Elena

The way he looks at me… I’ve never seen such raw pain in his eyes. “You’re taking me home?”

Alec nods and holds the door open for me. He leans in when I sit down, as though he’s about to buckle me in the way he always does, but then he pulls away. He swallows hard and takes a step back before closing the door.

He’s silent as he steps into the car and leans back in his seat, covering his face with his arm, inhaling deeply.

“Hey, are you okay?” I ask, suddenly worried.

He pulls his arm away and nods at me, a bittersweet smile on his face. “Yes, of course.”Alec raises his hand to my face and brushes my hair aside gently. “Thank you for tonight, Elena, even though I didn’t give you much of a choice. When it comes to me, you’ve never had much of a choice—you didn’t even have a choice when you married me. I’ll respect your choices this time, Elena. I’ll do as you asked. I’ll let you go.”

Fear grips me at his words. “Why? Why so suddenly?”

I was convinced he was only going after me bec

AlexanderElena walks into the kitchen and looks at me with raised brows when she sees me standing behind the stove.“What are you doing?” she asks, her tone careful and curious.I laugh at her expression, but I can’t even blame her. On one of our dates we tried baking a pie together, and I almost burned down our entire kitchen. She’s right to be cautious.“Don’t worry,” I tell her. “I got instructions from Grandpa. You go get ready for dinner.”She glances at me suspiciously and looks back at me as she walks away to get ready for tonight’s date.Fifty-six dates. Elena and I have gone on fifty-six dates since we got back together exactly a year ago, and I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of her.It took me four months to convince her to move back in with me, and in those four months, every single time that I had to take her home after a date was pure torture.I’m excited as I set the table. I’ve managed to transform our terrace into a floral sanctuary. It’s filled with white peonies,

Elena“You look beautiful, honey,” Mom says, tears in her eyes. She touches my veil, straightening it for the third time. I grab her shoulders and smile at her, my heart overflowing with happiness.“So do you, Mom,” I tell her honestly. She looks amazing. It took her almost two years, but she’s walking without a cane now, and she radiates happiness. I was terrified that she’d feel like there was nothing left for her to live for, considering what she woke up to, but that hasn’t been the case at all. She’s thriving, and it’s been amazing to see her rebuild her life.“Are you ready?” she asks.I nod at her, my smile so wide that it hurts my face. “More than ever.”This time, Alec and I tried to do things right. We decided to go with a far more low-key wedding than we initially planned. We’re now having a small outdoors ceremony, with only our loved ones present. No press, no big spectacle, just us.Alec and I chose to remain engaged for a year, so I could plan our entire wedding and invo

Epilogue ElenaMy heart squeezes painfully as I stare at my brother on the stand, the judge passing a life sentence, his punishment the same as Jade’s and my father’s.Their trial took almost four whole years, and they nearly got away with what they did—until Alec revealed the last judge’s corruption, and a new judge was assigned, putting us back at square one. My mother’s case was practically unheard of, and that delayed their judgment even longer than I would’ve liked, but it didn’t prevent it.I glance at my husband, my heart overflowing with gratitude. Without him, my family would have gone unpunished. My mother would have died. And I? I’d have lost my reason to live.He looks at me as though he can read my mind and wraps his arm around my shoulder, offering me silent support. She takes my arm and leads me up wide stone steps toward an imposing front door at least as tall as two men and just as wide. As she pushes it open, I almost reach forward to help her. It looks heavy. She waves me inside and then leads me down a wide hallway. Artwork dots the walls, including classical paintings, landscapes, and nature scenes, with the occasional battle scene.“Mr. Moretti is in his study,” she tells me, looking over her shoulder with a coy smile. “He isveryexcited to see you. He’s told us all about you, Miss Esposito.”“Please, call me Elena,” I say.Esposito is the fake name I’ll have to use while going through this charade. My heart beats a little faster when Clara stops outside another imposing door.“I’m sure you’d like me to leave you two lovebirds alone,” she says.“Uh, sure,” I mutter. “Yeah, that’d be great. Thanks.”My head is spinning. I need to get my actor’s brain to work correctly. I’m supposed to be from this world, a wealthy princess worthy of the mob

DARIOI chose Elena because she has no extended family, and hell, I don’t know. I didn’t overthink it. I saw her, and I picked her, and that’s that, goddamn it. Father’s been bothering me for a long time to get married, quiet the tongues wagging that I hadn’t settled down yet, and I needed to get him off my back finally. Sitting at the table, I feel something stir inside as I look across at her. She’s wearing a silver dress that subtly hugs her figure. She’s curvy in the extreme, her shape rising and falling in a way that triggers something deep and hungry in me. I’m not used to physical attraction like this. Even with family at the table, something moves me as I look across at her.“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Mother says in her usual detached way.“Yes,” Father says in the same manner. He looks at me, not at Elena, as he speaks. “A pleasure.”I give him a blank stare in return. He’s clearly trying to make some point, perhaps pissed I haven’t taken a woman from aFamily which might

“That seems random, Mother,” I mutter, wondering if she’s trying to trip Elena up already. She rolls her eyes at me. “We have to startsomewhere, don’t we?”Elena’s cheeks flush, her lips parting slightly. It’s clear she’s never heard of the classic Italian film, which is surprising considering she’s an actress. Then again, maybe her tastes are more recent than nineteen-sixty.“I think they’re way better than Dolce & Gabbana,” she says.I force out a laugh, pretending it’s a joke. Elena might not be as prepared as I’d like, but she’s quick to react and follow my lead, laughing with me. “I told you she was funny, Mother,” I say.“Hmm,” Mother says, with that searching expression on her face.I usually feel stifled at these sorts of dinners, with both of my parents watching me for any sign of boredom or impatience with Family customs. This evening is even worse. For a few moments, when walking down the hallway with Elena, it was like I wasn’t part of the Family at all. It felt, for the b

After they’re gone, I return to the dining room to find Elena sitting with her head in her hands. I pause in the doorway. She doesn’t realize I’m back.“Stupid, stupid,” she mutters.I clear my throat, taking a step forward.“That wasn’t good, was it?” she says while looking up at me, her hair tousled around her shoulders. The strange urge to run my hand through it strikes me.I should tell her the truth:No, that was terrible. They’re suspicious already. However, something about the panic on her face stops me.“They’re always like that,” I tell her.“Was I supposed to memorize every obscure fancy-pants reference?”I chuckle. It feels good, but then I kill it. It seems wrong to squelch such a slight reaction, but it’s necessary.“What’s so funny?” she snaps.“I don’t think anyone in this house has ever used the termfancy pantsbefore.”“Well, that’s what you all are,” she shrugs. “Sorry.”“Something tells me you only said that because I’m paying you.”“Isn’t that what this whole thing i

“So we’re still playing a game?” she whimpers.“Unless you’re the best actor in the world, there’s no way you’ve made yourself so gorgeously wet for me.”As I push my finger inside of her, she lets my hands go, pressing her face against my chest as if she doesn’t want me watching her when she gives in to the pleasure. I haven’t touched a drop of booze tonight, but it’s like I’m drunk on her.I slide my finger deep, swirling it in circles, her walls squeezing and pulsing around my hand while I grind my palm against her engorged clit. The combination makes her moan loudly into my chest, almost screaming as the pleasure causes her body to twitch.“Grab my cock,” I growl. “Feel how hard you’re making me.”Her hand slides shyly up my leg. She gasps when she wraps her hand around my dick through the fabric of my trousers. Precome leaks hotly out of my tip, and I know, at least for one crystal clear moment, that there’s something real here. I’ve never lost control like this.I can track how

DARIOI’m relieved when Father announces he wants to leave early, affording every Moretti the chance to exit if he wishes. The dinner was filled with awkward conversations about opera, books, and other things I don’t care about. It’s not that I’ve got anything against it. I’m sick of everybody trying to seem clever.I offer Elena my arm as we get ready to leave. When she takes it, I remind myself for the millionth time that I have to be cold, but there’s too much warmth sparking between us. It’s like she’s waking something long forgotten inside me.“Can I use the ladies’ room before we go?” she asks.I think about the Romanos, the threats, the vandalism. What if something happens to her in there? She smiles at me as she places her hand on my chest—all part of the act. “Don’t worry. I’d never dream of running from my dear, devoted lover.”I grab her hips; I’m conscious people are watching us while pretending not to be. To sell this game, I’ve got to be convincing. “Don’t worry. I’ll be a quiet and obedient employee.”“Why are you acting like you’d be anything else?” he grunts.I hide my hurt. I hope so, at least. It shouldn’t exist. Even if he’s being a jackass, he’s got a point. I knew what I was signing up for, but that was before the kiss. That was before he gave me hope for … for what? That his family would accept me? That Aunt Rosa would welcome him? That his life isn’t too dangerous for me? That this all isn’t just an act?In my head, I hear Giulia.Make it your mantra.“You’re right. This is just business.”He flinches as if he has any right to, as if he’s being anything other than jerkish. “Exactly.”The driver opens the limo door. Dario steps out and then offers me his hand. It might be petty, but I don’t take it. I hold my hand near his and instead climb out myself. His eyes gleam as though he might smile, but he doesn’t.Leading me into the party, I’m stunned by how extravagant it is. A band plays from a big stage at the front. Server

ELENA“How do I look?” I ask Dario, unable to hide the smile on my face. When the hair and makeup crew—yep, crew—were doing their work on me, I tried to stay detached and above the whole thing. I tried telling myself I felt like a pig dressed for the market. Yet the more they worked, the more I could see myself as beautiful. That’s rare for me.Now, I stand in front of Dario in a stylish, form-fitting dress. They’ve made my cheeks even more flushed than they usually are. My hair is up in an intricate style with pins.Dario stands on the other side of my bedroom in a tuxedo, his freshly shaven jaw tight as he stares at me. “Good,” he says.I try not to show any disappointment. He’s gone from fiery hot to icy cold all over again. I’m not sure what I expected, butgoodfeels majorly underwhelming. I nod, keeping it all business. “Good enough for the party?”“You’ll fit in,” he says, offering his arm. “Shall we? The car’s waiting.”When I take his arm, I’m sure I can sense something in him.

I punch the man in the gut as if trying to prove to myself I’m still the cold bastard I need to be. He gasps and coughs up blood. I hit him again, reminding myself I’m not a good man. In this life, nobody can be good.“Please,” he gasps. “No more …”“Thenspeak,” I growl, reaching into my holster and taking out my gun. I press the barrel against his forehead. “Or would you prefer I make it quick?”The man whimpers. Then, slowly, he speaks. “I don’t know what he’s going to do next?—”“So it was Vincenzo?”He nods, looking defeated. “I don’t know what he’s got planned, but …”“Don’t keep me in suspense.”“We’ve got a new bar, a new hideout. I can give you the address. Okay, man? That’s all I know. I swear.”I stand up but keep the gun pressed against him the entire time. “You know, ending your miserable life here would be far easier. It’d be safer for everybody involved.”His eyes water as he stares up at me. “Please, Mr. Moretti. I’m getting married. We’ll disappear, me and my fiancée.

DARIOI sit in the shadows in the storage room of the bar. Beneath a naked lightbulb, a Romano soldier is tied to a chair, blood running from his nose and leaking from his scalp, dripping down his cheeks like tears. In my mind, I wonder what Elena would say if she could see me now. I know she’d hate it. I know she’d be disgusted. No civilian is ever prepared for what mafiosi life is really like.“Are you trying to tell us that the vandalism of the charity is completely unrelated to my meeting with your boss?” I ask.The man shudders, his lips trembling. “I don’t know nothing.”I sigh, gesturing at Allessio. He slaps the man across the face so hard that the chair falls to the floor. Paolo quickly rights it, and then Allessio hits him again.“Nobody is getting any enjoyment out of this. You’re well known to us as a lead soldier in this area. You’re wasting our time by keeping your mouth shut. It’s just going to cause you more pain.”Again, I feel Elena watching me in the back of my head

“Bad things,” he grunts. “What I have to, but I didn’t come here to discuss this. We have a charity gala this evening. Get yourself ready.” “What do I need to do?” “Nothing. Someone will handle your outfit, makeup, and hair, but you should prepare mentally. Some of these people are even more judgmental than my parents.” I force a smile onto my face. “Is that even possible?” He grabs my shoulders. Not hard, but with enough intensity to send more confusing sensations through my body. “Careful. Even if they live with sticks up their asses, they’re still my parents. I wouldn’t make comments about your parents.” “My parents died in a fire,” I whisper. “Good. You’re sticking to your role.” “No.” Why am I even telling him this? “That wasn’t part of my role. It was the truth. I just incorporated it. My parents and my little brother died when I was a kid. That’s why Aunt Rosa took me in. That’s why I can’t lose her.” His touch tightens on me. My skin blazes under his palms. “It’s true?

Yet it doesn’t matter how Itruthfullyfeel. “I love your son more than life itself.”“Marriage isn’t merely about love, however. I’m sure you’re aware of that.”“I’m ready to dedicate myself to him. I’m ready to do whatever it takes.”“Whatever it takes,” she repeats. “How lovely.”Yet her tone says the exact opposite. I slipped there, making it sound like I was doing this out of duty, not love, as I just proclaimed. I wonder what would have happened if Dario and I had met under different circumstances. Would sassing him still feel so good?“Oh, would you look at the time,” she says, gesturing at the grandfather clock. “Excuse me, but I must leave early.”I wait for her to stand, and then we do the posh fake-kissing thing again. ELENAThe following day, I wake with a surreal feeling, waiting for the springy mattress to dig into my side like every day. It’s become a routine, waking to a painful reminder of our poverty. Then, I sink deeper into the thick, luxurious bed. The silk sheets caress my skin. For long moments, I let myself savor it. Then, my conscious mind kicks in, and I remember what this is all about.Yesterday, after the standoff with Aunt Rosa, Dario was distant during the car ride home. We barely exchanged any words at all except small talk. Back at the apartment, it was like I could feel a tension in the atmosphere between us, the potential for something significant. Somethingspecial, even. Not that it matters; it’s not what I’m here for. I need to be careful with that sort of thinking.Clara knocks on my door. “Excuse me, Miss. Mrs. Moretti would like to speak with you.”I sit up, rubbing sleep from my eyes. “When will she get here?”“She’s already here.”I quickly shower in the en suite, tryin
