“You were afraid I would not want her. You were afraid that I would reject her.” Derek stated.

“Yes, I was. You can't blame me. You know how adamant you were about me not getting pregnant. Look, this is not a topic we can discuss here. We’re beginning to get a lot of curious looks from small, inquisitive eyes.” Ava told him. They were having this conversation in whispers because they did not want the

Derek could not stop smiling. Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that he would suddenly get a daughter out of nowhere, but that was exactly what had happened less than an hour ago, and he was ecstatic about it.What was even better was the fact that his beautiful daughter was birthed by the woman he loved. Yes, he loved Ava, and maybe it was high time he stopped deceiving himself and trying to deny his feelings. There was no point in doing that. He couldn’t wait to start to make up for lost time where Harper was concerned. Also, he couldn’t help but wonder if things would have been different had he known that Ava was pregnant with his baby before she left.Yes, things would have been different, because he wouldn’t just have allowed her to leave with his child. Hell, he wouldn't have divorced her in the first place because it would have meant choosing between her and Denise and there was no way he would have chosen Denise over her.One of the reasons why he had finally decided

EIGHT PLUS YEARS AGO As much as he didn’t want to, Derek still thought about Denise once in a while and he also thought about the kind of life they would have had if she was the one he got married to. He absolutely hated having such thoughts, especially because of the way things ended between them. Due to the way she left, a normal person would have gotten over Denise easily, but apparently, he wasn’t normal. A week after Ava informed him that she was pregnant, he had to travel to another state. Each day, Ava made sure to call him and check up on him, telling him how much she missed him and how she couldn’t wait for him to return. And then on the eighth day after he left, he did not receive her call. He did not think too much of it and figured that maybe she overslept that day. So busy was he that day that he did not think anything of it until the next day, when she still didn’t call. By the time it was afternoon, he put a call through to her, but it went unanswered. He called he

He rushed over to her immediately, his heart pounding harder than it had ever pounded in his life.He lifted her head up and checked for a pulse, calling her name over and over as though that was going to make her get up, laugh, and tell him that it was all a prank. He did find a pulse, although it was a very faint one, and when he found it, he sagged with relief, reached for his phone, and called his driver who had dropped him off immediately. “There’s an emergency. Please get the car ready and keep the engine running. We have to get to the hospital as fast as we can.” He told the man, not bothering to listen to his response. It would be much faster for the man to drive them to the hospital than for him to wait for an ambulance to arrive, he reckoned. He was also in no frame of mind to drive right then.Already, he had lifted Ava up in his arms and was headed as fast as he could down the stairs, still dressed in his suit. The driver had the car ready as instructed and was already wa

“What do you mean by she was the one who told you to stay back? Why would she want to be in the house all alone?” Derek asked the woman.“We were all at the party together, sir. She wasn’t feeling too well and asked the driver to take her home. I offered to come home with her, or at least send someone along with her, but she vehemently refused and asked us to stay back since she was capable of looking after herself. If we had known that it was this bad …” The woman trailed off, wringing her hands worriedly.“Alright, alright. That’s fine.” Derek told her.Not long after, he went home to have a much needed shower and rest. Then later in the evening, he went back to the hospital to see how Ava was faring. She had been stabilized, which was such a big relief to him and everyone. She spent a total of ten days in the hospital before she was discharged. By this time, she had found out about the loss of the baby and was inconsolable. Now that she was better, Derek too was feeling the sadnes

Derek took a deep breath and slowly let it out before replying.“Ava, I don’t think that that’s a good idea … at least not now. First of all, it’s way too early to start trying for a baby so soon after the miscarriage. Also, I don’t want to have kids right now, and even if I do want them later on, I’ll most likely adopt them.”“You were happy when I told you that I was pregnant. You wanted the baby that we lost.”“Yes, I did, but remember that we both had no choice really. We did not plan the pregnancy. It just happened, and then it almost took your life. ”“It wasn’t the baby’s fault. These things happen to women more often than you think, and it doesn’t mean that I can't carry a baby to full term. I’ll just be closely monitored this time around.” Ava insisted. “I don’t want a baby,” Derek told her very firmly and watched the hurt enter her eyes. However, he meant what he said and he now realized that it was better to tell her how he felt and what he wanted, rather than to give her

I think we have made a dreadful mistake, Ava. We certainly didn’t think this through before we decided to get married.” Derek told her uneasily.“I didn’t make a mistake, Derek. I wanted to marry you because I loved you, and I still do, so I married you happily. If you think the marriage is a mistake, please speak for yourself.” Ava replied, holding her head high, but she could not keep her chin from trembling and tears from filling her eyes.“I just meant that we clearly want different things, and we did not discuss any of this beforehand.”“I know, but it’s fine. You were optimistic that we could work things out after we got married, but now that we are, you're refusing even to try. It's okay though. Marriage is about compromise. I’m willing to compromise with you and accept your terms. You’re right. Several children who are already in this world need a loving home and we can provide them with that. We’ll start with the adoption process once you're ready.” Ava replied.Derek was dum

It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off Ava’s shoulders. Derek had accepted the news of his daughter quite well, and he was happy to play his fatherly role. What was left now was to tell Harper about who he really was to her, and she did so that very afternoon. She took Harper to her favorite ice cream parlor, where they both got some ice cream. “Harper, I need to tell you something really important.” She told her daughter after they had both devoured their ice cream. “Okay, Mommy,” Harper replied, giving her mother her full attention and looking so serious that Ava burst out laughing for a moment. The girl sometimes acted like one who was much older than her age. “So remember how you said you wanted a daddy?” “Yes, mommy. Are you going to marry Steve so he’ll be my daddy?” Harper asked excitedly. “Calm down, honey. No one talked about marrying Steve, but then, your real daddy wants to meet you.” “Oh … is he nice? • The CEO Ex-Wife's Revenge   Epilogue

The day was bright, sunny, and cheerful, as were the people who were present at Derek's house to celebrate with him and Ava as they got married for the second time. The large garden at their house had been decorated beautifully and had served as their wedding venue. The two were the stars of the show, and they had eyes for no one but each other. They had just exchanged their vows again, to the thunderous cheers of their friends, family, and well-wishers.To put it more precisely Derek was the one with the friends, while Ava was the one with her family members present.Derek didn’t have any extended family members left, and neither did he want any. The family that he had built and was still building was more than enough for him.He had Ava, who was the best and most supportive partner that anyone could have, and with whom he was madly in love, and vice versa. He also had his beautiful daughter, Harper, who was growing up so fast and was so smart and well-behaved that she melted hearts

He led her back to his room, walked over to a drawer by the side of his bed, opened it, and brought out something from inside it.When he turned towards her and she saw what it was that he brought out of it, Ava gasped out loud.It looked like the black box in which her engagement ring had come several years ago.Derek had always had a taste for good things, and he had the money to support his taste. Thus back then, even when he wasn’t really into her, and was only marrying her out of pity, he had gotten her a beautifully crafted and expensive engagement ring.As he opened the box in his hands now and got down on one knee, she could see that it was the same ring that was inside it.He had kept it even after all these years! Tears sprung to her eyes, filling them as he professed his love to her and asked her to marry him again, promising to treat her right this time around and make up for all the lost years.“Yes, yes, Derek. Of course, I’ll marry you! There’s nothing I want more.” She

Ava wasn’t about to take any chances though. After hugging the living daylights out of Derek, while he hugged her back just as tightly, she insisted that they had to visit the hospital right then.“But it’s already late. Besides, I don’t think there's anything they can do or will have to do. We can wait until tomorrow to go there and celebrate this night instead.” Derek suggested, his voice rife with meaning as he threw a suggestive wink Ava’s way, but she didn't allow herself to be swayed.“No way in hell. We’ve waited too long for you to regain your memory to just take it so lightly now that it has finally happened. We’re going now, and that’s that!”“As Her Royal Highness wishes.” Derek joked, making a small, formal bow that made Ava smile.Yes, he was back. She could see in his eyes that he truly recognized her, but even better, he had the same look in his eyes that he used to have before he went to the conference and everything changed. The look that told her that he was in love

  • The CEO Ex-Wife's Revenge   Rememberance

She picked up the papers with the slowness of a very old woman and scanned through them, her hands shaking. She was not surprised to see her name, as well as Derek’s name on the papers because she had recognized the papers the minute they fell out of the book.It was the same ones that Derek had handed to her on that night several years ago, which she had had no choice but to reluctantly sign, while crying her eyes out and swearing never to forgive him for everything that he had done to her.Except that he hadn't really done anything in the sense of the word ... at least, not in the way that she thought. Why on earth were these papers still with him? She had signed them and left that day without giving any thought to what he was going to do with them. Her signature was there on the paper, right where she had signed it haphazardly. In fact, she thought that she could still see a tear mark or two on the papers since she was crying when she signed them, but she couldn’t be sure since th

They walked in companionable silence to Derek’s room. Once they were inside the room, he led her to his walk-in closet where he had stored the journals, making sure to keep a respectable distance between them.Ava knew that it was because she had complained about the scent of his cologne, and now, she wished that she had kept her wide mouth shut.“It’s all in there. Here, let me look for the specific one you asked about.” Derek said, picking it out and handing it to her.“Oh, thank you. Are you sure that you don’t mind me reading it?”“Not in the least bit. I feel like I’d be doing the guy who wrote all that stuff a huge solid by letting you see for yourself all the things that he wanted to say to you for so long but was too chicken to say. He might want to kill me for doing it, but I think he’ll be better for it in the long run.” Derek replied, shrugging.“Okay then,” Ava said happily.Derek, for his part, suddenly became self-conscious. The next day, Derek arrived home from work with a huge bouquet of flowers for Ava and a smaller one for Harper. The two of them were in the living room, watching Harper’s favorite cartoon and looking all comfy and cozy. Their eyes lit up the moment Derek stepped into the living room, and this filled him with warmth. Harper in her usual fashion, bounded up to run over to him to give him a big hug. Her hugs were one of his favorite things nowadays, and he could never get tired of receiving them for as long as he lived. Ava, on the other hand, was more reserved in her welcome towards him, but she did smile at him in welcome. Her eyes were always cautious around him, which kind of made him sad because that emotion was definitely different from the one he wrote about in his journals after she warmed up to him. “Welcome home. Derek. What have you got there behind you?” Ava asked him. “Thank you. I got you both some flowers.” He replied, and brought forward the hand that was holding th

As the days passed and Derek's memory didn't return, he got more and more frustrated because it felt like things were at a standstill due to the memory loss.On the bright side, catching up with work wasn't difficult for him at all. In fact, it was one of the easiest things he had to deal with and he spent several hours a day at it while Harper was at school and Ava was trying to get back to work.Catching up with the rest of his life was what was difficult though. Nothing made sense, and so he had to go through all of his stuff, trying to find out more about his current than he already knew.He managed to find out a lot just by doing this. He had always been very organized and used to keep journals that documented his daily life.Apparently, he still kept these journals and they were all arranged neatly on a shelf in his library. He went through each and every one of them, trying to catch a glimpse of the man he now was. Going through them made him realize just how different he was f

She smiled at him and slowly came out from behind the chair. Derek had no idea for how long she had been hiding there, but it seemed that it had been quite a while.“Daddy…” She said and without warning, rushed at him and embraced him tightly with more strength than he would have expected a child to have.Derek awkwardly patted her back and embraced her too, not sure if he should pick her up, kiss her cheek, ruffle her hair, or anything like that.“How are you?” He asked her, wincing as soon as the words left his mouth. He sounded like he was having a formal meeting with some board of directors or something like that, not talking to a child. However, Harper didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she made his decision for him by raising her arms, indicating that he should pick her up.“I’m fine, daddy. The bad woman told me that you died, but I didn’t believe her.” Harper told him.Derek immediately did as she wanted and she rested her head on his shoulder in the sweetest gesture ever. To his
