Amelia
“You’re awake!” Someone exclaimed in a kind Southern twang.
I opened my eyes slowly, disoriented and confused.
Where was I?
The walls were a plain white and flooded with harsh lights. I winced, trying to understand what was going on.
“Where am I?” I asked groggily.
“Poor darling,” the accent replied. “you’re in the Maryland hospital.”
I turned my head carefully to see a nurse staring down at me worriedly. My whole body hurt but my head felt like someone had taken a hammer to it.
“What happened? Why am I here?”
“Don’t you remember?”
The last thing I remembered was running out of the Mallory house and my husband screaming my name. I remembered feeling terrified and horrified by my actions. Everything after that was a big blur.
“You ran into the street and got knocked down by an incoming bike. You’re lucky that the bike was going slowly and you didn’t get yourself killed.” The nurse chided softly. “What were you thinking?”
I was thinking that I needed to run as fast as I could before my husband caught me and strangled me to death.
“Where’s my phone? I need to make a call.”
She frowned, “I think you need your rest more.”
“No, you don’t understand,” I barked, “My husband will be worried.”
I had no idea what time it was or how long I had been unconscious but I just knew that Lachlan wasn’t going to be pleased with me disappearing into thin air.
“Fine,” she said, “but if the call upsets you, I’ll end it immediately.”
I nodded hurriedly and she turned to dig out my phone from a plastic bag before handing it to me. I wasn’t sure if my phone had sustained any harm since it was so full of cracks, I couldn’t tell if a new one had joined in.
What mattered was that it was still functional.
My head was woozy and it took me a few times for my fingers to be able to punch in Lachlan’s number. The call rang a few times before he picked it with a distracted, “Hello?”
“I-uh- it’s me.” I said carefully.
“Who?”
I swallowed roughly, feeling how parched my throat was, “It’s Amelia. Your wife.”
I could feel the nurse’s confused gaze on me but refused to look at her.
“Amelia? Where the fuck have you been? You had better come home this instant.” He said angrily, “I can’t Believe you embarrassed me in such a way. In front of my family for that matter. You’ll face the consequences of your irrational actions.”
I winced, “I g-got in an accident,” I explained, “I’ve been unconscious a-and I just woke up and-“
“Save your explanations. I don’t care,” he said. I heard Cassandra’s voice at the background and my hands tightened around the plastic of the phone, wondering where he was.
“I’ll b-be home soon.” I said.
“I wish you had died in that accident. At least that way I’d have been free from you forever. You’re nothing but a stain to my name and that of my family’s.”
I sucked in a horrified breath, it was the first time Lachlan had ever made his hatred of me so clear. I had known he loathed me, but I didn’t think it had reached the extent that he would wish me dead. How could he be so cruel.
“Y-you don’t mean that. I love you, Lachlan.”
“The next time you say that, you won’t like my reaction,” he said coldly, shocking me.
“I’m sorry,” I rushed to say, but he had already hung up, uncaring of me and my apologies.
Tears fell out of my eyes and my body trembled at yet another rejection from my husband. I was so lost in my despondence that when the nurse tapped me lightly on the arm, I jerked, startled.
“It’s just me, miss.” She said lightly.
“Mrs,” I corrected reflexively, “I’m Mrs Mallory.”
She looked from me to the phone in my hand doubtfully, “I assume that call was to your husband.”
“Yes, so?” I said defensively.
She stared at me with something that bordered too close too pity for my liking, “that’s now how husbands are supposed to treat their wives.”
“You don’t understand anything about Lachlan and I,” I said angrily, “He was as forced into this as I was. He’s angry, as is expected, he just needs time to-“
She cut in immediately, “I’m not interested in hearing your tail of woe or listening to you defend that man that just made you cry. All I’ll tell you is that there’s a life out there that will make you far happier and fulfilled.”
I stared at her in anger, “Are you a nurse or a relationship counsellor?”
Her eyes widened in surprise, “I didn’t mean to overstep.”
“Am I free to leave?” I asked instead, quickly changing the topic. I didn’t want to talk about my marriage anymore. It was far more complicated than she thought she knew.
I loved Lachlan with all my heart and eventually, my love would find a way to get through to him and he’ll see that we were meant to be.
“It’s advisable that you stay a few days, especially given your home situation. You have a few bruises and you almost died for Godsake.”
I catalogued my bruises and concluded that none of it was a big deal. Lachlan was particular about me not sleeping away from home and I didn’t want to incur his wrath. I needed to go and apologize for the mess I had made of his family dinner and hope he’d forgive me.
“I would like to talk to the doctor in charge, please,” I said stonily.
“What you need is rest and sometime to heal away from-“ the nurse began but I quickly cut her off.
“I would like to see the doctor,” I reiterated.
She sighed and grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down her number and passed it to me, “call me whenever. I’ll always be there to help. Believe it or not, I care about you and your baby –“
My head swirled and I stared at her open mouthed, “What baby?”
She gave me a surprised look, “I’m sorry, I thought you knew. You’re four weeks pregnant, Mrs Mallory.”
I could only blink at her in
surprise as the words sank down into my brain.
After all these years, I was going to have Lachlan’s baby!
Amelia“Lachlan, I have good news,I’m pregnant. No- that’s too boring,” I muttered to myself as I hurried into the house excitedly. I couldn’t wait to tell my husband the good news. It was the one thing he had wanted since the beginning of this marriage. The only thing he had hoped for. I believed this would help us get closer, and finally heal the rift between us.But what if he didn’t believe me? The thought immediately halted me, but there was an easy solution to it. I could do a quick pregnancy test now so I could tell him with the evidence. I immediately rushed to my room and dug out one of the kits and followed the instructions then went to find Lachlan. But as soon as I burst into the home office excitedly, my heart dropped to my stomach at the sight before me. My husband was seated on his big leather chair, and on the hand of the chair was none other than Cassie. I froze in shock as her hands slowly undid the the buttons of his shirt, murmuring silky words at him while he l
Lachlan“A divorce?” I repeated blankly. I stilled in shock at the hard look in Amelia’s eyes. It was a look I had never seen before in our three years of marriage. She had always looked at me helplessly and with love and devastation that irritated me so much and made my skin crawl. The last thing I had ever expected was for my wife to be the one to serve me divorce papers tonight. Everything I had done had been to make her miserable in this marriage, but she knew the stipulations on the marriage contract arranged by my late father. She wasn’t entitled to a single dollar of my money if she ever divorced me unless she had given me an heir. So far, she was still the same barren woman from day one. Amelia hadn’t been my first, second or even hundredth choice for a wife. My plan had always been to end up with Cassie. But my father, the manipulative bastard had twisted my hands all the way to his grave and saddled me with this joke of a woman. “Yes,” she said slowly and stepped forwa
Lachlan.I was still in pain and hurt. How she was able to beat me at my game baffled me a lot. At some point, I was almost losing it. I think I need therapy. “I see no reason why you'd always want to keep looking for that miserable bitch. She's not worth all the stress, Lachie; she's not worth it. c'mon” Cassandra's words were beginning to irritate my ears. I couldn't tell what the reason but it was just irritating. At this point in time, I don't feel like talking to anyone. I was hell-bent on bringing her back to the house. If she had left alone, I wouldn't be moved whatsoever, maybe a little though, but she's left with my damn child! My growth, for God's sake! I won't in any way let this go down like that; I never will. “Look, Cassie, you just have to let me be as we speak; it's not making any sense to me that you're always nagging me to death; please let me think!” For the very first time, I lashed out at Cassie. Her countenance changed immediately. I shouldn't have shouted at
Amelia I can't tell where the courage to file for divorce came from. I just know how to do it to save myself, and more so for the sake of my mental health. I can't afford to see him and Cassandra all loved up while I sit down to watch their folly. It'd be very stupid and silly for me to still stay there after all the humiliation he has put me through in the last 3 years of our marriage. I had wanted to break the good news of my pregnancy to him. At least you wanted a son all these years, and I was finally giving him one. I had imagined a series of scenarios in my head; all I wanted was for my husband to love me and treat me like the baby girl I've always been. Nirvana's wildest dreams: Did I imagine a day like this coming? Even if I wanted to fight for a divorce, it would not be so soon. I packed my bag as tears flowed down in torrents. I'll look at the pregnancy kits in my hand, reading the meaning of the results you can show me. It's too much to bear to have to leave the home I'v
Amelia I took a deep breath as I looked around. I never expected Bailey to live in such a beautiful house. I mean, she's a nurse for crying out loud. How the hell does someone who spends all day cleaning up vomit and attending to sick patients have the money to afford such a mansion?“You have a beautiful house, ma.” I complimented her as she ushered me into the living room.“You are probably wondering how a nurse like me who spends all day cleaning up after sick people could afford something like this.” She chuckled, and my face went red.How did she know what I was thinking?! It was probably a wild guess.“Don't worry, I can't read your mind. I've been asked a lot of times by people who visit.”Bailey placed my bag down beside the sofa; we argued for almost five minutes before I finally let her carry it for me.Sigh, this woman is a lot.Don't get me wrong, I love how kind she is, but I guess I'm not used to such kindness. Especially with my current situation.I sat down, and Bailey
EricI hung up the phone with Aunt Bailey.“Get me Thomas.” I said this to the maid beside me. I always made sure to have one of them on standby in case I needed something urgently. I can't be shouting in my own house, that minus steeze. The maid left and, a few seconds later, came back with Thomas, my personal assistant and the head of all the workers in my mansion.“I have a guest coming over; prepare one of the guest rooms. The guest is a lady, so prepare accordingly. Also, add a bit of Aunt Bailey style to the room to make it cosy. We both know my aunt is a pro at making someone comfortable.”“Do you want me to arrange a particular room?” Thomas asked.“Nah, just pick whatever.” I shrugged.I just got off the phone with my aunt Bailey, and she told me she was bringing a lady over. I was curious about the kind of lady she was bringing and if she would be my spec. She had been disturbing me for a while, so I showed her a woman who had my heart. Is it the reason she is bringing a stra
Chapter 10Lachlan“Catch!”I threw my key at the valet, walking past him into the house. Mom had called me over for dinner, and as much as I wanted to reject it, I decided to accept.I feel like they might have an inkling of what was happening, but it would be better not to act suspiciously. Knowing my parents, they won't outright ask about it.I just hope Nina and Christopher know nothing about it. I can't really deal with them right now.As I walked into the hall, I messaged my temples a bit. I've been having headaches ever since I found out that Amelia had most likely run off with my unborn child.I looked around, and the house looked the same as usual. My mother's weird sculptures and rare art aesthetics mixed with my father's antiquated style. The house gave off an ancient European/African vibe that sent a shiver down my spine.Sometimes, I wonder how two people with such tastes ended up together. Thankfully, I took their better traits and not this.I suddenly heard footsteps, a
Amelia “Mom, are fairytales real? Can I really become a princess and get carried away by a prince into the sunset?” I looked up at the woman, cradling my head on her lap. Her smile was warm, her gaze gentle, and her beauty immaculate. I have seen many pictures of princesses in storybooks, but none of them; none of their beauty could compare to my mother's. I saw as the gentle honey brown orbs dimmed a bit as Mother pondered for a bit, her smile twitching before blooming once more, lighting up her face. She looked into my eyes, pulling away strands of golden locks and tucking them behind her ears. “Yes Amelia. As long as you believe it with all your heart, then whatever dreams you have will come true. Even fairytales.” I stared deep into her eyes, a shiver running down my spine at the assurance within them. “Amelia, only you can make your life better. You have gone through a lot; this is the time for you to put a stop to your suffering. No one can do it for you except you.” “Ye
Eric’ POVThe night breeze escaping through the floor to ceiling window in my office did absolutely nothing to reduce my frustration. I loosened my tie and relaxed into the leather chair behind my desk. The once organised table is now in a mess, scattered with paperwork and staples pins.A pile of neatly arranged files lay to my right, perfectly aligned, the only thing organised here. I looked up at the wall and onto the pictures, if only I could hang there with them.I finally pulled the tie out of my collar and tossed it onto the desk, running a hand through my hair. Cassandra. The thought of her name alone made my blood boil. She almost ruined everything. The plan had been careful in making but Cassandra, with her nature and jealousy, had nearly torn it all apart in one reckless act. Attacking Amelia? That wasn’t just stupidity; it was sabotage! What I honestly wanted to know was who in the world gave her that foolish idea to hire amateurs to try and harm my woman!Should I cut
Christopher.I immediately turned and was meant with nothing but barrels of oil on the floor. There was no sign of Lachlan. I sighed, slapping my forehead again before stepping into my car and driving off.Nina’s POVThe headline popped up on my phone while I was sipping my morning latte, and I nearly choked. Normally I ignore stuff like this and focus more on the fashion news, but this story was too hot not to catch my attention. “BREAKING NEWS: Attempted Home Invasion at Mallory Mansion!" My eyes widened as I scrolled through the article. Apparently, some idiots tried to break into Lachlan’s house last night. They were dead now, of course, because nothing ever happens to Golden Boy Lachlan without some cosmic justice raining down in his favor. Still, it was juicy. Men storming his house, Amelia being in the house, and now they’re six feet under? This was practically ripped from a soap opera. I could already hear my mother’s voice in my head: “Nina, stop meddling in your brothers’
LACHLANThe fluorescent lights of the police station buzzed faintly as I walked through the doors, my mind heavily held down by a mixture of dread and determination. Matthew trailed just behind me, his expression stoic but his eyes alert. The station gave a stench of stale coffee mixed with frustration, a combination I’d grown accustomed to during these past few chaotic days. The detective in charge of the case called in earlier today that there have been some findings about the whereabouts of the assailants. It was good news, yes, but there was more, and they couldn’t tell me over the phone, so I had to come down here myself. Detective Harper greeted me with a curt nod. “Mr. Mallory, thank you for coming in. Let’s talk in my office.”I followed her into a small, cluttered room. Matthew remained close. If anyone could recognise Amelia’s attackers, it was him. Which was why I had brought him along with me again. Harper motioned for us to sit, her lips pressed into a grim line.“We fou
Christopher I staggered into my apartment, half drunk, exhausted, and honestly just wanting to sleep off the buzz from the club. It was nearly 3 a.m., and I’d lost track of how many drinks I’d downed with all those hot women. All I could think about was removing these clothes, getting in a hot shower, and letting the water wash off the stench of alcohol on me. As I turned on the shower, droplets of water began to gently slide down my chest, and I closed my eyes, letting the water pour over my hair, but as soon as I stepped out and grabbed a towel, my phone vibrated on the counter, slightly lighting up the dim room. It was Cassie. “Why's she calling?” I groaned, but something in the back of my mind told me to pick up. She wouldn’t call at this hour without a reasonable excuse. With that, I quickly dried off my wet body, yanked on some pants, and slid the green icon. "Cassandra, I was wondering when I’d hear from you again.” I heard her take a deep breath. “Chris, I need your hel
AMELIA I woke up slowly, my mind drifting through a thick haze, like I was trying to wade through fog. For a moment, everything was blurry, and a tightness settled in my chest. Where was I? Was I still at the hospital? Then I felt the warmth of a hand over mine, firm but gentle, and everything came rushing back. Blinking, I looked up to see Lachlan sitting beside me, his face tense but softening as he noticed I was awake. The sight of him washed away the last traces of fear, and I let out a breath I hadn’t realised I was holding.“Lachlan…” My voice was barely a whisper, but his expression shifted, relief flooding his eyes.“I’m right here, love,” he said, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze.I wanted to tell him everything I was feeling—how scared I’d been, how grateful I was that he was here now—but the words felt tangled in my throat. Before I could even try, the door opened, and a middle-aged man in a white coat stepped in. He had a kind face, with just a hint of greying at the
CASSANDRAHow could they fail? I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms as I paced the length of my bedroom, the sour taste of anger mixing with fear. They were supposed to be professionals, discreet. They were supposed to handle everything without it coming back to me. But those idiots let Amelia slip through their fingers. I should have known his chauffeur wasn't normal. Lachlan was onto us now. He was too smart; I’d known this. It was part of why I’d fallen for him in the first place.Well too late for regrets; thanks to their incompetence, I was backed into a corner, and the thought made my skin crawl. The image of him still being by that bitch’s side burnt in my mind, fuelling my jealousy. Why her? Why did he look at her the way he used to look at me? I could have given him so much more if he’d just let me back in.My phone buzzed, and I saw Eric’s name light up the screen. My pulse quickened, a mix of hope and apprehension, but before I could even speak, his voice thund
LACHLANI should have been there. The thought ran circles in my mind, looping through every possible scenario in which I had somehow kept her safe. I was supposed to protect Amelia. But I had left her alone, vulnerable, and now she was in the hospital, recovering from an attack that could’ve cost her life. Worse, our child’s life. I clenched my fists so tight that my knuckles cracked, trying to keep my anger in check. It was mostly anger at myself—a gnawing, bitter frustration that I hadn’t been there when she’d needed me.Matthew sat beside me at the police station, scrolling through images on the detective’s tablet, helping to sort through potential suspects. He was silent but tense, his face a mirror of my own worry. I could see in his eyes that he was as furious as I was about what had happened. If he’d been there earlier, maybe he would have stopped those men. But he wasn’t to blame, and deep down, I knew that. The responsibility fell on me alone.“You don’t have to stay, Matthew
The house felt unusually still as I put away the last of the dishes. Lachlan had left just after dinner, saying he’d be home soon. He was working late again and had just come home during lunch break to spend time with me before he took off again. Lately, “soon” had been stretching longer and longer, but tonight, with the baby restless, I missed his presence more than usual. I sighed, patting my belly gently. “He’ll be home any minute now, my miracle, don't you worry,” I whispered, hoping it would somehow make the time pass faster. Lillian wasn't in the house today. She had gone to her home for her usual medical checkup, so she was sending her daughter to her place. Her name is Rebecca, and she and I have spoken a few times on the phone. She is a really lovely person. So yes, I was all alone in this empty house with nothing else to do but sleep. Which was exactly what I did. Cooking dinner did a number on me. My whole back was aching. Maybe I could ask Lachlan to give me one of thos
LACHLANThis whole week has been nothing but great. I had just closed a million-dollar deal with a company I've been chasing throughout the year. I had my beautiful wife waiting for me at home, and our son or daughter was going to be born soon. Amelia didn't want to find out the gender before the baby was born. She said it would ruin the thrill of having our first child. She wanted it to be a surprise for both of us. I, on the other hand, so badly wanted a daughter. Someone I could pamper, learn how to braid for, buy dresses for because she was my pretty princess, and chase away boys who wanted to come close to her. I didn't realise I was smiling widely until my cheeks started to hurt. I quickly stopped my daydreaming and continued to sign the projects we were supposed to commence with. I was planning on building a few gas stations in Dubai. My friend Abdul Rashad, who lives there, told me it would be a very good investment. Expanding my business was my goal. The whole world would kn
