On the ride back home, Derek felt as light as a bird. He hadn't realized just how much it bothered him that Ava didn’t know the exact details of how everything that led to their divorce happened, but now that she knew and didn’t hate him for him, he was a very happy man.

Leaving her house was no mean feat because of the presence of the paparazzi who did not show any signs of leaving at all. As soon as they sighted him coming out of the house, they gathered around like a swarm of locusts, vying for his attention as they bombarded him with questions.

The only question he did answer was to affirm that everything that Andy said was true. Then he finally got into his car and his driver pulled away from Ava’s house.

He was worried about her staying in the house alone, because of all those gossip-hungry fellows who were camped outside the house, so he left his bodyguard with her, even though he could see that she wasn’t exactly happy about it.

Some of the paparazzi began chasing after his ca

Dinner that night was a rambunctious affair between father, mother, and daughter. The domestic staff, most of whom were old employees that Ava knew, smiled fondly and happily at the scene, glad that the boss and his ex-wife had finally made peace with each other. They were happy for their boss because all of them knew how much Ava’s leaving had affected him, even though it probably served him right since he was the one who asked her to leave in the first place. However, they all knew what a kind man he was, and no one was perfect. He was the best and most generous boss that anyone could ask for, and every single one of them would rather die than work for someone else. The few people who had left his employ in the past few years were either females who got married and had to move away from the city or people whom Derek had given the capital to start their dream businesses. The summary of the whole thing was that he was a good man, and everyone was bound to make mistakes from time to ti

Days passed and nothing was heard from the guy who had blared Derek's secret all over television, even though he had promised to come back the following day after his last interview with some more secrets he had to expose about Denise.People were stunned to find out that the guy was the one and same Andrew Tanner, who was once one of the biggest film producers in the industry back then. The man had aged so badly over the years and looked nothing like the way he used to look.Denise also seemed to have gone into hiding and was thankfully not going to the gossip channels to say anything else about Derek, Ava, or their daughter, which was such an immense relief to both Ava and Derek.Denise was also notably absent during Barry’s funeral, which was probably for the best because the last thing anyone needed was for her to start to stir up drama in such a solemn gathering. After the funeral, Derek traveled as he had said he would. He had been putting off this trip for a very long time beca

At first, Derek thought that he was seeing things. What on earth was Steve of all people doing here? He was supposed to be thousands of miles away shooting a movie as he had told Ava, so how come he was in another state and city entirely? That wasn’t the most surprising thing though. The most surprising thing that had Derek’s mouth nearly hanging off the floor, although on second thought, it shouldn't really have come as much of a shock to Derek, considering the kind of person that Steve was, was the fact that he wasn’t alone.Hanging onto his arm were two different women, both of whom were dressed so scantily that they could have for all intents and purposes, been naked. As Derek watched in disbelief, one of the women used her hands to drag Steve’s head towards her for a kiss, and Steve happily obliged her, kissing the woman as deeply as though his life depended on it right there in the club. The other woman, not to be left out, also dragged Steve’s head towards her for a kiss, and o

"You asshole!” Derek said through gritted teeth, not bothering to answer Steve’s greeting.Steve irritated him to the high heavens. Luckily enough, the other guys who were with Derek had gone off to find prospective dance partners, or to do something else, so at least, no one was paying attention to Derek and Steve.“Now, is that any way to greet an old friend?” Steve asked, attempting to make light of the situation, but Derek wasn't having it.“You’re no friend of mine, Steve, and I was about to leave anyway. You can stay here and carry on with what you were doing. Don’t think I won't tell Ava about it though. She deserves to know just the kind of person you are.”“Ah, so that’s what this is about. Have you forgotten that I'm a movie star? Fans come up to me all the time. What do you expect me to do? Turn them away? I can't do that, as you well know. These people are the ones who made me what I am today. They watch my movies, and that is how I make my money. If they stop watching my

However, there was the fact that Ava was now aware of the fact that he didn't cheat on her while they were married, so maybe those words did not hold true any longer, and she did not see him as her vomit any longer.Whatever the case was, she had to know about Steve and then make her own decision about whether she wanted to continue to datesomeone like him or not.Derek hoped she wouldn't continue to date him, because not doing that would mean that he could finally tell her about his feelings and see if she would be receptive to them rekindling their romance again.Aside from that, he also didn't want them to continue dating because he did not want a man like Steve to be a stepfather to his daughter, in case Ava decided to get that serious with Steve in the future.Frankly, if anyone had told Derek that Ava and Steve would still be an item after all these months had passed, he wouldn't have believed it since Steve got bored dating one woman really easily. He did not bother to dignif

“Ah ha! There we have it! I knew there was more to this. It was a mistake, dearest Saint Derek, as I have told you countless times. I was discharged and acquitted by the police after all that brouhaha. Hell, her mother attested to that fact and told everyone how manic her daughter truly was. You know that very well. It was simply self-defense, and I don’t get why you think I should have spent the rest of my life in prison simply for defending myself.”“It doesn’t change the fact that you killed her. Also, don’t forget that I was in the same house with both of you that night. I call bullshit on the self-defense story that you made everyone believe. It wasn’t self-defense. What it was is plain murder ... possibly premeditated murder, even.” Derek said, the usual feeling of guilt stirring up within him whenever the subject of late Victoria came up.“I …”“And what about her father ... the poor man you and Victoria’s greedy mother made everyone believe was crazy? THROWBACKDerek first met Victoria when he was a freshman at the university and went to the library to read. On that day, she was sitting a little distance away, and for some reason, he felt drawn to her like a flame to a moth. She was a very beautiful, but timid looking girl, and each time their eyes met, she blushed and looked away quickly. However, it was clear that she was probably interested in him too, because she kept stealing glances in his direction.Deciding that he would try to strike up a conversation with her after some time had passed, Derek got up and went to get another book in another part of the library. He only took a few minutes to do so, but by the time he got back, she was gone. Apparently, he had misread her, and she had probably thought he was a creep, which was why she was glancing surreptitiously at him.He thanked his stars that he didn’t actually approach her, because that would have been embarrassing, and continued with his reading. It turned out that Victoria's aunt had a coffee shop a few blocks away from where Steve lived. In fact, Derek and his friends had always frequented that coffee shop at least three times a week ever since they moved into that area.It was a marvel to Derek how he had never crossed paths with Victoria until now because according to her, she helped out her aunt a lot in the shop. She informed him that the reason was because she used to live in the school dormitory, but had now moved in with her aunt, who lived in the apartment above the coffee shop. After that encounter at the grocery store, the guys saw her nearly every time they went to the coffee shop and became close friends with her. In fact, Damien’s then-girlfriend, who attended the same book club and was an acquaintance of Victoria, also became good friends with her. Victoria began to spend time at Steve’s place with the guys and Damien’s girlfriend, which was were they hung out most of the time. Before anyone knew what was happ

He led her back to his room, walked over to a drawer by the side of his bed, opened it, and brought out something from inside it.When he turned towards her and she saw what it was that he brought out of it, Ava gasped out loud.It looked like the black box in which her engagement ring had come several years ago.Derek had always had a taste for good things, and he had the money to support his taste. Thus back then, even when he wasn’t really into her, and was only marrying her out of pity, he had gotten her a beautifully crafted and expensive engagement ring.As he opened the box in his hands now and got down on one knee, she could see that it was the same ring that was inside it.He had kept it even after all these years! Tears sprung to her eyes, filling them as he professed his love to her and asked her to marry him again, promising to treat her right this time around and make up for all the lost years.“Yes, yes, Derek. Of course, I’ll marry you! There’s nothing I want more.” She

Ava wasn’t about to take any chances though. After hugging the living daylights out of Derek, while he hugged her back just as tightly, she insisted that they had to visit the hospital right then.“But it’s already late. Besides, I don’t think there's anything they can do or will have to do. We can wait until tomorrow to go there and celebrate this night instead.” Derek suggested, his voice rife with meaning as he threw a suggestive wink Ava’s way, but she didn't allow herself to be swayed.“No way in hell. We’ve waited too long for you to regain your memory to just take it so lightly now that it has finally happened. We’re going now, and that’s that!”“As Her Royal Highness wishes.” Derek joked, making a small, formal bow that made Ava smile.Yes, he was back. She picked up the papers with the slowness of a very old woman and scanned through them, her hands shaking. She was not surprised to see her name, as well as Derek’s name on the papers because she had recognized the papers the minute they fell out of the book.It was the same ones that Derek had handed to her on that night several years ago, which she had had no choice but to reluctantly sign, while crying her eyes out and swearing never to forgive him for everything that he had done to her.Except that he hadn't really done anything in the sense of the word ... at least, not in the way that she thought. Why on earth were these papers still with him? She had signed them and left that day without giving any thought to what he was going to do with them. Her signature was there on the paper, right where she had signed it haphazardly. In fact, she thought that she could still see a tear mark or two on the papers since she was crying when she signed them, but she couldn’t be sure since th

They walked in companionable silence to Derek’s room. Once they were inside the room, he led her to his walk-in closet where he had stored the journals, making sure to keep a respectable distance between them.Ava knew that it was because she had complained about the scent of his cologne, and now, she wished that she had kept her wide mouth shut.“It’s all in there. Here, let me look for the specific one you asked about.” Derek said, picking it out and handing it to her.“Oh, thank you. Are you sure that you don’t mind me reading it?”“Not in the least bit. I feel like I’d be doing the guy who wrote all that stuff a huge solid by letting you see for yourself all the things that he wanted to say to you for so long but was too chicken to say. He might want to kill me for doing it, but I think he’ll be better for it in the long run.” Derek replied, shrugging.“Okay then,” Ava said happily.Derek, for his part, suddenly became self-conscious. The next day, Derek arrived home from work with a huge bouquet of flowers for Ava and a smaller one for Harper. The two of them were in the living room, watching Harper’s favorite cartoon and looking all comfy and cozy. Their eyes lit up the moment Derek stepped into the living room, and this filled him with warmth. Harper in her usual fashion, bounded up to run over to him to give him a big hug. Her hugs were one of his favorite things nowadays, and he could never get tired of receiving them for as long as he lived. Ava, on the other hand, was more reserved in her welcome towards him, but she did smile at him in welcome. Her eyes were always cautious around him, which kind of made him sad because that emotion was definitely different from the one he wrote about in his journals after she warmed up to him. “Welcome home. As the days passed and Derek's memory didn't return, he got more and more frustrated because it felt like things were at a standstill due to the memory loss.On the bright side, catching up with work wasn't difficult for him at all. In fact, it was one of the easiest things he had to deal with and he spent several hours a day at it while Harper was at school and Ava was trying to get back to work.Catching up with the rest of his life was what was difficult though. Nothing made sense, and so he had to go through all of his stuff, trying to find out more about his current than he already knew.He managed to find out a lot just by doing this. He had always been very organized and used to keep journals that documented his daily life.Apparently, he still kept these journals and they were all arranged neatly on a shelf in his library. He went through each and every one of them, trying to catch a glimpse of the man he now was. She smiled at him and slowly came out from behind the chair. Derek had no idea for how long she had been hiding there, but it seemed that it had been quite a while.“Daddy…” She said and without warning, rushed at him and embraced him tightly with more strength than he would have expected a child to have.Derek awkwardly patted her back and embraced her too, not sure if he should pick her up, kiss her cheek, ruffle her hair, or anything like that.“How are you?” He asked her, wincing as soon as the words left his mouth. He sounded like he was having a formal meeting with some board of directors or something like that, not talking to a child. However, Harper didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she made his decision for him by raising her arms, indicating that he should pick her up.“I’m fine, daddy.
