Rowan was taken aback by Maria's words, her mind reeling with disbelief. She had to ask for confirmation, hoping against hope that it was all a misunderstanding. "Is David... at home this morning?" she inquired, her voice trembling.

Maria nodded, her eyes widening with surprise. Breaking free from her usual reticence, she spoke hurriedly. "Yes, madam. He's been here since morning. I was just as shocked as you are.
