Rowan couldn't help but ask, "Have you seen that necklace?"

The man's smile remained, but there was a hint of bitterness tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Without attempting to offer an explanation, he reassured Rowan, "I'll clarify things with them later and request that they release you first. I truly apologize for getting you involved in this today."

His sincerity in those words stood in stark contrast to the cynicism he had displayed earlier when the man in the suit was present.

Rowan found herself puzzled, unsure which version of the man was the real one.
