Raphael's POV
“Why in the world would you think I'm jealous?” Henrietta asked, her voice tinging with a hint of curiosity.
I turned away from her, “Well, what would you expect me to think? You're not letting me go see Kristine, which I find really weird because I don't recall any clause in our contract stating that you get to restrict my movement at any point in time.”
“But it didn't mention no entertainment of third parties.” She fired back.
“Kristine…isn't a third party Henrietta. I don't know what we are right now but she's not a threat to what we share.”
Kristine chuckled, “Sure, because this third party revolves around you. The statement would have surely been different if I was the one entertaining a third party.”
I shook my head from ear, “You're being so dramatic. You already said you're not jealous so please stop acting like you are because I don't know what else to make out of this.”
Kristine grumbled low nothings and I didn't bother asking her what she said as I was in no mood for arguments.
We stared at each other and seeing that I uttered nothing, her face went pale and her shoulders slumped. She folded her fingers over the other as she stared out of the car.
She didn't look happy…and I couldn't place a possible reason as she already cleared the thoughts of her possibly brewing feelings for me.
Following the dead silence after her grumble subsided, I plopped out of the car. As I walked further away from the car, my mind kept replaying the scene from the car.
Should I have talked better? Or perhaps I shouldn't have said so much? I got worried as I recalled how her face split with sadness.
Maybe she was mad? But I didn't say anything bad…I only reiterated the truth.
‘If you're that bothered, then just apologize.’ I nodded in agreement to the thought but that was going to be after seeing Kristine.
The vehicles drove past me in full speed, making my suit fly in the air. I couldn't risk taking my car as Henrietta would figure out that Kristine's place wasn't far from ours.
The moment I spotted a white cab driving towards my direction, I hailed it and plopped in. After giving the driver the address, I relaxed my head on the car headrest, allowing my subconscious take over…
The warm gust of air swept over my face, helping me relax better. I soon got lost in my mind as a series of random thoughts crept in.
“Sir, we're here.” The driver's voice snapped me out of my mind.
I straightened myself as I handed him some cash for the ride before leaving the car.
The blue painted apartment looked quite small compared to what I had in mind. I opened the fenced gate, walking through a passageway of beautiful ornamental flowers.
With a few long strides, I arrived at the front door. I pressed on the doorbell, hearing the sound of the doorbell ringing inside.
There was no one approaching, I could tell from the silky curtain hanging down the window.
I was about hitting the doorbell again when I noticed a familiar figure approaching the door.
The door knob twisted open and a small smile spread across my lips as Kristine's face came in view.
“Hey…Come in.” Kristine gestured inside.
I walked into the apartment and the first thing that noticed was a baby staggering towards the door.
“Is this Katie?” My eyes widened in surprise as I stared at the cute baby staring at me with big green eyes.
I lowered my body to pick up the baby and the babbling from Katie made my heart feel warm. It felt so good having my baby in my arms.
“She's such a cute baby,” I complimented as Katie's small fingers wrapped around a finger of mine.
Kristine stood behind me, gently smoothening Katie's hair with her hand.
“Yes, she is. But she can be quite a lot to handle,” Kristine hummed softly.
My brows twitched, “I refuse to believe that. She looks so harmless, I doubt she has the ability to stress anyone honestly.”
Kristine breathed a laughter, “Oh really? Do you have any idea what she did today? She wouldn't stop crying when I dropped her at the daycare. I had to tip the nanny because of her noise.”
Raphael smirked, “She's expected to get scared. It's a new environment, one without her mom.”
Kristine rounded my body, standing in front of me with squinted eyes.
“The saying is correct, men will always support their children first.”
I snuggled my neck into Katie's body as I inhaled her soft baby lotion smell deeply as I didn't know when I'd get to visit again.
“That's right, it's just sad that she doesn't look like me.” I declared and Kristine's face went void of expression, like my statement shocked her.
“Why are you staring at me like a doll?” I questioned and she blinked back before clearing her throat.
“Oh nothing. I just didn't think you'd have wanted to have a child with me. Talk more of wanting to have the child look like you…” Kristine rubbed both sides of her arms like she was feeling cold.
I gently placed Katie on the brown couch before turning to Kristine.
“Kristine, you know I loved you so much. So much. Why would you think I'd not want to have a child with you?”
Kristine walked towards the small dining table on the left side of the room, pulling out a chair to take a seat.
“Maybe because you never talked about the future? I just didn't know what to do when I found out and..”
“Shush” I placed a hand on my lips, hoping she'd understand the action.
As if on cue, Kristine's lips snapped shut and she rested her head on her folded fingers.
I moved closer to her, pulling out a wooden chair to sit in front of her.
I swiped my tongue over my lips, “Kristine….ever since you left that day, I never healed from it. I tried searching for you everywhere, believe me when I say I searched every nook and cranny but there was no trace but the letter you left saying you didn't want to be with me anymore.”
Kristine stared at me, unable to speak.
“And even then, I never got over you. I resorted to hatred because I knew that was the only way I could get over you, over us. But trust me when I say that coming back into my life was the best decision you made because…because I missed you so much.” I finished, my voice raw and filled with sincerity.
These words have been longing to come out for so long and saying them now made me feel so relieved. Except the rush of cool happiness that was supposed to come after wasn't there…I felt tensed.
Kristine's eyes sparkled with tears, she blinked them back but they still flowed anyway. Her pointed nose reddened as she sniffled tears.
Without thinking, I took her in my arms, hugging her tightly. Her lavender scent was the only thing I could perceive with her body trembling in my arms.
“I'm sorry…I'm so sorry Raphael. I love you and I missed you so much too. I know I said I came back for just the child but the truth is that, I couldn't live without you anymore.”
Like a cold bath on a hot day, Kristine's words calmed the tension I was feeling.
I pulled her out of the embrace, driving my thumb over her face.
Before I could speak, she beat me to it.
“If you couldn't get over me, why are you married to Kristine?” Kristine asked, her voice dripping with a tone of softness.
“I only got married to her because of my father.”
This was all I could tell Kristine. I couldn't tell her anything else because I didn't want any trouble with my plans.
Kristine's eyes glistened with hope, “If you don't love her, then make things right. There's no point of her being in your life.”
I shook my head in the negative, “I'm sorry, I can't do that. My father would be mad.”
Kristine rose up from the chair, her brows pulling together in a frown.
“Really? So you care about your father more than your future with me and Katie?”
I rose up as well, “No, of course not. I just can't do that right now, I'd make things right but maybe after a few months.”
“Aren't you tired of us waiting? You have to make the choice now. Are you choosing me and your child or you're choosing to listen to your father?”
Raphael’s POV “Kristine, come on,” I said, my voice was steady but it took all my self control not to break down with the weight of the situation. “You know I can’t just make that decision right now, there’s a lot more at stake.” She leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed right around her body like she was holding herself together. Her expression was cold but her eyes held a different emotion. Sadness. “I didn’t come back here to play games with you, Raphael. These things you do are the reason why I left in the first place, it’s always uncertain with you. I’ve been patient, okay? I’ve been too patient, it’s either you want to be a part of this or you don’t.” Kristine said. “I am a part of it,” I shot back. “She’s my child too, but you can’t make me just take such a decision right now, you can’t try to force it. There are things I need to do first.” She let out a sharp laugh, but it wasn’t because anything was funny. “Yeah right! You think this is gonna be one of your ga
Raphael’s POV I stood in the hallway, my mind raced. Henrietta had never spoken to me like this in all the time we knew each other and I couldn’t figure out why for the life of me, she was doing that now. I had to figure out what was really going on, so I marched up the stairs straight to her door and opened it. “Henrietta, what the hell do you mean by what you said?” I asked, my jaw tight with anger. Henrietta didn’t even look startled. “I mean I’m done playing house while you sneak around with your little secret side wife.” I stepped forward, a heated rage rising under my skin. “You can’t just walk out. You know you can’t.” “Watch me then,” she snapped, spinning towards a suitcase. I grabbed her wrist, trying my best not to be rough but just firm enough for her to look at me. “Don’t forget why we’re doing this. My father is finally starting to respect me, he finally believes that I can be responsible. For the first time in a long time, I have his ears, if you leave now, the

Henrietta had never spoken to me like this in all the time we knew each other and I couldn’t figure out why for the life of me, she was doing that now. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from Kristine. Her name flashed on the screen and instead of the warmth I should have felt, I felt awkward. It felt like she just came back and turned my life upside down. I could leave the house now, say I needed air so I could go and meet Kristine and shut her up before she could keep calling my phone. I knocked on the door. I knew she could hear me. “You were right,” I said suddenly. I didn’t hear any movement inside. “I’ll stop seeing her.” I heard the door click open. “What?” She blinked at me, definitely caught off guard by my statement. “I’ll end whatever it is she’s trying to start up again” I said, clearing my throat. “You said it yourself. This isn’t about feelings, this marriage is a contract but I crossed a line and y
Henrietta’s POV It was nearly 10 p.m, yet Raphael still wasn’t home. This was totally unlike him. He hadn’t sent a message, he hadn’t called or even sent a vague ‘working late’ text. I sat in the living room, one leg crossed over the other, my foot bounced with restrained anxiety. I had told myself I wouldn’t care, not after all that’s happened in the past few days. But the truth was, I cared, I always had and that was the part I hated the most. I couldn’t even toughen up. The lights in the house were ok low and there was no sound except my timely sighs and the ticking of the antique grandfather clock that his father gave us as a wedding gift because he thought it’d add some character to our home. It usually didn’t bother me but tonight, it sounded like it was counting down to something awful or ominous. I picked up my phone and called him again. It went straight to voicemail, his voice calm and collected asked me to leave a message after the beep. I didn’t. I hung up and
Henrietta’s POV I felt like the room was spinning or maybe it was just my head. I didn’t know which. Raphael stood in the middle of our living room, he still looked disheveled and scattered. She was seated on the armchair now with the baby in her arms, she held the girl tightly like if she let go, the baby would run away. I couldn’t take my eyes off the scene playing in front of me. I couldn’t process how any of this was happening under our roof. With my mind still turning, I looked at Raphael. “What happened?”He met my gaze, he looked tired, heavy and I wanted to believe that he was going to be honest with me. “I didn’t plan this,” he said. “I just ran into her by chance. She looked shaken and said she needed help getting a few baby things so I drove her to that big mall near Westfield, we were shopping and then I opted to take her to her house and when we got there, her house was on fire.” My stomach tightened. “There were already sirens everywhere and the entire place was i
Raphael’s POV Kristine’s body felt lighter than I had expected as I carried her down the hallway, her skin felt cold and her breathing was shallow. The baby was no longer fussing and was now cradled in Henrietta’s arms, calm. Henrietta didn’t say a word after she called the doctor. She just watched me with that unreadable expression she always had on her face. I laid Kristine gently on the guest bed, her hair sprawled over the pillow, she looked pale… very pale. “Kristine,” I said, crouching beside her. “Kristine, can you hear me?” There was no sign or response. I rubbed her palms gently, trying my best to be firm enough to stir her awake. After a few minutes, she stirred. Her eyes fluttered open lazily. “What… what happened?” She asked, her voice faint. “What happened? You fainted.” I said. “But it’s okay. You’re awake now. The doctor’s on his way.” She looked around the room, dazed. “I… I don’t remember anything. One moment I was standing and the next everything just… wen
Henrietta’s POV There was a time when I used to think silence was peaceful but now it just felt like pressure. Since Kristine moved into our home, the space had changed, even the air felt different and Raphael? His energy felt… new. With me, he’d been quiet, colder in some ways and distracted most times. But when it came to her, to his beloved Kristine, his guard dropped. I noticed how he lingered longer in conversation with her, how he listened attentively to her pointless conversation and how he laughed with her in a way that felt real and genuine. I hated myself for noticing, for drawing comparison between his acting with me and his actions with her. That wasn’t all, I hated how much it bothered me. I kept telling myself it shouldn’t matter. Henrietta’s POV As we drove to the charity gala, the car felt colder than usual. We didn't make small talk, just silence. I sat stiffly in the passenger seat, my hands rested on my thighs, my eyes fixed on the road ahead. Silence wasn’t a new thing between Raphael and I, but tonight it held something different, something deep. The sting of being reminded, in such a manner, that I was just the wife on paper was going to be a sore soon. I was just the one who came to events and smiled for the camera. Henrietta’s POV It was already past noon and the aroma from the muffins I had made earlier still filled the house. Kristine and I sat in the dining area for lunch. Thankfully, the baby was asleep in her bassinet, her tiny chest rising and falling. Her entire wardrobe was color matched, it was mostly pinks, whites, pastel and every other joyful color one could think of. We weren’t speaking so the only sound in the room was the clinks of our cutlery against our plates. The room was quiet but I could already feel the weird shift in the air like there was a pressure to speak and I knew she would strike up a conversation soon. She finally spoke up, quicker than I anticipated. “I just wanted to say thank you, for last night.” I wasn’t surprised but I tried to sound nice. “You don't need to thank me.” “Actually I do,” she insisted, her voice soft. “You don’t need to help me, you could have watched us scamper up and down and stood back but you knew what to do and you jumped in and hel
Raphael’s POV The moment I entered the house, I could hear the baby crying. Katie’s cry sounded sharp and restless. She was agitated and maybe whatever was wrong with her was serious. I rushed towards the living room and found Kristine pacing the room, she was barefooted and her hair looked a mess. Her one hand bounced the baby gently while the other one had a damp cloth that she used to wipe at her face. Her eyes snapped up when she saw me. “I googled some stuff, I don’t know which one to do, her fever dropped a bit though,” she said quickly, in one breath. “She's still fussing a lot and crying and I think we need to take her to the hospital as fast as possible.” I moved closer to her, I had no idea what to do, I had only been a father for less than a week. “Let me feel her.” She shifted the head of the baby towards me, her skin was still warm but it didn’t seem like a fever but I didn’t know the temperature that could be called a fever for kids. “Let’s get to the car,” I sai
