The sun rays passed through the window panes and kissed Shanaya's face, fuelling her annoyance. She barely slept the previous night. Dhruv wouldn't let her. The little time that he did allow her, she wasted away by thinking constantly of what had happened between them and what it meant.

Her head ached from the lack of sleep, making her frown as she lifted herself from the bed, covering her naked body with the white sheets. On the other hand, Dhruv slept peacefully on his stomach, snoring lightly. The sheets concealed the lower half of his body, keeping the other half on display for her eyes and she smirked. The smirk vanished as soon as she recollected moments from the previous night.

Dhruv provoked her and she reacted just as he wanted her to. With a groan, she closed her eyes, gathering her hair into a messy bun.

Her eyes darted around the room in search of her clothes—the striped dress she wore the previous night, but all she found were the bits and pieces of what remained of her expensive attire. Her frown deepened.

Giving the sleeping figure in the bed a nasty look, she got up and walked towards the wardrobe, pulling out a fresh towel and an oversized T-shirt.

‘You expected me to walk around naked in your house?’ thought Shanaya as she looked at his face, a solemn, innocent look plastered on it. There was no evidence there of what happened the previous night. Truthfully, Shanaya would think of it as a fever dream as well, had her dress not been torn to pieces.

Dhruv avoided the sun just right, sleeping like a baby. While a part of her wanted to hit him with a pillow, the other, kinder part urged to let him sleep some more with the veiled intention of escaping before he woke.

Shanaya’s attention was drawn to his phone, placed on the bedside table that started to vibrate with an incoming call. She tiptoed to it, feeling rebellious as she glanced at the screen.

The name ‘Anjali’ flashed across the screen over a picture saved with the contact number. Frowning, Shanaya studied the woman’s face carefully. She was beautiful, draped in a turquoise dress and a pearly grin. Her face appeared familiar to her but Shanaya could not remember where she had seen her before.

The phone screen went black only for the phone to vibrate again with another incoming call from the same woman.

Shanaya felt a strange tug at her chest as she chewed on her bottom lip. Who was this woman and why was she calling him over and over again?

Dhruv stirred on the bed, startling Shanaya. She sprang away from the bedside table, her eyes peeking at him to make sure he was not awake.

With one last glance at Anjali’s face, Shanaya walked away, deciding to take a shower.

When Shanaya stepped out of the bathroom, she expected to find Dhruv’s sleeping figure on the bed. But he was long gone—the bed made and the sheets all properly folded. He had woken up, despite her hoping that he would sleep some more. His phone was also gone which meant he had received Anjali’s call.

Shanaya sighed, her mind drawing up the woman’s face, an unsettling feeling rising in her chest. Who was she?

Shanaya walked to the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. Dhruv’s T-shirt ended just above her knees, and once again she realized how tiny she was compared to him. That’s when she spotted Dhruv through the window.

He was in the driveway, the top half of his body bare, leaning against the window frame of a car. He was talking to a woman sitting in the driver’s seat. When Shanaya narrowed her eyes, she could not help but find semblance between the picture she had seen on his phone and the woman he was currently talking to.

“Oh,” Shanaya mumbled as the realization struck. It was Anjali Bhatt, their batchmate from high school. Shanaya recalled her having a huge crush on Dhruv even though he had never reciprocated any such feeling.

Had something happened between them over the years? Then what was last night about?

Shanaya felt her heart tremble at the thought of having gotten caught in Dhruv’s web. As much as she wanted to, she knew she could not flee. She wanted to know what exactly was going on.

On her way to the kitchen, Shanaya picked up her purse and sent a quick text to Shaheer, hoping he was awake.

When no response arrived even after five minutes, she decided to call him.

After two rings, her assistant received the call and answered with a sleepy, "Hey."

"Shaheer, where are you?" Shanaya said in an authoritative tone, one she only usually used at work to drive the sleep out of everyone.

It seemed to work because his voice changed the next time he spoke, sounding buzzed. "Yes, ma'am. I'm at home. Do you need any help?"

Shanaya was about to speak when she heard another female voice in the background, sounding suspiciously similar to Aliyah's.

She pretended to not hear her and said, "I need you to pick me up. I'll text you the address as soon as I cut the call. The place is twenty minutes away from the office. Also, er–I need you to first stop by my apartment and fetch me a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Will you be here in about thirty?"

The hesitation appeared again in his voice but he agreed anyway and with a sigh of relief, Shanaya ended the call before proceeding to send him the address.

Her stomach rumbled and as a means of passing some time, she cracked open an egg on the pan. The scent filled the air quickly, accelerating the rumbling. However, when she heard someone clear their throat behind her, all her appetite vanished into the same thin fried-egg scented air.

"I was hungry so I made myself a coffee and a fried egg," she said without turning around.

The sound of footsteps fell on her ears, forcing her to turn around. For a moment, Shanaya feared that Anjali was in the house too. But then a sense of relief washed over her. Dhruv stood a few inches away, a white towel wrapped around his waist. Water dripped from his hair as he ran a hand through it.

When his eyes landed on her, they raked up and down her body and his eyebrow lifted while his lips formed a tiny frown. He wasn’t smiling anymore like he was earlier with Anjali outside.

"What are you wearing?" he asked, tilting his head.

"Your t-shirt," said Shanaya and rolled her eyes.

"And who gave you the permission to wear it?"

"You did yourself when you tore my dress into two pieces."

His lips curved in delight at her words but returned back to normal soon enough. "Did I? I don't remember it." He shook his head.

"Hmm, blame your rusty mind. What was your intent anyway? To have me walking naked around your house?"

He pressed his lips together, attempting but failing to keep the amusement out of his voice. "Maybe. That'd be a nice sight, I must admit."

"Too bad for you. Your plan failed."

"So," he said, taking a step closer. "What's your plan for the day? Walking around my house in that?" His eyes slid down to where the cloth ended above her knees. "I don't mind, honestly. And I have no plan of dropping you off elsewhere." He took another step.

Shanaya held her breath, her mind wary of his attention. She wanted to know what he was up to. "As much as you'd love that-no. I'm leaving in another ten minutes. You see, you aren't the only one in the world with a car."

"Who's coming to pick you up?"

"A guy. Not a jerk like you. Quiet polite. And good looking."

He lifted his brows. "Let me guess... Neil?"

"Wrong," she said, folding her arms as he got closer.

"Shanaya, I'm too distracted by you to think of another guy right now," Dhruv confessed, his voice lowered to a whisper, audible only to her ears.

She wanted to scream ‘liar’ to his face but she held back. His hand reached up to her face and he stroked a thumb down her cheek. Despite not wanting to, her eyes lowered at the proximity, settling on his lips. His eyes were dangerous to look at up that close. They held the ability to persuade anyone to do anything. Even someone like her.

He leaned down closer to her face but before their lips sealed, Shanaya pushed him away.

"No," Shanaya objected, earning a frown from him. "Whatever happened last night was great. But it won't happen again. I don't want it to happen again."

Dhruv smirked at her, but he moved away. "You're a bad liar."

"Does it even matter? We probably won't see each other again for months, years perhaps."

Dhruv gave her a look like he'd seen an alien but then his brows furrowed and he chuckled. "You really don't know, do you? Oh, and here I thought he told you. I thought that was why you refused to ask me the reason why I returned. Because you knew. But you don't. I'm not going back to America. Not soon. But that's a different thing altogether."

"Who are you talking about?"

He snickered, running his hand through his hair. "You'll find out. In some time I hope." He winked.

"No. You'll tell me right now," Her voice turned out calm but even she sensed herself losing it.

"Will I? Hmm."

‘Tell me,’ She wanted to yell in the tone she used on her employees but controlled the urge somehow. ‘Tell me how you’re still smiling while talking to Anjali when I assumed you had left everyone in our country behind!’

It was true. No one had heard from Dhruv. Not for the past eight years. At least none of the people she knew he was close to back then. Whatever they had heard about him came from headlines. Every now and then he managed to brace the news with some new contribution he made to the tech world.

"Dhruv, I'll... " Shanaya's voice trailed off when the doorbell rang but as she walked towards the sound, all she thought of was how he had succeeded. Ultimately, he had her begging for the answer. At least, in her mind.

It slipped Shanaya's mind that she was wearing nothing but an oversized T-shirt. She slid the door wide open, allowing Shaheer who stood outside to take a good look at her. The calm over his face vanished in an instant. His cheeks blushed pink and he lifted his eyebrows in embarassment, clearing his throat at the same time. "Oh," Shanaya said to herself, realising what had happened and in a haste almost closed the door on his face. Luckily, he stepped behind on time. She sighed deeply and counted to three, letting her erratic heart go back to normal before slightly jerking the door open to peek out. "Did you get what I asked?" She said hurriedly and for a moment Shaheer's brows furrowed in confusion. "What? Oh, yes. Yes, here it is. Ms. Arora," He said and passed through the little gap a bag with her clothes. Shanaya grabbed it without another glance and turned around to find Dhruv looking at her with a smirk. "And who might that be?" He said, more to himself than to her and too

Kabir shrugged and the smile slipped away, getting replaced by a serious look. His gray eyes stared at her with curiosity. "But seriously, Shan, where were you last night? I called you like a hundred times." She ran her fingers through her wet hair strands as the light buzzing of the machine continued. Pretending to not hear his question, she said looking at herself in the full view mirror, "Do you think it's okay for you to be in my room while I'm not here? And even when I am. With me. Alone?" "Let's not pretend like I didn't spend half of my teen years here," He shook his head as his eyes went over the room, quickly examining it. Picking up a pillow, he flipped it and then stuffed it behind his head, relaxing even more. "You're not scared of what Dadi has to say?" His eyes flickered away from her but a small smile appeared on his clean shaven face. "She stopped doubting me a while ago. Precisely on the day I got married to Noor. Ahail, was a hero. Her saviour. Her protector. Or at least, he had been; once upon a time before the whole Arora family descended into the ruins. Shanaya had been a notorious teenager. With her heart on her sleeve and her mind in her mouth, trouble was always lurking around, and she attracted it like a magnet—picking fights with girls and boys all the same. But Ahail was there. He was always there to clean up her messes. He'd beat up guys and flirt with girls until they thought no more evil of his little sister. Ahail was the perfect guy—tall, handsome and smart. They were both blessed with a good combination of their parents' genes but while Shanaya struggled with Math, he excelled. With the ability to make friends at just the wave of his hand, he was a charmer. He sang sometimes and played music at pleas of girls. He was the life of every party he attended. Such was the Ahail she knew and loved and admired. The one she was about to meet, however, was a completely different person

"He'll be here in a minute," Shanaya said in an instant, earning a head tilt and a long gaze from her granny before the old woman settled on the seat as the head of the family. Her brother entered moments later, displaying a freshly shaved jaw and carried out the walk of shame with his head low before sitting down. "Now that everyone's here," Suhala began with a small but genuine smile, "I'd like to introduce everyone to Raunak Mehta." So the trouble's named Raunak this time, Shanaya thought as she examined his face carefully. He smiled at her grandmother's words but the moment his gaze met Shanaya's he blushed and looked away. The latter continued to glare. "Ms Chahal is here with her with daughter too," She added with a forced smile. "Mithila, right?""Mridula, Dadi." The girl corrected politely and lowered her head, smiling. "Yes, yes." Shanaya resisted the urge to roll her eyes and sighed instead, failing to maintain a fake smile. When Monday morning dawned, Shanaya could not be more eager to leave her family house. She had always expected it to be a haven; a place to relax after a long week—to heal and recover from the burnout, but it had never felt that way. Going to her family house felt more like an obligation—a duty she was committed to doing. She did that every weekend. Sometimes, she felt guilty for perceiving like checking up on her grandmother and Ahail, were merely tasks on her to-do list. Shanaya sneaked out as always, tiptoeing to the front door. It was still dark outside, but the chirping of birds had replaced the quietness of the night. She needed some time to restore her sanity before reaching her workplace. She was about to turn the doorknob when someone cleared their throat behind her, causing her to freeze in her place. She sighed, feeling like a thief caught red-handed. "One day you'll regret not saying goodbye before leaving," Suhala's throaty voice fell on her ears. Her grandmother was

Despite its beauty, Shanaya frowned as she picked up the bracelet and examined its delicate design. To the touch, it was cool, sending tiny shivers through her fingers. Dhruv's smirking face flashed through her mind and she tried her best not to recall fragments of the night they spent together. What was all of this supposed to mean? What was he up to? Why did he suddenly choose to flood her with his attention after ghosting her for the last eight years? Dhruv was the last person she wanted on her mind that morning, but he was utterly unsettling like a wine stain on her conscience. Shanaya placed the ruby and gold bracelet back in the box with equal care and shut it close. “What an idiot,” she whispered to herself, remembering their conversation. Well, the next time I'll bring you roses carved out of gold. How about you never bring me any flowers? Of gold or otherwise. Dhruv had done just what she had told him not to. That was expected of him. It annoyed Shanaya but she found

[DHRUV]When his eyes opened, Dhruv feared he had slept through the afternoon. The watch on his wrist, however, displayed the time to be ten o’clock. He closed his eyes, breathing in deeply before deciding to begin his day. His body was still trying to adapt to the change. It took most of the night to fall asleep, causing him to wake up much later than he intended to. Alarms had never worked for him, so he did not bother setting them up now either. Standing up on his feet, he wandered around, taking in the emptiness of his room. A bed and a wardrobe were the only pieces of furniture inside. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done, he noted to himself. Dhruv had his old friends from Mumbai hunt for some bungalows while he was still wrapping things up in the U.S. The one he had ended up buying was perfect for him—just as he had pictured. However, everything had been done in haste and there was no housewarming ceremony which aggravated his mother, who was mad in the first place be

Sucking in a deep breath, Shanaya took another peek out the window. Dhruv still stood leaning against his car, dashing in a white shirt. While it made no sense to her, Dhruv wearing white clothes was a sight that had always appealed to her. She recalled a white hoodie he once owned that had ended up being hers. He occasionally looked up toward her window, but she was sure he couldn’t see her. Even though he had been standing there for fifteen minutes, Shanaya still wanted to keep him waiting. She removed the glistening bracelet from her wrist and placed it back into the velvet box. A moment later, Shaheer knocked on her cabin door. “Ms. Arora, I’m leaving for lunch. Are you sure you won’t be joining us today?” he asked solemnly, his hands clasped together. “Absolutely,” she replied without missing a beat, grabbed her handbag, and walked around the oval table. Turning around briefly, she glanced across the room. “Ah, Shaheer. Could you please find a nice vase to place those tu

When she turned around to see Kirti’s face, she found amusement on it—not confusion like she had expected. “Is this really happening right now, Kirti? Please pinch me!” she said hurriedly, her voice filled with panic. Kirti laughed in response, instead urging her, “Go inside. I bet he needs you by his side.” “He’s not just about to do what he said he was going to,” Shanaya mumbled more to herself than to Kirti, gently patting her chest that stirred in anticipation. “Please, tell me.” His sister inched closer, a look of understanding crossing her eyes. “Dhruv hasn’t mentioned it to you, but he has been secretly visiting Dadi ever since she got sick. Actually, she was the one who requested him to meet her.” “But why would she do that?” “She… she felt sorry an

Ahail cleared his throat, adjusting the tie around his neck before he persuaded himself to press the doorbell. The moment was exhilarating. The door opened with a jerk and Noor’s face fell as she spotted him. The curious look faded away into a frown before she quickly replaced it with a difficult smile. He knew her enough to see right through it. Right then, as the moment stood silent, he debated with himself. He could walk away, ending the conversation before it started. Noor was already uncomfortable, he could see that. But the annoying voice inside his mind—that had been bothering him for days—urged him to stay put. He had to do this. He had to do it for Shanaya. If fate had favoured him, Shanaya would not exist. And if Suhala had indeed rejected him, it would have likely ruined their friendship. Shanaya was more baffled than sorry for the old man. Not once had she sensed even the hint of unrequited love from Nazir despite seeing her grandmother with him for several years. He did a great job hiding his feelings, and she could only imagine how heavy it weighed on him. She realised how lucky she was to get a second chance with Dhruv. She wanted to continue being in his arms, his touch bringing her the comfort that she craved. But then when Dhruv told her that at the end of the day, she’ll be back in his arms, she smirked at her and laughed it off. She teased him, making him look like a lovesick person. Once more, the world was abuzz with discussions about them. The rumors surrounding their relationship intensified, particularly when Anjali confidently appeared in public with her high school sweetheart and declared their engagement. After a continuous spell of rain that had almost got Shanaya worried, the sky had cleared. ‘Everything is fine,’ she told herself. ‘I’m happy.’ But that was the way to jinx it—admitting that things were good. And then her brain did all it could to dampen her mood. This time, however, Raunak was there to distract her. “Alright, one more step… Ah, that’s great.
