CHAPTER 4: Mist (ii)
Louisa blinks, unable to believe her ears. “You mean the same Wills Corporation in Australia?”
“Yes Louisa. Chief Wills retired last month and his son has since assumed the position as the new CEO. He is here now for a Merger & Acquisition.” Mr Ashby explains patiently, before adding, “I heard you too met last night and you seemed to know each other.” Mr Ashby concludes, a hint of mischief evidenct in his tone.
Louisa shifts in her seat, uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation. “I don't, not really.” She lies, unwilling to take the conversation further.
“Alright ladies, please get to work. Louisa, do not forget that you absolutely need to convince CEO Wills, okay? We need his cooperation and investment the most.” Mr Ashby replies, taking the hint but reiterating the need to get Kingsley Wills at all costs.
“I'll try my best.” Louisa muttered, looking down at her toes, unable to meet Mr Ashby's gaze.
“Get all the relevant documents from the appropriate quarters and familiarize yourselves with the project. That will be all.” Mr Ashby concludes.
“Alright sir, we'll get to work now.” Evelyn speaks, taking Louisa's hand and leaving the office.
They both stroll the floors of the building after being dismissed by CEO Ashby. The unhappiness in Louisa's demeanor is evident. She sluggishly paddles after Evelyn. After a while, she stops walking altogether and just stares into the space in front of her.
Evelyn, trying to break the somber mood, playfully taps Louisa's shoulder with her own but Louisa doesn't even notice, lost in her own thought.
Undeterred, Evelyn nudges her continuously until she cracks a small smile. “Hey girl! it's not that bad. See, Kingsley might be spiteful but I do not think he hates you as much as you think.”
“You don't know what you're talking about Eve. You should have seen his face last night when we were alone.” Louisa bemoaned, grabbing the back of her head in exasperation.
“Why then did he save you from the thirsty, blood sucking wife of Alan?”
The two friends burst out laughing, drawing the attention of their colleagues.
Evelyn holds Louisa and they both head to Louisa's office to continue their conversation.
“Girl, you need to do what you need to do, okay? This is your job and I know you love your job. Just meet him tomorrow, act like the professional that you are. Do not even look at him as if you two have met before. That will work, trust me. Just do your job.” Evelyn advised, her face serious.
Louisa sighs, supporting her head with her hand. “I wish you could go with me but I know you are occupied. Can I really do this alone?”
“Yes you can girl, have you met yourself? The beautiful, strong and intelligent Louisa can achieve anything when it comes to business.” Evelyn asserts, gesticulating a big deal to hype and assure her friend.
Smiling, Louisa brightens up and prepares to start the day's work while Evelyn reaches for the door to head to her office too. “ Thank you Eve, I'll see you at lunch.”
“See ya!”
*******************************
In a large, modern conference room in the newly acquired Wills Corporation subsidiary, the room is filled with a mix of excitement and tension as the CEO, Kingsley Wills presides over the meeting.
Kingsley Wills clears his throat and begins, “I do not believe in sugarcoating it wasting time. Our company's success is built on dedication, discipline, hardwork and results. Anything less is unacceptable.”
Looking at the high ranking employees and officials straight in the eyes, he continues, his tone firm and eyes focused like cat with it's eyes on a piece of fish.
“Today marks a major milestone in this company's history. This merger brings together two complementary businesses, creating a more stronger, capable and competitive entity. The onus is on each and every one of us here today to make history. Let us shape a brighter future and create long term value. Together, we can do this!” He concluded, leaning back in his chair while observing the body language of his audience.
The air is charged with an almost palpable energy. The room as silent as a graveyard except for the wheezing breathing of the chief secretary sounding like a locomotive engine.
Muffled whispered of awe circulate among the company officials, punctuated by nods of agreement. There is no telling that a new era had come.
“Excuse me.” The CEO's personal assailant, Hardy enters and whispers into his ear.
“I look forward to your cooperation ladies and gentlemen. Do excuse me.” He concludes and exits the conference room, followed by Hardy.
“The president is requesting a report about the merger’s status.” Hardy stated dutifully.
“My father called?” Kingsley asked, evidently surprised, “why won't the old man rest? Making business calls on a vacation.” Kingsley throws up his hands, gesticulating.
Getting to his office, he enters and takes his seat while issuing instructions to Hardy.
“I will take care of my father, Hardy. I want you to schedule a meeting with the marketing team for 3pm to discuss the upcoming campaign launch.”
“Also, make sure my calendar is clear for the next three hours so I can focus on the merger report. And notify me if there is any changes in my schedule.” Kingsley concludes, opening his laptop and typing away.
“Understand sir,” Hardy nods then adds as an afterthought “speaking of changes in schedule, there's an adjustment in your schedule tomorrow.”
“What adjustment?” Kingsley asked without looking away from his laptop.
“You were supposed to meet the representative of Palmer Tech next week to discuss your investment in Mist but it seems the timeline for the project has been adjusted. They requested a meeting so I fixed them for 12pm tomorrow since you do not have a lot of engagement.”
“That means a team has been assembled for the project, that's fine. Did you go through the market research and diligence report of the project?
“Yes sir.”
“Okay then, who is coming on behalf of the team?” Kingsley inquires, reaching for a glass of water placed before him and bringing it to his lips.
“It's the manager of their R&D team, Miss Louisa Emerson.”
Kingsley chokes on his water, a bit of it spilling on the table and laptop before him.
“WHAT!!?”
Chapter 5: The Power Tripping CEO (I)“The project manager is Miss Emerson sir,” Hardy reaffirms, surprised by his boss’s sudden outburst and quickly cleans the mess on the table. “She is the manager of R&D team 1.”Massaging his forehead with his finger tips, Kingsley let out a heavy sigh. Why does the beautiful, she devil keep crossing paths with him? “Wait!” he thought, “what if this is deliberate?” Knowing that woman, he wouldn't be surprised if she has deliberately planted herself in the project, knowing full well that he is the major investor. What if this is another scheme to plant herself in his life like a leech?” After all, she is the queen of deceit, judging by how she successfully deceived him five years ago.No, he can't let this happen. No, he won't. There is no way in hell he is going to watch her make a fool of him the second time. Once is enough. How dare she?“Listen to me Hardy.” Kingsley clears his throat and begins, taking a firm, serious tone. “I want you to cal
At the Mark Hotel penthouse suite, Kingsley reclines on the huge comfy sofa. He had just finished some paperwork and took a cold shower. He decides to rest for a few hours before proceeding with the monthly sales report of the company he had just acquired. Moreover, his heart had been palpitating for a while. He knew he needed a rest, having been working relentlessly since he arrived in New York. It seems strange though, he had been fine ever since he had his cardiomyopathy transplant five years ago. So, why is his heart acting up?But then again, he has not been consistent with his health check up for about a year now. Speaking of which, he has to get one, and as soon as possible too. He picks up his phone and dials Hardy, “I need you to book me an appointment with professor Wesley at Kings County Hospital Centre. I'd like to have a full body check up.”“Alright sir, I'll do that immediately.” Hardy replies from the other end of the phone.“And have you heard from Mr Ashby of Palme
“I apologize sir, but i am simply conveying my boss's position and it would be expected that a CEO of your caliber should know to be cordial and professional at all times.” Louisa states slowly and firmly, clasping her hands tightly around her handbag in front of her. Her face is devoid of any emotion and she appears unflinshed about Kingsley's outburst. This infuriates Kingsley the more. He had expected to see her recoil and probably cover her face in embarrassment. But here she is, undaunted and even lecturing him…the audacity. With his penetrating eyes fixed on her, he strolls towards her in slow steps, expecting her to cower and move back but Louisa stands her ground without moving a muscle, hoping desperately that she doesn't look as terrified as she feels.“You dare lecture me in my building? You're a fine one one to talk about manner and professionalism. I hope you're not impersonating someone by being here?”Louisa bit her lower lip nervously. That is one thing she is guilty o
They both made arrangements to see each other the very following day. They were so excited. On the set date, Kingsley arrived at their agreed location looking his best and pacing up and down, anxiously waiting for Martha. They agreed to meet by 2pm but she didn't show up. Kingsley felt she was probably just running late and decided to wait for her. After two hours, he started getting restless. He called her phone numerous times but he couldn't get to her. Still, Kingsley wasn't about to give up. He was prepared to wait for as long as he had to. But after three hours, he started feeling dejected and disappointed. He was about to leave and seek another way to get in touch with her when he saw a beautiful woman coming his way.He stood rooted at a spot as the lovely young woman with long golden brown hair strolled towards him. Kingsley's spirit, which had been dampened by disappointment, lightened up immediately, as he could see the unique handband , just like his own, tightly aroun
Savagely, recklessly, he disposed of her blouse and tore away her bra. And he covered her hot, fevered flesh with his mouth and his hands, cupping her breasts, teasing and leaving her trembling in need. She could feel him everywhere, and the pleasure was exquisite. His fingers and his lips stroked and caressed her, they licked her, they flickered sparks over her shoulders, along the column over her throat, across the top of her breasts. She was restless, impatient, anxious and melting inside but Kingsley set the rhythm and wouldn't give in….not so fast. Finally, at the exact moment she thought she would shatter to pieces, his hands braced her hips and with one thrust, he slipped inside. Sleek, golden, liquid, he felt impossibly devastatingly good. She met each stroke, wanting more of him, taking all he had to give. Swifter, farther, higher, deeper. And together, they found their bliss. They touched the sky. ******************************That marked the beginni
Fortunately, his device was within an arm's length and although he wasn't audible nor coherent, a quick dial brought the hotel management and emergency services to his suite. He was administered first aid by means of an Automated External Defibrillator and then he was rushed to the hospital. However, the hospital couldn't treat him efficiently either as his medical records were not available. All they could do was provide immediate stabilization and collaborate with air ambulances, in order to make arrangements for specialized transportation, equipped with necessary medical equipment and staff and fly him back to Australia.Kingsley was operated on and it was successful. He joined his family company after full recovery and started making waves as a businessman and later as a CEO. ******************************* PRESENT DAY At Kings County Hospital Centre, Kingsley has an appointment with the esteemed Professor Wesley for a full body check up. He
Louisa stand rooted to the ground, her mouth wide open and eyes bulging so much, it looks like it would pop. “What the hell is going on? How is this happening?” Louisa thought, mentally slapping herself for leaving Liam's room when she did. “But, what is Kingsley even doing here, he is not a patient anymore. Is he?” She wondered while retreating to a corner where she won't be seen by Kingsley or Liam. She keeps peering at them from the corner, wondering what the two of them could be talking about while being all smiley at each other. After a while, they shook hands. Kingsley walks off with a wide grin plastered on his face while Liam waves childishly after him, smiling widely as well.Louisa breathes a sigh of relief, and walks briskly towards Liam, holding his hand firmly and taking him away with her.“Mommy, what happened?” Liam asked after his mom closes the door behind her.“You tell me, Liam? Who was that man you were talking and smiling at?” Louisa asks, standing with her arms
Fred and Louisa looks at each other, feeling flustered but Fred quickly regains his composure. “Yes Linda, just friends.” He replies, giving Linda a look that suggests she should be on her way already. But Linda has other plans.Ignoring the ‘be on your way’ look that Fred directs at her, Linda addresess Louisa. “Hi Louisa,” she starts, offering her right hand for a handshake. “I am a friend to Dr Fred as well. It's nice to meet you.” She concludes with a smile.“Same here, Linda. “ Louisa replies, taking Linda's outstretched hand.“Alright then, you wouldn't mind if I joined you two for a stroll, would you?” Linda asked, directing her question to Louisa, looking at her expectantly.“Of course not Linda, you're welcome to join us. “ Louisa replies whole heatedly, gesticulatingly waving Linda over.“We were actually heading back to the building, Linda…..” Fred cuts in trying to avoid Linda walking with them but Louisa stops him.“Common on Fred, don't be rude. Let's all go drink togeth
John becomes more and more uneasy as he goes back and forth in his living room. His phone's call log, which shows innumerable outgoing calls and unanswered texts to Evelyn over the previous few days, reveals his growing despair. She doesn't reply to any of his messages, which is a startling concern given her custom of responding promptly. He had visited her home twice and knocked repeatedly, but each time there had been no answer. The fact that a neighbor had casually said that he had seen her leave early in the morning did little to calm him. Seeing no other recourse, he decides to go see her at her office. He needs answers, but it seemed invasive. After a few hours, John arrives at Palmer Tech building, bubbling with a hive of activity, with staff and guests mingling in its modern lobby area. John tries to hide his anxiety as he walks up to the receptionist. He declares, "I'm here to see Evelyn Mayers." The receptionist gives him a quick look. “Do you have an ap
Except for the little hum of activity coming from down the hall, Liam's waiting room is silent. With his arms crossed over his chest, he paces close to the window. Evelyn taps lightly on the armrest while sitting with her legs crossed. Fred leans against the wall, looking at the door and then at his phone. As they all wait for Louisa, tension pervades the air. A sense of relief fills the room as Louisa eventually enters, appearing worn out but neat. She brushes a hand through her hair and greets, "Morning," with a slight smile. "Mom!" Liam rushes over to her, his anxiety obvious. "What happened? Are you alright? We've been quite anxious.” "I’m fine, Liam," Louisa reassures him while putting a hand on his shoulder. She looks up at Evelyn and Fred saying, "I apologize for worrying you all. I was so worn out after leaving the hospital yesterday that I just dozed off and didn't wake up until this morning. I swear, nothing is wrong.” Evelyn looks at her for a ti
As Louisa enters her front door, the home feels colder than usual. The slight click of her heels on the wood floor is muffled by the weight of the pain in her chest. She throws her clutch on the couch and sinks down next to it, holding her face in her shaking hands. Sharp and unrelenting, Kingsley's words replays in her head. "You were nothing short of garbage!" "Queen of Deceit." Every word cut through her poise, exposing her vulnerability and rawness. Even though she had expected him to be hostile, the poison in his charges nonetheless, managed to pierce her more deeply than she had thought. She struggles to hold back her emotions, but before she could stop them, the dam bursts. She let out a sob, then another, and before she knows it, the stress of years was leaking out of her in fits of tears. Her thoughts strays to that fateful day that everything changed, the day Martha died, five years ago. She wishes Martha is here today, by her side to comfort her, tell her
Kingsley leans forward, his fingers drumming on the glass table before him, his eyes flickering with something incomprehensible. "Miss Emerson?” He repeats, more of a statement than a question, “send her in." He drops the call, a hint of relief evident on his face. It is true he has been feeling jittery since his visit to the hospital. He knows for a fact that she is hard hearted and stubborn. So, he wasn't sure she would be shaken by his threat and come find him, just because he said so. But the major cause of his anxiety is that he doesn't want to fight her. He had been hoping like hell that he wouldn't have to. Despite her faults, he knows she must have been through a lot, caring for a child who was born sick, alone. Hardy, still standing and awaiting his order raises his eyebrows, just enough to be noticeable but remains silent. He leaves swiftly at the gesture of Kingsley, giving him time to gather himself. Moments later, Louisa Emerson enters the office, her movemen
Cordelia's mouth clenches when she takes a look at the charge card Lyon slid over the table. She knows his fee is going to be high but her jaw drops at the ridiculous numbers written on it. She draws a tiny line with her lips and throws it back across the table. Her voice is low but piercing as she hisses, "This is crazy, Ryder. I refuse to pay that. And for your other request,—" she says in a tone subtly laced with contempt, "—you can forget it."Lyon laughs quietly and reclines in his chair, seemingly taking pleasure in her annoyance. "You should understand that negotiating is an art, Cordelia. Additionally, I believe we both understand that you are not here to go empty-handed.”Cordelia glares at him while folding her arms. "Avoid putting me to the test, Ryder. Over a dozen other investigators are present in this city. But none is like me,” Lyon responds with a smooth grin that never wavers. "I possess the contacts, expertise, and dirt you require. You're here because I delive
Cordelia types away on her office system, her mind focused on the memo she is preparing, which would be needed the following day for a presentation.Given the importance of that presentation, CEO Alan had explicitly stated that she should get it done herself, rather than passing it on to junior secretaries.Alan had effortlessly switched to professional mode the following week he insulted and humiliated her. It is very characteristic of him to switch like that, like the ashole that he is, until the next time his sexual urge beckons on him for a prey. Then, he'd remember he has a little sex toy nearby who can give him the ride of his life and massage his damned dick. Her phone chimes on the table, indicating an incoming text.Irritated with the interruption, she hisses, but her face brightens up when she glances at the screen and she sees that it is a message from Ryder Lyon.“Cafe Blaire, 3pm. Come with your charm.”She mentally rolls her eyes while putting the phone away.Thankfully
Evelyn takes out her phone to dial John’s line but an incoming call buzzes through. Glancing at the screen, she realizes it is Louisa. Answering the call, she says, “Hey girl, xup? How's Liam holding up?” “Eve, there's trouble. Can you come here now?” comes Louisa's low response. Evelyn comes to with a start, “is Liam alright? What happened?” “It's not Liam, it's Kingsley. Can you come over?” Louisa continues speaking in a low, unsteady voice. “Am on my way,” Evelyn replies at once, dropping the call and hurrying into her car. Her fingers tightens around the steering wheel as she speeds toward the hospital, her mind racing with different thoughts. And here, she thought she was the only one having a bad day. Why has the day been so hectic? Louisa sounded so afraid on the phone. Her voice had been so shaky, nearly breaking under the weight of her fear. "Kingsley," she says the name quietly to herself and she feels a surge of frustration go through her. She doesn't know
“Let's settle this now Louisa,” Kingsley starts, his voice bitter and colder than she'd ever heard it. He hesitates, just outside the threshold of the hallway, facing her squarely. His intent gaze seems to bore into her soul and Louisa wonders what the hell is going on. “I'll ask you again, who is your son's father?” Louisa's palms become clammy and her breath hitch as she realizes that Kingsley still has doubts about her son's paternity. She knew the moment he found out that Liam is her son that things would become hectic, because, for a fact, the odds are actually high. Knowing he is four years old and also has his generic disease is too big for a coincidence. But she didn't expect him to be so invested in the matter despite her refusal to open up. What exactly is it with this man? Does he want to see her shriveled up and dead from anxiety? She blinks and opens her mouth to speak but no sound comes out. Her mind races for something, anything, that would suffice as an a
The germless, clean fragrance of the hospital room remains in the air as Louisa drapes a thick duvet around Liam, who sits propped up in his bed. He has just been moved from the ICU to his private room, for further monitoring before being discharged finally. His cheeky grin belays the ordeal he's been through. Louisa can't help but return his smile although her tired eyes betray the exhaustion of sleepless nights. Her son is finally awake, stable and being his usual mischievous self again. It is a relief she isn't sure she deserves but she clings to it regardless. “You're doing too much again, mommy,” Liam swoons, his eyes twinkling. “I'm not a baby doll.” Louisa gives a low chuckle, genuinely amused by her son's folly. She brushes a strand of hair off his face. “ironic, coming from a four year old,” She teases him. “Come on, I'm just trying to make sure you're comfortable. Let me mother you a bit before resuming office.” “Don't jest mom,” Liam says, reaching for his favo
