As Harriett drove off with the twins, it was finally just Evelyn and Damien that were left at the parking lot. Getting up from his knees, Damien finally remembered that he wasn’t alone and that Evelyn had been there all along. “Evel-” “We’ll talk about it later. Your parents are waiting.” Evelyn said with a straight face and walked towards the front door of the mansion. “Welcome. I didn’t expect you guys to be this late.” Stacy forced a smile out as she reluctantly gave Evelyn a side hug. “We had a small situation.” Damien answered and Stacy immediately understood that they must have bumped into Harriett and the twins. That made her feel happy as she knew that her son must have fallen at Harriet’s feet in front of Evelyn once again. Judging from the scowl on Evelyn’s baked face, she wasn’t wrong. “Errm.. thank you for inviting me over, mother. I can call you that, right? I mean, we’re about to be family so..” She laughed, pretending to like or care about Damien’s family. All the
Harriet dropped the twins off at the kindergarten before driving to work. All through the working hours, she found herself unable to focus as her thoughts kept drifting to a certain ex-husband of hers and his new fiancé. “Miss Edwards?” Collin tapped the door softly for the umpteenth time until he was finally able to get her attention. “Collin. What is it?” She cleared her throat and readjusted her posture, wondering if he had been there for a long time. She hated how much she had been zoning out at work. “You can call it a day, Miss. I already cleared your schedule for the afternoon and evening so, you can go home. You don’t really look so good.” Collin said genuinely as he watched her tired eyes stare at him. He had been watching her since she arrived and without anyone telling him, he knew that she won’t be able to work properly as she seemed to have a lot on her mind. Leaving the office early wasn’t going to affect her either as she had already taken care of most of the week’s
As Damien walked out of the company and headed to his car, his phone rang. A groan left his lips when he saw who was on the phone but he didn’t have a choice so, he reluctantly picked up the phone. “What is it, Evelyn?” He said as he connected his phone to his airpod with a frown as he ignited the car and begun driving to his house. “Damien..” Evelyn’s voice was low as though she had been crying. Damien didn’t care about her one bit but he wasn’t an animal and he certainly wasn’t raised to ignore people in need. “Is everything alright with you?” He asked when he heard a sniff, confirming his suspicion. Knowing Evelyn, he wouldn’t be surprised if this was a pretense. “I just got a call from mum… Dad has..” She started but another buzzed through his phone and Damien’s heart raced when he saw that it was Harriett who was calling. It felt unreal as she had never called him since the divorce. He was always the one reaching out to her. Without wasting much time, Damien quickly ended Eve
“She was with children. I suggest we kill them if we don’t want any problems. What do you say?” The man said over the phone.“What?” Evelyn screamed, pulling her hair harshly out of annoyance. “Are you stupid or you’re just trying to ruin me?” She groaned. Evelyn wasn’t stupid. She knew how much Damien cherished his children and if news reaches him about their disappearance, he would go to the ends of the earth to find them. As far as she was concerned, this man has made a big mistake by taking the kids with him.“I couldn’t kidnap the woman and leave the children, that’ll be fucking suspicious! They’ll instantly know that whoever did it was only after Harriett.” He explained, trying to bail himself out of the situation.“You should have been careful! How on earth will you kidnap her on her back from a kindergarten and think that she wouldn’t be with children? What are you, an idiot?” She complained angrily. One thing Evelyn knew so well about Damien was that he doesn’t jok
Harriet’s eyes fluttered open, preparing to be with met with a bright light. Instead, she is welcomed by thick darkness. Her only source of light was from a small window which was doing nothing to help the situation in the room. As she looked around, her memories finally came back to her. “My children.” Was the only words that left her lips as she crawled around the tiny room, her knees coming in contact with the cold concrete floor. She was sure her knees would be bruised after but she didn’t care. All she wanted was to be sure her children were okay. After crawling around the poorly lighted room for two minutes, she realized that her children were no where near her. Panic setting in, she quickly ran to the door and began banging loudly. “Help! Someone, please. Help!” She screamed for as much as her lungs could carry her, hitting the door with her strength. She continued for a few minutes before finally hearing footsteps from the other side. The sound of keys clanked in her ears
“Alright. I am calling from Brooklyn Street. We found a set of twins by the roadside who had a picture of you and a lady in their pockets, along with your phone number. Are these your children?” The lady asked and Damien felt his heart seize. “Daddy? Is that you?” Adrian’s tiny voice said through the phone and a tear immediately dropped from Damien’s eyes. He was happy that his children had been found but at the same time he was furious that they were abandoned on a street all by themselves. “Harriet. Is there a woman with them?” He asked immediately, crossing his fingers as he hoped that his ex-wife would also be with them. “No, sir. I found them sitting all by themselves around the corner. Please get here as fast as you can.” She replied. Damien’s happiness was cut short upon hearing that Harriett had still not been found. Now, he was completely sure that it was Evelyn’s doing because she knew how much he loved his children. Damien hit his steering wheel angrily and was about i
An hour later, Eric sent the coordinates he got from the details Damien sent to him earlier. It was already 5:30 in evening but that wasn’t going to stop Damien from going to rescue his wife. He planned on keeping to his word on not letting her spend a night there. “I’ll go first. You can come with the police.” He said to Eric over the phone who was also preparing himself for the rescue mission. Damien drove down town like a madman as he followed the GPS location on his car. In less than twenty minutes, the car slowed down as the GPS showed that he had arrived at his destination. When he looked outside, he realized that it was an abandoned building. How cliché! Taking his phone out of his pocket, he failed Eric’s number and on the second ring, he picked up. “What’s up?” Eric asked. “I’m in front of the building. Come quickly.” He said and ended the call without giving Eric a chance to reply. Accessing his surrounding, he noticed that the neighborhood was anything but safe with
Harriet ran with the nurses who were carrying Damien’s body out of the building, her legs moving swiftly even though her mind was completely blank. Uncontrollable tears kept falling from her eyes as she stared at Damien’s body which was already covered with blood. Even after doing her best to stop the bleeding at the building, it didn’t work as it kept gushing out nonstop. She was scared that he would die as he had been shot really close to his heart. She joined the nurses in the ambulance and for the first time in a long time, Harriett started muttering prayers to God. The nurses began the process of stopping the bleeding while they were still in the ambulance, driving at an impossible speed to the hospital. They knew that Damien Daniels was a VIP patient and his life had to be saved. Eric who had come with the police, was in a state of confusion. He didn’t know if it would be a wise idea to call his parents. But then, it’s Damien Daniels, one of the most popular men in New York. T
