Karis watched his best friend, Charles snort cocaine. He never understood what got people so hooked up on drugs. He had tried it a few times but there was something so souless about escaping loneliness in drugs, he preferred instead to bury it in the soft flesh of a willing woman. Yes he was lonely. He had more money than he could spend in a hundred life times but that was it. The women who flocked him didn't really care about him and neither did the multitude of fans who liked to pretend they were friends nor his Father who only cared that he lived long enough to inherit and bare future heirs. His mother had cared but that was a long time ago, she was dead now.
He felt soft hands come around him and lips press on his ear. Whoever it was was whispering meaningless nothings into his ear and Karis felt like swiping at her. Weren't the rooms supposed to be out of bounds?
Noticing that Charles had finished snorting, he shrugged off the girls arms and went downstairs with his friend, then he saw her.
She was young - they were all young but there was a certain innocence to her youthfulness that was captivating. His eyes took in her face, the wide eyes framed by impossibly long lashes - yet he knew they were natural, perhaps a bit enhanced by mascara but they were nothing like the false lashes that was on trend. She had a little pert nose and bow shaped lips. What he would do to those lips! - or what he would have those lips do to him.
His gaze wondered over her body, noticing the tiny waist and full hips and where the white gown she had on ended, his eyes travelled through her impossibly long legs. The night was going to prove an interesting one.
Her gaze lifted slowly from where it rested on her laps and their eyes met. Karis watched the girls eyes widen, stirring something primal in him then she fled.
Weruche did not stop to consider why she was fleeing the room. She only knew that in those few seconds she had noticed the handsome stranger starring at her and their eyes connected, she had felt something she had never felt before. The force of her emotions shocked her, scared her even and she tried to run from them.
Her heart was racing as she got outside. She felt as if she was on the brink of the unknown. It scared her, yet she felt excited. Was this what it meant to be in love - but she couldn't be in love, she hadn't even gotten to meet the man officially, didn't even know his name. Perhaps this was what her mother had meant when she said men liked to deceive young unsuspecting women like her just so that they can have their way. Was she already falling victim to this man's charm?
"Fleeing a house like that when you see the owner is a very suspicious move if you ask me." A deep voice said from behind her and Weruche flung herself around.
The owner! And what did he mean by 'suspicious.' She remembered Brenda's advice to blend in, a little too late. Drawing in a shaky breath, she extended her hand. "I'm Weruche, you must be Karis."
"Oh it figures!" He said ignoring her hand. "The daughter of puritan Adam Chukwu can't stand a party like this. He stepped closer and slowly traced her trembling lower lip with a finger. "What are you afraid of Weruche?" He stepped even closer, with the gleam of a challenge in his eyes as he lowered his lips to hers.
Weruche could feel a jumble of emotions and a feeling so painful, she swallowed hard. It was her first kiss and somehow it was as if the man that was kissing her did so out of a vendetta she could not even understand.
As quickly as his lips touched hers, Karis drew back. "Why are you crying?" His voice sounded rough.
" Why are you kissing me like you want to punish me?" Her's was a mere whisper. She dropped her head, hiding her gaze and a shame she didn't know wasn't her's.
She felt a cool finger raise her chin yet she stubbornly refused to look at him. "I'm sorry." He said simply and unwittingly, her gaze shot up to meet his. He was searching her face with a new carefulness, like she was a priced possession he had once lost and didn't want to loose again.
"It's wrong of me to judge you based on your father's actions, forgive me."
Weruche merely nodded as his fingers dropped from her chin. She shivered slightly and in an instant, he was shrugging off his jacket and draping it around her shoulders.
"What can I do to make you forgive me?" He asked, still holding eye contact with her.
"Well you can start by giving me a tour of this beautiful garden."
He nodded and took her hand. " So there's this garden at the back you might want to see." he said conversationally, leading her to his mom's garden - well technically it wasn't his Mom's garden, but she had loved the garden so much while she was alive, tending to it herself and after her death, gardeners took over, keeping the place up. It was the only place Karis came when he wanted to be alone, surrounded by memories of a time he had really mattered to someone. He wondered why he was bringing the girl whom he had only just met to the only place that was really his but - she had looked so vulnerable back there, with her lips turned up to his and the tears in her eyes. He felt like an asshole for putting them there and he wanted to make it up to her.
He watched her eyes light up as they walked into the garden. There was such an expression of pure joy on her face, he had never seen such before. All the other girls he had known were always too self conscious, flirting and trying to catch his eye but not this girl standing beside him.
Weruche drew in a breath, inhaling the sweet smell of roses. Was it even possible to have a rose garden out here in Imo state? She felt as if she had stepped into a dream world and would wake up the next day with only a vague memory. Ignoring her racing heart and the man standing beside her, she raised her arms and gave a short twirl as giggles escaped her lips.
"C'mon, let's explore!" said tugging at his hand.
He chuckled. "You forget that this is actually my house and I've been here a thousand times." But he followed her. They went through one flower bed after another, and she stopped to sniff them, even giving them names.
"You wouldn't remember those names by the morning." He laughed when she bent over a rose and named it Daisy. "And I think there's a mix up here, the Daisy is a different flower from the one you have here." He plucked it out, pricking his finger on a thorn. " But this," he said as he handed her the flower. "This suits you best."
She had stood up so that they were standing so close to each other, they were practically sharing the same breath. Weruche wondered if he would kiss her again, she wanted him to, wanted sweeter memories for her first Kiss.
This was just like the romantic settings in the movies. A beautiful garden, a mansion that actually looked like a castle and the handsome heir whom she wished would kiss her again. But this was not the movies, she tried to remind herself. In the movies, he wouldn't be put off in anyway by her sexual inexperience but would go ahead to teach her things she didn't know about love - but that was in the movies! This was not the movies and in real life, Men like Karis only wanted one thing before they got bored and moved on to the next available girl who would only be too willing. She would show him.
She fought to put her warring emotions under control and put on what she hoped was a worldy seductive smile. Leaning up, she brought her lips close to his ears, skimming the side of his lips as she did so. She felt his arm turn to steel under her hand. "It was nice meeting you Karis." She dropped her voice even lower. "But I've got to go. Shall we get back to the house so I can get my bag and tell my friend."
He smiled but there was steel in his eyes. "You're playing with fire little one."
Her face was all innocence. " I don't know what you're talking about."
He was silent. Turning, he led her back to the house. He had a party going on in his sitting room and needed to make an appearance now and again. There was also going to be more than one woman willing to slate the lust stirred in him by this woman. He just wasn't looking forward to it. Those girls were forgettable but this woman standing beside him intrigued him. He always hated women that gave off mixed signals. He liked his sex life uncomplicated but there was a rich blend of innocence and provocativeness that she exuded, he wanted to unravel her.
All the way home, Brenda kept Berating Weruche. She could not understand why Weruche had to pull her out of the party just when everything was getting interesting. She was even more angry that Weruche hadn't cashed into the opportunity of having Karis alone to her self. She believed Weruche had wasted her moment.
"Weruche, honestly I don't understand you at times. Are you not tired of your poverty or has hardship so disturbed your way of thinking that you cannot recognize a blessing when you see one?"
Weruche sighed wearily. " Brenda cut it out okay! Look, if you want to go back into the party, you're free but me, I'm done."
" Yeah. Like I can just go back to the party without the invite -- you made me leave it behind."
Exasperated, Weruche threw up her hands in the air. "Oh Brenda! I'm sorry okay. Can you please stop nagging."
" Fine!" Brenda said. "I'll keep quiet but just remember, this could be your one chance and you've blown it."
" Oh please! Don't sound so dramatic." Weruche dismissed but deep down in her heart, she wondered if it could be true. "There is something though."
"What?" Brenda asked.
" Karis seemed to think I was the daughter of one Adam Chukwu and I wonder why he would have thought so..........."
Weruche didn't hear anything about Karis again after that night neither did she attend any parties again or any gathering at all apart from church gatherings and the days flew by until it was January again and she was back at the state university where she studied Law. She sat at the front of the class and tried to concentrate while the man droned on and on, all the while shooting lascivious glances at her. At the end of his lectures, the lecturer asked Weruche to see him in his office and she was filled with dread. She had heard stories of lecturers preying on their female students and victimizing those who refused to have sex with them but she was yet to experience such. She hoped this was not going to be her first encounter with such a lecturer. "You know, you should buy a ring and then tell him you're married." Weruche turned to see her friend and classmate - Chioma. "
Weruche's eyes scanned the car. It was a Lexus, far from the latest model but still in good shape. She went over to the passenger side front seat and the man leaned over to push open the door for her. "Thanks." She murmured as she got in and strapped up, noticing the man himself didn't have his seat belts on. "So what's the name?" He asked, casting her a side long glance, his hand back on the wheel. "Weruche." "Nice name..... What does it mean?" It means -- aren't you Igbo?" She tried to clean her tear stained face with her palms, wondering how much of a mess she looked. She didn't have her make up on and so didn't have to worry about her mascara or anything bleeding but crying always made her eyes puffy, it wasn't a pretty sight. "No, I'm not Igbo." He answered. He reached into the glove compartment, brought out a clean hankey and handed it to her. "Joseph Yakubu at your service." "
Karis sat in his office in his office in Woodville. The inactivity was killing him. He wondered why his father had insisted he work at the office branch in Woodville for a whole year before he was allowed to take over the running of the company. It was probably Adam Chukwu that put him up to it. Karis wondered how Adam had started off as his father's legal advicer, became his father's best friend and now was practically dictating what his father did. Thinking about Adam made Karis remember Weruche. He smiled. Beautiful but reluctant Weruche. She was going to have to make up her mind soon because he had already made up his. He got up from his chair, stretched and went to stand by the window. The view was great, his office overlooked the beautiful lake Woodville was known for but at this time of the year, there were no beautiful women flashing amazing bodies in bikinis, each trying to out do her neighbor in beauty and class. Instead, fishermen were all over the beach, hawking thei
The moment Weruche got to her street, she knew her suspicions were not wrong. She could see her house clearly from ten feet away, and people were trooping in and out, wearing long faces. They looked like people in mourning. You did not mourn the sick, you mourned the dead. She broke into a run, her back pack that contained most of her possessions wearing her down, and stealing the little strength she had, yet she did not stop. ''Justin, where is Mama? She's not dead, is she?'' She asked grabbing her brother immediately she got into the house. ''Relax Weruche.'' He said in a flash of irritation. ''She's not dead, I told you she was sick now, or did I say she's dead. She's in the room, go and see her. She probably won't be alive for long.'' Weruche let go of her brothers arm as his words stung. Relieved as she was that her mother was still alive, she hated how unconcerned about their mother's health Justin sounded, he also mentioned that she wouldn't be alive for long. He
Lola was being inquisitive again. Karis hated it when she got like that. He was going to have to break things up with her - this time for good. They had both enjoyed an open relationship for sometime now, but things were changing, she had started getting more jealous, more annoying. ''You want to launch a charity you say, but you have no idea what particular charity -'' She said. She was sitting on his laps and snorting coke from a pen, and he had the sudden urge to push her off. He shrugged. '' The girl child education, or anything that sounds as stupid and as good as that. I don't really care. All this is a game, a game between my father, Adam chukwu and I.'' ''And what about his daughter?'' Lola asked getting up suddenly from his lap, and dropping the pen on a table. ''What about whose daughter?'' Karis asked to stall for time. ''Oh don't play dumb with me Karis.'' Lola snapped. ''Adam's daughter - the beautiful Weruche.'' She raised a palm. ''And before you accuse m
''Why Weruche Chukwu! If it isn't a pleasant surprise.'' Karis said from where he was sitted, and Weruche could feel her heart skip several beats. She shouldn't have run off to his house without second thoughts, she should have come up with a plan, but she had been naive enough to think they would continue off from where they had stopped the previous year.... she was even lucky they had let her in. ''I... I... Can I come in?'' Karis merely lifted a brow. She was already in. She had worn the flimsy dress Brenda gave her that put way too much of her creamy skin on display, and her flat ironed her was beginning to kink up again, curling into something mysterious and totally sexy. She was looking good... beautiful, if the reactions of the men she had passed on the road was anything to go by, why wasn't Karis affected by her now as he had been in the past. She smiled and tried to step up her acting game. ''I came because..'' because I couldn't stop thinking about you... that
Weruche stood in front of her wooden wardrobe the next morning, wondering what to wear. She didn't want to make a habit of borrowing clothes from Brenda, and most of Brenda's clothes were hardly appropriate, but hers were faded and worn out. She settled for a gray pencil skirt and a black v neck top that had seen better days, she was just picking up the only hand bag she owned when her brother's voice coming from behind startled her. ''Don't tell me you're going back to school and leaving mother like this - who's responsibility do you think she is?'' Weruche turned to face her brother. From the color of his eyes, he had been smoking a lot already - and it wasn't just cigarettes. ''She is our mother Justin, not just some - responsibility to be foisted on our shoulders.'' ''Skip the fancy English Uche. You put your mother in the state she is, she is yours, your responsibility..... milking her dry for a university degree when none of us ever went through with secondary school.''
The next few weeks we're very hectic ones for Weruche, and she was enjoying every moment. Karis had his her advice and sent out opinion poll to the people of Woodville. The people in the slums had a double vote, that had been very thoughtful of him, since it was the people from her side of the town that needed charity more, but when she and Karis had put together the options, she decided she was going to do a little campaigning on her own before the voting started Karis had asked the people to choose between scholarships and educational grants to skill acquisition and then provision of health facilities. The people in the slums might need charity more, but they were also the most prone to mis-using opportunities. This was one opportunity she wanted utilized. Weruche wondered if it was wrong that she wanted the people to choose education. It actually didn't make sense that you could get enough money to start a petty trade, and then you'd choose to read books instead, but there wa
Weruche woke the next morning feeling a kind of contented happiness. For a while, she was confused as her brain tried to process what she felt then it all came back, the events of the previous day. She stretched and got to her feet as the beautiful sun streamed in from her window bringing with it the pleasant smell of -- she turned to look at the bedside and saw a bunch of roses and her lips curved up in pleasure. How on earth had he been able to manage that while she was asleep? She picked up the roses and buried her nose in them inhaling the sweet fresh scent. What was it girls did when they got flowers.... They put them in a vase. She looked around and found out she did not have one, then she saw the card. 'love Karis.' It read simply and just like that, she felt a shiver of excitement go through her. If only he would say those words while looking into her eyes. She got up and padded on barefoot to the sitting room, she needed to find something to use as a vase. As she got
Follow his heart, she had said. Karis knew where his heart was. He needed to get Weruche back but first, he had to speak with his father. ''St. James does not know who your father is, you don't have to worry about that.'' His father said, fingering a sculpture on his desk. He was sitting too still -- even for Senator Ilobi and his hand on the sculpture was one of many nervous gestures Karis had seen him make since the conversation started and Karis couldn't help wondering what was up. ''So you're saying that he was bluffing all along.'' He had the distinct feeling that his father was on the fence and could either decide to tell him everything or withhold some information. He could only sit still and hope. ''I'm saying--'' The sculpture slipped from his hand and fell to the floor. They both sat for an awkward moment starring at each other before his father picked it up and returned it to it's original place. ''I'm saying that you are my son.'' Karis nodded. ''He wanted to tell h
Karis paced his office, there was so much he needed to do. He had put a pause on his activities at Percove to come home and help out when his family needed him most. The owner of the Atmospheric had given him a week to make up his mind and two days to the expiration of the time, he still had'nt come up with a plan. He should never have stayed that long in Dubai, he hadn't planned to stay that long but then... He picked up his phone and called his father, the old man didn't say a word when he said he was coming over and he imagined St. James calling his father to tell him of the latter's visit to the Atmospheric and probably to drop a warning or two, Karis didn't put that past St. James. He was going to have to do something about the editor of the Daily. If news that he could get double crossed spread, he was in for it as a businessman in New York but before he took care of the editor, he was going to need to take care of the root cause of the problem -- the owner of the Atmospher
Karis was waiting for her on the front porch when she got back and her heart skipped a beat when he got up as the Rolls pulled into the drive way. She stepped out of the car into his waiting arms. ''Have you missed me?'' He asked. ''Just as I have missed you.'' And just like that, all Weruche's anger and feelings of neglect were gone. He pulled away from the embrace to search her eyes with his midnight blue ones. ''I am supposed to ask how you day went.'' He said huskily. ''My day was... I went to see the Burj khalifa, very wonderful view of --'' ''But all I can think of is doing this.'' He stole her breath away in the longest, sweetest kiss she had ever had. Considering the fact that before now, she had only been kissed twice in her life she didn't have a lot of experience for comparison but -- he deepened the kiss and she lost all sense of reasoning, she couldn't think let alone compare. Suddenly, they couldn't make it fast enough to the bedroom, his expert fingers searched a bod
Weruche sat on the bed in the room Tessa let her stay in and tried to gather the courage to call Karis secretary, a Miss April Vonn. It was one thing to call Karis, even though he hadn't given her his number, using a restricted line to call her, but it was another thing to call his secretary acting like a female scorned who did not want to let go. She dialed the number and the woman answered immediately, all cool and efficient. ''April Vonn on the line, who I'm I Speaking with?'' Weruche suddenly lost her courage. ''I.. it's ...Ms. Vonn, I know this is a bit unusual but I need your help.'' There was a pause on the other side then -- ''You're still going to have to tell me who you are.'' ''I ... my name is Weruche, and I met Karis when I was --'' The woman blew out a breath. ''Karis! See, let me give you an advice, woman to woman. He's probably forgotten you as you should him. Allow whatever was between you to end on a happy note, don't drag it till it turns sour -- but off
It had become a routine for Weruche to wait till her father left, and then sneak off to the arena. She should have gone back to California by now, she knew. But somehow, she could not shake off the feeling that going would mean that she was running, and as wonderful as it sounded for her to run away from all her pain at the moment, she knew that if she did run, she may never be able to upturn the bounty her brother had set on her head.So far, he had not hit her again, and she was beginning to suspect he knew that she was sneaking off anytime he was not around, but if he knew something, he was saying nothing. Trying to be hopeful, she hurried off to the arena. The man in the ring who seemed to be dominating the fight was leaner than Peter, Weruche noticed as she got closer, his hair was black, shorter and he seemed to be putting in a lot of effort, more effort than Karis usually put into a fight but it seemed to be paying off. It seemed the other three people in the ring were battling
Karis woke up the next morning with a slight headache and an anger he could not place. He shook his head in a bid to clear the fog but that only made the pounding worse. He got up, threw on a track suit and a pair of trainers and decided to go jogging. Bathed, dressed and feeling a lot better, he arrived at the office by ten am, when all hell broke loose. April his secretary rushed into the office, her heels clicking against the tiles and she had lost some of the grace she always infused into her step, she seemed very upset. "Good morning Karis, I --" "Good morning to you too April, calm down a bit and take a breath." She obeyed, breathing in slowly and then out. "Okay, first of all, I removed the morning papers from your desk, I thought you'll need a heads up before you see them and also I --" Karis stretched out his hand, palm up. "Bring in all the papers April, then you can continue talking." "Listen to me first Karis, I --" He raised a brow. "Now April." April threw up

Trying to get a grip on himself and control his emotion, he pushed himself up from her yet she continued trashing about in the throes of passion, muttering the words that had stopped him in the first place -- no, over and over again till he wondered if she had been speaking to herself and not to him all along. He grabbed both of her hands and shook her firmly. "Stop it Uche -- Weruche!" She freed her hands from his as she finally sat up, with her expression half hidden from him by her hair, her lips swollen from his kisses, she regarded him out of the corner of her eyes with a ne
