Chapter 13 Kevin I looked at my watch for probably the tenth time. 12:15pm. She still hadn’t arrived and lunch was at 1pm. I was parked in front of the local shopping mall, sitting in my car, waiting for Janet to show up. She had insisted I wait for her there. I was tense and restless. I hated waiting around and I wondered if she was still coming. Or had she changed her mind? If so then I was sunk. I tried her number again it rang unanswered. Nearly 12:20pm. She wasn’t going to come. This was her attempt to make a fool of me and I was mad at her for it, but more with myself. If I hadn’t told that stupid lie none of this would be happening. I wondered what had possessed me to tell my Dad we were engaged. Now I was trapped in my own lie. 12:30pm. It was clear she wasn’t going to show up and I’ll be damned if I wait a minute longer. As I started the engine my phone rang. It was her. “Where the hell are you? I complained. “Keep your voice down,” She snapped. “I’m in
Chapter 14 Anna The party was in full swing, the food and booze were flowing. I had been planning this for months. I’d had my eye on Tony from the first day we were introduced. He was good-looking, and I burned with jealousy whenever I saw him and Janet together. Then one afternoon, six months ago, he had come over to our house to see Janet who had a flu and she asked me to drive him home. That was the opportunity to make my move and to my surprise, he had responded to my flirting. We had spent the afternoon having sex and it continued for months after. Now he was mine and we would soon be married and have our own family. Yes I had hurt my sister, but hey, all was fair in love and war I looked around and spotted him talking to a couple of his pals. “Great party,” Ella a friend of mine said walking up to me. “Thanks.” I said briefly. I knew Ella enough to know she was going to start asking me annoying questions. “Where is your sister?” She asked. “She couldn’t make it.”
Chapter 15 Janet What the fuck? I couldn’t believe the nightmare, or rather day-mare, I had walked into. I had agreed to this lunch because I hadn’t wanted to be around for Anna’s stupidity party, and Kevin had said it would only be his mom and dad. Now I was confronted with nearly a dozen people. I fixed a smile on my face as I was introduced, and had to stop myself from screaming as I answered their difficult questions. Then his aunt said, “I can’t wait to have you as a member of our family Janet. I shall plan the wedding myself.” Wedding! I glanced at Kevin who was grinning stupidly. Angry, I put my hand under the table and dug my nails into his thigh. He winced and tried to remove my hand, I resisted. “When are you guys planning a party to celebrate your engagement?” An uncle asked. “We haven’t picked a date yet.” I said quickly.“ We are not in any hurry.” “The sooner the better.” His aunt said. “ I can’t wait for my favorite nephew to be married.” Kevin manager to
Chapter 16Kevin“I said I’m sorry?” I yelled. She ignored me.I watched her hail a cab and get in.For fuck sake! Why did she give me a hard time? I thought. I immediately tried to call her. It rang unanswered. My next try I found she’d blocked my number. The hell with it! I drove home, furious with her. She had walked out on me. Who the fuck does she think she is? But I had to admit, I really did enjoy the time I had spent with her and my family. She was the first girl I had taken home to mom. Which wasn’t surprising. Most of the girls I had hooked up with would have given my mom a heart attack if I had brought them home. The afternoon would have gone as planned if mom hadn’t invited so many relatives, especially her sister, Aunt Viv, who could keep a secret for less than ten seconds. Now Janet and I were being invited to this fundraiser but from the way we’d ended things just now, I knew there was no way she would go with me.What the hell am I going to do now? I tho
Chapter 17Janet“Miss Janet!” Fran frowned at my language.“Sorry. But this isn’t true. I am not engaged to anyone.”“Then how do you explain this?”She pointed to the picture that went with the article. It showed Kevin and I getting into his car a smile on our faces. One of his family members had obviously taken the picture and posted it on social media now the press had gotten wind of it. So much for Kevin’s bright idea. I stared at the picture. Looking at it, I almost believed we were engaged. We looked like a real couple. “I’ve heard a lot of things about this guy and they aren’t good. He has a bad reputation with women. You are already recovering from a heartbreak, engaging a man with his reputation would be a disaster. Please don’t do it just to spite your sister.”I gasped. “ Fran! How can you say so? You know me better than that. Believe me I’m not dating Kevin. I don’t even know him.”“But the picture was taken this afternoon, that’s the dress you were wearing
Chapter 18Janet“What the hell are you doing here.” I asked him.“I am here to see you.”“Well I don’t want to see you, and stalking is against the law.”“You didn’t give me a choice since you’ve blocked my number.” He shot back.“Yeah, because I don’t want to talk to you. Now leave.”“Not until you hear me out.”I ignored him and made to open my car door. His held my arm.I shuddered at the feeling of excitement I felt at his touch. He was standing so close I could smell his strong, muscular cologne. My heart was racing.“Please listen to me.” He pleaded, unaware of the effect he was having on me.“Let me go or I will charge you with assault.” I declared. He let me go.“I’m not here to fight. I just want to talk. I have a business proposal. Please hear me out.” He begged.“Business?” I asked startled, my eyes went to the folder he was holding.“Yes business. Please give me thirty minutes of your time. If you don’t like the proposal, I’ll go and not come back.”I didn’t
Chapter 19Janet“Are you really sure you want to do this?” Gina asked me.It was Wednesday evening and she was giving me a lift home. My car had broken down that morning and was at the mechanic. I had just finished telling her I had agreed to date Kevin.“Yeah I am.” I replied.“You are sure you’ve thought about it carefully? And you really want to date him?”I hesitated. Have I really accepted to date Kevin? I thought. I still couldn’t believe I had. Well it was business. There was no way I was ever going to fall in love with, let alone marry him.Gina looked at me frowning slightly.“Sure I have thought about it. I took time before I made the decision.” I lied. She turned her eyes back on the road.“I don’t like this Jan.” She said.“Why? I thought you were the one saying I should give him a chance, what has changed?”“You have changed.” She replied. “You were clear headed before but now your thinking seems clouded by revenge.”“What?” I was shocked. “What do you mean?
Chapter 20 Janet The party was in full swing when we arrived at the Glamour Hotel, where it was being held. As expected the press were out in full force, which wasn’t a surprise considering the number of well known business men and women, politicians, and even local celebrities, that would be attending. “Bet they are hoping for a juicy story.” Kevin said as he cut the engine. “ Why don’t we give them something to talk about?” I raised my eyebrows. “Like?” “Walking arm in arm into the hotel.” A valet hurried towards us. “Let’s do it.” I said. We got out of the car and holding hands, walked towards the hotel, nearly blinded by flashing cameras. I was use to it though. I had gone to a lot of such occasions, mostly with my dad. Actually only with my dad. For some reason, Tony and I had never gone to such an event. He always had an excuse not to go, but now he was going with my sister. I was thinking about it and feeling a little sad when without warning, Kevin pulled me to
