Emily was not supposed to go out by herself anymore, especially at night as part of the plan to avoid Josh. It was slightly annoying, but she felt so cared about and protected by her friend Pam that she didn't mind.

Pam picked her up to take her to the charity event. Emily wore the dress she made from her own design. It was one of her boldest creations, divided by a black line down the middle of her body with rose fabric on the left and mauve on the right. Her hair was pulled up into a high bun, and a couple of bright colored hairclips decorated both sides of her head. Pam wore a rose gold dress that complimented her toned figure and sun-tanned skin. Her dark blond hair cascaded down in loose waves.

The two ladies were completely set to conquer the gala.

As they entered the old-fashioned building of the hotel, the glamor of the place amazed them. From the classic decor and chandeliers to the fashionable guests, it was even more luxurious than Emily had expected.

The main hall was already filled with men in tuxedos and women in dazzling ball gowns. Emily tried to spot Byron, but he wasn't there.

The air smelled like perfume and... puppies? Emily was distracted from her thoughts of the man she had come to see by a small cordoned-off area where shelter volunteers played with five young mastiffs.

"You probably want to see those," Pam said, "while I'll get us drinks."

Emily rushed over to the puppy area, where a volunteer told her that they were available for adoption and guests were allowed to pet them. Sadly, she could not take any dogs home as most of the apartments in the city had a no-pet policy.

Emily reached into the enclosure, and the eager pups licked her hand with their warm tongues.

She loved the feel of their soft fur, and she was so distracted with the dogs that she hardly noticed Pam coming up with two glasses of wine.

"He's here," Pam sang out.

Emily's gaze moved to the far side of the hall, where Byron was walking around in a tuxedo with a glamorous blond woman on his arm.

"He's got someone with him. I don't want to ruin his date if I approach him now."

"That could be his aunt for all you know," Pam said.

"Looks a bit young to be his aunt..."

"Just go," Pam said in exasperation. "Lots of other people are talking to him, and so can you. Push that damn woman aside if you have to."

Pam was right, and Emily resolved to go. All she needed to do was apologize, even if he was dating someone else.

Emily walked through the crowd towards him, but suddenly the sound of a chiming bell filled the hall, and Byron walked up to the podium at the front of the room.

She couldn't very well speak to him now, so she returned to Pam, and they sat down at a table while Byron welcomed everyone to the event.

Emily had half-expected to be bored, but Byron's speech was so good! It was not some carefully-crafted bit of oratory. The words and ideas were simple and straightforward. She had a feeling that he meant everything he said. He truly cared about saving animals who had suffered abuse and neglect.

Emily felt like a little piece of her heart fluttered away from her body and up to the strikingly handsome man with the warm, enchanting voice.

"You're glowing," Pam whispered to her, giving her shoulder a light slap in pretend annoyance, "like a pregnant woman. Stop it!"

"It's a good speech," Emily whispered back.

"Right..."

Byron concluded by saying, "Animals not only bring joy into our lives but also teach us important lessons about love and forgiveness. They're innocent creatures who are quick to forgive and forget, living in the moment and enjoying life to the fullest."

Emily just hoped he would follow his own advice and find forgiveness for her.

After the speech ended, many of the guests got up to mingle.

"Now is your chance to talk to him," Pam said.

Byron had left the podium and was wandering among the crowd, but unfortunately that blond woman in a stunning red sheath dress was still with him.

"It'll be awkward," Emily said, "but I guess it's now or never."

"Don't be shy," Pam encouraged her, "Just go over there and say what you have to say."

"I'll never by shy again. I've made up my mind to be tough, like you." Emily lifted her fist in the air, even though it looked pretty small and non-threatening.

"I like this new attitude, girl," Pam said. "But you don't have to be like me. You've always been tough. You just didn't know it yet."

Byron was good at spotting people while keeping up a conversation with the guests immediately in front of him, and he saw Emily coming over even before she said anything. He would have recognized that face anywhere. He thought of her so many times ever since they met on the bridge, the night he came so close to ending his own life. It was almost as if she was there to save him. With her desperate plea for help, he had forgotten his own heartache. But he had believed this woman was too fragile and had too many problems of her own to become involved with him."Emily," he said, looking happy, but in a polite and composed way, "So good to see you here. Are you looking for a dog to adopt?"He offered his hand to shake, and Emily wondered if he was confused by her actions, first yelling at him, then coming here."No," she said, "though I love those puppies, I can't have any in my apartment. I came here to see you, actually. I just wanted to say I'm sorry for how I behaved.""You don't

Some of the guests were starting to leave as the evening drew to a close. Emily and Pam walked into the foyer of the hotel together, having enjoyed a lot of delicious wine and food.Suddenly, Emily heard someone calling her name. She turned around to see Byron walking quickly across the lobby towards her."Oh, here he comes," Pam whispered, "I'm going to leave you two alone. I'll just run to the ladies room."Emily suddenly felt shy because she could how strongly his attention was focused on her."I was hoping to speak to you again," he said, "I can't believe you're leaving already. I am really sorry about the other night. It was so stupid of me not to realize that you would be put off by a strange man appearing at your house.""Thanks," Emily said, "I really appreciate it. I should have known you were not someone like that.""I feel like a jerk," he said, ruffling his hair in a nervous gesture. "As you may have heard," Sylvia said, "Byron recently had a bad breakup. It really took him by surprise. I don't know for sure, but I have the feeling Nova was the woman he wanted to marry. Byron has always been a little bit depressive, but this was... really bad. He pretends like nothing is wrong, but I know..." There was a tearful note in the woman's voice, and Emily felt a rush of sympathy. "I know he's still not over it. He's so distressed.""I'm so sorry," Emily said. She thought back to Byron's sad looks. Was that because of Nova Summers? "It must be hard for you, not being able to help.""That's the thing," Sylvia said, "Maybe I can help. This might sound a little odd, but hear me out.""Okay..." "How would you like to date my son?""I would like to, but..." Emily sensed there was something more."I just need to be sure he's with someone who is not going to break his heart. You have to promise that you'll never break up with him. I can pay you. Emily got home around 11 to find her roommate Delsie was still up watching her favorite show, Tales of the Elf Kingdom. Emily flopped down on the couch next to her."Hey, looking good," Delsie said. This was refreshing, an actual compliment coming from Delsie. "You too!" Emily replied, admiring her roommate's sparkling eye shadow, "Did you go out somewhere?""Yeah," Delsie said, looking a bit sheepish. "I went on a date.""Nice!""It's still too early to tell," Delsie said coyly, "but I think we might have a connection."Emily felt fairly comfortable around her roommate again after what seemed like a period of underhanded cattiness. Maybe Delsie just needed to get back out into the dating game. As they watched the show, which focused on a love triangle between an elf princess and two of her admirers, Delsie commented, "I wish she would just pick one.""But it's part of the fun," Emily said, "not knowing who she's going to choose.""Don't you feel bad for those guys, though?"

Just like the romantic part of the plan turned out to be more complicated than expected, so did the career part.Later that day, Emily tried to look for more jobs. She had searched through hundreds of listings and applied to several jobs in the last week, but she had still not received any requests for interviews. Maybe she had underestimated the competition. This was a big city with many bright young designers who either had to be exceptional or know the right people to get a job.Emily was writing yet another cover letter when her phone rang. She hoped it was a potential employer but didn't feel too disappointed when she saw it was Byron Pomeroy. Her lips curved into a playful smile as she answered the phone. Byron's voice was seductively low and smooth. "Did you have a good sleep?" he asked. It was not going to be easy to be friends with him when he talked like that. "How could I not with a cute Great Dane wishing me 'good night'?" she said."If you want to meet him in per

Emily spotted her 'friend date' at once when the limo pulled into the parking lot. Byron stood out from the crowd of weekend joggers and families with his tall, imposing figure. The giant dog he was holding on a leash also added a majestic touch to his appearance.Just as she climbed out of the limo, a drizzle began to spray, darkening the concrete and covering the grass with gleaming drops. "Why is it always raining when we meet?" she said to Byron. He hardly seemed to notice the weather as he stood there consuming her with his eyes. It was like he had never seen her before. Finally, he realized he was staring, and he reduced the intense wattage of his gaze."It always rains in this city," he said, "but if you're tired of the rain, we could sail down to San Diego.""Ha ha, that's okay," she replied. He was certainly good at tempting her with fine offers. "I'm fine with a walk in the park. And who is this fine gentleman?"Emily offered her hand for the dog to sniff."This is my

How can you deny it?""You're not ready for a relationship, Byron.""What makes you say that?" he asked, looking genuinely confused.Emily was not sure if she should be honest with him about her reasons, but she didn't want him to know how much she knew about his depression. If she revealed that, she would have to reaveal that she had spoken to his mother, and it was best to let that sleeping dog lie."Can you just trust me on this?" she asked, "I can't explain it right now, but I know we should be friends." Emily felt such a strong current of desire running throughout her frame. It was always the most overwhelming sensation, being engulfed in the torrent of his kisses. It was one of those times when she was reminded how fierce and powerful her love for him really was. Sometimes day-to-day life interfered and made her forget that there was a man by her side who would do anything for her. When he showed how much he loved her, whether it was with grand gestures and romantic trips or simply the way he kissed her, it felt like the rebirth of a love that was too beautiful for words.Holding him in her arms and knowing how much he desired her nearly made her faint every time. It enchanted every single cell of her being, making the rest of the world a mere blur compared to the hot passion coursing through her body."I love you," she murmured as they rested in the sumptuous bed. "Thanks for always being there for me.""You don't have to thank me," he said, gazing back at her with a look fi

A few days later, Emily woke up to a grey and rainy day, but she was eager to get out of bed. It was the day of their trip. Byron was already up, pulling a tight t-shirt over his muscular torso. He looked way too awake for the earliness of the hour."Today's dress code: motorcycle gear," he said, eyes shining eagerly."It's a road trip?" Emily exclaimed."Yes indeed!"They could have flown anywhere in the world on their private jet, but for some reason Emily was more excited about a trip to the nearby mountains, just like they had always done. It reminded her of the early days of their relationship when they swiftly fell in love, and she had fallen in love with everything about this landscape too. And in some ways, not that much had changed."It's going to be a rugged journey," Byron said, "but don't worry, I've prepared some amenities at our destination.""What is that supposed to mean?" she asked."You don't need to pack too much stuff, just your basic clothes."They left t

Byron poured a lot of funds into the construction of the wave pool, and a few months later, it was built and ready for use.The building looked sleek and contemporary on the outside, while inside it was a warm oasis away from the autumn chill.Mandy swam and frolicked in the waves with her friends, stopping only to sip a bit of juice, then she was back in the water for more splashing. The high ceiling allowed natural light to come in through its numerous skylights, giving the space the ambience of a warm beach. The wave pool was definitely a hit. Emily and Byron watched the kids, lounging on deck chairs by the water."It's not quite as relaxing as a real beach, but it'll do," Byron said as the echoes of children's voices bounced around the vast space. Ripples of sunlight reflected off the water and played over his face."The kids don't seem to care if it's relaxing or not," Emily said, observing them race each other in the waves. "But as long as they're happy…""Do you think Man

"Can I do it when I'm six?" Mandy asked, not letting go of the idea of being on television."No," Emily said firmly."Can I do it when I'm seven?""No.""Ten?""Maybe." Emily hoped the whole discussion would be forgotten after that many years. She never wanted her child on a so-called talent show which was probably rigged anyway.Luckily, Mandy was distracted by her friend, and the two girls went to play outside."She's so talented," Katie said, "You should take her to a music academy. I'll bet she's going to be a sensation."Emily shook her head. "She's way too young. Please don't get excited. I know it seems like showing her talent to the world is a good thing, but too many child stars have started out on brilliant careers only to burn out as teenagers. I definitely don't want that for Mandy.""You're right, Talent Quest is a bit of a freak show," Katie said, "but don't you want her to at least learn as much as she can to reach her full potential?""She's got all the time i

Emily was so disappointed she was hardly even tempted by the creamy pasta."I promised I wouldn't destroy them," he said, a sly smile playing about his lips, "and I don't intend to. I've even kept Simone around, though in a slightly less senior role. She couldn't be induced to resign. The woman is very stubborn, but I know you don't like us to make enemies…""So you took over the company she was running, and you don't think she'd be mad?""Not as mad as I was when you told me she dropped your products," Byron retorted, "But believe it or not she's actually okay with the takeover. Charmers were struggling financially anyway. Believe me, I did them a favor.""Well you didn't do me a favor," Emily retorted. "I didn't want you to get involved.""But—""I'm capable of solving my own probl

She was glad she hadn't brought them to work that day to be despised by Simone."That's good," Byron said, greeting Mandy and Emily with kisses."I was not so lucky," Emily said."Mommy didn't have time to play with doggie," Mandy said sadly."And on top of that, I lost a really big client…" Emily added. She took off her shoes and collapsed on the living room couch."Lady said the 'f word'," Mandy recalled. Byron raised his eyebrows. "I know I'm not allowed to say it," Mandy continued, "but she didn't know that.""What the heck happened over there?" Byron asked."Ugh! Emily was in a playful mood the next morning. She didn't want to get out of bed, even though she had an important meeting. The date night had ended in a rather passionate episode. Mandy was already asleep by the time they got back home, and they made the most of their time. It was not exactly rare for them to have alone time, but maybe it didn't happen as often as before."You're very giggly," Byron noted. "I thought you'd be tired after last night."He was a bit sleepy but didn't mind indulging her desires when she kissed his face and body all over."Thanks for helping me feel relaxed when I should be nervous," Emily said as she got up to get dressed. "Simone Cather is coming in for a meeting today. I've never worked with her before, but I hear she can be difficult. I'm going to bring Mandy with me to win her over with cuteness."Simone had just taken over leadership of Charmers, the biggest fashion retail store in the country. Emily was able to run some errands while Sylvia gave Mandy her first piano lesson. She was glad to have a bit of time to shop, and Sylvia insisted on not having anyone interfere in her tutelage anyway. Emily wondered how Sylvia would cope being left alone with her granddaughter. She had been out a couple of hours, and she hoped they hadn't killed each other.Contrary to her expectations, the house was quiet when she entered. Sylvia and Mandy were deep in conversation over tea and cookies."Mommy! Mommy!" Mandy ran over to greet her."How was your lesson?" Emily asked."I learned to play piano!""She did fairly well," Sylvia said. This sounded like high praise from someone who was more used to criticizing.Mandy sat down at the piano with very good posture to show Emily what she'd learned. She played Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. It was a simple piece that most kids started with, but Emily was amazed that Mandy played it so flawlessly. She kept up a steady rhythmic accompanimen

Unschooling was a little harder to commit to than Emily had imagined. She knew that there were plenty of learning opportunities for Mandy at home, but sometimes work demands, or just wanting a bit of time to herself made her reluctant to teach the kid.It was early September, and the unschooling had been going on for a week. Emily was working on her sketches in her home office while Mandy watched an educational program in the cinema room. It didn't seem like too much time had passed, but when Emily looked up from her sketch, the house felt unusually quiet. She went into the cinema room and saw that Mandy must have finished her program and dutifully turned the screen off. She was an amazingly responsible child in some respects."Mandy!" Emily called, "Where are you, Mandikins?"An eerie silence filled the large house. Emily checked all the rooms, but her daughter was nowhere to be found. Surely she wouldn't have gone outside all by herself? For a chilling moment, she thought the
