To Layla's disappointment, she didn't hear back from Atreus in the next couple of days after they had dinner. She had tried her best to not let it bother her that she had gotten ghosted, but that was proving to be difficult. Especially after the amazing kiss that she and Atreus had shared that night.

Nonetheless, Layla went about the rest of her trip trying to enjoy her last days in Rome. While she did have an amazing time and plenty of laughs with Mia by her side, her betraying thoughts kept going back to Atreus.

On their last day, the two girls were in their hotel room packing their belongings and getting ready to catch the plane back home. When Layla picked up the dress that she had worn on her date with Atreus, Layla's melancholy turned to anger. She rolled up the shimmering gown and chucked it into her suitcase with a huff.

"Whoa," Mia said from across the room. "Was that a mini temper tantrum I just witnessed?"

Layla continued to stuff clothes into her suitcase without saying anything.

"Dude, forget that guy," Mia, said crossing the room and putting her hand on Layla's shoulder. "If he is such a tool that he can't see what a catch you are, then screw him."

Layla sighed and turned to Mia. "I don't know what's wrong with me. I've never been played like this before. It would be one thing if it was just some guy, but I really had a connection with him. For a second, I thought he felt the same way," Layla said with a huff and threw her toiletry bag into the suitcase. "I guess I was just too starstruck to realize that it was one-sided."

"You just need a change in environment. As soon as we get back home and you can get back to your regular routine, you will feel better," Mia said, consolingly.

But the thing was Layla didn't want to return to her regular routine. Going back home now after having experienced even the one night with Atreus, it all seemed so bland.

Layla pouted her lip childishly.

"Aw, do you want to go get another gelato from the place down the street one more time before we leave?" Mia teased, also pouting her own lip.

Layla nodded with a whisper of a smile.

"Ok, let's go get you a gelato," Mia said, her voice like a mother consoling a child.

With a giggle, the two girls walked out of the room arm in arm.

Layla and her classmates all arrive at the airport a couple of hours later. They are going through bag check when Layla felt that familiar electric sensation on the back of her neck. She glanced around the airport terminal which was bustling with people. Her eye scanned the crowd, part of her wishing she would see Atreus there.

But this wasn't a rom-com where the guy chases the girl down in an airport to profess his love.

With one more fleeting glance across the room, Layla vowed right then to leave all of the emotions that were dragging her down in this city. She wasn't going to let them follow her back home.

With that determined thought, Layla picked up her carry-on and walked away from Rome.

After a long twelve-hour flight and an hour cab ride that she shared with Mia, Layla was finally home. Having said goodbye to Mia minutes ago outside of her dorm room, Layla walked up the steps to her own apartment. She unlocked the door and slipped inside the dark room. She dropped her luggage unceremoniously right inside the door and flipped on the lights.

Everything seemed to be exactly as she had left it. It was a studio apartment with simple furnishings. Her small white desk was covered in memorabilia while a few paintings her friends had done in their art classes lined the walls, and a flat-screen TV sat directly across from her alluring bed with its silky purple comforter.

Jet-lagged and starving, Layla made her way to the bathroom to shower and change into her pajamas. After her shower, she flopped onto her bed and flipped the TV on for some background noise before ordering takeout.

It wasn't long before she fell asleep watching late-night cartoons.

"So you think you can escape me now that I've found you?" That familiar low voice brought Layla out of deep sleep.

Layla gasped as she sat up straight in her bed. She looked around the room, the TV was shut off and darkness filled the corners with shadows. Her eyes landed on the glowing eyes coming from the chair next to the bed. This had to be a dream because she wasn't scared at all.

"Who said I was trying to escape?" Layla retorted, sliding her legs off of the bed and facing Atreus who watched her quietly. "You never came back like you said you would and you didn't give me a way to contact you either."

He sat there with his legs crossed and his chin on his hand, looking ever so casual in her bedroom.

"I told you I would find you," he said simply.

"Well now that you have, what do you want?" Layla asked, putting her hands on her hips.

Atreus was quiet as his eyes bored into hers. A smile lifted his lips.

"Take off your clothes," he said, his voice husky.

Layla stared at him for a moment before returning his smile.

"What if I say no?" she asked daringly.

"Love, you don't want to find out." His voice was dangerous and it sent a thrill of pleasure through her.

Layla did as he commanded and slowly lifted her silken nightshirt above her head, revealing the naked skin of her breasts before tugging at the waist of her pants and slipping them down her thighs. Atreus watched her hungrily as she straightened in nothing but a pair of lacy panties.

Layla had always had some insecurities about her body, not having the lithe figure of a model, but with voluptuous curves at her hips and a*s. Those insecurities were none existent under the roving eyes of Atreus. He drank her in as if he were thirsting to death.

"Come here, Layla," he said, gesturing with his finger.

She did as she was told and walked over to him slowly. He didn't make a move just yet as he continued to examine her naked body which glowed in the moonlight.

"You are like a goddess, do you know that?" Atreus muttered quietly as he lifted his hand and ran a single digit down the curve of her hip, his eyes never leaving hers.

Layla bit her lip as the coolness of his touch sent a thrill through her. Gently, Atreus took her hand and guided her closer to him. When she was close enough, he grabbed her by the back of her thighs and pulled her into his lap in a straddling position in one swift movement.

Then he slid his hands along her naked back until they reached her hair. Tangling his fingers into her silken locks he brought her mouth to his in a fervent kiss. They stayed like this for endless moments, drinking in the taste of the other with swift and precise movements of their tongues.

Layla brought her hands up and ran her fingers through his ashy blonde hair, enjoying the growl that she had elicited from Atreus' mouth. This caused him to kiss her deeper, hungrier. Just when Layla didn't think she could take any more sensation, Atreus thrust his hips into hers causing Layla to gasp into his mouth.

Atreus ran his fingers down her back and gripped her hips and guided her into a rocking motion and Layla couldn't help the moan that escaped her. She could feel his hardness against her center and it did nothing but make her want him even more as she rocked against him over again.

As if he could hear her thoughts, Atreus wrapped his arm around her waist and slipped one hand under her a*s then effectively lifted her into his arms and walked them both to the bed. Layla wrapped her legs around him, needing him closer still.

Atreus delivered her to the bed and started to kiss and nip her chin, neck, and collarbone. Layla tossed her head back in pleasure as he dropped his small bites against her skin. She could feel the dangerous sharpness of his canines as he grazed her tender flesh.

But that was nothing compared to when he reached down and slipped his hand into her panties. Layla squirmed with a moan of pleasure as his fingers pressed gently into her hot wetness. Her insides squeezed with desire as he slowly pumped his digits in and out of her.

His mouth moved lower as he pressed kisses to her hips before nipping gently at her inner thigh. Layla's mouth dropped open as she gasped his name. In response, Atreus peeled her panties from her hips and tossed them aside.

She looked down at him as he peered up at her with a lust-filled gaze before dropping his mouth and licking her clit in a slow languid motion. Layla cried out in pleasure as he kissed and sucked at her center.

Layla knew before she opened her eyes that she was dreaming. Again. With a loud sigh of disappointment, she stared at the ceiling alone and under her covers. Although she knew it was all a dream, her body did not. Her skin was electric to the touch and her core was tight and wanting.

"F*ck," she muttered, before burying her face into the pillow.

It seemed that her desire for Atreus had followed her from Rome after all.

"Hey!" Mia called from across the food court where Layla was grabbing a cup of coffee and a muffin. "Hey you, how was your first night back?" Layla asked, still feeling fatigued from her restless sleep. "Girl, I slept like a d*mn baby," Mia bragged, as she took a sip of her coffee. "Lucky you," Layla droned. "How could you not sleep? I was straight exhausted," Mia said. The two of them started to walk through the food court and toward the elevator that would take them to the fifth floor and their first class of the day. The only class they shared together this semester was their math course. "I hardly got any sleep," Layla groaned, taking a long drink of her coffee. "It's probably the jet lag," Mia commented, waving to someone across the room."Yeah, probably," Layla murmured, thinking about the dream she had the night before. "So, what are you up to today?" Mia asked. "You doing anything fun tonight?""No, I'm all funned out," Layla said with a laugh. "I'm going to s

Layla ripped her gaze from Ryan's and scanned the crowd. But trying to find someone in the flashing lights and moving bodies wasn't going to be easy. Especially if the person she was looking for was on a different continent. "Layla?" Ryan's voice interrupted her thoughts. "Are you ok?" "Yeah, sorry," Layla said, bringing herself back to the present. She needed to shake herself out of this funk. "Do you want to go dance?" Ryan smiled brightly. "Yeah, let's do it!" he said excitedly. Layla slipped out of her chair and Ryan grabbed her hand and led her out onto the dance floor. Ryan spun Layla ceremoniously causing her to let out a giddy laugh. Then he pulled her close to him and the two of them moved as one to the music. Ryan put his hands on her hips as they rocked together in tandem to the beat. They moved like this for a few minutes before Ryan dipped her, Layla giggled as he pulled her up. At that moment, they were nose to nose and Layla could tell by the intense look in Ry

Layla opened her eyes the next morning and shot up from her pillow with a gasp. She scanned the room. Thankfully there were no uninvited guests sulking in the corners. The morning sun shone brightly through her window and had effectively scared off the shadows of the night. She looked at the clock and realized that she had slept in until ten. Her first class was in thirty minutes and at that moment, Layla knew that she wasn't going to make it on time. With a groan, Layla crawled to the foot of the bed and reached down to grab her cell phone out of her pants pocket from the night before. Phone in hand, Layla crawled back under the covers and unlocked her phone. Of course, there was a text from Mia, wondering how her night with Ryan had gone. To her disappointment, there was no text from Ryan, which gave Layla a pang of guilt. Layla opened a text message to Mia.Layla: I need an emergency latte :P I'm going to take the day off. After skipping class the day before, Layla decided she needed to spend the next day studying for her finals, which were only a couple of weeks away. Layla left her apartment and decided to walk to the library. It was across campus, but she needed an excuse to get out of her funk and walk off some of the pent-up energy that had been building since her date night with Ryan. She and Ryan left their lunch date on good terms the day before after Layla reassured him that nothing bad was going to happen to her regarding Atreus. So far that had been the truth. Layla hadn't seen or heard from Atreus since that night. If it wasn't for Ryan witnessing him alongside her, she was prone to think that she had imagined Atreus crashing her date. So, why was it that Atreus' absence disappointed her? Instead of relief, she felt an emptiness. Alongside those feelings, she felt angry. First, at herself for pining after some stranger as she had been, and second at Atreus for causing the emotionally tr

Over the course of a week, Layla had spent the entire time studying for finals. Mia had come over a few times to join her and Layla had grounded her from bringing any alcohol of any kind. Mia only argued once before giving in to the pressure of her own studies. Throughout that entire week, Layla had not seen or heard from Atreus. Periodically, she would stop in the midst of her work and think about him and the last time she'd seen him. He must have taken what Layla said to heart and moved on. While this was disappointing, it was probably for the best. She needed to get back to her regular life and let go of all the conflicting thoughts that seemed to be attached to Atreus. Layla was currently at her desk finishing an essay for her history class. As soon as she typed the last paragraph, she stretched and let out a loud sigh. If she did one more minute of studying she was going to explode. Standing from her desk, she made her way into the kitchen to grab a snack and a soda. Makin

"Looks like you found me again," Layla said, turning towards the looming figure in the corner. Atreus watched her with his predatorial amber eyes. "I was beginning to think that I had just made you up," she commented, walking towards him with a slight sway in her steps. "In fact, you could just be a figment of my imagination right now." Atreus approached her and stopped an arm's length away. "Your drunk," he stated in his deep voice. "Yeah, I am," Layla confirmed putting her hands on her hips. "And you're a vampire." A flash of surprise lit his eyes as he watched her, then a smirk lifted his lips. "I am," he said, lifting his hands up and brushing her hair from her shoulder. "What gave me away?" Layla let out an unladylike snort. "What didn't give you away? You keep popping up out of nowhere. You eat raw meat. I've never seen you in the daytime. The list goes on…" Layla turned away from him and went to take a step toward the bed when her equilibrium failed her and she

Throughout the day Layla was following Mia through the cruise ship like a zombie, still trying to process what had just been confirmed by Atreus' presence here. She felt like she was in some kind of movie with all that had been happening; this kind of stuff didn't happen to people like her. The question that kept repeating in her mind was why? Why her? "So I was thinking that we should check out the shows tonight," Emma suggested, before taking a bite of her meal. The sun had already sunk behind the horizon as night fell across the ocean while the four girls were eating. "Sure," Mia said happily, "that sounds fun!" Layla was only half listening to the conversation as she stared down at her plate that she'd hardly touched. Her thoughts were on Atreus. She was imagining Atreus' pearly skin, his full lips curled up in a smirk. The way he looked at her as if she were the only girl in the room. The cool touch of his skin. And those amber eyes that glowed with desire and hunger.

The next morning, Layla woke up before the other girls so that she could sneak out of the room. She needed some time alone to think about the night before. On her way down the hall, she texted Mia to tell her she was going to take some time alone and not worry about her. Layla walked leisurely through the ship, watching the crowds of people go about their morning. Many filled the restaurant as she walked by, sipping from champagne glasses and munching on pancakes. As she walked out onto the deck, the sun was shining brightly and reflecting off of the aqua-blue water. Layla started to make her way down the deck, her eyes on the water. Her thoughts went to Atreus. To his word, he didn't text her and she hadn't seen him or felt him since last night. She thought about his lips on hers and the thrilling sensation of his touch and the way he looked at her with want and desire. Just pictu

A couple of weeks later.Layla sat quietly on her towel, letting the sun kiss her skin. People chatted as they walked past and kids laughed and played, splashing one another with water. She sipped from the cold tropical drink in her hand and watched the waves clash with the shore in soothing rhythmic motions. That and the feeling of her toes in the sand made this moment completely perfect. With a sigh, she shook her hair from her shoulders and closed her eyes against the warm rays of the sun, basking in the peaceful energy of it all. "Girl, you're still nursing that drink?" Mia asked as she plopped down beside Layla with a huff. "Here I am with two drinks in my hand, thinking you might need a refill." "I will happily take that burden off your hands," Layla said with a grin, looking at Mia with a renewed appreciation for her friend. "Gimme." Mia laughed as Layla took the second drink and set it down beside her. "What's got you in such a good mood lately?" Mia asked suspicious

Layla gritted her teeth, as resolve steeled her gut. She wasn't going to run. She was going to fight until the bitter end. Glancing around, Layla looked for the First Chosen's wooden stake. She spotted it not far from the skirmish between the three vampires who battled against one another viciously. She bolted toward it, keeping her eye on Ravana, hoping that he wouldn't spot her. She swept it off the ground and turned toward the conflict and watched, waiting for an opportunity to strike. Cairo and Ravana were exchanging blows and Niniane was standing on her feet with shaking legs. She bolted back into the fray without hesitation, trying to catch Ravana off guard. Ravana roared with rage when Niniane managed to strike him in the arm with the stake. He grabbed Niniane by her throat and with brutal strength, he threw her hard against the stone wall. Niniane slid down the wall unconscious. "Niniane!" Layal cried, clutching the stake to her chest. Just then, Ravana struck out

"Oh, God!"Layla ran to him desperately, a fleeting thought of how he'd managed to get the dagger running through her mind. Had he returned to the cemetery the night she was kidnapped to retrieve it? When Layla reached Atreus, his skin was still burning under the sun's unrelenting power. Ravana watched with a cold expression as Layla used all her strength to pull Atreus from the circle of light. Slowly, one tug at a time, Layla tugged Atreus' slack body until he was safe in the shadows. Turning him on his back, she dropped to her knees beside him and put her hands on his cheeks, trying to ignore the brutal cauterized wound on his throat caused by the dagger. "Atreus?" she sobbed. "Please, please don't go." Yet, the more that she tried to wake him, the more apparent it was that he was gone. His beautiful face, although covered with red blist

They were still in Atreus' cabin at the moment just before Nolwenn had pulled her into the celestial garden. "Good choice, my dear," he said with a sneer as he transported them from the cabin. In the next moment, Layla found herself back in the audience chamber of Ravana's castle. Layla looked up at the stained glass mosaic of the sun on the ceiling then dropped her gaze and gasped. Right below it was a kneeling Atreus. He was chained down by what looked like iron chains with silver glints throughout. Layla could see how the chains burned at his flesh because his wrists were raw and pink with blisters all around his skin. "Atreus!" Layla called to him, going to move toward him when Ravana gripped her hand tighter, holding her back. Atreus looked up at her and the anguish that appeared in his eyes when he saw her, pierced Layla's heart with devastat

Layla was alone once again, sitting on the bed inside the cabin as she waited for Ravana's return. Her nerves were shot and she was still unsure of the plan that Niniane had helped her devise. All she wanted to do was run away from it all, but she couldn't leave Atreus to face such a horrible fate. So she sat and waited with the stake tucked into her jeans, praying that their plan would work. Just as Layla wondered once again when Ravana was going to make an appearance the all-familiar sensation of her surroundings warped around her with inky black smoke. Standing, Layla looked around for Ravana's cruel face. He stood mere feet from her and watched her with his fierce amber eyes. Slowly, a smile lifted his lips, revealing his pearly white canines. He watched her silently, his eyes sidling up her figure with a slow purposeful gaze. "Your beauty… it never fails to enthrall me," Ravana said, his voice dripping with honey. Layla glared at him. "If you want to see your precious Atreus alive again, you had better tell me where you are." Layla's heart stopped for a moment as fear overtook her. No. It couldn't be true, Ravana had to be deceiving her. There is no way he could have overpowered Atreus. Or… was there? Layla swallowed as her throat went dry and her heart began to thud against her chest. "You're lying," Layla managed to croak out. "How do I know you're not bluffing?" Ravana sneered cruelly at her. "I have no reason to lie. How else do you think I could have managed to weaken the shield he had placed on your mind? But, if you truly don't believe me, have a look for yourself." The visions that swirled around Layla projected an image of Atreus chained up. He was shirtless and his face was covered in sweat and grime. He looked to be in pain as he gritted his teeth, pulling at his shackles. "Atreus!" Layla called out, but he didn't look up at her. A second later, the image was gone and it was only her an

Layla shot out of bed with a cry. Her heart pounded hard against her chest as she tried to regain her bearings. To her relief, she had woken from the horrible nightmares that had tortured her through the night. No light shone through the window, so she hadn't been asleep all that long. With a loud sigh, Layla scrubbed her face with her hands. The images of her dreams were still raw and fresh in her mind. She pictured poor Alita's prone body in Atreus' arms as he raged over her death and the sounds of Atreus fighting for breath under Ravana's cruel grip. "F*ck," Layla whispered with a shudder. What was all that anyway? Layla wondered. Was it a vision from Alita? Layla didn't think she had the capacity to come up with those images on her own. It had to be Alita's influence. Layla's throat was dry and her heart was still pounding, so she slipped out of bed and walked out of the bedroom and into the main cabin area. She half expected to see Atreus brooding somewhere inside, but as

Layla was sitting in a beautiful bedroom. A bright, yellow, heavenly light glowed through large ornate windows that prevented her from seeing anything outside. There, in front of the elegant four-poster bed Layla sat upon, was a luxurious vanity with vintage combs and turquoise hair barrettes scattered across the top. A giant antique mirror on top of the vanity showed Layla's reflection. But as Layla looked closer, she realized that it was not her she saw in the mirror. It was a beautiful woman with long silky black hair and deep blue eyes. The dress the woman wore was gorgeous. The only believable lie she could come up with is that she lost her phone and spent a few days without any service or means to contact people because she took a last-minute trip with Atreus to a remote vacation destination. Mia grilled her endlessly about how worried she'd been and terrified something horrible had happened to her. After another half hour of apologies and assurances, Mia finally let Layla off the line.
