Chapter 148

Hazel's POV

"I... I ... I am sorry," she all but murmured as she approached.

But as she came closer, I realised that I might as well make someone else uncomfortable since I was not in the best of moods myself. And so I put on a facade of sweetness, a mask of false kindness to hide the contempt that simmered beneath the surface.

"Ah, Selene, my dear," I said, my voice dripping with obviously false charm as she set the tray down on the table beside me. "How thoughtful of you to bring me food."

Selene flinched at my words, her movements hesitant as she avoided my gaze. It was almost amusing to watch her squirm under my scrutiny, to see her discomfort writ large upon her face. But I had little patience for her cowardice, little tolerance for her weakness.

"You're welcome, Hazel," she murmured, her voice barely more than a whisper as she busied herself with arranging the dishes on the tray.
