Chapter 90: A Dangerous Rescue

Roman's POV

The image pierced into my mind. Naomi—trapped, defenseless, terrified. My chest constricted as if my heart had been mercilessly squeezed by a vice.

I looked at the phone screen once again, my hands shaking from rage and desperation. I feared my teeth could break from the tightness in my jaw. Elijah was showing off that he had her. The bastard believed he could manipulate and mock me.

My voice was low and venomous as I muttered, "Not this time."

I slammed the door behind me as I ran into my study. Long shadows were casted throughout the room by the desk lamp's feeble light, but I didn't mind the gloom. It mirrored the storm that was building inside of me.

I needed a plan

I kept thinking about Naomi's face, her terrified wide eyes. I would be haunted by that expression until I got her. No, not just got her back. I’d make damn sure Elijah regretted ever laying a finger on her.

I took my phone out and dialed a number. Marcus, my head o

The EscapeNaomi's POVThe room was cold and wet. The rope, which was wrapped too tightly to permit even the slightest movement, dug into my skin, causing my wrists to hurt. My body hurt from where I’d been shoved into the chair hours ago. Time blurred in this hazy darkness. I forced myself to breathe. I couldn't bear to panic right now. The only thing keeping me grounded was the thought of Roman. He’d come for me—I knew it. But when? Through the walls, I could hear the faint buzz of voices. I tried to listen, paying attention to the word's cadence despite my inability to make them out. All of my instincts begged me to pay attention and to follow any lead that might get me out of here. The sound of footsteps approached, heavy and deliberate. My heart raced. I didn't recognize the man who stepped through the creaking door. I forced myself not to scowl at him as his beady eyes passed over me with apathy. The man grunted to the guard by the entrance, "Elijah said no harm for no

Camille's Downfall (Roman's POV)My eyes met Naomi's as soon as I entered the room, everything inside me twisted. She was wrapped in a blanket and sitting on the couch, her face pallid and battered, her wrists raw from the binding. I was devastated by the sight. She looked up at me, her eyes red and puffy from crying, but she tried to smile—a fragile, heartbreaking attempt to reassure me. My fists clenched at my sides, my jaw tight. Like wildfire, rage raged through my veins, yet beneath it all was something worse: Helplessness. All of this happened because I'm wasn't smart, fast and ruthless enough."Roman," she said softly, her voice tremulous but resolute. I knelt in front of her after taking three steps across the room. My thumbs brushed her cheeks as I caressed her face gently. My stomach turned over the bruises there. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice hoarse. “I should’ve gotten to you sooner.” Her hand was on mine as she shook her head. “You came. That's what matte

Elijah’s Last StandRoman's POVI remained still as soon as the call ended, gripping the phone as if it were the only thing keeping me in check. Elijah was gone. A man like him didn’t just disappear—not without a plan, not without leaving leads to follow. The room was stuffy. My mind raced with the implications of Marcus's words, but one thought emerged from the midst of all the chaos: He's not running. He's working on something.“Elijah,”I muttered, his name tainted with venom. My reflection in the glass window stared back, unyielding and cold. The man in that reflection was prepared for a fight. I turned on my heel and walked out of the office, my resolve burning in my chest. It must let Naomi know about Elijah's latest development.*******The living room was dark, and the soft hum of the heater filled the stillness. Naomi lay peacefully on the couch with a blanket draped across her lap. She gave me a look as soon as I entered. "Roman," she said softly, in a cautious tone. "W

Naomi's BraveryRoman's POVFour men emerged from the shadows as the steady, purposeful footsteps became louder. Each had the icy assurance of an experienced killer. One of them, with his hand resting on the weapon holstered at his side, smirked cruelly as their eyes met ours. Elijah leaned back in his chair as if he had been waiting for this moment, totally unconcerned. “Did you really think I’d be here alone?” he said, his tone dripping with mockery. “You should know me better by now, Roman.”I positioned myself a little in front of Naomi and gripped my rifle tighter. "You're mistaken if you believe that hiding behind your men will save you." With his fingers beating languidly on the armrest, Elijah laughed. "Save me? Oh no, Roman. I’m just giving you one last chance to reconsider. Walk away, and we’ll pretend this never happened.” “Never,” I growled, taking a step forward. Naomi's voice sliced through the tension like a razor as one of the men shifted and pulled out his rif

New Threat Roman's POV It was an anxious drive to the station. With her fingers grasping the edge of her seat, Naomi sat next to me. The flickering streetlights outside illuminated the mixture of determination and dread in her eyes. "What do you think it is?" she finally asked, breaking the heavy silence. I gripped the wheel tighter and muttered, "It's not good if it's enough to pull us back here." She glanced at me. "We just took Elijah down. What could possibly be worse than him?" I didn’t answer. I didn’t have one. Chief Donovan was waiting for us in the lobby when we got to the precinct. His lips were squeezed into a tiny line, and his face was pallid. This was bad, whatever it was. "Chief," I called, stepping forward. "What's going on?" He gestured for us to follow him, moving quickly. "It’s easier if I show you.” We walked through the maze of desks and buzzing conversations until we reached the briefing room. A big, menacing stack of paperwork sat on

The Shadow SyndicateRoman's POV It was an anxious drive to the safe house. With her hands firmly clutching her lap, Naomi sat next to me. Her quiet was more audible than any words she could have said. She was not to blame. Marcus had found more than a breadcrumb of a lead. It was a damn slump, threatening to bury everything we thought we knew. “Roman,” Naomi said softly, breaking the silence. “Do you really think this... Shadow Syndicate is real?”I gave her a quick glance before going back to the road. "If half of what Marcus found is true, then yes, it’s real. And it’s been pulling strings for years.” Her face was marked with stress, and her brows were furrowed. “And you think Elijah was working for them?” I gripped the steering wheel tighter. “Yes he is definitely working with them. The Syndicate? They’re the real players. The ones who make men like Elijah dance to their tune.” ***********The safehouse was a small, a faceless building outside the city. Inside, Marcus wa

Camille’s OfferRoman's POVAs soon as I entered the state prison's visiting room, I was struck by the musty smell of disinfectant. The steel chairs that were fastened to the floor had an unsettling shine from the weak flickering fluorescent lights. The orange jumpsuit Camille was wearing didn't fit the sneer that curved her scarlet lips as she sat on the other side of the thick glass. I detested how calm she still appeared, as if she had never betrayed me, tried to destroy Naomi, or burned every bridge she had ever crossed. “You’ve looked better,” I said, settling into the frigid chair and grabbing the phone mounted on the wall. She shot back, her voice as silky and caustic as I remembered, "And you looked otherwise." Her piercing blue eyes were intense as she drew closer. " “But we’re not here to trade insults, are we, Roman?” “Depends. Why did you asked for a meeting?” She smiled, leaning back with the air of someone who thought she was holding all the cards. “Because yo

A Fragile UnityNaomi's POV Except for the gentle hum of the refrigerator and the sporadic creak of the ancient hardwood floor beneath my feets, the room was silent. With his head in his hands and tension flowing off him in waves, Roman perched on the edge of the couch. My thoughts were racing as I watched him leaning against the doorway. We had to stop struggling in the dark and holding out hope for a miracle. Yes, Camille was dangerous, but I couldn't deny that she might have the answers we were looking for. I took a step forward and gently cleared my throat. "Roman?" His sharp eyes met mine as he raised his head. "If this is about Camile, Don't Naomi." I hesitated, but my chest's resolution remained unwavering. “Don’t what? Don’t try to save us?” . He clenched his jaw. "She doesn't have the answer we need. She is teasing me, and I will not fall for it.” I crossed my arms and looked directly into his eyes. "What if she isn't? What if she is being honest? Is it reasonabl

The sun rose gently over the expansive estate, its golden rays beams through the wide windows and highlight the serene scene within. Naomi sat in the garden, her laughter blended with the soft chirping of birds. She held two small babies in her arms, their gentle coos bringing the distinct sound of fresh life into the room. Two years had flown by, a tapestry of hardships, victories, and emotional moments. The happiness and tranquility they had worked so hard to achieve suddenly eclipsed what had seemed like an endless struggle. Roman came out onto the terrace and looked at his wife and kids, his eyes warming. Naomi looked up, her eyes full of love, her smile radiant. With a hint of surprise and fatigue in her voice, she muttered, "They're already asleep." Roman approached and lowered himself next to her. With the same gentleness that one could reserve for the most delicate of treasures, he removed the small boy from her arms. “He’s going to be as strong as his mother,” Roman mu

A Wedding to Remember Roman's POVThe room was bathed in a warm glow as the morning sun came through the drapes. I awoke to the distant bustle of the city and the faint sound of birdsong, but nothing could compare to the woman who lay next to me. Naomi's chest rose and fell with each gentle breath, her face relaxed in the kind of peace that came only after storms.Today was the day. I didn't feel like I was being pulled down by the past. Instead there was an enormous sense of expectancy, as if I were on the brink of something significant, something that would change my life. I moved a little, brushing a stray strand of hair from Naomi's face. She stirred and opened her eyes meeting mine."Morning," she said in a sleep-smoggy voice. "Morning," I replied, my voice soft but tinged with excitement. I couldn’t help the smile that appeared on my face. "You ready to become official Mrs. Blackhood?" A smile twisted her lips, and she stretched languidly before supporting herself on on

A Safe HavenRoman's POV As I watched Naomi move gracefully across the room, I sipped my coffee while leaning on the kitchen counter. Her hair was in an untidy bun, and she was humming gently. Her appearance in one of my baggy shirts caused an inexplicable sensation in my chest. “Did I ever tell you how hit you look in that?” I asked, my voice low and teasing.A sneer tugged at Naomi's lips asshe looked over her shoulder. “Flattery this early in the morning, Roman? What do you want?” I put down my mug and laughed. “Nothing. Just stating the truth.” She rolled her eyes and returned to scrambling eggs on the stove, not bothering to cover her smile. The air was thick with the aroma of spices and butter, and it surrounded me like a cozy blanket. Simple, peaceful, and unguarded moments like these served as a reminder of our progress. But, the weight of something unsaid hung over me even as I took it all in. “Naomi,” I started, my tone more serious now. Her brow furrowed sli

The Wedding PreparationRoman's POV I stood in the doorway of our bedroom, watching Naomi sleep, her chest rising and falling in a regular beat. Her skin was glowing golden as the early morning sunshine crept through the curtains. In sharp contrast to the commotion we had experienced to get here, she appeared calm.I felt contentment for the first time in a long time, something I had not experienced in years. It wasn't the kind that accompanied short-lived triumphs or meaningless accomplishments. This was quieter, deeper, and completely connected to the woman in front of me.Now it was more than just contract or a deal, I want a formal wedding with her. She had brought light into my world of calculated risks and cold decisions. And for her, I wanted to be more than the man I’d been. more than the man I had been for her.But how could I make it special without complicating it? I didn’t want grandeur or anything that felt impersonal. Naomi deserved something that reflected her—simpl

Naomi’s Gallery ReopensNaomi's POVThe gallery was alive with conversation and excitement, and it was around me like a cozy hug. I was standing close to the door, my fingers shaking a little as I held a flute of sparkling cider. But it wasn't fear. It was a sense of expectation. With work of love, the new gallery rose from the ashes of the one Elijah had destroyed. I had designed every detail with Roman's assistance, making sure it reflected both my art and my journey. The space was warm and inviting, with exposed brick walls that gave it character and high ceilings that made the room feel spacious. Each sculpture was softly lit by track lighting, and the romance was enhanced by the gentle creaking of the natural wood floorboards beneath the feet. This gallery offered a more personal touch than the previous one's sleek and modern vibe. Roman had insisted on a handcrafted sign above the entrance, and I’d chosen the name carefully: “New Hope Studio.”Along with my work, local a

My heartbeat's faint sound, a constant reminder that I wasn't dreaming, filled the silence."Don’t overthink it," I whispered to myself, though my body refused to relax. Something about the sudden darkness felt calculated, deliberate. I inhaled deeply and moved toward the bedroom door, feeling my way through. My fingers touched the wall's edge as I went slowly and carefully. The silence was nearly deafening, and the air felt heavier with every stride.A loud click reverberated throughout the house as I entered the corridor that led to the sitting room, and the lights flickered back on. A Fresh StartNaomi's POV It was a calm yet intense drive home. Roman's thumb caressed my knuckles absentmindedly, a small yet personal touch that warmed me. The commotion of the previous few days gave way to an odd sense of tranquility as the city skyline blurred past the window. “Naomi,” Roman said, breaking the silence. His voice drew me out of my reverie as I turned to face him. "Yes?" His angular features were softened by the afternoon light as he looked at me. "I've been considering what comes next. For us. My chest tightened in the greatest way as he uttered *us*. It was a declaration rather than a question, and I never imagined hearing such a resounding affirmation from someone like Roman. "And?" The ShowdownNaomi's POVAnticipation weighed heavily on the air inside the car. Roman's jaw was tense and his knuckles were white as he grabbed the steering wheel. As we raced in the direction of the syndicate's secret base, the city merged into the background. I sat next to him, silent but full of determination. I held the small gun Roman had given me earlier in my lap. Even though it felt heavy and cold in my hands, I knew it was necessary. “You don’t have to come with me,” Roman said, breaking the silence, his voice low but firm. I turned to him, meeting his intense gaze. “Yes, I do.” For a brief moment, the fear that lay beneath his stony exterior surfaced, softening his gaze. “Just stay close to me, Naomi. Whatever happens, don’t leave my side.” “I won’t,” I promised. The car screeched to a stop outside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city. With its broken windows and graffitied walls, it was the kind of place that screamed danger. As we got out of th

Even though the contact was slight and insignificant it gave me a sense of comfort. I felt my stomach clench as he cocked his head and studied the unlabeled packet. “Where did you find this?” he asked, his voice calm but tinged with curiosity. "On the path outside," I answered, putting my arms over myself as a shiver went through my body. "Roman, it wasn't there last night. Someone left it for us.” His eyes briefly met mine, and I could see his mind working every scenario and potential risk that this could bring. Sharp and determined, he nodded then took a knife from the kitchen counter and gently cut open the envelope. As he unfolded the contents, I held my breath because the sound of the blade slicing through the thick paper seemed louder than it should have been. One sheet of parchment, yellowed and old was inside. Roman's jaw tensed with every se
