After dealing with the dude outside, Trey stepped back into the house. The dude, Brandon or something still bothered him but he was pretty sure they would be long gone before he grew enough balls to call the police. At the moment, he was still fuming over the fact that someone else was contending for Hailey’s love. He was so into Hailey it felt sick. Trey wondered why it disgusted him so much, it wasn’t like he was vying for a role in Hailey’s life. The whole thing was just a duty he was bound to fulfill and nothing more. Then Trey noticed it, the absolute stillness of the house. There was nobody else in here with him.
“Fuck!!”
He went through the rooms and then found the one she had jumped through it’s window. He knew her scent and tracking her wouldn’t be an issue. He just hoped he wouldn’t be too late. He dashed out of the house, running past a bewildered Brandon. The dude wouldn’t even have a clue, he thought. As he followed the scent through the neighboring yard, he thought about what would happen if he botched this mission. Things weren’t going so well for him already and if something to Hailey, it was going to get much worse. The others would make sure of it. This had been his chance to at least redeem himself but now….he didn’t even want to think of what might happen.
Trey was just getting there when he saw Hailey and her friend come out of the cafe. His first instinct was to rush there and cart her off to safety. On second thoughts, he knew it wouldn’t be such a good idea. They were too many people here and so he decided to at least try and talk with her. Trey increased his pace and was soon some steps behind the pair. He whistled and they both turned in reflex. He could see the shock and fear on their faces. It was unmistakable but it couldn’t be helped.
‘Hailey don’t do this, it’s not safe”, He deadpanned, cutting to the chase immediately.
“I don’t feel safe with you”, She called out and the two quickened their pace trying to escape him.
“C’mon let’s talk with this over.” He tried to reason with her.
“Really? Now you want to talk?.” This came from her friend. Obviously, Hailey had filled in her in on what happened. Trey let out an exasperated sigh.
“See, I don’t know what or who you are and right now I don’t even want to know anymore.” She said this with an air of finality.
Dang it! Talking wouldn’t cut it and so Trey quickened his pace. He didn’t even know even know what he would do when he got closer to them, he couldn’t just force them to do whatever he wanted. They were in public. Hailey and Peggy nearly jumped out of their skins when they saw him getting closer. They started running and he gave chase. That was when a police officer hollered at him. Things were just worsening by the minute. Everything was already complicated and adding law enforcement to the list of problems wasn’t necessary. Trey turned and fled in the opposite direction while the police followed in his patrol car. Just before he ducked into an alley, Trey turned and saw Hailey and her friend board a bus. He’d have to find her later. In another alley, a figure had been watching the whole drama with great interest. As soon as Trey disappeared from sight, the figure hopped on a Bike, lowered a helmet visor and sped after the Bus.
The first thing they did as soon as they stepped into Peggy’s apartment was to lock all doors and windows. Though, a part of Hailey thought it was silly considering what had happened earlier at the motel. She didn’t say it cause she hoped nothing like that would happen here. Peggy’s parents and brother had travelled for a relative’s wedding so the place was pretty much theirs. The two of them dropped on the sofa, drained and exhausted. They stayed there awhile, each lost in her own thoughts, eyes looking at the ceiling but seeing nothing.
“I still can’t believe something like this is happening”, Hailey finally said.
“Me neither”, Her friend echoed.
“Like this is some movie shit”, She mused.
“Yeah, like maybe he has super powers or something like that”.
“Like super hearing?!”
“Exactly”. Peggy nodded in agreement. The two laughed at how absurd the idea was.
“You know at one point, I thought you planned this”.
“What?, Peggy asked with a laugh, why on Earth would I arrange something like this?”.
“I don’t know”. Hailey shrugged. “To create some excitement in my life, I guess.” Peggy stared at her with incredulous eyes before saying “Sweetie, this is way too much excitement!!”
“I thought so too”.
Peggy started laughing, quietly at first then more loudly. Hailey listened to her laugh for some time before joining in. They laughed freely and unabashedly for a while. When they finally stopped , Hailey quietly asked “Why were you laughing?”
“I don’t even know”, Peggy said and started laughing once more. Hailey had no option but to join in again. They laughed until the two of them were too tired to anymore and soon after, they drifted off to sleep. The events of the day had taken it’s toll.
A light tap roused Hailey from sleep. She forced her eyes open to see Peggy standing over her.
“What ?”, she asked drowsily.
“I think someone’s trying to get into the house”, Peggy said in a whisper. The sleep clogging Hailey’s eyes before vanished momentarily and she jerked up immediately. “What did you just say?”
“Shhh”, Peggy said sharply. At that same moment, the apartment was plunged into darkness. Hailey swallowed hard. She didn’t like this one bit.
“I’ll get the flashlights”, Peggy said, still whispering. She patted Hailey on the head, a reassuring gesture. Then she tiptoed away. Hailey wanted to follow her but she was aware that it’d be hard for her to make her way through the darkness. It would be quite easy for Peggy seeing as she lived here. Holding onto Peggy would only slow her down. So, she sat still, apprehension and fear getting the best of her. In the darkness, her brain conjured images, terrifying things that wasn‘t there. Not withstanding, it still scared her. Then suddenly she heard glass breaking followed by Peggy’s scream. Strength surged through her and she stood up, making for the direction it came from. She hit a couple of objects on her way to Peggy but it didn’t matter. She started seeing streaks of light from what she presumed to be the passage and she followed it. Eventually, she got to the kitchen. The Kitchen was a conventional one in which several cabinets lined the walls. These small, square cabinets probably contained cutleries. Then in the middle of the Kitchen was a huge rectangular concrete slab. It was all tiled over.
The first thing she saw was the Flashlight, lying on the floor flickering a bit. The first thing she heard was Peggy crying. Then she saw him. IT. Illuminated dimly by the flashlight on the floor. He had long hair that came down to his chin, his eyes were slits that glowed green. Shiny in the partial darkness, an aquiline nose and a mouth full of bared sharp teeth. The monster had the semblance of the person from that horrible night. He held Peggy in front of him, by the shoulders just as he had held her. Tears streamed Peggy’s face uncontrollably. Yet, she mouthed the words “Run!” to Hailey. It broke something in Hailey.
“Please let her go, She knows nothing about this!!”. She cried coming out of the shadows which hid her.
“Then give me what I want”. His voice sounded guttural, unnatural and scary but still had that accent. “You tell me and she lives”.
“Hailey run!!”, Peggy shouted. She winced as the Monster’s claws dug deeper into her skin as punishment for the small act of rebellion. The green eyes focused on her.
“Where is the Blood Orchid, Hailey Brookes?”
“I….don’t>>>>know,” She replied with a sob. She wished then that she knew, she wished that the Blood Orchid was in her possession. She would have given it to him no matter the value or importance.
“Wrong answer”. Hailey watched the long, dark claws swipe at Hailey’s throat. She watched Peggy try to wrest her hands from his grasp in order to hold back the blood gushing from her slit throat. She watched her best friend try but fail. Peggy mouthed another “Run” before falling face first on the Kitchen floor, the blood streaming out from beneath her and staining the white tiles. It seemed to Hailey like she was watching from a distance, she didn’t even realize the person shrieking and screaming was her.
The monster that killed Peggy was approaching her. She saw a hideous smile on the part of his face illuminated by the flashlight. A smile that said he was enjoying himself. He walked slowly and surely towards her. He ran his claws along the tiled Kitchen top, creating a grating sound. Hailey willed her body to move but it wouldn’t, it seemed like death or whatever that was about to happen was inevitable. It was what fate had in stock for her. He was a few steps from her and already reaching out for her when it happened. Suddenly, there was more shattering of glass and then a loud growl. The monster turned and gave a short laugh. If something that hoarse could be termed a laugh. “I was expecting you, Wolf boy”. From behind him, Hailey saw the outline of a man in the dark. The fallen flashlight wasn’t tipped towards him but Hailey knew it was Trey Kristov. His eyes glowed like the monster before her, although his was a light shade of blue. Didn’t he deny having anything to do with them
The car pulled around and then parked. Hailey stood there bathed in the blinding glare of the headlamps. She shielded her eyes trying to see what exactly was happening. She feared it was the Russian who had killed Peggy coming back to finish her off. If it was him, she didn't think they was strength left in her to run anymore. Her body was at a point beyond exhaustion. So, against her better judgement, she just stood there waiting. Waiting for whatever or whoever was coming. The car door opened and someone stepped out with the engine left running. The person seemed to be focused on her and she couldn't even see his face. She just knew he was masculine from the boots she could make out but it somehow occurred to her that it wasn't the Russian. At least that was something. She did however wonder who was the latest addition to the freak show that was her life. Hailey was at loss of what to do next when he started walking towards. An undescribable feeling caused her to shudder and she gra
Hailey woke up to the sound of car horns and to hear Ryan cursing. Apparently, a car had overtaken him in a way he didn't approve of. She watched him swear through clenched teeth that released a couple of unsavoury and vulgar words. He might have noticed her staring as he turned to look at her. "Hey there, sleepy head", he said with a bright smile. The other person who had been cursing and swearing was gone in an instant. The man was quite a specimen. "Did you sleep okay?" "Yeah", Hailey barely mumbled out. Now that it was morning, she could see his features more clearly. He had sky blue eyes that crinkled when he smiled. The long hair looked unkept but had a sheen to it. His sideburns also were untrimmed as were the hairs beneath his jaw. He had a scar running from the line of his jaw onto his neck. He was an attractive man, Hailey thought, although an unkept one. "So, what do you think?". Ryan's voice broke into her thoughts without warning. "Think of what?", She asked wonderin
Hailey felt like apologizing for having asked that question but on second thoughts decided it was best to not mention it again. No need poking in a sore spot. "So, the wolves live in packs just like the movies right?", she asked. Ryan was quiet for the better part of a minute, obviously considering whether to continue the conversation or just ignore her. Eventually, he made up his mind and replied with a monosyllable."Yeah""Cool. Like how many are there?"He laughed all of a sudden. Was her question that stupid? But at least he was laughing and maybe that was a good thing. Was the question that dumb?” She eventually asked him.“Not really, He said still laughing, given that you don’t know much about the Supernatural World.”Hailey just nodded, his reassurance having the opposite effect of making her feel incredibly stupid. She didn’t know what let him on but Ryan seemed to know how she felt and tried to make up for it. He launched into an essay trying to explain why he laughed.
Somehow it felt as if the World around her was swimming. Hailey at first wondered if she had heard him correctly. Then when what he had said sank in, she felt her new found strength dissipate and fizzle away. She stared down at her shoes trying to gain control of the chaotic thoughts that now plagued her. “Is this a joke or what?”, She didn’t even know when the words sputtered out of her mouth. But even before Ryan answered with a nod and a grim look on his face, she knew the answer to that question. He was not joking. Now that she thought about it, everything made sense. She was a pretty ordinary girl and nothing could have connected her to things like this except her scientist Father. Her dead father. The one who was never really around even when he was alive.“You do know my Father’s dead right?”“Yeah. Car crash, fifteen years ago”.It seemed like everyone in this world knew everything about her. Was she that important or was it what they hoped she knew that made her a valuab
It had only been a few hours since Ryan left her with Trey in a little clearing not far off from the highway. He hadn’t said much to her since he mentioned the poison. He hadn’t explained why he finally chose this clearing after they had been on the road for a while. He had driven them to the clearing with a speed that an F1 racer would definitely enjoy. He then mumbled something about an antidote, a tent and coming right back before driving off. He had left them with a camping back pack and some blankets. Not knowing how to go about building a tent in the backpack, she was seated now on one of the blankets spread on the grass cradling Trey. His convulsions had stopped but when she mentioned it to Ryan on their way here, he had stared at Trey grimly ,said it was worsening and then stepped on the pedal. Trey’s labored breathing snapped her out of the reverie and she looked down at him. The poison's effect was visible on his body, dark green lines making it’s way through his body. W
Exhausted and worn out from the day’s exertions and drama, sleep had come easily to Hailey. As soon as Ryan had set up the tent properly and the now recuperating Trey was comfortably settled, she had snuggled into one of the sleeping bags. Briefly, her mind wandered over the things she had learnt in the past few days. The existence of a super natural world, her father’s role and also her expected role in it. It was truly overwhelming and even if she hadn’t been completely wiped, contemplating things as complicated as that was sure to lull her to sleep. So, she slept. Hours later, she woke up from a nightmare. For a moment, she was disoriented and wondered where she was. She took one look at the figure still sleeping beside her and things started coming back. Trey was still unconscious from the look of things but he seemed better now. The bleak light in the tent revealed that his pallor was now normal. She stared at him as he slept wondering what it would be like feel that
Dawn came with a majestic brilliance. The sun dispersing golden and blinding rays to a still waking world. It was a beautiful sight. Hailey sat there observing the sun as it made it’s slow progression across the sky. She felt herself warm up with a contented feeling, a feeling she hadn’t known since the event of that tragic night. The fire had eventually died and still there was no sign of Ryan. As she suspected, he had simply wanted to be alone with his thoughts. Or away from her prying eyes and questions a mocking voice said to her. Hailey felt like going back into the tent to check up on Trey but she was afraid of what she might do. As things stood, she couldn’t trust herself around him. So, she sat there staring at the smoke wisps from the embers of their camp fire. Occasionally, she flung a dead leaf or twig into it and watched it flare up before turning to ashes. That was exactly how Ryan found her when he returned. He was carrying an armful of dead tree branches and parts
Eventually, they agreed that Boston was the best place to lay low. This was after Ryan had rejected several other options and gotten on everybody’s nerves one way or the other. It was agreed that they would head for the next day. They would try to lose whatever tail they might have within the day. Around 3 pm, Ryan declared that he was utterly famished. He suggested the purchase of food from any restaurant or diner that they happened to come across next. Hailey was elated at the idea, the past few days had been absolute horror in terms of feeding. When she spied a McDonald’s down the road, she was salivating and nearly drooling. Especially as she thought of the Big Mac which she felt like she hadn’t eaten in ages. So, she was more than disappointed when Trey sped past it without as much as a backward glance. Her stomach grumbled angrily at having been teased but denied. She was about to howl at him but Ryan beat her to it.“Dude! Did you not see that McDonald’s or what?!”“I did”,
HAILEY’S POV After her little argument with Trey over who should drive the truck, she had decided not to say a single word to Trey. She knew that he was still healing from that run in with the Leviathans and that considering his current state, she was best suited to drive. He had however refused claiming that he was okay. She knew he was doing it out of a misguided sense of keeping her safe. Then again, he didn’t think she could handle the car should they need to escape a pack of angry Leviathans or something like that. It annoyed her when Men thought like that. It seemed like the two she travelled thought she needed their constant and ever watching protection. The funny thing was that they had barely known her for a week. Hailey could take care of herself and she intended to prove that to them. Hadn’t she survived the death of her distant father? Hadn’t she proved herself when her Nana passed on and she had to stay on her own? They didn’t know her and yet they presumed things abou
TREY’S POV Ryan told him exactly what he feared. They both agreed that the best thing was to leave the campsite and running. They had no particular place in mind but to Ryan at the moment even the North pole was better than just waiting there. Ryan said he felt like they were sitting ducks waiting for the picking and Trey couldn’t agree more. The two woke up Hailey and explained what they were up to. However, she was still under the clutches of sleep and didn’t really comprehend. She just went to the car and continued her sleep. The two then packed up quickly and prepared to leave. Ryan decided to spring a trap as an afterthought. Once he was done, they drove off. Ryan drove initially, a grim face and taut hands on the steering wheel. Obviously, he was still afraid of running into the Leviathans. It was only when they had gotten enough space between them and the Woods that he began to relax. Trey had said nothing throughout but he found the whole thing funny. Ryan never really took a
“ For fuck’s sake man! What should we do about it?”, the shorter man exploded. His eyes flashed and his voice was steadily rising. Dmitri fixed him a hard stare as he stood up. He brushed the dirt from his trousers and walked away. He could feel the man’s eyes bore into his back as he strode away. He didn’t really care, nobody was stupid enough to attack him. Especially not a fellow Leviathan. A quick search found him what he was looking for. A contraption so simple yet deadly. It involved a crossbow set up with some levers and a thin wire. The bow released whenever the wire snapped. He had seen something like this before. It was in a run in he had with the Brotherhood. This meant that they had anticipated their arrival. More importantly, it meant that hunters or a hunter had been here. He couldn’t tell if that meant they had gotten to the Wolf boy and the girl first or whether they were now working together. Things were really getting out of hand. He pulled out one of the arrows stu
The truck slowed down and parked by the side of the road. Dmitri stepped out, the wind flapping at his long coat. It seemed to be getting more windy lately and he didn’t like it. The truth was that he resented everything about the country. He had no particular reason, it was just something he felt deep down. If he could have it his way, he would be back home but unfortunately he couldn’t. He still had business that was far from finished. One that was going rather poorly. His employer was already breathing down his neck. The man in suit was not pleased with the way things were currently going. He had lost Hailey Brookes again. He had also been bested by the wolf boy once more. A bitter taste crept into his mouth as he thought about the last part. No one got the better of him, at least nobody alive. The Wolf boy had done so twice, he was definitely going to make sure it never happened again. Dmitri felt a pang of excitement as he visualized breaking Trey Kristov’s neck with his bare han
RYAN’S POV It was years of training and sheer willpower that kept him still. He had nearly swung the Scimitar on Hailey Brookes. It was only someone with keen observation that would have noticed his body’s reaction and how the hand holding the blade trembled slightly. He calmed himself and then turned to her.“You shouldn’t just sneak up on someone holding a weapon”, he said. Ryan hoped that he looked as demure as possible.“That was no answer”, She replied in a flat tone.He sighed knowing it wouldn’t be that easy to shake her off.“What was your question again?”. It was her turn to sigh now.“I just wanted to know if you think the Leviathans have tracked us here”.He didn’t think, he was certain of that. All his senses were screaming flee but he couldn’t do anything.“No, I don’t think so.” To convey his lie properly, he looked her squarely in the eye. He held her gaze for a moment before looking away.“What’s with the guns and blades?”, She queried. It seemed like a Brooke trait t
HAILEY’S POVDusk was fast approaching and yet he continued to sleep. He had been in that state since the incident yesterday. His eyes had only opened a few times and in those times he wasn’t able to communicate or indicate anything. She had stuck by his side hoping that maybe the next one might be different but nothing had happened so far. Her mind kept on replaying the incident over and over again. Trey standing up and trying to storm off, the way he had staggered and then fell. Even Ryan’s quick reflex reaction was too slow and he was already on the ground before he could get to him. She had screamed involuntarily. It embarrassed her now as she thought about it. Hailey kept on telling herself that it was just a case of nerves but somehow it didn’t quite feel that way. It wasn’t something that she liked thinking about. Ryan had been in and out of the tent since then. She could sense he wasn’t all that okay with the development. He had been slightly agitated and didn’t even say
The voice for some surprising reason startled her. Maybe what was more surprising was the fact that her heart suddenly seemed to start beating faster. She dismissed it as jumpiness but she knew for a fact that it had to do with the man walking towards them. With disheveled hair, old jeans and a worn out blanket draped around him, Trey Kristov still looked quite charming. No one should look this good in this Hailey thought but here he was proving how wrong she was. He walked with a slight limp and Ryan rushed to his side. He however shrugged off the attempt at help and continued his determined walk. Eventually, he made his way to the tree they had retreated to when the sun became too hot for them. He lowered himself onto one of the logs with a grimace of pain. Hailey suspected that he hurt more than he was trying to let on.“What were you guys discussing? I’m pretty sure I heard my name.” His voice had a hint of accusation and suspicion. He looked challengingly at her and then Ryan.“
The name came as a surprise to Hailey. She wondered briefly what role he had played in Ryan’s life. It seemed like a huge part seeing that he had included him in the story. Her curiosity got the better of her and she voiced it out. “Who’s Father Hugh?”He smiled at the question. A shadow of a smile. It conveyed that the person in question meant something to him.“He was the hunter who tracked me down. He basically trained me and made me this”, Ryan finished with a sweep of hand indicating himself.“Ohh”, that was all Hailey could utter.“Yeah, he continued, the hunters had started noticing bizarre attacks starting from my parent’s death. Father Hugh was among those sent to investigate it. The police had initially thought that I also died during the attack but had no evidence to support it. Father Hugh’s investigation in the case led to him tracking me down and eventually recruiting me into the Hunter guild.” It dawned on Hailey then that maybe this was the first time Ryan was openi
