JACKSON
~•~ As I led Paige away from Kimberly, I felt very bad, but that was the only right thing to do in that situation. Paige was the mother of my child and if things went according to plan, she would bear more of my children. I couldn’t watch her being hit by another woman, even if that woman was my ex-wife. Kimberly, on the other hand, was acting very strange. She used to be the sweetest woman ever, which was why I agreed to our marriage, but since I told her we should get divorced, she was acting like a different person. She had turned… vile. She was even willing to go through the trouble of lying that she was pregnant. That wasn’t the Kim I knew. We were married for three years and she never conceived. How come she was suddenly with a child after signing divorce papers? I didn’t know if she genuinely needed help from a professional at this point. “Jack, are you even listening to me?” Paige’s voice reached my ears. “Yeah, I’m listening.” I lied because Paige could be a handful. If she knew I was thinking about Kimberly, she would throw a fit. She hadn’t told me about my child all these years because she was mad at me. She was a very petty woman and I had to be careful not to set her off. “What if that bitch comes around again? I don’t want her to do anything bad to our Asher.” She sighed as though she was truly concerned Kim would go after our son. No matter how much Kim had changed, she would never do anything bad to a child. She loved children and wanted one so badly for years. “We should get a restraining order,” Paige suggested. I held back a sigh and looked out the window as the car zoomed past the streets. We were both in the backseat and our driver was taking us home. I had a full day of work today but Paige suggested I take a break and spend more time with Asher, as though I hadn’t been doing that already these past few weeks. Then again, I wouldn’t pass up any opportunity to hang out with him even if we now live in the same house. “Jack!” She whined when I didn’t respond. “We don’t have to go that far. It’s not that serious. She’s just hurt.” I knew how much Kimberly loved me and it would be hard on her to see me with another woman, so I couldn’t even blame her for what she was doing. “Yeah, but she’s acting crazy! Can’t you see the bruise on my face? She almost ruined my face!” I sucked on my bottom teeth, holding back my words. To be honest, Kimberly didn’t do anything wrong. She only retaliated because she was aggravated, but I couldn’t say that out loud to Paige. It would just make her angry and hate Kim even more. “We’ll go to the hospital so your face can be checked. As for Kimberly, you don’t have to worry about her. I’ll talk to her.” “No!” She opposed it immediately. “I don’t want you to see her. What if she seduces you and pins her pregnancy on you?” I doubted she was pregnant in the first place, but, “I won’t be seduced by her.” “Yeah, but she’s your ex and you guys must have residual feelings for each other. What if you take pity on her and bring her into the house? It would scar Asher for life. Do you want to treat our son like that?” Was this emotional blackmail? I wasn’t sure but I was certain it was a type of manipulation. I was done with Kimberly and I would stay true to my word. I was going to take care of Paige and Asher, just as I had told her when she first came to me to tell me about our son that she had hidden from me. I wouldn’t suddenly back out because I pitied Kimberly. I wasn’t that kind of man. “Fine, I won’t meet her, but you also have to promise not to involve the police in this. It will just create another scandal.” I offered, knowing with Paige, it was best to just meet in the middle. Since we were dating all those years ago, I knew it was a foolish idea to argue with Paige. She always won and I never liked arguing anyway. “Yeah, but if she harms Asher–“ “She won’t touch Asher,” I promised her. “Why do you keep defending her?” I sighed and stared at Paige. “I’m not defending her. She knows not to harm Asher because she’ll have me to deal with.” I said just to appease Paige. Yes, Kim would never intentionally cross me because she knew I had a lot more influence than her, but I also knew she would never harm a child. “I’m with you now. You’re all I’m focusing on. You and Asher. I’ve skipped several important meetings just to spend time with you guys.” She stared at me for a few seconds and finally gave in. “That’s true. I trust you.” “Good.” She leaned in to kiss me and I kissed her back gently as we arrived at our house. The driver drove inside the compound and as soon as he pulled over, Asher came running out of the house with Caro following behind him. Caro was loyal to Kimberly. She was even hired by her, but I didn’t have the heart to fire her, so I kept her. Besides, she was good at looking after kids and could watch Asher whenever Paige and I had an event to attend. We got out of the car at the same time but Asher ran over to Paige. “Mommy!” Paige opened up her arms, catching Asher as he threw himself at her. “Did you miss mommy?” She questioned, ruffling his hair while Asher threw his head back and laughed heartily. I watched them with a smile on my face. I was well aware that Paige wasn’t the best person. She had a lot of flaws but she was a good mother. I’d give her that. I didn’t know what the future held for us, but I was willing to find out, just as soon as I stopped thinking about Kimberly.KIMBERLY~•~FIVE YEARS LATERMy feet were hurting in my heels but as always, I faked a smile, walking into the building.“Hey, Kimberly.” One of my colleagues greeted me. I flashed a smile at them.“Hey, Kim.”“Kimberly.”“Good job, Kim.”“Another case under your belt, Kimberly, good job.”The praises were coming from left and right and they were almost overwhelming. My face almost hurt from smiling too much. My cheeks were flushed because of too many compliments. After a few years, I should have gotten used to it but it felt surreal every time I came out of the courtroom and went back to my office.“Well, if it isn’t the famous Attorney Watson who has never lost a case in the whole of her career. The first intern to get assigned a case only after three months.”I rolled my eyes as my boss, George, approached me. “Spare me, please.” I laughed as I fell in step with him and we approached the elevator. “The case was a tough one and I should be at home resting but as always, you can’t d
Chapter 11~•~KIMBERLY~•~It wasn’t the first time I was going with my boss on a business trip, but it was the first time I was nervous about it.I had a week to prepare myself, but nothing could prepare me for going back to New York. Well, nothing except fake confidence, that is. It was Amelia’s first time on a plane and she had been very scared but after the takeoff, she was more than excited to look out the window and started pouting when we had to exit the plane.I carried her on one arm while George dragged our suitcases behind me. I offered to carry mine but he didn’t let me and just told me to focus on the little devil in my arms.We walked for a bit before we finally spotted Reiya and as soon as Amelia saw her, she scrambled to get off me and ran towards her. “Aunt Ree!” She yelled out as they met halfway and Reiya carried her, spinning her around.“Did you miss me, baby?”Amelia nodded. I rolled my eyes. They had seen each other like three weeks ago. It wasn’t that serious.
JACKSON~•~“Kimberly?” I asked to be sure I was seeing right.I never thought I’d see her again. When I went looking for her, I was told she moved away from New York. Her parents didn’t know where she was and her best friend absolutely refused to reveal her location. I wanted to dig around but if she was taking extra measures to stay away from me, then it meant she didn’t want me in her life anymore so I didn’t bother.I had accepted the fact that our story had ended and we would never see each other anymore in this lifetime, but here she was, taking on my case.I had been speaking with Mr. Taylor all this while and he said one of his employees was going to join him on this trip. I never imagined it would be the woman who had been haunting my dreams for the past few years.Mr. Taylor looked between me and Kimberly. “You know each other?”That question broke Kimberly out of her trance and she quickly shook her head. “No, we’re meeting for the first time.” From her reaction, I could t
KIMBERLY ~•~As soon as the door to the restaurant closed behind me, I paused and exhaled.I wanted to pretend like I was okay. I wanted to act like his presence didn’t affect me. I wanted to lie to myself that I had completely moved on from him and I wasn’t affected by his presence but that was a big lie. I still hated him and I hated myself for having any form of emotion toward him.Apart from hating him, I also hated myself for feeling pity toward him. For him to find a lawyer in New York, it meant his usual lawyer had abandoned him. It made me wonder how bad his business was doing and how much trouble he was in and I despised it.When he held me, it felt too familiar. It felt like I had been scorched and having that reaction almost had me going violent. I never confronted him about what he did and I felt like doing it right at that moment. I wanted to slap him for thinking he still had the right to touch me, but I was a lawyer and I knew the charges that came with attacking someo
KIMBERLY ~•~“Are you sure I shouldn’t pack up the food and refrigerate them?” My maid asked me as she stared at me sympathetically while I sat at the dining table waiting for my husband to return. My eyes lingered on the wall clock as I responded. “Don’t worry about it, he’ll be back soon.” It was already past eleven and I had been waiting for him since nine o’clock.“You’ve said that for the past three nights, ma.” Caro reminded me, her voice laced with sympathy. Her words hurt but it was true. I couldn’t even scold her for it. She was only concerned about me.I took a deep breath, then another one, and another before responding. “You can go to bed, he promised to be back for dinner,” I told her, my voice cracking slightly. “I’ll wait a little bit longer.” “Okay, ma.” With that, she retreated to her room, leaving me alone with the variety of delicious food that we had spent our entire day preparing. Jackson and I didn’t have the perfect marriage because we didn’t get married
KIMBERLY ~•~When I realized that Jackson had made up his mind and nothing I said was going to make him change his mind. I wiped off my tears with the back of my hands and pulled out the paper from the envelope. He already had his signature on it. I placed the pen on the spot where I was meant to sign but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. My hand was shaking and my lip was wobbling. I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t.Confused about what to do, I tore the papers and squeezed them into a ball before getting up from the floor. “I’m not ready to get divorced, we will find a way to make it work.” Jackson's face twisted in disgust as he watched me throw the ball of paper at him. He caught it mid-air and stared at me in disbelief. “What did you just do?” He asked angrily. “You think this is going to change anything? I have more copies and the earlier you sign it, the better for you.” I needed to think of something else to do that would make him rethink his decision. I wasn’t ready to be divo
JACKSON ~•~After successfully getting Kimberly to sign the divorce papers, I went downstairs to grab a bite before heading back to the hotel where I left Paige and my son. It was hard letting Kimberly go but I had to do it because Paige was back and she requested I divorce Kimberly or else she would move back to Chicago. Paige and I were engaged even before Kimberly came into the picture, but we had to call it off because her parents requested she move to Chicago to manage their business. Paige and I were already having minor issues and we both agreed we couldn’t do long distance, so we had to go our separate ways. I was surprised when I ran into Paige some days back at the restaurant during lunch and was even more surprised when she revealed to me that she was pregnant when she left for Chicago. I had informed my mother about Paige’s arrival five days ago. She was excited about her return and also at the fact that she had a grandson all this while. My mother and sister also ad
KIMBERLY ~•~I found myself in an unfamiliar room when I opened my eyes. The last thing I remembered was being in the room with Emily and her mother. The sterile smell and beeping machines brought back memories of my countless visits to fertility clinics with Jackson, searching for answers to our struggles of making a baby. But I hadn’t been admitted to the hospital in forever. My mind raced with different questions about how I ended up in the hospital. Finally, the door creaked open, revealing a doctor who had some files in her hand. “Mrs Clarke, you’re finally awake.” She said with a big smile as she walked towards me. I wanted to correct her but I didn’t want anyone to know Jackson had just given me divorce papers earlier in the morning. “Who brought me here?” I asked, trying to sit up straight on the bed but the doctor stopped me right away. “You need to rest for a little while.” She instructed as he gently pushed me back. “A young woman brought you in.” She was referring
