Dmitri didn't come home that night.
Even though he had returned a few minutes after he'd gone after Samantha and stood by Trinity's side for the rest of the night, he'd been distant. He was right there next to her the whole time, but at the same time, he wasn't. It wasn't that he was acting weird, but the difference was there and only someone who knew him closely could tell. The shift was much too subtle but it was there in the way his smile didn't reach his eyes or the way his laugh sounded almost plastic. Tyler noticed it too, for he shot Trinity a confused look, which she returned with an almost sad shake of her head.
The hold Samantha had over her husband was much too strong for her to even think of competing with. She was delusional if she ever for a second thought Dmitri felt anything for her. If he had, he wouldn't be feeling as guilty as he was right then, so much so that he was almost hesitant when doing something as simple as ho
It had been two weeks since Valéry had officially introduced her to the planning committee at their office and she'd started working with them for the fundraiser that was set to take place in six weeks. She'd only ever been to the office once the very first day with Valéry by her side. After that, she'd done most of the work from home, mostly because she hadn't felt the need to go the office yet. The team mailed her most of the documents that needed to be looked over and they talked over the phone often enough that the need to actually go sit at the office hadn't yet arisen. But today afternoon, a few of the art pieces they were going to put up for auction had arrived at the office and she wanted to have a look at them personally before the final deal was signed and the money transferred. So after a quick lunch, she quickly got ready. On her way out the door, she texted Dmitri on a whim to check if he'd had his lunch yet.T:- Hey! D
Trinity had been working diligently to get everything ready for the fundraiser in time for the past six weeks while managing her online classes at the same time which had gone remarkably well. The fundraiser had been a huge success through and through if there was anyone prouder than Trinity for pulling it was, it was Dmitri.Sure, all the planning and detailed discussions and brainstorming before finalising any decision had been exhausting, but she had truly enjoyed every bit of it. She'd learned a lot over the span of the past two months and even though it all had drained her so much that she fell directly into bed and fell asleep right away each night, it had all been worth it.What had been even harder and was becoming harder by the day though, was keeping her distance from Dmitri. Even though they'd both been busy, they'd still managed to have dinner and breakfast together for the most part
"Oh, you're home early!" Trinity jumped up from her spot on the couch, taking her headphones off as she watched Dmitri make his way into the main room."Yes," was his clipped response before he began marching in the direction of his room."Uh, Dmitri?" Trinity called out to him but he ignored her, continuing on his way to his room.Trinity frowned at his retreating back. What's wrong?Deciding to find out, she followed him to his room and then into his walk in closet when she realised sound was coming from in there.Dmitri was busy throwing clothes into a bag haphazardly, not looking up even when Trinity entered."Is everything okay? Are you going somewhere?" Trinity asked, her voice hesitant."Yes.""Where?""Chicago.""Why?"
Trinity threw her phone onto the couch with a huff. Every time she called Dmitri, it had gone straight to voicemail. It was the same with Tyler too. Dmitri clearly wasn't ready to talk to either of them and was avoiding their calls. And she hated it because she hadn't done anything to deserve this. She sighed as she trudged over to her room. She had skipped lunch because Dmitri had come in just before she was going to make something for herself to eat. She hadn't felt like eating anything after he'd left. She didn't feel like eating anything then too even though it was clearly time for dinner. She felt hopeless and completely exhausted. After she'd composed herself, Tyler had left the penthouse to go to the publishing house who had issued that article. She had been in her room when he'd left in the afternoon. It was nearly night now and she hadn't moved an inch from her spot o
The next morning when Dmitri still hadn't picked up or returned any of her calls, Trinity decided to visit the orphanage to get her mind off of his absence.Today, Valéry had sent the twins over to keep her company.God, she was lucky to have such caring friends and family. They knew that she was upset so they'd taken care to not leave her alone, at least not if they could help it.She'd only just finished having cereal and milk for a rather late breakfast because she hadn't felt like cooking anything for her own self when the bell had rang again.Thinking it was Casey or someone else, she'd let them in, only to realise that it was the twins and Angela when Natalia practically threw herself at Trinity as soon as the elevator door opened in typical Natalia fashion."Hello to you too, Nat," Trinity had chuckled, patting Natalia's head affectionately
The next morning, Trinity woke up to the sound of her phone ringing. She sighed, patting the bedside table, looking for her phone. Her sleep, however, completely vanished when she noticed it was Dmitri who was calling her.She sat up in bed at once. So he'd been avoiding all her calls for the past three days and today he decides to call her.Taking a deep breath, Trinity picked up the phone, "Hello?""Trinity."Boy, she didn't realise how badly she was missing him until he spoke. So much so that hearing his voice brought tears to her eyes almost instantly.Composing herself, she replied in the same professional voice he'd used with her. "Dmitri."A pause."We need to talk.""Oh, now you're ready to listen to me?" Trinity couldn't help but say.
Trinity was plating the food she'd brought from Simon's, humming a tune under her breath with a smile which seemed to have fixed itself onto her face almost permanently now when Dmitri returned to the kitchen, his hair still wet.Trinity looked up at him, her expression amused. "That, my dear husband, needs to be written down as the fastest shower in the the history of showers."Dmitri laughed, walking towards her until he was standing right in front of her. "I didn't want to be away from you for more than what was strictly necessary."Trinity blushed at his words. "You're such a cheesy romantic.""I'm your cheesy romantic."Trinity grinned, wrapping her hands around his neck while his came around her waist. "I quite like the sound of that," she murmured softly before leaning forward and kissing him.Dmitri sighed happily once they'd pulled back. "I could get used t
"Keep your eyes closed, no peeking," Dmitri said as he held Trinity's hands in his, guiding her."Well, duh, I couldn't even if I wanted to. You've blindfolded me," Trinity muttered as she concentrated on keeping one foot in front of the other so as to not fall down.Dmitri chuckled. "Almost there now, milaya. Then I'll take it off."After returning home, Trinity had quickly thrown on the dress they'd decided on before applying a light layer of make up, leaving her hair in soft tresses down her back like Joy had set 'em before she'd left.Dmitri had come in, all ready to go sharp at six like he'd promised with a bouquet of violet roses in hand, ones that matched the color of Trinity's eyes perfectly."They're beautiful. The color... it's just like my eyes," Trinity said softly, fingering a petal."Yeah, it took me some time to find the right color but here we
9 years later..."Nico! Come on, dinner is ready," Trinity called out to her son as she set the table.Dmitri had returned home in time for dinner as usual and was helping his wife set the table as they waited for their oldest child to join them so they could start dinner. When there was no response, Trinity turned to Nico's twin. "Nadia, go get your brother."Nadia, ever the obedient bright little girl, rushed off to do as her mother had asked of her."Mum, I'm hungry, can I eat now?" Maxim, their five year old asked, his lips pulled into an adorable little pout."In a minute, Max. Your brother will be here in a minute and then we'll all eat together. And what did I tell you about a family that eats together?""A family that eats together, stays together!" Max suddenly grinned, seemingly proud of himself for remembering what his mother
It was the third day when the police came to take Trinity's statement. She told them everything that had happened truthfully while Dmitri sat there right next to her, all the while holding her hand to show his support. She squeezed his fingers once she was done and the policemen left, promising to put the culprits behind the bars as soon as possible."Are you okay?" Dmitri asked her, pushing a strand of her hair away from her face as he rubbed soothing circles on the palm of her hand."I'm fine," Trinity whispered back. "I'm glad that that statement is out of the way. I hope they can catch those kidnappers soon.""They will, milaya. I'll make sure of it," Dmitri vowed, his expression grim."I just want this all to be over already," Trinity admitted softly.Dmitri stared down at her, his expression softening almost instantly. "Me
Screams echoed all around him but Dmitri couldn't decipher one voice from another, nor did he care to, as he jumped at Samantha on instinct so she couldn't fire the weapon anymore. She screamed as she fell and Dmitri wasted no time in snatching the gun from her and throwing it away.It took him a moment to realise that he'd jumped on top of a pregnant woman but the guilt vanished as quickly as it had come when he heard his wife's pained groan. He then quickly got up before running towards a bleeding Trinity, pressing his hands to the wound on her side to stop the bleeding. With his other hand he pulled out his phone and called 911."Hang on, tight, Milaya. I'll get you out of here," Dmitri said to her once he was done calling for the ambulance. The two kidnappers Samantha's had hired tried to make a run for it especially now that Samantha lay on the floor, sobbing hysterically with blood pooli
"You wanna go first, or should I?" The tattooed guy smirked at his companion, nodding his head at Trinity. His companion laughed, the scar running down the side of his face contracting, making him look almost maniacal. He probably was too if the way he stepped towards Trinity with an evil glint in his eyes was anything to go by.Tyler struggled harder against his reigns. "Don't you fucking dare touch her! I'll skin you alive if you touch a hair on her head!"Their kidnappers simply laughed at his useless attempts and baseless threats. Trinity, though, was oddly calm. She was waiting for either of them to open her bounds so she could grab the opportunity and try to get away from them. She planned on running upstairs and threatening Samantha so their kidnappers would let Tyler go. And then she'd call the police to come rescue them.It wasn't ex
Even though Trinity had expected the answer, she was still shocked."How? When?" She couldn't help but ask, thoroughly confused.Samantha chuckled. "That day at the club opening. I'd planned to drug you all and have my way with Dmitri. Unfortunately, I got too drunk along with you guys and it wasn't until I woke up that I realized it was Tyler I'd dragged into bed with me and not Dmitri. And it was his child I'd be carrying," her lips pulled into a thin line at the admission before pulling up into an all too evil smirk. "But nothing was going to stop me from getting what I wanted. So I decided to improvise. Pretended the child was Dmitri's and you fell for it right away."Trinity looked at her as if seeing her for the first time. And she was. She was finally seeing her for the two faced, conniving bitch that she was."Everything was going according to plan for you until I stepped
A piercing pain at the back of her head was the first thing Trinity registered as she came to, a groan leaving her lips almost involuntarily."Trinity? Trinity? Are you awake?" Came an urgent, frantic voice from somewhere close to her. In the back of her mind, Trinity knew who the voice belonged to, but in her half awake state, she couldn't quite put a finger on it.When Trinity didn't reply, the voice tried again, more urgent this time. "Trinity?! Are you alright? Wake up, please! Open your eyes! Talk to me!"Open my eyes? Trinity thought to herself. Opening her eyes seemed like the most difficult task she'd done in a while for her eyes felt heavier than lead, as if someone had glued them shut. She almost didn't want to try, but something at the back of her mind told her to listen to the urgent, nagging voice. So she did.She tried with all her might to peel her eyes open. She le
Trinity had been distracted with her jumbled up thoughts all the way back to their apartment.Casey, however, thought that Trinity looked so put out because of what she'd said to her in the parking lot. Which made her feel immensely guilty. So in an attempt to make things right, Casey began, "Tri? I was very rude and insensitive back there at the parking lot and-"Trinity cut her best friend off with a shake of her head, lightly patting Casey's injured leg which was lying in her lap as if telling her that it was okay. And it was. "No, Case. You were right about everything. And I needed to hear that. And I was thinking about what you said too. I think I should at least talk to Dmitri about it once," Trinity confessed."Really?!" Nigel, having obviously been listening in to their conversation exclaimed from the front seat, his lips pulling into a wide grin."Ah, fucking fi
Trinity wrapped an arm around Casey's back to support her as she pulled her best friend out of the car in the hospital's parking lot. Once Nigel had rounded the car and was standing next to Casey, supporting her, Trinity let go so she could lock the car."Ugh, stop mollycoddling me, you two. I can walk just fine on my own," Casey huffed, rolling her eyes.It was a few days after when Tyler had come to their apartment that Casey was due for a visit to the doctor to have a look at her still-in-a-cast leg. So here they were, in the hospital's parking lot, ready to go in."I hate to break it to you Case, but you can't. You can hardly put any weight on your leg, let alone walk," Nigel muttered, looking thoroughly amused as Casey huffed again, trying to balance her weight on her good leg.Suddenly, Casey pulled her shoulders back, looking awfully determined. And then she went ahead and put her weight on h
"Whoa, easy there," Dmitri muttered, holding onto the person he'd just crashed into on his way out of the office to his car."Oh, uh, hey," Samantha murmured, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear almost shyly as she stepped back, her hand going to her slightly rounded stomach almost reflexively."Samantha?" Dmitri looked down at her, stepping back completely.Samantha gave him a small smile as she looked up at him, taking in his unshaven face and the bags under his eyes. Clearly, the split up hadn't been good for him."Yeah," Samantha muttered, nodding a little."Wow. You're pregnant," Dmitri observed. "Congratulations on that." He continued, trying to make conversation. He'd been so busy drowning himself in work ever since Trinity left that he'd hardly talked to anyone if it wasn't work related. So making conversation for the first time in so
