Chapter 3

Author: Cloudsearcher
Zeke was one of Trevor's personal secretaries. When he saw Celeste's resignation letter, he was extremely surprised.

He was one of the few in the company who knew about the relationship between Celeste and Trevor.

Anyone familiar with Trevor knew that he didn't love Celeste. So, he had been cold to her and rarely went home after their marriage.

To get closer to and win over Trevor, Celeste had chosen to work at Fleming Group.

Her initial goal was to become his personal secretary, but Trevor refused vehemently. Even when Arnold stepped in, he couldn't get Trevor to agree. In the end, Celeste had to settle for a position in the secretarial team, becoming one of Trevor's many ordinary secretaries.

At first, Zeke had worried that Celeste's presence in the secretarial team would create chaos. But to his surprise, she didn't bring them any trouble. Although Celeste used her position to get closer to Trevor, she was mindful of her timing and never overstepped her boundaries.

On the contrary, she worked diligently and performed exceptionally well, hoping to gain Trevor's respect. Whether during her pregnancy, childbirth, or any other time, she strictly adhered to company policies and never sought special treatment.

Over the years, Celeste rose to become the head of the secretarial team. Zeke had observed her feelings for Trevor from the sidelines all the while. To be honest, he had never imagined she would resign one day. He felt skeptical about her willingly giving up her position.

Something must have happened between Celeste and Trevor for her to resign now. Zeke understood that this was something he wasn't privy to—it must be something significant enough for Trevor to have ordered her to resign.

While he found it a pity, Zeke maintained a professional tone. "I acknowledge that I've received your resignation letter. I'll arrange for someone to take over your duties as soon as possible."

"Alright." Celeste nodded and returned to her workstation.

After working for a while, Zeke started an online meeting with Trevor to report on company matters. As the conversation neared its end, he suddenly remembered Celeste's resignation.

"Oh, Mr. Fleming, there's one more thing—"

Although Zeke had told Celeste he would quickly arrange for someone to take over her position, he wanted to gauge Trevor's thoughts on the matter first. If Trevor wanted Celeste out immediately, he would make the arrangements right away.

But as the words left his mouth, he remembered that when Celeste first joined the company, Trevor had explicitly stated that all matters regarding her employment should be handled per company regulations. He made it clear that there was no need to report anything to him since he wouldn't concern himself with her.

And indeed, over the years, Trevor had never actively inquired about Celeste's work at the company.

Even when he encountered her at work, he treated her like she was a complete stranger.

When Celeste was set to be promoted a couple of years ago, the team had hesitated. Everyone was aware of Trevor's dislike for her. They had even brought it up with him to gauge his opinion back then.

Trevor had frowned in annoyance and reiterated that he wouldn't interfere and that they should handle it according to company policy. He had emphasized that they shouldn't bring up Celeste's matters with him again.

Seeing Zeke's hesitation, Trevor frowned. "What is it?"

Zeke snapped out of his thoughts and quickly replied, "Oh, it's nothing."

Since Trevor was already aware of Celeste's resignation but hadn't brought it up, it was clear that this matter wasn't important to him. So, Zeke decided to proceed as usual and handle the matter according to company regulations.

With that resolved, Trevor ended the call.

"What are you thinking about?" At noon, a colleague patted Celeste on the shoulder.

Celeste came back to her senses and smiled, shaking her head. "Nothing."

"Don't you need to call your daughter today?"

"No, not today."

Typically, she called Jordyn twice a day—once at 1:00 am and once at around 12:00 pm.

Her colleagues at work were aware of this habit. What they didn't know was her daughter was the child she had with the company's CEO.

After work, Celeste went to the supermarket. She bought some groceries and a few potted plants before heading home.

After dinner, she browsed online for information about the upcoming technology exhibition.

After that, she made a call. "Please reserve a ticket for next month's tech exhibition for me."

"Are you sure?" the person on the other end replied coolly. "The last two times you asked me to reserve tickets, you didn't show up. Do you know how many people's lifelong dream is to get one of those tickets? You wasted them thoughtlessly."

The annual tech exhibition was a major event in the industry, and tickets were not easily obtainable.

Their company had a limited number of slots, and many IT elites working for them eagerly vied for the opportunity to attend it.

"If I don't show up to the exhibition this time, I will never ask you to reserve a ticket for me ever again," Celeste promised.

There was silence on the other end before the line disconnected.

Celeste knew that he'd agreed. The corners of her mouth tugged upward into a smile. What she hadn't said was that she wanted to return to the company.

Though she was one of the partners of her tech firm, she had stepped back during its early days to focus on marriage and family. Her decision had disrupted their development plans and cost them many opportunities.

Her colleagues had been both angry and frustrated with her. Over the years, they had rarely been in contact.

While Celeste was eager to return, she knew she had been out of the industry for too long. If she went back unprepared, she was worried she wouldn't be able to keep up with the company's current pace.

So, she planned to spend some time familiarizing herself with the industry's latest developments before making a concrete decision.

For the next few days, Celeste focused on her work during office hours and spent her evenings tending to her own matters. She didn't reach out to Jordyn or Trevor, and they didn't contact her either.

Celeste wasn't surprised. For over half a year, her communication with them had been one-sided. They had only passively responded to her efforts.

Meanwhile, in Andostan, Jordyn had developed the habit of calling Wynn first thing every morning.

That day, she called Wynn right after waking up as usual. However, the call didn't last long before she burst into tears.

Wynn had told her some bad news. "I'm going back to the country soon."

Devastated, Jordyn finished the call and immediately phoned Trevor. "Dad, did you know about this?"

At his office, Trevor flipped through some documents. "Yes."

"When did you find out?"

"It's been a while."

"Dad, you're so mean…" Jordyn hugged her pink stuffed pig and cried loudly. "I don't want Wynn to leave. If she's not here, I don't want to go to school here anymore. I want to go back too!"

Trevor's tone remained even. "It's already being arranged."

Jordyn didn't understand. "W-What do you mean?"

"We're going back next week."

Jordyn jumped out of bed in excitement. "Really?""Yes, really," Trevor replied."Then why didn't Wynn tell me just now?""It was just finalized. She doesn't know yet."Jordyn was ecstatic. "Dad, let's keep this a secret from Wynn. We'll surprise her when we go back to the country, okay?""Alright.""You're the best, Dad! I love you so much!"After hanging up, Jordyn was still overjoyed. She sang and danced on her bed. After a while, she suddenly thought of Celeste. For the past few days, she had been in a great mood because Celeste hadn't called her. In fact, to avoid talking to Celeste, she had deliberately left home early and even turned off her phone or kept it far away from her after school. But after two days, she was worried that Celeste might get angry if she found out. So, she stopped doing that. To her surprise, Celeste hadn't called at all in the days that followed. At first, she thought Celeste had discovered that she was deliberately avoiding her calls. Over the years, Matthias and Celeste had rarely seen each other. Yet, even from just a few encounters, Matthias could tell that she was no longer the confident and spirited person she had once been.Matthias thought back to the Celeste he knew from the past. He could never have associated the word "insecure" with that individual. He didn't know much about Celeste's marriage to Trevor, but he was completely clueless about her sorry state which was essentially an open secret. He had his suspicions but didn't voice them. Instead, he sincerely encouraged, "Falling behind for a time doesn't matter. Your ability and talent surpass that of most geniuses. As long as you're still passionate about this field, it's never too late to start again."Don't forget that you were our teacher's favorite student throughout his entire career."Celeste smiled as she listened to him. "If he heard that, he'd probably scoff and say that he didn't have much of a choice and could only settle on the least bad

Caught off guard by their sudden encounter, Celeste froze mid-step.Trevor also seemed slightly surprised to see her, but he assumed she had just returned from the business trip and didn't think much of it.He passed by her coldly, his face expressionless. As usual, he treated her like she was a stranger and turned to enter the building. In the past, if Celeste had found out that he'd suddenly come back, she would have been overjoyed. Even if she couldn't throw herself into his arms in such a scenario, she would have been very happy and excited. Her eyes would light up as she greeted him. Even if Trevor remained indifferent, she would have smiled and wished him good morning enthusiastically. But now, Celeste merely glanced at his handsome face before lowering her eyes. There was no longer any trace of the joy and excitement she once felt.Trevor

The two colleagues beside Celeste stole glances at Wynn and hurriedly stepped back, pressing themselves against the wall.Wynn noticed Celeste too but quickly looked away. Her expression was indifferent, and she acted as if Celeste didn't exist. She stepped into the elevator with the managers surrounding her.As the elevator doors closed, Celeste's two colleagues breathed a sigh of relief before resuming their excited gossip."That must've been Mr. Fleming's girlfriend, right? Wow, she's stunning! Look at all those designer labels—what she's wearing must cost a fortune! As expected of someone from an affluent family. She's so confident and poised. Compared to us ordinary people, she's on a different level!""Exactly!"They turned to Celeste and asked quietly, "What do you think, Celeste?"Lowering her eyes, Celeste answered lightly, "Yeah, you're right."Wynn was, in fact, the illegitimate daughter of Harvey Locket, Celeste's birth father.Well, the term "illegitimate" wasn't e

But her reserved nature made her unremarkable. Hence, she was just not Trevor's type.Because Trevor kept his distance from her, they too looked down on her. They hadn't seen Celeste many times, and even when they did, they rarely greeted her.In truth, Miles couldn't quite remember what Celeste looked like. He wasn't even sure if he had indeed seen her. But even if it had been her, it didn't matter to him.He said nothing more and returned to the private room.…Celeste didn't notice Miles. After leaving the restaurant, she took Lottie home and stayed over to take care of her. When Lottie woke up and saw Celeste, she hugged her gratefully. Jacob's expression darkened as he accused Celeste of taking advantage of her position. "This isn't the right work attitude to have, Ms. Rodriguez. Do you think this is your home?"Celeste picked up her bag, unfazed. She retorted, "If you're dissatisfied, you're welcome to dismiss me right now.""You—" Jacob began. Although he had accompanied Trevor to Andostan, he was aware that Celeste had already submitted her resignation.Even though he had Trevor's trust, the company didn't revolve around him. He didn't have the authority to fire her on the spot. Moreover, Martha favored Celeste. If she went to Fleming Manor to complain about him, Jacob knew he wouldn't come out unscathed even if he had Trevor's support. Not bothered to get a response from Jacob, Celeste walked past him and left.Jacob's face turned purple with anger as he stormed out of the secretarial office.Zeke noticed his sour expression and asked, "What happened?"Instantly, Jacob recounted their whole exchange.Zek

Trevor didn't think much of it. He assumed that Celeste had gone back to the Rodriguez residence. As he entered the bathroom, he suddenly remembered that Celeste typically brought Jordyn with her whenever she visited Betty. But this time, she hadn't done so.Could she have gone somewhere else?Perhaps something urgent had happened at the Rodriguez residence. Flashes of Jacob's remarks from earlier that day crossed his mind, confirming his suspicions.Trevor paused for a moment but ultimately decided not to concern himself with it.The next morning, Trevor said to Jordyn over breakfast, "Your enrollment process is complete. You'll start school tomorrow morning.""Got it." Jordyn scrunched her nose. "Can you take me to school tomorrow, Dad?""I might not have time.""Alright then." Her eyes lit up. "I'll call Wynn later and ask her to take me to school."Before Trevor could respond, his phone rang. It was a call from Fleming Manor. When he answered, he heard Martha's voice come

Celeste couldn't help but find it laughable as she listened. Wynn and Trevor had met only after her marriage to him. So, Wynn was fully aware of her relationship with Trevor. There was no way Harvey didn't know that Trevor was her husband. He had definitely known about it all along.Yet, he shamelessly encouraged a relationship between Wynn and Trevor. It showed just how little regard Harvey had for her despite the fact that she was also his daughter.Trevor agreed to Harvey's request. They then exchanged a few more pleasantries. Celeste watched as Trevor waited for Harvey to get into his car and leave. Only then did Trevor get into his own car and drive away.Given Trevor's status, he rarely extended such courtesy unless it was to a few select elders of the Fleming family. Clearly, he held Harvey in high regard because he was Wynn's father.Celeste thought back to the times Trevor had met Betty and Ivan. His attitude had always been cold and indifferent. Even when she cautious

Wynn didn't panic at all when she heard that Trevor was at the Rodriguez family's party. After all, Martha had such a close relationship with Betty. She'd definitely let Trevor attend Betty's 70th birthday on her behalf since she couldn't make it herself.Wynn had known this long ago. Still, she was a little upset even though Trevor was there because of Martha's order. When the crowd found out that Trevor went to the Rodriguez family's party instead of coming here, they assumed something had happened between Wynn and Trevor. Wynn remarked in a cold voice, "Madam Daniels and Madam Klein have a good relationship, and Trevor was only there as instructed by Madam Daniels."There had been rumors that the Rodriguez family and the Fleming family were on good terms. But people hadn't seen them interacting with each other before, so they only took it as a rumor.Perhaps it was true then, judging by what Wynn had said. At that moment, someone came in. They had a gift box in their

"Yes."Linda scoffed. "That's so shameless of her!"Just talking about that made her upset. "Could it be that they have a great connection, which is why such a significant person is attending her birthday?""No," Wynn replied coldly. "They just barely know each other." From her perspective, Celeste got to know Zachary through Matthias. So, the reason why Zachary was there today was probably because of Matthias."Oh, okay," Linda said.Beck and Miles were sitting at the table beside Wynn's, right behind her.Initially, Beck was quietly enjoying his meal. He paused for a moment when he heard how Zachary was at Betty's birthday party. He asked, "The Rodriguez family's birthday party?"Miles then explained, "Oh, today's the birthday of Celeste's maternal grandmother. The parties for the Rodriguez family and the Shaw family are on the same day, and the guest lists coincide. Thus, most of the overlapping guests are attending this one because of Trevor and Wynn."Miles had no prio

Celeste was sitting beside Zachary. He was still talking to Betty, and he hadn't spared her a glance yet. Celeste turned a little to Matthias. "Thank you, Matthias."She could tell that Betty was in a much better mood after Zachary came. "There's no need to thank me." Matthias shrugged. "Mr. Newman just happened to reply to me regarding the project you came up with not long ago. Then I told him about this, and he came. So, really, you should be thanking yourself."As Celeste was about to speak, she heard someone mention Trevor's name. Hesitating for a moment, she turned around, only to see Trevor at the entrance. With all eyes on him, he approached Betty with steady steps. "Happy birthday."Then, he handed the gift box to her and said, "Just in case the first gift wasn't to your taste, I brought another. I hope you like it."Betty didn't realize Trevor would attend at all. Yet his arrival didn't bring joy to her.Sure, the Shaws were shameless, but without his support,

With that, Matthias interrupted, "Can we hold off for a bit, Mr. Rodriguez? There's someone else coming, and they should be here in ten minutes."Ivan was well aware of how Matthias and Celeste were connected.Matthias had always taken care of Celeste as well. Hence, Betty and Ivan were pretty grateful to him. Upon hearing what Matthias had just said, Ivan asked, "Is he by himself? We still have empty seats at the main table if he doesn't mind joining us.""He's totally okay with it," Matthias replied. "Okay."Ivan nodded and instructed the staff to serve the other tables first, while their dishes would be served later. As the first few dishes arrived, Matthias glanced at his phone. Then, he pulled Celeste aside and said, "The person is here. I'll go get them."Celeste nodded. The moment she turned around, she heard a familiar yet icy voice. "No need, I'm here already."Celeste was stunned. She immediately turned around. "Mr. Newman?"Zachary hummed a reply. The remaini

Just then, Beck and Miles arrived. The moment the Shaws and Lockets noticed the two, they went up to them. After all, these two were anything but ordinary in Baumond. It was only natural that they held the two in high regard. Linda had already met Beck before. The moment she laid eyes on him again today, a blush crept onto her face, barely concealed by her makeup.Ruby laughed, seeing Linda's reaction. The Harpers were just as distinguished as the Flemings, and with Beck's remarkable qualities, the Shaws were more than happy to see Linda take an interest in him. With Wynn and Trevor a certainty, and now Linda and Beck potentially forming a match, the Shaws would definitely hold undeniable power in Baumond in the future. Seeing the endless stream of arriving guests, Patricia and Mason were all smiles. It was just as what the Rodriguez family thought, they did remember Betty's birthday. No, in fact, after so many years of celebrating Betty's birthday, forgetting it was simply out of the question. Thus, it was no coincidence that they held their housewarming party today. They couldn't help but fume, thinking back to how they had planned to move across from the Rodriguez family, only for Celeste to interfere and enlist Trevor's help, throwing their plans into disarray. But Trevor later made up for it, and ironically, they ended up better off because of it. It made them even more delighted, thinking about how they had scheduled their housewarming party to clash with the Rodriguez family's event and successfully diverted their guests. "Their party must be nearly empty now, huh?" Linda stifled a quiet laugh. "They couldn't even keep their guests after all that effort. It's just humiliating at th

Some of them didn't want to cross Trevor. However, some of them were eager to establish good relations with the Lockets and Shaws. After all, the Rodriguez family had been struggling quite a bit in recent years. The Lockets and Shaws, on the contrary, had Trevor backing them up, so it was clear what the right choice was. Robert left after apologizing to Ivan. Betty and Adeline didn't pay attention to it at first. As more guests arrived and only to leave shortly after, and with the meal about to begin, fewer and fewer people remained in the banquet hall. A lot of seats were left empty, and they finally realized something was off.Frowning, Betty and Adeline walked over and asked, "Why have so many guests left? What happened?"Ivan and Celeste were at a loss for words. At this point, they could only tell them the truth. Jordyn didn't notice the indifference in Celeste's tone. She breathed out a sigh of relief upon hearing what Celeste had just said. Ivan handed his gift to Betty, and Celeste followed afterward. The first gift she gave Betty was an embroidery painting. "Grandma had Trevor help prepare this painting for you."Betty took the painting, unfolded it, and examined it for a while. It was exactly what she wanted. Smiling with satisfaction, she said, "How considerate of her."Next, Celeste handed the emerald jewelry set to Betty. "This is from Trevor."The jewelry set was of exceptional quality. Betty liked it a lot. However, since it was a gift from Trevor, she closed the box and put it away right after she took a glance at it. She remarked in a neutral tone, "It looks lovely. Pass along my thanks to him for me."She never asked whether Trevor would come to celebrate her birthday. She didn't care enough to ask, nor did she want to. Celeste knew Betty wasn't fond of Trevor. Basically, Trevor wasn't going to attend the celebration. Why did Celeste have to ask any further then? Thus, without adding anything, she ended the call.Celeste used to ask him every year to join her at the Rodriguez residence for Betty's birthday. However, Trevor didn't seem to realize that she hadn't asked him this year. After Celeste ended the call, he handed the phone back to Jordyn and said, "Mom will be fetching you to Granny's place tomorrow night. Make sure you listen to her on Saturday and don't go anywhere."Jordyn pursed her lips. "But…"Trevor remained silent, staring at her expressionlessly. Jordyn then realized that there was no room for discussion. Hence, she mumbled reluctantly, "Okay…"Trevor nodded. "Good girl." With a pout, Jordyn insisted, "But I want to go see Wynn on Sunday, and you have to come along.""Alright," Trevor replied with a faint smile.…On Friday night, Celeste went to the Fleming manor after work. She noticed Trevor right after she
