“Phew!” Ophelia said, flipping her hair back as we walked toward her office. “That was a great lunch, don’t you think?”

She glanced at me, waiting for a response. I gave her a small smile and nodded. “Of course.”

We had barely spoken during the meal, so I was a little surprised she was talking now. I figured the silence earlier was because we were around other people. Maybe she didn’t like being open in public.

When we reached her office, she pushed the glass doors open and let out a deep sigh. “Damn,” she muttered, shaking her head. “I haven’t had lunch that big in a long time.” She rubbed her stomach and smiled.

I let out a small laugh. That wasn’t true for me. I ate like that all the time.

She walked around her desk and dropped into her chair, tossing her head back with another sigh.

“Have a seat, please,” she said, motioning toward the chairs across from her.

“Thank you,” I said, picking the one that looked softer and easing into it.

Ophelia leaned forward, resting

A knock sounded on my office door, followed by a slight creak as it opened.
I glanced up from the computer screen to see my secretary standing in the doorway.
“What is it?” I asked, already irritated.
“There’s a Miss Lydia here to see you.”
I nodded. “Send her in.”
Moments later, Lydia stepped into the room, a scowl tugging at her features.
“What’s with the face?” I asked, eyeing her as she moved across the room.
“I went to see your sister,” She said flatly.
“Ophelia?”
She shot me an angry look. “Do you have another sister I don’t know about?” With that, she dropped onto the couch, clearly annoyed.
“Is that why you look like you’ve just been slapped?”
She crossed her legs and leaned back, attempting to appear composed. “She was rude,” she said simply. “Exceptionally rude. Ugh, I hate how she makes me feel.”
I exhaled, dragging a hand over my face. “I can’t say I’m surprised,” I said, my gaze drifting to the window. “She’s on Christian’s team and she must have

I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection, searching for any signs that my body had changed since I found out I was pregnant.I still looked the same. Deep down, I knew this restlessness was just paranoia. It had only been a few days since I found out. What difference could several hours really make?
Still, the weight in my chest had only grown heavier. The thoughts in my mind, the nervousness, it all seemed to get worse with every passing hour.
A beep from my phone pulled me out of my thoughts. I glanced down at it on the dresser and saw a new email notification. It was an invitation to the Blackwood Annual Event, scheduled for three days from now.
I sighed and picked up the phone, opening the email. The theme caught my eye right away:
“A Night of Masks and Mystery – Gatsby Masquerade Ball.”
A small smile tugged at my lips. I remembered talking to Ophelia about it, wondering how she planned to turn such a big, flashy idea into reality and now, I could see

I sighed for what felt like the thousandth time, sitting in the lecture hall. Voices buzzed around me—conversations, laughter, whispers but none of it mattered. I couldn’t bring myself to care about anything they were saying.
The truth was, I didn’t care about much these days. I felt like everything was spiraling beyond my control, like my life had suddenly changed completely. Even the smallest things felt exhausting now, like tasks I’d normally handle without a second thought.
Maybe that’s why I hadn’t gone to see Mr. Sylas yet about the 30% he gave me on my project. He claimed it looked like I used AI, but I just didn’t have the strength to defend myself, not when everything else felt so tiring.
I’d spent all of yesterday in bed, replaying Lydia’s words over and over in my head.
“Is your brother okay?”
“Christian had to shove me out of his bed…”
I scoffed under my breath, biting down on my lower lip. What had I been thinking? That Christian Blackwood, the same man wh

I lay on my back in my room, twirling my phone between my fingers, debating whether or not to follow through with the thought that was stuck in my head.
Ever since the car ride with Christian, my mind hadn’t settled. His vague answer about Lydia only made things worse instead of calming me. Who was she to him really? And why wouldn’t he just tell me the truth?
He clearly had no problem sharing my secrets with her—about me, about my brother, while lying in bed with her, no less. So why did he suddenly go vague when the topic was about her?
I tapped my screen, then let it go dark again. I couldn’t decide. My fingers itched to act, while my brain warned me to stop. I even considered throwing the phone across the room and going to sleep.
But curiosity is a dangerous thing, and today, it won.
I pulled up my browser and typed in the name I swore I’d never search: Christian Blackwood and Lydia.
The moment the results loaded, my heart dropped and I forgot all about self-control.

As the car pulled into the parking lot of Blackwood Hotel, I took in the sight before me, excitement bubbling lightly inside. The building stood tall, decorated beautifully, its windows glowing warmly.
The engine quieted, and before I could move, Christian stepped out and opened my door. He held out his hand, his expression calm. “Here,” he said softly.
Even though I had promised myself not to let my guard down, I found myself smiling. He had made an effort tonight—the dress, the sweet note. And while my heart still twisted at the thought of his so-called favorite ex, I had agreed to come with him. If not for Christian, then at least for Ophelia. She’d worked too hard on this event, and she would have been disappointed if I hadn’t shown up.
Placing my hand in his, I lifted my dress slightly and stepped out. We walked toward the entrance, my gaze drifting over the decorations. If the exterior looked this enchanting, the interior had to be even more spectacular.
At the doo

The night carried on, and I watched as people waltzed across the dance floor, moving to the music with bright smiles and laughter.
To my surprise, even Mr. Blackwood was dancing, with a woman around his age, no less. A small smile rested on his face as he led her across the floor. So he did things like this? I assumed the Blackwoods were all too serious for fun.
I glanced away and spotted Michael dancing with his wife a little farther away. They didn’t look happy together, moving stiffly to the soft music.
Meanwhile, Christian and Ophelia were deep in conversation with a group of guests at a table far from ours, caught up in whatever they were discussing. That left just me and Lydia at this table.
She kept staring at me, not even bothering to hide it. I ignored her, but the longer it went on, the more annoyed I felt.
What gave her this sort of confidence to harass me constantly? Was it the fact that she once dated Christian? If you asked me, she was clinging to the past

I turned to Christian, meeting his gaze after Ophelia’s announcement.
“I’ll see you after the exhibit,” he said. “We have a lot to talk about.”
My heart skipped. I nodded, slowly letting my hand slip from his shoulder. I should have walked away, but curiosity held me in place. “What do we need to talk about?” I asked, hoping it was about the truth and not something that would break my heart.
“Everything,” he said, standing a little taller. “I think I know why you’re unhappy, why you feel alone. And I want to talk about it. I want to make sure you never feel that way again. I want to do better to understand how you feel at this time.”
For a moment, I wanted to forget the exhibit entirely, to stay and hear every word. My heart pounded, but I forced myself to nod, smoothing a hand over my dress.
“I’ll see you soon,” I murmured before turning and following the other women to the game room.
I tried to blend in with the sophisticated women in the game room, holding my he

A FEW MOMENTS AGO
I scanned the hall, searching for Olivia.
Where was she?
Most of the women had already left the game room, while a few were still trickling out in pairs. But she was nowhere in sight.
I scoffed, shaking my head. She was probably caught up admiring the exhibits and completely forgot about everything else. After all, she had a way of getting lost in shiny things.
A small smile tugged at my lips as I decided to go search for her. But before I could go far, someone stepped into my path, blocking me.
I stopped short, irritation flaring in my chest as I met a familiar face.
“Lydia,” I said flatly, my tone cold. “Excuse me.”
She planted her hands on her shoulders abruptly, tilting her chin up at me. “Dance with me, Christian. I’ve been waiting all night for you to ask. Since you won’t, I’ll do it myself.”
I rolled my eyes and stepped to the side, but she mirrored my movement, still blocking me.
My patience thinned. “Lydia, don’t piss me off.”

OLIVIAHe sat down heavily, his glare burning into both of them before turning it directly onto Christian. “I don’t think you have enough reasons to turn Miss Hale’s offer down.”
Christian exhaled. “I understand you’re the chairman, Grandfather,” he said. “But I’m the president of Blackwood Hotel and Air. I have the full right to make these decisions.” He let the words settle in the heavy silence. “And frankly, having this discussion right now is an insult to my relationship and I won’t tolerate it.”
His gaze slid to Lydia, his jaw clenching. “I won’t accept her investment, and I sure as hell won’t bring her onto my board. Not just because she’s an insufferable, exhausting human being but because she has no place there. Quite frankly,” he added. “She knows nothing about business. So why bother?”
Lydia looked stricken, her mouth hanging open like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
And for once, I could actually savor the silence that followed.
Just then, Ophelia broke the

“I’m glad you could join us, Lydia.”
I looked from Mr. Blackwood to Lydia, who beamed at each other, a slow burn of rage and discomfort working its way up my spine.
When Christian had mentioned this dinner, I didn’t expect Lydia to be attending too.
If I had known, I probably wouldn’t have come because now, all I could think about was leaping across the table and clawing her face off.
Sliding into the seat next to Michael, Lydia flashed me a sly grin. I didn’t bother acknowledging it, my gaze instead drifting to notice something else: Michael’s wife was absent tonight.
I narrowed my eyes slightly.
Was Lydia the reason his wife wasn’t here?
At the far end of the table, Ophelia sat stiffly, shooting daggers at Lydia.
Guess no one really wanted her here except Mr. Blackwood and Michael, judging by their faces.
Christian, on the other hand, sat beside me, completely unbothered, as if no one of any significance shared this table with us.
Letting out a silent breath, I wis

“When’s he getting here?” I glanced at Lydia, who was tapping her foot against the gazebo floor, clearly losing patience.
I let out a small sigh, scratching my brow. “Any minute now.”
She turned away, and for a few moments, silence hung between us.
“So let me get this straight,” I said, eyeing her. “You promised your parents some kind of partnership with my family in exchange for their investment in Blackwood Hotel and Air. More specifically, you promised them some connection to a Blackwood.”
She glanced at me from the corner of her eyes, letting out a sigh. “Did you really think this was just about Olivia? She’s standing in the way of something bigger than she’ll ever know.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Well, I think this started because you couldn’t handle the rejection, especially because of her.” I leaned in slightly. “And in your desperation to get closer to Christian, you made a deal with your parents. I wonder how they’ll react when they find out you’re no closer to gett

After a few more minutes of searching and silently cursing myself, I sighed and pushed my hair out of my face.
“This isn’t going to work. Everything here would look like a crop top on you.”I turned toward him, already dreading my next words. “I guess… we’ll have to ask James.”
He raised an eyebrow, clearly entertained by my discomfort. I ignored him and hurried out of the room.
Luckily, James was just stepping out of his room as I reached the hallway.
Without thinking, I grabbed his arm and yanked him back inside, shutting the door behind us.
“What the hell—?” he started, but I cut him off.
“Can I borrow a shirt? And maybe some shorts?”
He blinked at me, confused for half a second, then smirked. “For Christian?”
I nodded impatiently.
He shrugged and walked over to his closet. After a bit of rummaging, he pulled out a pair of loose black pants and a sky-blue flannel

A loud banging on the door jolted me awake. I shot up from the bed and immediately smacked my head against the headboard.
Wincing, I clutched my forehead. Who on earth was pounding on my door like that?
“Olivia!” my mother’s voice rang out from the hallway. I sighed and slumped back against the headboard. Of course. It was just her.
“Go wash up and come downstairs,” she called. “Both of you. Breakfast’s ready.”
I heard her footsteps fade away down the hall. Yawning, I stretched my arms over my head, trying to shake off the heavy sleep still clinging to me.
Beside me, Christian shifted slightly. I glanced over, expecting him to wake up, but he stayed fast asleep.
For a moment, I just stared at him. His face was so relaxed in sleep, the usual sharpness of his features softened. I couldn’t help myself—I reached out and lightly traced the line of his jaw with my fingertip and a small smile pulled at my lips. How could he be this handsome?
I like you, Olivia.
The words echoe

CHRISTIANIt was the quickest fucking quickie ever, because even though she said it was safe, I wasn’t about to take chances.
“That was fast,” she murmured against my skin, her voice sleepy and satisfied.
A corner of my lip tilted up in a smirk. “For saying that, I’m going to fuck you for hours after the baby’s out.”
As she stared up at me, I realized what I’d just said, and the cheery mood evaporated like smoke.
I sighed, shaking my head. “You’re about to say the contract ends once the baby’s out, right?”
She shook her head, her big green eyes staring up at me — the same eyes that did something crazy to my heart, making me feel things I used to believe I couldn’t feel.
“Why didn’t you…” she whispered, her voice soft, “Why did you turn Lydia away?”
I chuckled under my breath. “Is that what you’re thinking about right now?”
Her brows pinched together slightly and her lips twisted shyly. “It’s not like you.” She revealed. “I know you always made time for her whenever she showed

    CHRISTIAN
What am I doing? That’s a fair question.
Because if someone had told me months ago that I would find myself in this position—kneeling before Olivia, my only focus on her pleasure, and my own desires secondary, I would have called them crazy. And yet, here I was, overwhelmed by the need to make her squirm, to hear her breath hitch, to watch her lose herself under my touch and consumed by a hunger I couldn’t control.
Oh, how I’d missed the sight of her writhing beneath me.
It takes a real man to admit when a woman has completely shifted his world and I was that man.
So yes, I knew what I was doing, and the end result? It would most likely be her release all over my face. Soon.
Slowly, I trailed kisses up her thighs, nearing the place where she pulsed with need and she trembled.
“Relax,” I whispered against her skin, and somehow, that made her quiver even more.
A groan rumbled in my chest as my eyes caught the sight of her…soft, wet, and waiting for me. I could lose

It was just a simple misunderstanding. And yet it had wrecked me for weeks.
I’d cried, sulked, pushed him away, all because of something that was never even real.
My eyes stung with embarrassment. I tightened my fingers in my dress and turned away, unable to look at him, memories of every stupid argument flashing through my mind.
I remembered all the times he said there was nothing between him and Lydia.
And all the times I hadn’t believed him.
I thought about that night in the car, the way I’d thrown words at him like knives. I thought about how he had just sat there and taken it.
I must have looked like a fool and sounded even worse. I swallowed hard and dropped my head, squeezing my eyes shut, and wishing I could erase everything.
Then suddenly, I felt his hand on my shoulder, wrapping me with warmth.
I opened my eyes, blinking back tears, just as he pulled me into a hug from behind.
The second my back hit his chest, everything broke loose.
I started sobbing — ug

OLIVIA For weeks, I’d waited for him to explain their relationship, to show that she didn’t matter, but I never got that. I couldn’t keep waiting for his words to match his actions. “What about her?” He didn’t answer right away, but his gaze didn’t waver either. His eyes searched mine, like he was waiting for me to say more. When I didn’t, he exhaled.
“I didn’t fuck her, Olivia.” He took a slow step forward, like he wanted to make sure I understood every word. “Or whatever you think happened.”
I shook my head, still not convinced. “Then just tell me the truth.”
His eyes softened for a second. “Tell me why you think I’m lying. And say something more than me dancing with her at the ball.”
Dancing with her at the ball? Was that all he thought this was about?
I lifted my chin. “When I went to shop for a dress… Lydia told me you…” I paused, trying to steady myself. “She said you made her leave your bed that morning. I don’t think that means nothing.”
He raised an eyebrow, a
