Ruby’s POV

It felt like I was floating. Or maybe I was being dragged, I was not sure.

My body felt weightless, but something pressed against my ribs, jolting me with every step. My head lolled and it felt heavy and useless. My limbs wouldn’t move no matter how hard I tried.

A low and calm voice murmured something close to my ear. “You’re going to be fine, Ruby. The ambulance is almost here.”

Then I heard sirens. Loud, piercing, disturbing. They cleared through the fog in my head. My stomach lurched as I was lifted, carried and placed onto something firm. Cold air rushed past my face.

Then I saw a blinding light. My eyes fluttered, but everything blurred together. I saw faces, felt movement, heard the soft hum of voices. Someone was talking. I tried to focus, but the words drifted away. Then, I saw and felt and heard nothing again.

It was all silence.

When I blinked awake again, the world was still and quiet. There were no more sirens and no more voices. But I was no longer in Gabriel'

Ruby’s POVThe man claiming to be my brother walked closer. I stayed still as I warily watched him approach me. I didn't know how to feel.Ariana leaned toward Lilac, but her whisper was loud enough for all of us to hear. “Oh my God, Jonas really wasn’t lying. Look at them. They’re the spitting image of each other.”I didn’t react. I just watched him.Damien turned to Ariana. “You can call me Damien,” he said. “Jonas is my middle name. I had to tell you it was my first name to hide my true identity. I didn’t want anyone outside of Ruby and Dominic knowing I was in the U.S.”Ariana frowned. “Why so secretive?”Damien frowned and looked away. “Apparently, my father still has enemies here. If they knew I existed, they’d kill me.”Ariana blinked. “Kill you?”He nodded. “Because they'd think I am a beneficiary of the DanCliffe estate.”Silence settled over the room. Then Damien turned back to Ariana and smiled. “But I have to thank you.”She tilted her head. “For what?”“For leading me to

Ruby’s POVDamien never left my side. For the rest of my stay in the hospital, he was always there telling the worst jokes to make me laugh, forcing me to eat when I didn’t want to, keeping me company through the long, dull hours. I had spent so many years thinking I had no family and now here he was, slipping into my life like he had always been there. The ten-year gap between us didn’t even matter. He was so easy to talk to and so warm. If he had been part of my childhood, I knew it would have been brighter and happier.Three days after I was admitted, the same blond nurse walked in, holding a clipboard. “Good news,” she said with a smile. “It’s time for you to be discharged.”Finally.She placed the discharge papers in my hands, along with a pen. “Just sign these, and you’re free to go.”I didn’t hesitate. I scrawled my name quickly, then turned to Damien. “I don’t want to go back to my big, empty condo alone.”He smiled like he had been expecting me to say that. “Then you won’t,”

Ruby’s POVDominic stood there, a bouquet of red roses in one hand and a box of Swiss chocolates in the other. His expression was hesitant, like he wasn’t sure if he was welcome. He definitely wasn't.“I brought your favorite,” he said quietly. “Swiss chocolate. And red roses to match your hair.”His eyes flicked upward to my head and his face shifted. “Or.... what used to be your hair.”I didn’t respond. I just stared at him and tried to recognize what I was currently feeling. I wanted to be angry; hell, I was angry, but I couldn’t ignore the warmth I felt at seeing him again.Has it really been almost a week since I saw him last?Dominic looked awful. He’d lost weight. His shirt hung looser than before, and his face was sharper, the lines more pronounced. The familiar scar on his face was whiter than the rest of his face. Only his ponytail remained pristine, as if it was the one thing he still had control over. It was hard to look at this man who instilled fear in everybody in the

Ruby’s POV"Ruby, please!" Dominic got up as I stood from my kitchen stool. He made a move towards me, but Damien's hand shot out, stopping him."Stay away from my sister!" He growled.I turned and walked out of the kitchen, not bothering to stop and see if they were following me. I crossed the living room, towards my bedroom and closed the door behind me.I pressed my back against the cold wood. My chest felt like it was being weighed down with a hundred large stones. I willed myself to stay calm, but my hands were already shaking.Through the door, I listened to Dominic as he ordered his daughter. "Ariel, go to the car.”“I don’t want to,” Ariel retired.A pause. Then Dominic’s voice became hard. “Now.”I pictured Ariel’s expression with her jaw set, her eyes blazing. She hated being ordered around. But there was a beat of silence, and then the sound of movement. The front door opened and closed.Dominic and his daughter were gone.A breath shuddered out of me. I squeezed my eyes sh

Ambrose's POVI sat on the edge of the hotel bed, watching as the nurse wiped the blood from my arm. The sting barely registered. I’d been shot before. Pain meant nothing. Pain was temporary, but winning was permanent. What did matter was what I’d seen that day in the trailer. The bastard who stormed in to save Ruby was Damien, Thorne’s firstborn son. Eleven years had passed, but I recognized him the second I saw his face.My fingers curled into a fist as the nurse dabbed iodine onto the wound. Thorne’s wife and son were supposed to be gone. When Thorne divorced Eleanor, I’d counted on them disappearing for good. I had even hoped they were dead. And yet here Damien was, standing once again between me and what I wanted. The key was still missing. If Ruby had lied about Gabriel having it, then I was running out of time.Ruby alone, I could break. She thought she was strong, but I knew better. I’d built her for eleven years, twisted her into something useful, and when I was done with her

Dominic's POVI sat in my car, staring at the dashboard with my hands resting loosely on the wheel. The street outside was quiet. No movement, just the dull hum of the city in the distance. My men had called earlier to tell me that Ambrose and Gabriel were in custody. Now I was parked in front of the Basement.I breathed in and out slowly, gripping the steering wheel tighter. My thoughts drifted unwillingly to Ruby. Her eyes had been cold the last time I saw her after she was discharged. The way she had looked at me, the way she had kept her distance, as if she didn’t know me at all. It hurt me so much.Trust was what she valued most, I understood that now. She wanted a life without secrets. I should have known that about her from the very start. Her father had been a man of secrets, a man who kept the truth buried under lies. She hated that. She wanted honesty. And yet, I had hurt her the same way her father hurt her.I groaned, resisting the urge to slam my fist into the dashboard.

  • The Billionaire's Daring Kitten    Taking Control

Ruby's POVI parked in front of Hawthorne & Adler and turned off the engine. My fingers curled around the steering wheel and took a moment to think. The past few days had been a blur, from finding the tungsten steel closet to giving my statement at the police station and now, preparing for this moment. Today, I was taking back what was mine, and for good too.My phone buzzed in the passenger seat. I glanced at it to see a FaceTime call from Damien. I picked up and saw him standing shirtless, a toothbrush in his mouth."Big day," he started. "Are you ready?"I glanced at the firm’s glass doors. "As I'll ever be, I guess."“Okay, you’re going to walk in there, sign those papers and end this battle once and for all.” There was no single doubt in his voice; he believed in me that much."Let’s hope it’s that simple." I replied and gave him a tentative smile. "Who knows what kind of twisted legal protection Ambrose made over our father's estate? I might never be able to regain it.""Don't s

Ruby’s POVI turned to Damien, and the moment his arms gathered me to himself, I broke down. A sob tore out of me before I could stop it. I pressed my face into his shoulder, gripping his jacket like it was the only thing keeping me from falling apart. It wasn’t just about the will or the album or the house that now felt like a graveyard. It was everything from Gabriel’s threats to Ambrose’s schemes. The months of watching my back, waiting for the next attack. Dominic pushing me away, then pulling me back in. My father’s secrets unloosening like a rope that had been around my throat for eleven years. I was exhausted. My father should have lived longer. If not for Ambrose and his wickedness, my father would still be alive.Damien rubbed my back, murmuring. “It's all good, Ruby. Everything is safe now.Safe.... I almost laughed at the word. "I had a meeting with Dad’s lawyer.""You did WHAT?""I went to see Mr. Hawthorne," I repeated, keeping my tone even."You left Chicago alone?" Damien sounded pissed now. "Ruby, you just got out of the hospital, maybe ten days ago. And now you're driving halfway across the state to see a lawyer. What the hell are you thinking?""I’m thinking I’m fine," I said, rolling my eyes. "And I don’t need you acting like my babysitter.""You don’t need more stress right now!" He insisted."Then stop stressing me out," I shot back.Damien groaned heavily. "I always heard about younger sisters doing irrational things. I just never thought it would apply to you."I snorted. • The Billionaire's Daring Kitten    Finally Getting What's Hers

Ruby’s POVThe next day after my meeting with Dominic, I took a drive from Chicago to Springfield. My mind was so occupied with thoughts of my father, the key and whatever secrets Hawthorne & Adler Law Firm might be holding. I couldn't stay still any longer.Damien had offered to come along. He even insisted, but I told him no. This was something I needed to do myself. I didn’t know what I was expecting to find, but whatever it was, I wanted to face it alone.Three hours and several GPS directions later, my car sat in front of their office building. The building was a tall, glass-paneled structure that looked expensive, the kind of place where powerful men in suits made million-dollar deals over coffee.I took a deep breath, adjusting the baseball cap on my head. I wore a black leather jacket, black pants and baseball hat pulled low, everything was an attempt to keep a low profile. My father had been a hotshot in the business world. Even years after his death, people still remembered

Ruby's POVThe condo still didn’t feel like mine. Three days of rearranging furniture, shopping for new décor and repainting a few walls, yet something was still off. Maybe it was because I had been gone for too long, or maybe because I myself had changed.I sat on the couch, my laptop perched on my lap as I tried to focus on an online business class. The words on the screen blurred together. My mind drifted, not to Gabriel or Ambrose this time but to Dominic. His blue eyes and his calm voice. The way he looked at me before I walked away. The doorbell rang suddenly. I glanced up, shutting the laptop. Setting it aside, I padded to the door. When I opened it, no one was there, just a small box resting on the threshold. My pulse kicked up as I remembered how a similar package had been sitting at my doorstep four months ago, from Gabriel. I calmed myself down by reminding myself that this box was much smaller, way too small for a booby trap.I bent down, picked it up and stepped back insi
