Byron felt partly responsible for breaking the news. Maybe Pam was right about not telling Mike since it seemed like the news of the pregnancy did make him more nervous. On the other hand, maybe if she had told him sooner, it wouldn't have caused so much excitement right before they were about to say their vows.

He wasn't sure if the bride was already at the church, so he called Emily. It turned out they were all still at Pam's house getting ready, so he said he would meet them over there.

"Have you decided to become a bridesmaid instead?" Emily teased.

"Yeah, something like that. I always thought I'd make a good bridesmaid."

He couldn't let her know that he spilled the beans. Somehow, he would have to get Pam alone without anyone knowing what was going on.

The house was bustling with people, and Pam's mother greeted Byron as he entered.

"Come in! The ladies are right upstairs," she said.

As Byron climbed the stairs, he heard women's voices and a lot of giggling. One of the voic

The wedding was beautiful, and Emily spent the next morning lazing around the house since the party had gone late into the evening. She was trying to teach her new puppy different commands, though the training devolved into a game of tug-of-war with a chew toy when Byron finally woke up and joined them in the living room. He was even more groggy than she was."No more parties for a while..." he said, settling down on the couch and sipping a cup of espresso."What happened to your healthy morning smoothies?" Emily asked."I need this... There was way too much alcohol last night. I guess I'm getting old."Emily grinned. If he was getting old, he didn't look it with his smooth, glowing skin. "Are you also going to do your workout on the couch?" "Yeah, why not?"He picked up a tablet instead and started going through the financial news and answering emails."What the hell..." he suddenly pronounced.Emily looked up to see the familiar frown lines cross his face as he examined so

They met up in a cafe a block away from the tabloid's main office. Emily finally got a closer look at Fred, a middle-aged man with a greying moustache. Byron only called on him for the most covert operations, and now Fred was excited at the prospect of going undercover. "So, I was abducted by aliens?" Fred clarified. "What happened then? How did I escape?""I don't know." Emily shrugged. "Maybe you found their fatal weakness: they're afraid of water.""That's the wicked witch," Fred said. "Okay, how about they let you go so they can keep observing you?" Emily suggested."The main thing is, try to talk to Megan DeLorme," Byron said. "Find out what she's up to."They watched from the second story of the cafe as Fred crossed the street and entered the office building."There he goes..." Byron said, "I hope he doesn't bungle it this time."They exchanged amused looks."It seems like only yesterday I asked Fred to follow you and keep you safe," Byron said. "But I'm glad we don't

Emily was shocked, not only by seeing Christine again, but also by what she was trying to imply."We didn't cost you your job twice," Emily said. Byron looked at the former journalist with contempt. "I admit, the first time was all me, and I'm proud of it. But don't blame us for losing your job a second time."This was an exclusive event with luxurious decor and the most delicious foods. Emily enjoyed them to a certain extent as she got to attend a few, but sometimes the people at these events were not as high-class as the tone of the event seemed to imply. Christine seemed to worm her way into these things for the sake of appearing elegant and high-faluting. "I don't know how you did it," Christine hissed venomously, "but I'm sure it was you. My magazine got completely shut down.""Maybe it deserves to be shut down for publishing lies," Byron retorted."Let's not get sucked into another mess," Emily said, trying to pull him away."You're right," Byron said, "Nice seeing you,

Emily felt pleasantly dreamy the next morning at breakfast."Well, it's confirmed," Byron said, "My mom admitted to destroying Christine's tabloid. She reported it for health code violations because of how dirty the office was, and they hadn't paid their rent, so it was all too easy to take them down.""Huh," Emily said."Your eyes are unfocused," Byron remarked, "What are you thinking about?""Last night was fun..." she said. Her whole body felt soft and pliable after everything they did the night before and well-rested after sleep. "Reminiscing about it already?" he asked."I guess so.""Why don't we do something to bring it back to the present?" he suggested."Now?" she said, surprised, "Okay.""I don't want us to ever reminisce about the good old days," Byron said, "Some couples give up too easily and lose their passion.""I don't think we're there at all," Emily said."Not if I can help it." Byron lifted her up with ease and placed her on the couch. "Now, what is it th

Emily's clothing company was doing really well. She got a bigger space for her boutique, and her designs were sold in several department stores around the country. She didn't want to tell Byron too much about it yet since he was suffering from the downturn of the economy and the artificial lowering of his stock thanks to Christine's machinations. He got home much later than Emily did, but even in the evenings he would be on his phone talking to brokers and financial advisors. The door to his home office was left half-open, and Emily peeked in after getting a midnight snack. Byron was on the phone, and he sounded desperate."I've got to have some capital hidden away somewhere," he was saying into the phone, which he clutched with a white-knuckled grip. "You already emptied those accounts? All of them? Damn!"Emily couldn't hear what was being said on the other side, but it was clearly not good."We could get another loan from the bank..." Byron was saying. "Well, keep trying. Thank

Emily couldn't stand the thought of Byron losing the business empire he had worked so hard to create and possibly sinking into another depressive bout. He was doing remarkably well and seemed well-balanced, considering the destructive forces working against him. But she was going to make sure he didn't lose his companies. Her meetings with Byron's financial advisors went very well, and she was soon ready to introduce Byron to her new plan. When Byron walked into the office of Julian Markle, his financial advisor, Emily was there waiting for him. Byron looked surprised but happy to see her."I knew you couldn't stay away from helping with my finances," he said, greeting her with a kiss."There's a plan I've been discussing with your financial advisors," Emily said. "They think it's quite reasonable."Byron looked amused. "Are you plotting to take over my company, Miss Danzi?""You may be closer to the truth than you realize," Emily said. As spring blossomed into summer, Emily hoped to spend more time with her boyfriend, but all he seemed to think about was work.Merging their two companies had done the trick. The financial crisis was mostly behind him, but he couldn't relax. He was up at all hours, and then wake up at six in the morning and head to work again, his handsome face marred by under-eye puffiness. This had to stop. When they had dinner, one of the few times of the day when Byron was not buried in work, she brought up the issue."Are there some other financial troubles I don't know about?" she asked."Huh?" he said, his mind obviously not focused on the present."I read the reports," Emily said, "I read the business news even though it's really boring. Everything says we're doing well. Why are you working so hard?""I'm not," he objected, "this is how much I normally work."Emily gave him a look to indicate he wasn't fooling anyone. Byron was in the middle of trying to assess the value of his slowly growing stock portfolio when he was interrupted by the doorbell. He was expecting a courier from the office, but it was his old friend, Nathan."Hey, come in," Byron said crustily."You're being turtle-y again," Nathan stated, making himself comfortable on the living room couch. "You won't take my calls, and you barely reply to my texts.""Maybe your texts with so-called funny memes can wait while I make life and death business decisions?" Byron said."Ouch. Are you saying my texts are not funny?""I'm just a little busy.""Not too busy to host a whole pack of wild hounds," Nathan said, patting the two dogs who came over to sniff him."I don't remember the last time I walked my own dogs," Byron said. "I know you're putting your business empire back in order and all that," Nathan said, pouring himself a drink, "but surely by now you're back on solid ground?""I believe I am," Byron agreed. Emily felt such a strong current of desire running throughout her frame. It was always the most overwhelming sensation, being engulfed in the torrent of his kisses. It was one of those times when she was reminded how fierce and powerful her love for him really was. Sometimes day-to-day life interfered and made her forget that there was a man by her side who would do anything for her. When he showed how much he loved her, whether it was with grand gestures and romantic trips or simply the way he kissed her, it felt like the rebirth of a love that was too beautiful for words.Holding him in her arms and knowing how much he desired her nearly made her faint every time. It enchanted every single cell of her being, making the rest of the world a mere blur compared to the hot passion coursing through her body."I love you," she murmured as they rested in the sumptuous bed. "Thanks for always being there for me.""You don't have to thank me," he said, gazing back at her with a look fi

A few days later, Emily woke up to a grey and rainy day, but she was eager to get out of bed. It was the day of their trip. Byron was already up, pulling a tight t-shirt over his muscular torso. He looked way too awake for the earliness of the hour."Today's dress code: motorcycle gear," he said, eyes shining eagerly."It's a road trip?" Emily exclaimed."Yes indeed!"They could have flown anywhere in the world on their private jet, but for some reason Emily was more excited about a trip to the nearby mountains, just like they had always done. It reminded her of the early days of their relationship when they swiftly fell in love, and she had fallen in love with everything about this landscape too. And in some ways, not that much had changed."It's going to be a rugged journey," Byron said, "but don't worry, I've prepared some amenities at our destination.""What is that supposed to mean?" she asked."You don't need to pack too much stuff, just your basic clothes."They left t

Byron poured a lot of funds into the construction of the wave pool, and a few months later, it was built and ready for use.The building looked sleek and contemporary on the outside, while inside it was a warm oasis away from the autumn chill.Mandy swam and frolicked in the waves with her friends, stopping only to sip a bit of juice, then she was back in the water for more splashing. The high ceiling allowed natural light to come in through its numerous skylights, giving the space the ambience of a warm beach. The wave pool was definitely a hit. Emily and Byron watched the kids, lounging on deck chairs by the water."It's not quite as relaxing as a real beach, but it'll do," Byron said as the echoes of children's voices bounced around the vast space. Ripples of sunlight reflected off the water and played over his face."The kids don't seem to care if it's relaxing or not," Emily said, observing them race each other in the waves. "But as long as they're happy…""Do you think Man

"Can I do it when I'm six?" Mandy asked, not letting go of the idea of being on television."No," Emily said firmly."Can I do it when I'm seven?""No.""Ten?""Maybe." Emily hoped the whole discussion would be forgotten after that many years. She never wanted her child on a so-called talent show which was probably rigged anyway.Luckily, Mandy was distracted by her friend, and the two girls went to play outside."She's so talented," Katie said, "You should take her to a music academy. I'll bet she's going to be a sensation."Emily shook her head. "She's way too young. Please don't get excited. I know it seems like showing her talent to the world is a good thing, but too many child stars have started out on brilliant careers only to burn out as teenagers. I definitely don't want that for Mandy.""You're right, Talent Quest is a bit of a freak show," Katie said, "but don't you want her to at least learn as much as she can to reach her full potential?""She's got all the time i

Byron took a long breath. "Okay, don't be mad at me but… I bought Charmers. And now every single branch of Charmers will carry your brand of clothing.""Byron, you promised me you wouldn't do that!" Emily was so disappointed she was hardly even tempted by the creamy pasta."I promised I wouldn't destroy them," he said, a sly smile playing about his lips, "and I don't intend to. I've even kept Simone around, though in a slightly less senior role. She couldn't be induced to resign. The woman is very stubborn, but I know you don't like us to make enemies…""So you took over the company she was running, and you don't think she'd be mad?""Not as mad as I was when you told me she dropped your products," Byron retorted, "But believe it or not she's actually okay with the takeover. Charmers were struggling financially anyway. Believe me, I did them a favor.""Well you didn't do me a favor," Emily retorted. "I didn't want you to get involved.""But—""I'm capable of solving my own probl

"I pet a big white dog!" Mandy announced when they got home. The dogs spun around the new arrivals in a furry whirlwind, and Emily was relieved to be with her four-legged friends. She was glad she hadn't brought them to work that day to be despised by Simone."That's good," Byron said, greeting Mandy and Emily with kisses."I was not so lucky," Emily said."Mommy didn't have time to play with doggie," Mandy said sadly."And on top of that, I lost a really big client…" Emily added. She took off her shoes and collapsed on the living room couch."Lady said the 'f word'," Mandy recalled. Byron raised his eyebrows. "I know I'm not allowed to say it," Mandy continued, "but she didn't know that.""What the heck happened over there?" Byron asked."Ugh! I can't even go into right now," Emily lay back on the couch and closed her eyes, trying to shut out the stress of the day. Emily was in a playful mood the next morning. She didn't want to get out of bed, even though she had an important meeting. The date night had ended in a rather passionate episode. Mandy was already asleep by the time they got back home, and they made the most of their time. It was not exactly rare for them to have alone time, but maybe it didn't happen as often as before."You're very giggly," Byron noted. "I thought you'd be tired after last night."He was a bit sleepy but didn't mind indulging her desires when she kissed his face and body all over."Thanks for helping me feel relaxed when I should be nervous," Emily said as she got up to get dressed. "Simone Cather is coming in for a meeting today. I've never worked with her before, but I hear she can be difficult. I'm going to bring Mandy with me to win her over with cuteness."Simone had just taken over leadership of Charmers, the biggest fashion retail store in the country. Emily was able to run some errands while Sylvia gave Mandy her first piano lesson. She was glad to have a bit of time to shop, and Sylvia insisted on not having anyone interfere in her tutelage anyway. Emily wondered how Sylvia would cope being left alone with her granddaughter. She had been out a couple of hours, and she hoped they hadn't killed each other.Contrary to her expectations, the house was quiet when she entered. Sylvia and Mandy were deep in conversation over tea and cookies."Mommy! Mommy!" Mandy ran over to greet her."How was your lesson?" Emily asked."I learned to play piano!""She did fairly well," Sylvia said. This sounded like high praise from someone who was more used to criticizing.Mandy sat down at the piano with very good posture to show Emily what she'd learned. She played Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. It was a simple piece that most kids started with, but Emily was amazed that Mandy played it so flawlessly. She kept up a steady rhythmic accompanimen

Unschooling was a little harder to commit to than Emily had imagined. She knew that there were plenty of learning opportunities for Mandy at home, but sometimes work demands, or just wanting a bit of time to herself made her reluctant to teach the kid.It was early September, and the unschooling had been going on for a week. Emily was working on her sketches in her home office while Mandy watched an educational program in the cinema room. It didn't seem like too much time had passed, but when Emily looked up from her sketch, the house felt unusually quiet. She went into the cinema room and saw that Mandy must have finished her program and dutifully turned the screen off. She was an amazingly responsible child in some respects."Mandy!" Emily called, "Where are you, Mandikins?"An eerie silence filled the large house. Emily checked all the rooms, but her daughter was nowhere to be found. Surely she wouldn't have gone outside all by herself? For a chilling moment, she thought the
