Louisa can't stop thinking about Liam as she goes about her duties at work.

Her lack of concentration makes the day seem longer than normal.

Unable to wait anymore, she makes Evelyn cover up for her for the rest of the day while she makes her way home.

It is Liam's first day at prep school.

Although it isn't the high-priced, private school in an exclusive setting that the boy had envisioned, she leaves work early to make his first day there memorable.

She wants to be home early to hear the details of his first day at school, celebrate the new chapter with him, and probably take him for a walk afterward.

But the sight that welcomes her makes her stop dead in her tracks as she arrives at her apartment in high spirits.

Liam slouches on the center couch of the living room, writhing and crying loudly, uncontrollably.

His backpack is thrown aside, and his school clothes are crushed.

The nanny she had hired to stay with him during the day, Bem, is standing clumsily in a corner,

Louisa's concentration is constantly being disrupted by the distant hum of the metropolis outside. Her painstakingly prepared slides for the following day's pitch shine on her laptop screen. Her brow furrows as she sits at her dining table, tapping her pen on the wooden surface while clicking through bullet points. Except for the occasional rumbling of a passing car, the flat is abnormally quiet. Louisa has a rare opportunity to focus without interruption because Liam is out with his babysitter, Bem. Hearing a knock at the door, Louisa checks the time; it is 5:47 p.m. She lets out a sigh and lowered her shoulders. Fred frequently drops by without warning, but tonight, of all nights, she isn't feeling particularly up to it. Nevertheless, she proceeds to the door and opens it to see Fred standing there with his hands tucked carelessly into his jacket pockets. "Working again?" he inquires, his tone warm yet playful, his smile crooked. Louisa smiles at him wearily and

Louisa's pulse thunders in her ears as the moment freezes in time. Her gaze darts across the room, first to the audience, then to the judges, and last to Karen and the other representative from her company, who are wearing terrible looks of helplessness. The clicks of cameras and frantic texting on phones punctuate the swell of voices in the crowd. There is nothing she can do to stop her impeccable reputation, which has been painstakingly cultivated over the years, from collapsing in real-time. At the center table of the Modu Techs delegation, Cordelia sits with confidence in her sharp ivory blazer. Louisa sniffs, her breath hitching as she hears a sound at her door. She quiets down to listen well and it turns out to be a knock. At first, the knocks are timid, as if the guest is unsure whether or not to disturb her. She ignores it, unwilling to entertain any guest at the moment, but then it becomes firm, deliberate, and relentless.“Louisa! I know you're in there, open the door.”Her head snaps up and she blinks, surprised at the familiar deep voice on the other side of the door.It can't be Kingsley. Her heart skips and her chest tightens. Why did it have to be him, of all people, who showed up to see her in this mess? Why him? He's the one person she could have given anything to avoid at the moment but what now?He probably knows Liam would be unavailable at present, so what exactly is he here for? To add a pinch of salt to her injury? She shuts her eyes tight and places her hands on her ears, blocking out the sound, and to her relief, it stops after a few minutes.Relieved,

The tension in the room is evident as Evelyn struggles to answer the phone. "Liam? What's wrong, sweetie?” Her voice instantly softens as she asks. Liam's little, tentative voice sounds on the other end. “Could you come get me, Aunt Evelyn? Mom's line is not connecting, and I….I no longer want to be here.” Evelyn furrows her brows. "Liam, what do you mean? It's not yet time to leave, is it?” “No, but I need to leave now. Please, I can't stay here anymore.” Liam clarifies quickly, sniffing as well, which makes Evelyn wonder if he's crying too. “Alright, I'll come get you. Sit tight and don't go anywhere, okay?” Liam whispers, "All right," in a barely audible voice. Hanging up, Evelyn takes a moment to gather herself. As she raises her head, her eyes meet Kingsley's Louisa's, they had been watching her with worried expressions. Evelyn says solemnly. “The children at school are taunting him again; he sounds as if it's not the first time. He wants to leave there imme

Fred had never been more in tune with the art of multi-tasking—running, scrolling, and huffing out curse words all at once. The hospital corridor barely sees the back of his lab coat flutter when he bolts out after Linda’s cryptic comment about Louisa. As he bursts out into the crisp evening air, Fred fiddles with his phone. He still cannot believe his eyes as he keeps gaping at the blog post blaring accusations like a bad tabloid: "Behind the Curtain: Louisa's Scandalous Bargain with Kingsley Wills!" It claimed she’d been sleeping with Kingsley in exchange for business favors for the past five years. Five years! Fred would’ve laughed if it hadn’t punched him in the gut. Five years ago, he hadn't met Louisa yet, but he had known her to be a workaholic for the past four years they'd met. She doesn't even have a man. But this? This is garbage. But his gut still twisted. He blasts out into the evening traffic, clutching a half-eaten tuna sandwich as he maneu

As Louisa enters the modern, marble-floored lobby of Palmer Tech, her heart hammers against her ribs. It is loud today, the normal hum of morning activity, the click of heels on polished tiles, the flurry of conversations. Every glance is laced with mistrust, and every fleeting smile is a disguised dagger. As she passes small groups of workers hunched by coffee makers or organizing files at their workstations, she hears faint murmuring. ‘They are discussing me,’ she thinks inwardly. Willing herself to remain composed, she tightens her grip on her bag and adjusts her blazer. The fluorescent lights overhead create a strong glare, making the path to the boardroom appear longer than normal. Her uneasiness is evident from her reflection on the glass walls: her shoulders are slumped, and her stride is a bit too quick. She stops and inhales deeply when she arrives at the boardroom's hefty wood doors. She reminds herself, ‘You can do this,’ and then she pushes them open. T

Kingsley is inside her house, even though she had assured Martha that she would let go of him only a few hours earlier. Martha may misinterpret things if she sees him with her. But before Louisa can come up with an excuse, to dismiss Martha or go out with her, Kingsley speaks. "Who is it?" The sound of Kingsley's footsteps approaching was followed by his voice coming from behind her. Louisa's face becomes pale as she turns slightly. "It is….” When Kingsley comes into view, he spots Martha standing at the door, and his eyebrows shoot up in surprise. "Martha?" Martha's expression is unreadable as her eyes darts between them. Fred had been getting ready for the evening all day. He had selected one of the best bars in the city, renowned for its quiet jazz, cozy atmosphere, and wine selection that would please even the pickiest connoisseur. He had gone above and beyond by placing an advance order for Linda's favorite meal and a bottle of wine that she had mentioned in passing months prior during a conversation at work. Fred is early, straightening his tie and gazing around the table he had reserved at the window, which overlooks the lights of the city. It has to be flawless. Fred's breath sticks in his throat as Linda enters, looking stunning. She accessorized her figure-hugging black dress with subtle jewelry that gleams in the low light. Fred's pulse skips a beat as her hair falls over her shoulders and she walks with assurance. Her voice is pleasant, yet tinged with suspicion as she says, "Fred. It looks so good in here, " as she looks around, admiring the bar. Fred gets up and drags her

Standing before Martha's hotel suite door, Louisa pauses. She knocks softly after her knuckles briefly hover over the glossy wood. The door opens as the faint sound of footfall nears, and Martha appears, her face instantly changing from one of surprise to one of cautious mistrust. "Louisa?" Martha's hand tightens on the doorframe as she speaks sharply. "How are you aware of my lodging arrangements?" Louisa smiles slightly, disarmingly. "Martha, you're my friend. Even if you don't want me to, I would be aware of your location. Martha pauses, obviously surprised by the answer, but her skepticism remains unshaken. Reluctantly, she moves aside to let Louisa in. It is a tidy, impersonal room, the sort of transitory place that is less like a home and more like a waiting room. Louisa calmly and deliberately sits down in one of the window-facing chairs. Martha crosses her arms and stays upright. "Louisa, why are you here?" Martha speaks in a clipped tone. "You're wasting

Although Louisa is hardly aware of it, the R&D department at Palmer Tech is bustling as usual. The cursor on her computer screen is blinking impatiently as she sits at her desk and stares blankly. Her team is busy around her, talking about testing plans and prototypes, but their voices are muffled by the flurry of ideas racing through her head. "Miss Emerson?" A hesitant voice pierces her fog. One of her less experienced developers, Carter, is clutching a tablet. "I want to present the project's revised design specifications to you. I believe we've resolved the—” "Have you checked it again?" Louisa abruptly interrupts him with a snap. Carter blinks in surprise at her tone. "Yeah, but I figured you'd like to—" "Why bring it to me if you think it is good enough? Carter, do your job. I don't have time to obsess over every little thing.” There is silence in the room. Carter takes a step back, holding the iPad as her crew exchange suspicious looks. “I apologize. I'll che

John put an arm around her, his fingers idly making patterns on her shoulder while they laughed quietly at a ridiculous story from the day before. However, when the laughing subsides, John becomes aware of Evelyn's aloof expression. He tilts his head to gaze at her and remarks, "You're quiet tonight," gently. "Are you still concerned about us? The rumpled blankets are evidence of Kingsley's restless night as he sleeps, sprawled over his bed. Except for the dim golden light that filters through the borders, the room is dark and subdued, due to the closed drapes. The floor is littered with empty champagne bottles, a silent reminder of his fruitless attempts to block out his thoughts. His tie dangles loosely from the bedpost, and his suit jacket is crumpled in one area. He is startled out of his wits by a knock on the door. Unwilling to confront anyone, he moans, but the knock is louder this time. "Boss? It's Hardy. Are you inside?” Kingsley rubs his hand over his scruffy face and mumbles a curse. "Come in," he rasps at last. With a creak, the door opens, and Hardy enters, his worried features inscribed on his face. He looks around the room right away, soaking in the commotion.
