Elena

My hands are trembling as I hold my phone up, a photo of Alexander and Jennifer staring back at me. She’s smiling at him, and he’s looking at her; the two of them standing in the jewelry store he took me to pick our rings. Based on the suit he’s wearing in the photo, this must have been just a few days ago.

Has he been seeing her all along? I can’t make sense of this. The way he reacted when I broke that photo frame made me think that maybe, just maybe, he was actually moving on from her. But the way he looks at her in this photo… it’s the same way he’s always looked at her.

I don’t understand why he’s even with her at all. Why wouldn’t he have told me about it? He’s been acting so possessive lately that I was under the impression that I’m the only woman in his life. Was I wrong? Was his behavior really just him projecting his own unfaithfulness?

“What’s wrong?” Lucian asks, startling me.

I lock my phone and look up at him, shaking my head. He’s been so incredibly depressed afte

AlexanderOur bedroom door closes behind me and Elena turns to look at me, her arms crossed in a defensive position.“Are you okay?” I ask, concerned about everything the PI just told us. “I promise, Buttercup, we’ll get to the bottom of this.”Elena smiles, but her smile is forced. “Yes, I hope so. Thank you for providing me with the resources I need. If not for you, if not for this marriage, I’d still be living in ignorance.”She’s overly polite, her tone clipped. The way she looks at me unsettles me.“You saw the photos.”She grits her teeth and nods. “Explain yourself, Alexander,” she snaps, her voice raised. She looks furious, but goddamn it, she looks beautiful. She’d murder me if I told her just how stunning I find her right now. I can just imagine the fire in her eyes if I dared tell her how hot she looks. I suppress a smile, but I clearly don’t do a well enough job, because Elena’s anger rises.“Do you think this is funny? Did you have fun making a fool of me? You keep talkin

AlexanderI’m oddly impatient as I wait for Elena by the entrance of the restaurant. I told her I’d take her to the opening of our latest restaurant, and she told me she’d meet me here. I smile to myself when my limousine pulls up to the curb. I walk up to the passenger door and open it, my breath catching when I see her. She’s wearing a stunning black dress that hugs her figure beautifully, but it’s her eyes that get to me. It’s the way she looks at me like she and I are the only ones that are in on a secret.“You look beautiful,” I tell her as I help her out of the car. Elena smiles at me, and my heart skips a damn beat.“You don’t look so bad yourself,” she says, her eyes roaming over my body. “Though I think you’ll look even better on top of me tonight.”My eyes widen in shock and Elena smirks in satisfaction. She’s getting more and more brazen with the things she says to me lately. She loves provoking me, shocking me. I grin at her and pull her closer, kissing her right in front

Elena“Are you ready?” Sofia says.I nod at her and stare at myself in the mirror. The long pale pink gown I’m wearing is absolutely stunning, and it’s probably the most beautiful thing I’ve ever worn.I’ve gotten quite used to Sofia asking me to accompany her for charity events and lunches, but tonight is the first night she’s taking me to a gala. I kind of wish Alec didn’t have to work late tonight, so we could go together. I know he’ll likely end up making an appearance, since this event is hosted by the Kennedys, but it isn’t the same as arriving there on his arm.“Let’s go,” Sofia says, taking my hand.I follow her down, where the limousine is waiting for us. I’m oddly nervous. It’s been so long since I’ve been at an event this big. There’ll be so many people I know, people I haven’t spoken to in years, people that won’t know anything about me, except for the rumors Elise has been spreading, and whatever they may have heard about me in the press lately.I’m trembling by the time

AlexanderElena can’t stop staring at her engagement ring, and I can’t stop staring at her. The wind rustles her hair beautifully, and I’m glad we opted to have dinner on our terrace today. I can’t remember any woman ever cooking for me—it’s always a chef. Yet Elena, a woman that grew up in the same environment I did, cooks for me all the time. She takes the time to find out what my favorite dishes are and buys exotic ingredients to surprise me with. I’m not used to being taken care of this way.“It’s stunning,” she says, her eyes twinkling. “I wish I could show my mom.”Elena never ceases to amaze me. She refuses to give up on her mother, no matter how slim the odds are.“Do you think she’d like it?” I ask.Elena nods. “Yeah, it’s simple but so luxurious at the same time. Mom would definitely love this.”I smile at her. She lights up when she speaks of her mother, of her memories with her. “Tell me about your happiest childhood memory,” I say, my voice soft.Elena looks at me and tak

ElenaAlec and I wake up to incessant knocking, and before we realize someone’s at the door, Lucian and Sofia walk in. Alec sits up, startled, the sheets falling to his waist. He nudges me gently and wraps me in the blankets as I sit up, covering as much of myself as I can.“I’m sorry, my darlings,” Sofia says. “We wouldn’t have walked in, but we had no other choice. Neither one of you picked up the phone, and you were so fast asleep the knocking didn’t wake you either.”“What is it, Mother?” Alec asks, his arm wrapped around me.“Elena… it’s your mother,” she says carefully. My heart drops and Alec tightens his grip on me, both of us bracing for the worst.“I—the doctor asked us to come to the hospital. He was unclear about what’s wrong. He didn’t say. We need to go.”I nod and move to get out of bed mindlessly, but Alec grabs me and wraps me in his arms, sheets and all.“Clothes, Buttercup?”I nod and glance at Lucian, panic rendering me useless. ElenaI’m restless in the morning, eager to see my mother. Lucian, Sofia, and Alec all look as tired as I do, as though none of us managed to get any sleep.“Mom is going to want to see Dad, isn’t she? How do I explain he isn’t here?”It would devastate her to find out he not only left her, but that he has married someone else already. “Oh God, how do I explain to her that I can’t even take her home?”My heart races, devastation and helplessness constricting my breathing. Alec walks up to me and cups my cheeks, keeping my eyes on his.“Baby, breathe,” he says. “You’re fine. She’s awake now, and that’s all that matters. The rest we can deal with, one step at a time.”Lucian rubs my back gently, his expression as torn as Alec’s. None of us know what the right thing to do is.“She needs to be informed,” Sofia says. “But not now, honey.”I nod at her, my heart aching for my mother. Do you want them to disappear? Tell me what you want, and we’ll find a way to make it happen.”I nod, trying my best to decide what needs to be done, to set aside the love I’ve held onto for so long—love neither my brother nor my father deserves.“I need to know if my father was involved. I want Jade and Matthew to go down. I want them, the way they’ve made me feel—helpless, cut off from everything and everyone they’ve ever known. I want their assets, every single thing they own, every single thing they care about. I want it all. But above all, I want everything my mother has ever worked for. When she was declared brain dead, my father inherited her entire estate. I want that rectified.”Alec starts to pace like I am, restless. “We need to attack them

AlexanderI push Sarah’s wheelchair through the garden, stopping to admire different flowers. She loves the feeling of the sun on her face and the fresh air. I can’t blame her, she’s been cooped up in a room for years. We’ve converted one of the guest rooms on the ground floor into a fully equipped medical room for her, so at least we can keep her at home now. We got her an electric wheelchair too, and she’s enjoying being able to move around the house a little. It took almost two months before we could take her home from our private clinic, and even now she requires round-the-clock care. She’s had to learn how to breathe by herself again, how to speak again, and even how to eat. Watching Elena’s heart break every time her mother struggles to relearn something is tearing me apart.“I heard her, you know,” Sarah says, and I pause. She still struggles to move her limbs. In a way, she’s like a baby. Her body is mostly fine now, but she needs to relearn how to do basic tasks and how to ge

“So we’re still playing a game?” she whimpers.“Unless you’re the best actor in the world, there’s no way you’ve made yourself so gorgeously wet for me.”As I push my finger inside of her, she lets my hands go, pressing her face against my chest as if she doesn’t want me watching her when she gives in to the pleasure. I haven’t touched a drop of booze tonight, but it’s like I’m drunk on her.I slide my finger deep, swirling it in circles, her walls squeezing and pulsing around my hand while I grind my palm against her engorged clit. The combination makes her moan loudly into my chest, almost screaming as the pleasure causes her body to twitch.“Grab my cock,” I growl. “Feel how hard you’re making me.”Her hand slides shyly up my leg. She gasps when she wraps her hand around my dick through the fabric of my trousers. Precome leaks hotly out of my tip, and I know, at least for one crystal clear moment, that there’s something real here. I’ve never lost control like this.I can track how

The dinner was filled with awkward conversations about opera, books, and other things I don’t care about. It’s not that I’ve got anything against it. I’m sick of everybody trying to seem clever.I offer Elena my arm as we get ready to leave. When she takes it, I remind myself for the millionth time that I have to be cold, but there’s too much warmth sparking between us. It’s like she’s waking something long forgotten inside me.“Can I use the ladies’ room before we go?” she asks.I think about the Romanos, the threats, the vandalism. What if something happens to her in there? She smiles at me as she places her hand on my chest—all part of the act. “Don’t worry. I’d never dream of running from my dear, devoted lover.”I grab her hips; I’m conscious people are watching us while pretending not to be. To sell this game, I’ve got to be convincing. “Don’t worry. I’ll be a quiet and obedient employee.”“Why are you acting like you’d be anything else?” he grunts.I hide my hurt. I hope so, at least. It shouldn’t exist. Even if he’s being a jackass, he’s got a point. I knew what I was signing up for, but that was before the kiss. That was before he gave me hope for … for what? That his family would accept me? That Aunt Rosa would welcome him? That his life isn’t too dangerous for me? That this all isn’t just an act?In my head, I hear Giulia.Make it your mantra.“You’re right. This is just business.”He flinches as if he has any right to, as if he’s being anything other than jerkish. “Exactly.”The driver opens the limo door. Dario steps out and then offers me his hand. It might be petty, but I don’t take it. I hold my hand near his and instead climb out myself. His eyes gleam as though he might smile, but he doesn’t.Leading me into the party, I’m stunned by how extravagant it is. A band plays from a big stage at the front. Server

ELENA“How do I look?” I ask Dario, unable to hide the smile on my face. When the hair and makeup crew—yep, crew—were doing their work on me, I tried to stay detached and above the whole thing. I tried telling myself I felt like a pig dressed for the market. Yet the more they worked, the more I could see myself as beautiful. That’s rare for me.Now, I stand in front of Dario in a stylish, form-fitting dress. They’ve made my cheeks even more flushed than they usually are. My hair is up in an intricate style with pins.Dario stands on the other side of my bedroom in a tuxedo, his freshly shaven jaw tight as he stares at me. “Good,” he says.I try not to show any disappointment. He’s gone from fiery hot to icy cold all over again. I’m not sure what I expected, butgoodfeels majorly underwhelming. I nod, keeping it all business. “Good enough for the party?”“You’ll fit in,” he says, offering his arm. “Shall we? The car’s waiting.”When I take his arm, I’m sure I can sense something in him.

I punch the man in the gut as if trying to prove to myself I’m still the cold bastard I need to be. He gasps and coughs up blood. I hit him again, reminding myself I’m not a good man. In this life, nobody can be good.“Please,” he gasps. “No more …”“Thenspeak,” I growl, reaching into my holster and taking out my gun. I press the barrel against his forehead. “Or would you prefer I make it quick?”The man whimpers. Then, slowly, he speaks. “I don’t know what he’s going to do next?—”“So it was Vincenzo?”He nods, looking defeated. “I don’t know what he’s got planned, but …”“Don’t keep me in suspense.”“We’ve got a new bar, a new hideout. I can give you the address. Okay, man? That’s all I know. I swear.”I stand up but keep the gun pressed against him the entire time. “You know, ending your miserable life here would be far easier. It’d be safer for everybody involved.”His eyes water as he stares up at me. “Please, Mr. Moretti. I’m getting married. We’ll disappear, me and my fiancée.

DARIOI sit in the shadows in the storage room of the bar. Beneath a naked lightbulb, a Romano soldier is tied to a chair, blood running from his nose and leaking from his scalp, dripping down his cheeks like tears. In my mind, I wonder what Elena would say if she could see me now. I know she’d hate it. I know she’d be disgusted. No civilian is ever prepared for what mafiosi life is really like.“Are you trying to tell us that the vandalism of the charity is completely unrelated to my meeting with your boss?” I ask.The man shudders, his lips trembling. “I don’t know nothing.”I sigh, gesturing at Allessio. He slaps the man across the face so hard that the chair falls to the floor. Paolo quickly rights it, and then Allessio hits him again.“Nobody is getting any enjoyment out of this. You’re well known to us as a lead soldier in this area. You’re wasting our time by keeping your mouth shut. It’s just going to cause you more pain.”Again, I feel Elena watching me in the back of my head

“Bad things,” he grunts. “What I have to, but I didn’t come here to discuss this. We have a charity gala this evening. Get yourself ready.” “What do I need to do?” “Nothing. Someone will handle your outfit, makeup, and hair, but you should prepare mentally. Some of these people are even more judgmental than my parents.” I force a smile onto my face. “Is that even possible?” He grabs my shoulders. Not hard, but with enough intensity to send more confusing sensations through my body. “Careful. Even if they live with sticks up their asses, they’re still my parents. I wouldn’t make comments about your parents.” “My parents died in a fire,” I whisper. “Good. You’re sticking to your role.” “No.” Why am I even telling him this? “That wasn’t part of my role. It was the truth. I just incorporated it. My parents and my little brother died when I was a kid. That’s why Aunt Rosa took me in. That’s why I can’t lose her.” His touch tightens on me. My skin blazes under his palms. “It’s true?

I’m ready to do whatever it takes.”“Whatever it takes,” she repeats. “How lovely.”Yet her tone says the exact opposite. I slipped there, making it sound like I was doing this out of duty, not love, as I just proclaimed. I wonder what would have happened if Dario and I had met under different circumstances. Would sassing him still feel so good?“Oh, would you look at the time,” she says, gesturing at the grandfather clock. “Excuse me, but I must leave early.”I wait for her to stand, and then we do the posh fake-kissing thing again. ELENAThe following day, I wake with a surreal feeling, waiting for the springy mattress to dig into my side like every day. It’s become a routine, waking to a painful reminder of our poverty. Then, I sink deeper into the thick, luxurious bed. The silk sheets caress my skin. For long moments, I let myself savor it. Then, my conscious mind kicks in, and I remember what this is all about.Yesterday, after the standoff with Aunt Rosa, Dario was distant during the car ride home. We barely exchanged any words at all except small talk. Back at the apartment, it was like I could feel a tension in the atmosphere between us, the potential for something significant. Somethingspecial, even. Not that it matters; it’s not what I’m here for. I need to be careful with that sort of thinking.Clara knocks on my door. “Excuse me, Miss. Mrs. Moretti would like to speak with you.”I sit up, rubbing sleep from my eyes. “When will she get here?”“She’s already here.”I quickly shower in the en suite, tryin
