"Ezeudo!" An old woman who was known as the old woman of the cave called as she approached the king's palace.

She was halted at the entrance of the king's palace by the king's guards. If only they knew why she left her cave, they would have given her an easy passage. Her face was filled with excitement, however, the guards failed to notice.

The old woman was banished from the community by the King's father after she was accused of witchcraft. The woman left the village and settled in a cave that was situated outside the village, at the boundary between Uzofia community and Ohanta community.

Since she left the village, people had been visiting her secretly when they need spiritual help. They believed she wined and dined with spirits. All those who sought her help got the help they needed.

She was not to be seen anywhere around the village. This was why the guards recognized her and denied her entrance. The old woman continued screaming.

"Ezeudo! Ezeudo!!"

Ezeudo was caught off guard by the presence of the old woman. Astonishment was clearly seen on his face. As the traditional ruler of Ohanta Kingdom, he was not supposed to be seen anywhere around the woman. He recalled the secret journey he made five years ago and why he did that.

His reign had nearly come to an end when Ajonwa took his daughter, the only Princess of Ohanta who was just fifteen years old. The thought of what she would face in the den of a lion devastated the king. He was thrown into mourning for one full year.

The people of Ohanta were sad about the disappearance of the Princess. Some were happy because no king had ever made an attempt to put an end to the nightmare. The villagers believed the king and his predecessors were reluctant in view of the fact that none of them had experienced what the people had been experiencing on yearly basis.

Having felt what the people feel each time their children got kidnapped, the king decided to sit up and take a bold step secretly.

"Are you going to leave me here?" The old woman's words brought Ezeudo back to reality.

"Let her in!"

Ezeudo ordered the guards at the entrance of the palace who stopped the old woman from entering. She was ushered into the king's courtyard. The woman strode happily and Ezeudo wondered why she was happy.

"You were banished from this Kingdom by my predecessor on account of sorcery and witchcraft, what are you doing in my Palace?" Ezeudo asked.

"Oh really? You should have thought of that before you visited my abode crying like a newborn baby." the old woman said contemptuously.

"Are you here to mock me?"

"No, but to tell you that the egg laid by your hen has hatched."

"Sit down," Ezeudo said pointing at one of the wooden chairs in the Palace courtyard. The old woman sat down on one of the chairs and fixed her humorous grey eyes on the king.

"How many chicks do I have?"

"One!" The old woman responded. Her response amused the king and he laughed.

"Woman, please tell me why you are here. You need to leave this Palace at once before people see you here."

"They saw me coming, but none of them have not visited me secretly."

"Five seasons ago, you visited my abode. You cried like a wounded warrior. The Princess of Ohanta, the mirror that reflects beauty has been taken by the evil spirit, who has caused so much pain in this community."

Ezeudo lowered his gaze, tears flew down his cheeks. He wiped his tears with his palm.

"The messenger you asked for is on its way to Ohanta Kingdom!" A bright smile was fixed on the old woman's broad face as she opened her toothless mouth.

Ezeudo rose up from his royal chair. His mouth felt suddenly dry, and goosebumps sprang up all over his bare arms. His hand on his chest, Ezeudo recalled what he felt the day her daughter disappeared.

"The gods have finally accepted your sacrifice and your request considered." The old woman said.

"Please, woman of the cave, tell me where the messenger is right now. I hope he is well equipped? I know he would be, he is a messenger from the gods. Where is he now?" Ezeudo asked with a shaky voice.

"One question at a time your Majesty."

"Ikenga! Ikenga!!"

"Father!"

"Please come"

Ikenga was the first son of the king, the crown Prince of Ohanta. He was barely four years old when her sister was kidnapped.

"Take your brother to your mother's chamber. I want to make use of your chamber, go go go."

"Agu!"

"Your Majesty!" One of the guards outside the courtyard answered.

"Please come" Agu bowed before the king.

"Go to my sons' chambers and put it in order. A messenger is on its way to this Kingdom. He is not an ordinary messenger, but one from the gods!" Ezeudo laughed victoriously.

"The messenger is in Mazi Ileka's household." The old woman chipped in.

"Mazi Ileka,  from which community?"

"Mazi Ileka from Ajala village."

"My Kingdom? Oh! I'll fetch him at once. Agu, let's go."

"Your Majesty! Please wait!"

"I'll see you when I return, in fact, you can go back to your cave. Tell the gods that their message was well received and I am grateful." Ezeudo said with so much happiness as he mount on his horse back, his guard did the same.

Ezeudo and his guard left the old woman in the palace courtyard and went in search of the messenger from the gods.

The third wife of Ezeudo hastened to the courtyard to find out what was after them. She was disconcerted by the sight of the old woman.

"There is no need to be disconcerted my daughter, your secret is safe but please stop. The road which you have chosen leads to destruction." The woman told the Queen who was already shivering.

The road to Ajala townlet seemed as though it had been extended by Ajonwa deity. Ezeudo had no time to exchange pleasantries, so all the people who met them on their way were disappointed by his silence. He had a lot going on in his head. He wished the messenger of the gods would go down to Ajonwa's shrine and rescue his daughter immediately.

Ezeudo breathed a sigh of relief when he entered Mazi Ileka's compound.

"Who am I that the great Lion of Ohanta Kingdom visited my household." Mazi Ileka cried out the moment he saw Ezeudo standing right in the middle of his compound. Though he was utterly perplexed, however, he suppressed his bewilderment. He knew a toad does not run in the daytime for nothing. "Onochie!" "Father!" Anine, who was looking furtively through a hole on the widow of her hut answered and stepped out. "Greetings your Majesty."Ezeudo waved back at her without a word. He was more concerned about the messenger he came to fetch. A messenger from the gods deserved to be fetched by the King himself, so he believed. "Where is your husband?" "Father, Onochie is not yet back from the farm." "Get two seats for us, gently please." Mazi Ileka said delicately. Since the news of her pregnancy got to him, he had been treating her like the Queen of Ohanta. "Do not stress the poor girl." Ezeudo intervened. "Em Mazi Ileka, I heard you have a visitor." Ezeudo's disappointment was apparent as he sank into his royal chair weakly and covered half of his face with his left palm. He went into deep thought. The disappearance of the Princess contributed to the death of his first wife, the Princess's mother. She was the only child of her mother and everyone adored her. Ezeudo would have become a dead man if not for his second wife who was there for him. The news about the new messenger was supposed to be a good one to Ezeudo, however, since he had lost hope of seeing his daughter soon, he could not explain how he felt about the news. "Who did you sacrifice in exchange for a warrior from the gods?" The voice of Ezeudo's third wife who walked into the courtyard unnoticed brought the king back to the real world. He gaped at her in silence. Ugo had been a troublemaker since Ezeudo got married to her. The fact that she bore two sons for the king made her to be more proud than the second wife who had no child. The rainy season was the most important season to the people of Ohanta, since the majority of them were farmers. The first rain that falls after the harvest season announces the beginning of planting season. The long-awaited rain had just arrived. People took their children to the farm. Each child in every family had a hoe and cutlass. The hoes and cutlasses were made according to the age of the children. Onochie's mother had no one that would help her in her farming activities. Onochie, her only son had his own farm because he had married and was expected to take care of his wife and unborn child by himself. This was why Anine insisted that she would always accompany her mother-in-law to the farm. Anine got up so early, she had not been going out lately due to her protruding stomach. She informed her husband that she would be going to the farm with their mother. "No Anine you are not going anywhere!" Onochie shouted at her for the first time since he got married to her. "Nne tol

"The prophecy is not true, I don't believe it." Mazi Ileka said after listening to his son. "The woman is clearly confused, I think she might probably be insane. Ajala village crowns the king. We are the least in this Kingdom and no magic can change that. The throne of Ohanta is ancestral. A father passes it to his son. Cheer up son, nothing is happening." Mazi Ileka patted his son's back. "Tomorrow you will go and see an old woman, a beneficent and venerable old woman of the cave, full of wisdom and skilled in prophecy. She only reveals what she sees according to people's composure. If you can't handle the truth, she will hide it from you and speak in parables." "Papa, the same witch, and sorcerer you told me that was banished from this village? No, I'm not going." "She is not a witch, she was just gifted and the king misunderstood her." Mazi Ileka explained. "How?" "She was a great woman, a healer, a prophetess, and a warrior. She was more powerful than the king himself. Th

Since the king had not come out to refute the rumor, the villagers believed the rumor was correct. While some were jealous of the child, some were happy for her. They sat down after admiring some beautiful paintings made on the wall. The guard left to inform the king about their presence. Soon the king joined them in the courtyard. "Long live the king of Ohanta! The biggest masquerade that dresses! The great Lion of Ohanta! We salute you." Mazi Ileka praised Ezeudo as he walked into the courtyard. Onochie stood up and greeted the king. Ezeudo smiled and urged them to sit down. He sat on his royal chair and cleared his throat. "A toad does not run in the daytime for nothing. Where a child cries and points his or her finger, if his or her father is not there, the mother must be there." Ezeudo began. "Mazi Ileka, you must be wondering why I visited your house three seasons ago, asking for a messenger and a warrior." Mazi Ileka nodded and leaned back against the wall, while his son looked puzzled.

"Your Majesty, the gods are always right, but I disagree with them on this. No one wages war against a destructive spirit. She was born with the strength of three men, yes, the old woman told my son before her death. However, one does not need mortal strength to fight a spirit. The gods are wise but this time they failed by choosing the wrong person." "I was more devastated when I was told that the messenger is a girl. I was expecting a well-armed warrior like Ike, the chief guard. The gods are always wise. They see things we could not see that is why they know better than us. But one assurance I'm giving you today is that she will win the battle and put an end to this nightmare." Ezeudo assured.

The people organized a small ceremony for her and Nwife. They led them down to Ikpa land before bidding farewell to them. The youths of Ikpa insisted she must go with the four-wheeled donkey she won when she was on her way to Umuora. It was a straight journey back to Ohanta as they were already familiar with the paths. *********** "Where is the sword?" Ezeudo of Ohanta asked Ije when she had finished her story. "It has been taken down to the shrine," Ije responded. "By who?" The people chorused. "The only man I trusted with my life." Oja had tried everything possible to make sure he separated both of them, but all his efforts proved abortive. He realized they were so in love the day he caught Nwife giving Ije a sponge bathe. It took him one full moon to be himself again. Since the solution to the problem of the two communities lay in the wizard's cave, Ije had decided to stay as long as the star appeared. Nwife also tried to convince her to go and return when the start would likely appear, but he gave up on her insistence. Soon they began to explore the community and were quite happy with the people. The people treated Ije with so much kindness. She found it difficult to leave without liberating them. The long-awaited day had come and Nwife and Ije were on their bed. Since he had been the one bathing and cooking for her, Ije got so comfortable around him. She could tell him everything and do everything while

He leaned against a wall and was lost in thought, trying to find a way of separating the two of them. A maid can with her breakfast and brought him back to reality. He took the food from her and knocked. Nwife let him in and tried to leave after greeting him. Oja waved at him to stop. Nwife knew he was jealous and would probably ask if he slept with her. "Thank you," Oja shook hands with him. Nwife accepted his handshake and stared surprisingly at him. "For what?" He asked. "For saving my brother last night." The people sang and danced for more than two hours. Food was served to them and they ate together and went back home. The king was surprised Ije ate comfortably with them. Soon she began to feel sleepy and needed to bathe before going to bed. Oja led her to the backyard, and Nwife followed them. This is where the chosen one comes in." "Your people should do what they asked of them. It is a very simple task, I thought they were demanding a hundred heads in retaliation for what the wizard did.
