" Clearly I'm not herald. We were supposed to meet this evening not now, but I had to shift the appointment. Sorry if I caused any inconveniences." I said to him.
" Its alright ma'am... How may I help you though?" Harald adjusted his glasses.
" Has my stepsister Diane come here ever since. ... Ever since I was arrested?"
" Err.. well, not she hasn't... I was surprised when i saw you calling my phone, I haven't heard from neither of you in a really long time."
" Okay... That's good... Actually I was arrested, been stuck in prison for a little while now... I just got out yesterday. I wanted to talk to you about my father's fortune."
" Mmm... I guessed that was why you called. I got a copy of the will... But then Miss, your father had some stipulations." Harold said"
"What stipulations Harold? After all, I am the eldest daughter."
" It has nothing to do with that, unfortunately." Harold said wearing a worried look on his face.
"Okay? ... So what re the stipulations?"" He said either of you can have his assets --"
" What?! Either of us? That's impossible." I yelled furiously. " Let me have a look at the will, my father wouldn't never say anything like that. I'm the eldest daughter and I've always been his favourite."
" Ms. Vera, you didn't let me finish."
" What else does it say?" I asked with my furrowed brows,
" Ma'am, he said either of you can have his fortune, only if you're married... Only then can you have it. And the marriage years has to be a minimum of 2 years with a child."
At the sound of his words, my jaw dropped in utter shock. I tried to speak but no words could form, "Two years?! With a child?!" I yelled, disdained.
" Yes ma'am. Whoever's is able to attain that first, gets your father's fortune. You will need to show evidence of a wedding certificate and the birth certificate of your child before we can start making preparations to hand everything over to you." Harold said with a straight face.
" You must be joking Harold." I breathed as I brushed my hand through my hair and face in confusion.
"Ma'am, I'm not joking... in fact your father made things this way because he wanted to make sure theres a lineage continuum. He wanted the most responsible one to have the luxury of enjoying what he left on earth." Harold explained.
I inhaled and exhaled deeply and rubbed my hands against my temples gently in order to calm myself down, " Harold," I paused. " Harold, I'm not married. Neither of I have a child! So how do I make all this happen? With so little time?!"
"I'm so sorry, Ms Vera but there's no way I can help you especially since you're not even married at least." Harold started packing his laptop back into his bag, as he spoke.
"Harold, you have to help me! What if ... What if Diane beats me to it?"
" Then so be it, ma'am. She also has rights to tour Father's fortune... Look Ms Vera, the only way I can help you, is if you can find a husband at least... That way I could consider, but without that, there's no way I can help you."
" Shit!" I cursed quietly under my breathe.
" But if I may ask, when last did you speak with your sister? I'm aware you two Haven had the best relationship as sisters in a really long time." Harold started.
Her name alone irked me. After my mother's death, my father got impregnated Diane's mother and that was how she bore her for him and automatically she became my sister and now she has access to what truly belongs to me and me alone. While growing up, Diane's mother wasn't the nicest at all.
She always tried to make me look bad in my father's presence just so her child Diane would have first place access to his heart. Majority of the time, Diane would make a mess and would blame it on me in a fit to poison my father's mind against me.
This only caused a crack in our relationship. Whereas, Harold and my father were very close friends and business partners. Harold had been working for my father for as long as I remember and even before I was born. One thing was sure and it was that my father trusted Harold with his life.
Harold always used to come over to the house. A few times, he did experience how badly Diane's mother treated me. When everyone else ignored me, he supported me. I guess he asked about my relationship with my sister now because he knows how rough it used to be in the past.
"So, I don't remember the last time I saw her and even spoke to her." I said resting my head weight on my hand.
"I see." He cleared his throat.
"I just got out of orison, Harold, I have nothing, I don't even know where to start from my life's a mess... I would have really appreciated it if you helped me... Somehow, in anyway."
" Hmm... Miss Vera, my hands are tied... Although I do think there's a way I can help you " he rubbed his chin.
" How? Please?"
" Ma'am, this would mean I would be going against your father's will, but let it be as a form of payment for the way you were treated badly in the past. How about you find yourself a husband... Then I'll help you with the rest"
Hearing the ultimatum made my mind wonder back to Mr. Raymond Anderson. He did want me to be his wife, but all I've done is embarrass and reject him. What is wrong with me? At this point I have no other option than to shamelessly go back to him.
"Diane could pop up any minute now, and if she beats you to it, I'll have no other option that to let her have it all." Harold reminded me.
I let out a deep sigh, " Make sure to let me know if she steps foot in here Raymond."
" Yes ma'am." He responded. I got up, leave the cupcakes he served me untouched. Now I wasn't sure Raymond would give me another chance especially since he's my last hope now.
