The lie that saved her from another brutal beating

Eve's POV

Crap! Whatever nerves I was trying to calm, they were shot again. Tom stood before us, raging. His eyes were wide with fury as he glared down at me. He hadn't changed out of his work clothes yet, I could safely assume that he hadn't been home for very long.

But what good would that assumption do for me? Nothing. Tom had gotten home before me. That was the problem.

"Where were you?!" He bellowed again and I tried to speak.

I really tried.

There was a lump stuck in my throat and I couldn't find the words. Where was I? What could I possibly say? After leaving the hospital, I went to see an art exhibition. That I had gotten carried away with Anabelle and hadn't checked my phone nor the time?

What could I possibly say that wouldn't result in us getting into more trouble?!
