NOVA
I prepared dinner for tonight, knowing he would be hungry since I didn't send any lunch to him today. I wasn't as excited as I was last night because I knew that whatever happened tonight would make or mar our future. The moment I heard the door open, I got up from the couch, gulping, when he came into focus. He had changed out of the blue shirt he wore this afternoon when I went to his office. Frowning, I wondered how he got a change of clothes. Did he buy it or… “What do you wish to inform me about?” He demanded as he dropped his briefcase on the table, glaring. “Where are the papers? Have you signed it?” “Don't you at least need to sit?” I asked, forcing a smile. I would lie if I said his words didn't hurt. He made it sound as if being a moment with me was work. “Not when I have something important to do,” he snapped, with his eyes narrowed at me. “I know how tremendous at tricks you are, Nova, and I'm not ready for any of that. Where are the papers?” I gulped. This wasn't how I envisioned it. I thought I would have to tell him the wonderful news over dinner, but it seemed I would have to do that now. “I… I have something else to show you.” I turned and walked over to the couch, where I dropped my bag. Sighing, I got the pregnancy results from it and took it over to him. “Here, this is what I have been trying to tell you since last night.” “And what would that be?” Scowling, he snatched the paper from me. His forehead creased as he read it before he gasped. “This can't be.” He shook his head as he looked towards me. My spirit plummeted at his words, and my heart almost sank into the pit of my stomach. What did he mean by that? Was he in denial? Would he accuse me of cheating on him? Would he ask for a termination? I was confused and could only watch him, waiting for him to say something. To let me know what was going through his head at the moment. I needed to know where I stood with him, and what steps to take. “You are pregnant?” He whispered, sounding awed, almost like he couldn't believe his ears. That was exactly the reaction I hoped to get from him at first. But now, I can't tell anymore. He took a step towards me, and I took three steps back, keeping as much distance as I could from him. What if he wished to hurt me? He frowned when he noticed my reaction. “When did you find out?” “…uhm… Yesterday?” “Yesterday?” He echoed. “Why didn't you call me when you got it? You could have at least told me when I returned last night.” Last night? I scoffed at that. How could I have told him about it when he didn't even wait for me to finish speaking before carrying me off to the bedroom? “You were… You were busy, so… I… I….” I gulped when I realized I had gotten close to the couch. One extra step, I would fall back on it and could only hope he stopped walking forward. “You hid this from me, Nova?” “I….” He smiled. It was the first genuine one I had seen on his face since we got married. I had to blink, to be certain I wasn't imagining it. With a husband like Dashiell, something as ordinary as a smile from him always seemed like a gift from the gods. Gulping, I watched him reach towards my face, still smiling. I couldn't help the dread that ran through my body at the thought of what he intended to do. What if his smile was just like the one death flashed whenever he arrived to take a soul? Would that be the last expression I would see before I meet my maker? Though he hadn't hurt me, at least physically, I couldn't tell what he had planned. There was always a first for everything. I tightly shut my eyes when his hand grazed my face. “This is good news, Nova,” he whispered before I felt something wet on my lips. Shocked, I snapped my eyes open, gasping when I realized he kissed my lips. Dashiell freaking kissed me! I blinked, to be certain I wasn't in a dream world. Dashiell would never kiss me. He told me kisses were for lovers, and that was something we weren't. One time, he told me he would rather kiss the arse of a pig than kiss my lips. Which was what brought rise to my shock when I felt his lips on mine. “Would you have kept this hidden had I not asked for a divorce?” He asked as he rubbed his thumb on my lower lip, smiling at me. “I…" I gulped, too stunned to formulate words. My brain was on holiday because it didn't understand what was freaking going on. I couldn't even tell if the man in front of me was the real deal or a con artist. “It's alright. It's better late than never, Nova.” He called my name like he had never done before, gently, with no hint of anger in his tone. “Thank you for making me a father,” he whispered before he kissed me. My head spun as if someone released fireworks. All the butterflies in my stomach took flight as he cradled the back of my head, gently, like it was glass, and kissed me like I was the only woman in his world. It was almost the same as the time he kissed… I dispelled those thoughts far from me. I was the one with him and not Lilith. It made little sense to be thinking of her. When he broke from the kiss and stared at me, I lost it. It was the first time I had seen raw desire in his gaze. Sex with him felt more like a chore because each time he slept with me, it was because he was angry. Never when he was happy. “I want you,” he muttered as he placed kisses on my lips. Once more, he swept me off my feet at how strange he was acting. First, it was the kiss, and now this? Was I fucking dreaming? Would I have to wake up, to discover I had dreamed everything? Without waiting for my reply, he got up and carried me, with his hands placed on the back of my knees and one on my back.Stunned, I could only watch as he carried me up the stairs. I expected him to walk over to my room like he had always done, but Dashiell, always full of surprises, carried me towards his room.A gasp left me when he opened his door. “This isn't my room,” I whispered“I know," he responded as he stepped in and closed the door with his feet before he carried me over to his bed.For the first time since we got married, he placed me on his bed. His room had always been off-limits to me. He warned me never to step into it, and I obeyed him.“We are in your room,” I repeated, hoping he would realize we were in his room since he seemed not to be in his right mind.“I know.” Smiling, he placed a kiss on my forehead. "Haven't you always desired to be brought in here?”“I have, but….” I gulped, looking up at him as I tried to tell myself I wasn't dreaming, that this was happening. “You haven't brought me to your room before,” I whispered, trying not to break whatever spell I had held him with.
He changed after that night, shocking me more than anything else. I wondered how someone could have a 180-degree turn in a night. At first, I assumed this was his ploy to get me to let my guard down, for him to strike, but nothing happened.I watched him for a week, waiting for it.Dashiell, who had always stayed late in the office, started returning early. Just like now. I had just finished making dinner when I heard the front door opening.“I'm back,” he announced as he walked into the kitchen.I turned to watch him, grinning as he strode over to me. He didn't hug me. He knelt in front of me and placed a kiss on my tummy. “How is my darling?” He rubbed my stomach, smiling. “Dad is back, did you miss me?”I felt a pang at his words and actions, knowing I didn't matter to him. The only reason he was doing this was because of the baby.I knew why. When I visited Mama Kaka today, she told me about his grandfather's will. Having this baby would mean he has to secure the other part of hi
DASHIELLI twirled the pen in my hand as I went through the lists for the summer gala.A knock on the door interrupted me. Lilith walked in with a smile, holding a mug of coffee in hand as she strode over to me. “Hello, Darling.”“Oh.” I blinked, smiling as I got up from my chair. “Hello, sweetheart. How was your trip?” I stepped around the table, to her side.“I'm not happy, you realise that, right???” She dropped the coffee on my desk before turning to confront me, pouting.“Why?” Puzzled, I watched her walk over to me and wrap her hands around my waist. She placed her head on my chest and peered up at me.“Why didn't you call me during my trip? I was expecting your calls, you know?” She pursed her lips, sulking like a kid.“Oh, that?” I smiled as I removed some strands of hair from her face. “I figured you were busy, which was why I didn't call.”“Busy?” She removed her head from my chest and stepped back, frowning. “How busy could I have been not to pick up your calls?” She asked
NOVAI locked the door, and left the house, waving at the security men by the gate as I hurried out. Though Dashiell asked me to let one of them drive me to Mama Kaka's house, I opted to use a taxi. This way, I could walk a little, to exercise before heading over to her house. I had just walked a distance from the house when a red Camaro stopped in front of me. Frowning, I walked past it, humming under my breath. A few steps away from the car, I heard my name.Whirling around, a scowl came over my face when I noticed who it was. Lilith, the bitch. She was leaning on the hood of the red Camaro, twirling the keys in her right index as her gaze levelled on me. I could see the contempt in that stare. She looked like she was sizing me up to know where to start from."What's it? What are you doing here?" I demanded, surprised to see her close to the house. Was meeting Dashiell in the office not enough for her?"Dashiell sent me to pick you up," she said so casually like this was something
“What?” I frowned, furrowing my brows. “What did you just say?” “What you thought you heard.” She stopped a few paces away from me. “Dashiell wants you to get rid of the baby,” she repeated. “Impossible.” Instinctively, I placed my palms on my belly as I shook my head. “That's the last thing he would ask me to do. He will never ask me to terminate my pregnancy. Never.” “But he did.” She walked forward, closing the distance between us. “That's a lie.” “A lie? Why do you think so?” She looked amused, cocking her head to the side. “I know he never loved me, but Dashiell won't order me to abort the pregnancy. If there's one thing he had always wanted, it was a child.” “But not with you,” she hissed. “What the hell are you talking about?” “I think this will prove some facts to you, Nova. Your dearest husband gave his consent.” She brought a piece of paper out from her bag and waved it in my face. “What?” I snatched the note from her and read through it, my eyes widening the mor
DASHIELL I checked the time on my wristwatch, worried. Nova should have been there an hour ago, but she was nowhere to be found. I tried her cellphone, but she switched it off. I even called the house to find out if she was still at home, but was told she left this morning at exactly 9 AM. So, where the fuck did she go to? I paced the floor, troubled as different thoughts went through my mind. I had always been a strong man and prided myself on thoughts of how calm and composed I was in times like this, but at the moment, I couldn't help the fear that gripped me.What if she had met with misfortune on the road and lost the baby? According to the men at home, she left the house alone, without letting any of them drive her. I didn't think it odd because she always took a taxi or had my driver take her to my office. However, it had been bloody hours since she left, and no one was yet to know where she went. “Dash,” Lilith called out as she strode into my office, smiling. She walked o
Five years later BELLA“Ma'am, these are the lists of new projects,” Clara, my secretary, said, passing her iPad to me. “You can check through them for any change you might need us to implement?” “Uhm. this is good.” I went through them, nodding with smiles at my designs. Who would have thought I would one day have an office of my own, and workers, willing to do my bidding? The icing on the cake? I got to do what I love the most. “What of this?” She pointed to the latest design I worked on before sending it to them. “Do you like the finished product? The production team manager seems to think it doesn't rhyme with your drawings.”“It does.” I peered at the jewellery that had finally come to life from the drawing I gave. “Send three of the products to me for the last designs. I need to go through them before I can carry out a positive judgment. Seeing them on screen isn't the same as off-screen.”“Would you like to visit the production site?” She asked, sounding excited. “We can go
DASHIELLStaring at the wedding picture I kept in my drawer, reminded me of Nova. I was searching for a file I kept on there when I saw it, something I had forgotten I brought to the office after I took it down because of Lilith — she hates seeing the picture on my desk. Sighing, I stared at a smiling Nova. It has been five freaking years since she left me. Five years since she disappeared from the country with no trace. At first, I was pissed with her, blaming her for every misfortune, but gradually, it turned to more. Her disappearance not only made me feel betrayed, but it left a hole in my heart. I couldn't tell what it was. Was it anger, or something else entirely? “Darling!” Lilith called out in that shrill voice of hers that always annoyed me.Startled, I placed the picture back in the drawer, before I looked up, forcing a smile so she wouldn't notice what I just did. “What's it?” I stood up from my chair and walked over to her, still smiling. My cheeks hurt from the exerti
