The shots kept coming, passing over the cars that we shielded our bodies with.

“I don't think these guys are professional,” Madeline said.

“No, they just want to hit something,” I gave a sigh of relief when we heard the police siren.

“They seem to have stopped,” Madeline said, getting up.

“No, stay down Madeline,” I brought her down immediately and another round of bullets went through our heads.

“That was too close,” she said, breathing heavily.

“Until the cops get here, we don't move,” I said to her.

She nodded fidgeting. Madeline's eyes were wide with fear, her gaze darting back and forth between the cars and the surrounding buildings. I held her tight, trying to shield her from harm.

"Stay calm, they'll be here soon," I whispered, trying to reassure her.

The sirens grew louder, and I could see the flashing lights reflecting off the nearby windows. The shooters seemed to sense the approaching police, too, and their gunfire slowed to less erratic shots.
