Chapter Ninety

“Of course not. What do you think I am, crazy?” I said to Athena, my younger sister in Spanish. It was a Sunday and I was in the living room of Aziel’s house on a video call with my sister. I’d been there for a few hours ‘cause I’d talked to all my family including my older brother, Julio who had tried to cross the border with me but couldn’t make it. I had spoken to my mom and her sister’s children as well as my aunts and abuela. It wasn’t often that I got to speak to all of them at once ‘cause they were rarely in the same place at the same time but that day happened to be the fourth anniversary of my abuelo’s death so everyone had to come together.

“Your skin looks really white and perfect. Your hair looks shiny and perfect. Life there must have been as easy as they say it is. I’m really jealous.” She said in Spanish, sighing at the end of her statement.
