Chapter 1: The long night

With my heart still pounding, I run back to the house and take refuge in my bedroom.  That man is one of the new hires, how did I not notice him earlier?  He is so tall, tanned and more handsome then Brad could ever be.  Not to mention, the muscles on him.

Laying on the bed, I remember staring into those hungry green eyes, thinking that I wouldn't mind if his eyes looked that way at my naked body and his hands caressed my skin.  There is something to say for a hard working man.  Compared to Brad's soft perfectly manicured nails and fingers, his are rough and callused.

I wonder how that would feel against my soft delicate skin.  To feel the strength ooze from his finger tips as he grabs my hips and makes love to me with my back up against the wall.  I long to wrap my petite legs around his waist and feel him grow against me.  Something I have yet to ever feel.

When I had the brief affair in Los Angeles, it was nothing special.  He lacked imagination and I could tell that he was only in it for the sex, so it didn't last very long.  Unimpressed with men in general I haven't repeated it since, but there is something about this man that sparks my interest.

Why is he here?  Brad only hires older men and ex-cons, because they are cheap labor who can't go anywhere else.  He doesn't seem to fit either one.  So once again, why is he here cleaning out horse stalls, shoveling crap out onto the dung heaps?  Curious, I lay there and try to figure out how I can find out more about him, without Brad knowing.

Later in the evening, Marissa comes in and asks me if I want anything before she leaves for the night.  Shaking my head, I have a thought.  Maybe she has heard something about the new hires.  Usually, she knows all the gossip about the workers and fills me in on what has been happening.

Marissa, a 24 year old from Italy, started working here about a year ago.  When she moved to the U.S. she didn't have a cent to her name and her cousin set her up with this position.  Her cousin Tonya, also from Italy, got married and her husband forced her to go back to Italy with him, leaving the position open for Marissa to take over.

"Marissa, do you know anything about the new hire that is about 30, tall, dark, handsome and doesn't say much?  He is mysterious and I have been wondering why a man like him would be working in the stables.  We both know that Brad only hires ex-cons for that job usually.

She looks back at me, as I play with the pillows on the bed.  "I heard that he murdered someone and was put away for 8 years.  I sure wouldn't mind though, if he slipped a bit of steel deep in me."  She winks at me, laughing.

Trying not to show that I care, I giggle and roll my eyes at her.  Commenting to her, "I'm sure you would, but if you get pregnant you wouldn't be able to do your job.  Brad is clear on that."

"I think it would be worth it.  We would make beautiful children together, don't you agree?"  She starts laughing even harder and it makes me incredibly jealous.

Rolling off the bed and standing up, I say, "What if he doesn't want you?"  I stare her down and immediately wish I didn't say it.  Her smile turns to a frown and she looks at the floor downtrodden.

Searching for words to make the situation better, I settle for, "I'm so sorry Marissa, I didn't mean anything by it.  It has just been a long day and it's wearing on me."

She starts to walk towards the door and turns, "Goodnight, ma'am."

Taking a step towards her, I tell her, "Goodnight, Marissa."

I watch as she leaves and shuts the door behind her.  Walking to the window, I fold my arms and stare at the pane of glass.  The rhythm of the rain reminds me of something.

Tap.  Tap tap.  Tap.  Tap. Tap tap.  Tap.

It echoes throughout the room and I realize what it reminds me of, horses trotting on a brick road.  Remembering when I was a child, my dad never wanted me to ride by myself.  One day, I snuck out to the stable and took off with Mable.  The two of us were free for a short time and we rode to the nearest town, where they had a brick road.

Just shortly after that expedition, my dad put a lock on her stall so I couldn't take her out by myself anymore.  I hated it.  There were so many times that I tried to bribe the hired help to look the other way, that eventually my dad just gave in and let me ride her again.

Turning in for the night, I shut off the lights and slip under the covers.  When my head hits the pillow, I fall fast asleep.

The warmth of the sun beating down on my back, feels so good after a long afternoon. Mable, snorts and turns her head to the side as I enjoy nature and watch the birds flying above our heads. We are ready to head back to the stable, when I hear the steady trot of another horse in the distance, echoing throughout the valley. Looking back, I see the tall gentleman from the day before and watch as he closes in on our distance. Mable senses something and turns around just before a rattlesnake strikes her leg. She raises up on her back legs and knocks me off. Sitting on the ground, all I can see is Mable laying on her side groaning. Pushing up off the ground, I get to my feet and run over to her. She has fallen on top of the rattlesnake and crushed it, but not before it struck her again. I can see the two bites swelling up as she lays there in pain. Not knowing what to do, I stand up and flag down the stable hand

I wake up in a cold sweat. Peeling my bedsheets off of my naked body, I get up to grab a set of fresh ones from the hall closet. When I touch the wood floor, I shiver from the cold and hurry to put my robe on. After I put on my robe and slippers, I creep out into the hallway and open the linen closet. The last thing I want to do is wake up Brad. He might be drunk or even question why I am up, and as far as I am concerned this is not the time or place to be discussing my dreams with him. Matter of fact, I don't ever want to talk to him again, but I don't have a choice. Knowing that he feels that way about another woman makes my skin crawl. Looking through the fabrics, I pick the Egyptian cotton powder blue sheets and quietly sneak back to my room. Taking off the wet ones and replacing them with the fresh sheets, I take off my robe and slippers and then climb back into bed. I lay there for a while, thinking ab

Waking up, I realize the reason. I hear the phone ringing on the other side of the room and slip out from under the covers to answer it. Immediately wishing that I hadn't gone to sleep without putting on a nightgown, I shiver while grabbing the phone. Retrieving it, I retreat to the warmth of the covers and look at who called. Nora, a neighbor that quickly became a close friend of mine just after we moved in. She is 30 and works for Brad's company, as a secretary. Calling her back, I ask while yawning and stretching, "What's up, Nora?" Sounding anxious, she answers right away, "You would never believe who and what I saw last night at the office." Not wanting to really know, because I have an awful feeling that has started creeping up inside, I hesitate. Finally saying something, I ask, "Do I want to know?" "Girl, your husband was caught eating out one of his clients last night. Jessica, one

After reading for several hours, I decide to go for a walk. I go through my closet and choose a comfortable pair of jeans and a nice royal blue sweater that my dad bought for me last year as a present. Putting them on, I model in the mirror for myself and realize that something is missing. Placing my sapphire heart earrings in, I once again model in front of the mirror. Perfect. Satisfied with my appearance, I shut my closet and pull on my light brown leather fashion boots that I have picked out for the day. I always cringe a little when I start to walk in them, because they make this percussive sound on the wood floors that echoes throughout the whole house. Standing up, I walk to the door of the bedroom and open it, hesitating before shutting it behind me as I look inside for anything I forgot. I turn the corner of the hallway and walk to the door. Not seeing Brad, I march out the door before he decides to stop

After lunch, Marissa takes off and I find myself completely alone. I sit around for a while reading again, but then decide to be nosey and go through Brad's things in his bedroom. What could possibly go wrong? After all, he won't be home for hours if he shows up at all tonight. Pacing back and forth, I try to figure out if I should or not and finally just march up the stairs straight into his bedroom. Looking through his drawers, I find nothing and then turn to his desk. Right away, I have this bad feeling when I see a drawer half way open and inside a picture is bearly visible. Opening the drawer the rest of the way, I stand back and take in a deep breath before sighing. Shaking my head in disbelief, I approach the drawer and pick up the photo of Brad and an unknown woman in a compromising position. When I go to put it back, I notice a manilla envelope underneath and take it out to open it.

On the way to the kitchen, I catch a glimpse of Dean outside the front door and walk over, trying to see what is going on. Opening the door, I notice an older man who I have never seen before, standing by Dean and it seems like they are in a confrontation. Both of them turn to face me, before I ask, "What seems to be the problem here?" Dean speaks up first, saying matter of factly, "My parole officer doesn't believe that I am employed here and is trying to throw me back in prison. Is there any way you can verify my employment to him for me?" Looking at the older gentleman, I ask politely, "May I know who I am talking to?" He nods and answers, "I am Mr. Conway, Dean's parole officer. I was notified

Wiggling and shrieking, he tries his hardest to escape the “fingers of death”, but eventually I succeed and tickle him till he screams out, “Mommmmmy, stop.” I glance at his face to see him laughing so hard his face is all red and scrunched up. It makes me chuckle and then I watch him laugh so hard he rolls clear off the bed when I grab his ankles and tickle his foot again. This tickle monster knows how to play the game and win. “O.K., O.K., it’s time for bed. Now that we have gotten out all that extra energy, you should be able to fall asleep right away. Or do we need the tickle monster to strike again?” I ask jokingly while tucking him in and stopping to wiggle my fingers. “No

“Did you get the cake?” I ask Johnson quietly, so Nora doesn’t hear. He nods before he picks up the bag from under the table and shows me. Today is Nora’s birthday. She has just turned 32 and is so excited, because Johnson asked her to marry him this morning. The first thing she did as soon as he gave her the ring and proposed, was to say yes and then call me to let me know. Screaming over the phone, I thought she was being murdered, till she finally spit it out. I can’t explain how happy I felt when I found out. She really deserves a happy ending. “Did you bring what I asked you to?” He looks at me nervously. I wink and whisper, “There is absolutely no way I would forget it.” As soon as I say it, Nora walks back in the room. “What are you two whispering about over there? However, this version of Donovan Montrose is grown up and definitely better looking. At about 6 and a half foot tall, with dirty blonde hair and blue eyes, a completely flawless complexion and a strong jawline, he is picture perfect. Literally like a model who just walked out of GQ. Not to mention, his muscles. He has the physique of a world class athlete. When I stand there staring at him and don’t invite him in right away, he asks, “Am I intruding?” Shaking my head, I reply quickly while motioning him in. “No, not the least. I can just imagine he is smiling from ear to ear over the phone like he used to in high school. That boy used to give me the creeps because every time I turned around he was staring at me. All my friends would kid me about my creepy boyfriend and that we should just get a room or something. I really had no clue that he liked me that way, I thought that they were just being idiots. I saw a newspaper article about your fashion design business and starting thinking about you again. Do you realize in high school, I actually had a huge crush on you?" Donovan, the man on the phone says with a deep male voice. "I had no idea." I reply softly and my voice trails off when I realize that Dean is starting to get really jealous. Not wanting to cause a conflict, I decide to end the call quickly and say, "Hey, can I call you tomorrow? It has been a really long day and I am tired." "Sure. What time?"
