IRIS' P. O. V
There was a reason why Massimo Scavo was known to be a ruthless underground crime boss. He was a predator, and I was the unfortunate prey, bound to him by debt and a ring.
On a cold Wednesday morning, his hand travelled down my hips and slid between my thighs.
“No!” I gritted out, trying to close my legs, but a chunk of his two hundred pound body was already wedged between them. “Please, Massimo stop!”
But he didn’t.
Instead, his hand went further up my thighs, drawing up my silk robe. “Massimo, please! We aren’t married yet! This wasn’t part of the deal!”
My fiancé paused and looked at me with merciless, dark brown eyes, then he gripped my chin roughly. “You’ll soon be my wife anyway, so why not get this over with. Mhm?” His hot breath fanned my ears as his hand brushed against my panties, causing panic to settle deep within my bones.
I looked at his disgusting face and wondered why I couldn’t have been engaged to someone good-looking. At least if he were half as handsome as my one-night stand, then I wouldn’t have minded letting him have his way. But the reality was that I was engaged to an ugly brute and as he kissed on my neck, I tried to imagine it was my one-night-stand.
I tried to recall the memories of that night and how good it had been to be touched by him. With a crushing clarity, it immediately dawned on me that Massimo will never compare because, deep down, that my one-night stand had ruined my taste for any other man.
“Massimo,” I whine, trying to push his hand down and away, but he wouldn’t budge.
“Shut up!” He gripped the fabric of my panties and that panic within gave way to anger, and before I could stop myself or think things through, I placed a hand on his face and one on his chest and pushed back with all my strength. Surprisingly, he staggers back, but the cold, stark realization that I had just fucked up immediately dawned on me.
Massimo turned to me with a glare meant to kill, and despite knowing what was coming, I still wasn’t ready for the hand connecting with my face.
It came like thunder, sending me to the ground, and with it came a stinging pain originating from my cheek. Instinctively, I touched it when I felt warmth trickling out and just as I feared, Massimo had busted my face open with his ring studded hand.
His eyes carried fire as he glared down at me. “Get up!”
A sob escapes me. "Massimo, please!" He bends down and grabs me by the front of my robe, his hand poised to strike me again.
"Boss." A voice called, and my gaze slid to a man in his late fifties with greying hair, wearing the familiar emotionless gaze that all of Massimo's men carry.
"What?!" Massimo snapped.
"He's here."
"Tell him to wait in my office!"
The man hesitated, his eyes fell on me and I pleaded with him with mine. Something flashed in his expression, and I didn't miss the quick curl of his hands into fists. Massimo turned back to him, probably shooting him a death glare, making the man nod before leaving.
Massimo turned back to me, and my heart rate spiked at the thought of him striking again. Instead, he let me go with a heavy breath, and I almost sigh in relief. “Clean that up!” He pointed at my face before leaving the room. I had no idea, I was holding my breath, until he left, and then the sobs came out in angry tears. Noticing splotches of blood staining my robe, I got up and headed for the bathroom.
Going for the first-aid kit is automatic.
I’ve done this too many times to count and as I stared back into puffy, pale green eyes, I wondered how I ended up here. I used to be a star reporter at the height of my career and on track to a great life, until…well, I closed my eyes, trying to shut down the horrid memory that destroyed my life. Out of habit, I touch my pendant and open it to see a picture of three young ladies. It was taken right after we graduated from high school and had high hopes for ourselves.
I was in the middle, while my two best friends were on either side of me. The one to my right was Hilda Pérez, a brunette with almond shaped eyes, and a beautiful smile, while the one on my left was easily the most beautiful of us three.
Mary Petrov was blonde with big blue eyes and an innocent look about her. The both of us had moved to the big city to further our studies, while Hilda had stayed behind.
As a consequence, Mary and I had got to be more like sisters, and we were doing just fine…until that tragic night when she got shot and ended up in a coma.
Before the incident, Mary had been shortlisted for an internship in London, and it was what we were going to celebrate that night. I never expected things to go wrong. I never expected to be the reason why Mary got shot.
Tears spring to my eyes as I remember the events of that night. It had been tragic and awful and downright heartbreaking, and I was to blame for it all.
I became filled with guilt as I let myself have a moment where my sobs were muffled by one hand while I hugged myself with the other.
When I was finally able to calm down, I closed the pendant and sent up a quick prayer for Mary’s pull through. Her mother had informed me earlier that Mary would be undergoing surgery today and that it could possibly wake her up and stop her internal bleeding.
Making quick work of cleaning up my wound, I proceeded to my bedroom to apply makeup and get ready for the day.
Knowing Massimo would throw a fit if I am not ready before him, I quickly touch-up my makeup and get dressed in a simple black dress, with black elbow-length gloves and a black hair-fascinator.
Today was a day of mourning for the Scavo family, which meant Massimo and I were going to the funeral of his brother, who was also a Don. Before leaving my room, I made sure my wound was perfectly buried under a ton of concealer.
I hated that I had gotten good at hiding my scars.
Sadly, since I got engaged to Massimo, there are so many things I hate about myself now.
Shortly after Massimo climbed in, we leave his estate, riding for about two hours until we get to a point where the road becomes packed with reporters and cameramen, all vying for the pictures of the elite invited to the private burial of famous billionaire, Alessandro Scavo’s father. Then we drove about half a mile until we reached a mansion, and it was nothing like I had ever seen. I thought Massimo's manor was the biggest in the region, but I was wrong, the Scavo mansion was twice as huge and as wide as half an acre. My phone buzzed, and I checked it to see a message from my best friend, Hilda.“Where are you?!” She asked.“Already here.” I typed back. “What’s up?”“You need to get in asap! Alessandro Scavo is here!”My brows furrowed in confusion. "Who is that?!”“Oh, I forgot Massimo cut you off from the internet. Alessandro is the best thing since sliced bread. He's so handsome my heart breaks every time he smiles.”My lips curl into the faintest smile as I read Hilda's text gush
IRIS P.O.V A sound startled me awake. It sounded like an engine that was refusing to start. Then I felt the warmth searing my back and Massimo's rough breathing behind my ears.Of course, he was snoring.Anger, disgust and other vile emotions made me grit my teeth, grab his hand from my waist and shove it back roughly. At this point, I gave zero fucks if he woke up and complained. In one move, I was pushing back the covers and sitting up in bed. With my head in my hands, memories of the previous day washed over me. After Hilda had given me the news, I had gone numb all over and had drank too much champagne till my legs wobbled in their heels and I almost caused a scene.I vaguely remember Hilda informing Massimo of my friend's demise, and Alessandro had arranged for me to be taken to one of the bedrooms in his mansion. After that, everything else had become hazy. I had ended up throwing my guts, and Hilda had held my hair through it all. Massimo didn’t once check in on me, but I was s
IRIS P.O.VTwo days later, I’m back in Massimo's house, a bit broken and devastated. After Alessandro had walked in, Massimo had explained what I had done to incur his wrath, and they had spoken in Italian before Massimo stormed off. Because I was naked, I had scrambled for my towel and had been terribly embarrassed. Alessandro had closed the distance between us, and my terror had escalated. He simply put a hand under my chin and moved it to the side, and I didn't miss the way it hardened when he saw my wound. After that, he had arranged for a doctor to come see me and patch my wound, and I didn't see him again after that. Now, I was here at dinner with Massimo’s extended family, talking over one another as they chatted away in Italian and English.I barely knew any of them, and they rarely looked my way, which was fine with me. The only people I was acquainted with were Julian and Marco, who were Massimo’s sons and were seated opposite me.I didn't know much about Marco because he
IRIS' P. O. VStanding next to Massimo, Les whispers something in my fiancé's ear while staring intently at me. Massimo turns to look at me, making me wish the ground would open and swallow me up.Massimo beckons for me, and I rise on shaky legs, making my way to his table slowly, while my gaze shifts from Massimo to Les and back. How could Les betray me like this?!I reach the table and Massimo looks at me with a hard expression. "What's wrong with you?""What?" I blink."You're shaking all over.""Oh." was what I could say. "Not feeling well." I answered with a quick smile.Massimo watches me for a moment before speaking, "My nephew needs directions to my private wine collection, take him there and after that, guide him to my office. I'll meet you there and then you can go."I blinked in surprise. “That’s it?”Massimo looked at me like I was stupid. “Was there something else you were expecting?”I immediately shook my head. “No.”I caught Les' gaze, which was cold and expressionless.
IRIS’ P.O.V The room Les brought me to was a storage room but it had been rearranged to accommodate a small table and two chairs. On this table was a small platter of food that seemed to be from the main course that was spread hours ago at dinner. I looked at Les, and then the food on the table. “What's going on?” I whispered, barely able to contain my feelings. “Are you trying to date me or something?” A corner of his lips tilted up in a smile. “I'm not that romantic,” he said, causing me to smile too. “Please, if you’ll allow me.” He said, motioning to the table. He placed a hand gently on my left arm and I had to bite my bottom lip, so I don’t remember how he touched me that night. I followed his guidance as he led me to the table and pulled out a chair for me to sit. "Why did you need to go to your Uncle's private wine collection?" I asked. Les smiled to himself. "Because I needed an excuse to be alone with you." Our gazes collide. "That and because my uncle promised to sh
IRIS’ P.O.V My body began to tremble of its own accord the closer Massimo got. “Relax.” Les said and my body instantly obeyed.Massimo eyed me with a strange expression before turning to Les. “I hope she got you the wine, nephew?” My breath hitched once again, and panic ran through me like a wildfire. “Yes, Uncle.” Les replied, making me turn to him in disbelief. “It's in your office already.” My mouth dropped open some more as I wondered how and when. At that point in time, Massimo received a call, so he dismissed me with a hand and motioned to his nephew to follow him into his office but Les doesn't follow immediately, which made me approach him with wide eyes. “How were you able to do that?!” I whisper-shouted. “Is the wine really in there?!”Les beamed down at me. “Yes. It is.” “But, how?” Les explained how he had gone down to the cellar while I was eating and had put the bottle in his Uncle's office. “I wanted you to have enough time to get some food in and not rush when t
IRIS’ P.O.V My eyes didn't leave the gun as Massimo waddled towards me. A bead of sweat hurriedly traveled down my back as I stood, rigid and paralyzed, in the anticipation of my death. Massimo must have found out about the key and considering what he did to that Mexican boy, there was no point in giving excuses anymore. Every fiber of my being trembled and when Massimo got close, I held my breath, squeezed my eyes shut and waited for the bang that would end it all. The first thing I felt was the essence of Massimo's body passing by me. ‘Okay, was he planning on shooting me from the back?’ I wondered. My heart pounded once, then again, and when nothing happened, I squint one eye open to find my fiancé wandering aimlessly about the room. His eyes seemed half-lidded, his head hung low and his mouth slack open and then it dawned on me.Massimo was sleepwalking. I almost laughed in disbelief until I remembered the gun in his hand. A sleepwalker and a loaded gun was a very bad combo
LES’ P.O.V I heard her swallow on the other end of the line. “Please hold on,” she said, and from my point of view, I watched her ease out of bed and head for the bathroom. I wished there was a camera there too. Maybe I should have one installed just so I can watch her. Some part of me, the decent part that I had created to overshadow my past self screamed at me that I would be invading her privacy. Then the other part of me, the one that made up majority of who I am and is also the one I try to keep buried doesn't even give a fuck about her privacy. She gave that up the moment she had that gun to her head. When I found the balcony doors open and my uncle about to sleepwalk to his death, it had felt like watching a bad TV soap opera and deep inside, I was rooting for the fall. When I saw the same wish on Iris’ face, I knew she was planning his death and I suddenly wasn't all for it anymore. If my uncle had died at that moment, a lot of things would have happened and it would not
IRISAll feelings of amusement left me as things turned serious. I readjusted in my seat and crossed my legs. “Okay. Let's talk.”Les rose to his feet and offered me his hand. “First of all, I want to show you something.” Curious, I slipped my hand in his and let him take me upstairs. We went past a couple of rooms before we stopped at one and he unlocked it. Once he opened it, he stepped aside for me to go in first. Throwing a curious glance at him, I pushed the door further, went in and my mouth dropped open. One wall was painted with the drawing of an ocean and a red headed mermaid sitting on a rock in the midst of it. Then another wall had mickey mouse characters drawn on them and another had Tom and Jerry smiling at each other. In the midst of the room was a baby crib and I froze in my steps when I saw it. I turned around to find Les watching me intently with his hands shoved in his pockets. He shifted his weight on his feet - a sign I realize indicated his nervousness.“Do y
LESThe fluorescent lights flickered overhead as we sat in the waiting room of the hospital, the scent of antiseptic hanging heavy in the air. Iris fidgeted nervously beside me, her fingers twisting around each other as she glanced around at the sterile walls."You okay, Bunny?" I asked, reaching out to squeeze her hand. She offered me a weak smile. "Yeah, just a little anxious about the scan."I nodded, understanding her apprehension. The thought of seeing our baby for the first time was enough to make anyone jittery. But I was also excited, eager to catch a glimpse of the life growing inside Iris. After what felt like an eternity, the nurse called us in, and we followed her down the hallway to the ultrasound room. Iris settled onto the examination table, her eyes fixed on the monitor as the nurse squirted gel onto her belly. And then, there it was. A tiny flicker on the screen, like a beacon of hope in the darkness. Our baby's heartbeat.Iris let out a shaky breath, her eyes shimmer
IRIS:In a matter of minutes the entire living room was destroyed. I stood still in the carnage as shattered glass covered the ground and furniture became upturned. Les yelled every obscene word known to man. He went on to punch walls till his knuckles cracked and his blood ran red down the walls. Rick ran in with the other security men, confused but with their weapons drawn.“GET OUT!!” Les yelled at them. The men hesitated, especially Rick who looked my way and seemed like he didn't want to leave me with him. “Come Ma'am. Let's go.” He said as he approached me with his hand stretched forward. I had no idea I was vibrating where I stood until I raised my hand and found it shaking violently. The next thing I hear is the click of a gun. I froze just about to touch Rick and turned. Les had a gun pointed at Rick and his eyes were filled with utter madness. “Touch her and you die!” I turned to see Rick with his hands up, retreating backwards. “Sorry ma'am.” He said apologetically befo
LES My baby resumes work today and I am not happy about it. I wish she was the kind of woman who was content being a housewife that loves to cook and wait for her husband to come home. Wait a fucking minute. Why am I looking at Iris through the lens of marriage?I wasn't a big believer in it especially since my father was shitty to my mom and didn't keep his vows. I feel the whole idea of marriage is pretty useless. I am already loyal to Iris and will never look at any other woman. She's mine. Forever. So why do I need to put a ring on it?I continued to wonder about that as I leaned against the doorframe of my closet and watched my Bunny wear a Wonder Woman panty and matching bra color. She turned slightly and my gaze fell on her tummy which was now the size of a small watermelon. I felt something but I couldn’t process what it was. To think that in six months time, this woman whom I am totally obsessed with will give birth to mini mes and mini Iris. I wonder what the babies wi
LESI was in the throes of my own anger, but the moment I noticed the departure of my brother, my rage softened. One glance at Iris and she nodded at me to go after him, which I did. Entering the elevator, I pulled out my phone and accessed all the cameras to pinpoint my brother's location. It didn't take long to find him scurrying down the stairs to the ground floor. My brother has always been one to maintain composure in all things but now, from my point of view, he was an agitated mess. Pressing the button for the ground floo, I sighed and let the elevator begin its descent to the living room. Sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like, if I had grown up with a good, normal father. Maybe I'd be some corporate guy living in a cute condo, married with one or two kids instead of having an irrational fear of intimacy and⁸8⁸⁸fatherhood. Maybe, I'd be a normal guy. But I'm not. Instead I'm messed up in the head, struggling with a trauma I wouldn't wish on anyone. Thank Go
LES“I see you've lost all your senses posting that girl online.”I rolled my eyes at my brother who was cleaning his pistol while holding a video call with me. The sun had just gone down over the horizon, casting my office in semi darkness while the landscape of New York city came alive with colorful night lights. “I guess you can call me ‘crazy’. Crazy about her.” I smiled as I shoveled some Chinese noodles into my mouth with chopsticks.“What you will be, is sorry if you don't stop.”I stopped chewing and glared at him. My brother didn't look at me. Instead, he continued to clean his weapon as if he didn't just say something disturbing. “Why would you say that?”“Because you're being a fool right now. Posting her for the world to see, especially for our Uncle to see, is like looking into the eye of a python and spitting in its face.”James was right. I was usually a very calculated mind but lately, I have been getting carried away by my affection for Iris and may have unintentio
Chapter 56:IRISOver the next couple of days, I continued to send out applications and even tried writing some pieces but I realized I was experiencing a block. When I couldn't make headway, I sat down in front of a TV and watched some cartoons. It was my coping mechanism back at Massimo's house and it's starting to be my coping mechanism now. Cartoons weren't always at Les' place either. I was surprised when one day I received a delivery signed to me and when I opened it, I discovered Les had bought all variations of cartoons for me to watch. Along with some T-shirts with cartoon characters on them. Les continued to leave pleasant surprises for me while I carried my one unpleasant surprise inside my body and whenever talk about Taylor came up, he refused to talk about it and everyday I became more and more depressed. If I wasn't writing, I was also video calling my Dad or Hilda. Now that I had a working phone, I was able to access my old social media profiles. I came across a lo
IRIS“Can we still go about our day while we ruminate on this?” Les asked and I considered his request reasonable. “Sure.”I changed into one of the dresses he got me, and then we went downstairs to have brunch. All through, we ate in silence, and I hated it. I hated that I spoiled the mood between us and made it awkward with the topic of a child. After our brunch, Les took me on a tour of his mansion, and I was able to learn a few more things about him. Les was an artist who painted in his pastime, and I wondered how he was able to do that and still be an underground fighter during his teen years. I saw all the championship belts he had won and heard all the stories behind them. Then he showed me his car collections, the grounds which had a stable and two horses. By the time we were done that day, it was late evening, and we weren’t able to go shopping any more, but I didn’t mind. Getting to see a new side of him was refreshing. I got to learn that Les The Beast wasn’t really his
IRISA cold shiver went through me as my father’s words sank in. “Excuse me?!” “Iris-” My father started to speak, but I raised a hand to cut him short.“So I was a mistake?”My father looked horrified for a second before he closed the distance between us. “No, no, no, no.” he said, coming to sit beside me. “You were never a mistake, Iris, and I am glad your mother chose to keep you.”“What if she hadn’t?” I sniffled and wiped a tear from my eye. “Would you have regretted it?”My father sighed. “I honestly don’t know. All I know is that I am happy she didn’t listen to me. Look at me.” He said, taking my hands in his, which in turn made me face him. “You are the best thing that has ever happened to me since your mother. You are not a mistake, and you never were. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to be a good father to you and give you the resources that you needed. I was fresh out of high school, inheriting a run-down port left behind by a drunken father. You can understand how having
