A PIECE OF CAKE

"Mr Edgar!" a child shouted.

Edgar, facing forward, looking at the building, immediately approached. Edgar wiped away his tears. He took a moment to catch his breath before finally turning around to look at the child who had called out to him earlier.

"What's wrong, Fi? Aren't you coming to eat cake?" asked Edgar.

"Neither did you," said Fifi - one of the orphanage children.

Edgar tried to smile. "The cake is for you all."

"You brought it too. You can eat it too. Eating together is better, you know."

Edgar was stunned. He was speechless at the words of the six-year-old in front of him.

"Are you crying?" asked Fifi.

Edgar looked at Fifi. "No, really."

Without being asked, Fifi wiped away the tears that were about to fall from Edgar's eyes. As one of the children in the orphanage who had been cared for from infancy, Fifi knew Edgar well.
