Ruby's POV

Dominic's men grabbed her arms and forced her to her knees in front of us, earning a startled yelp from her. She wasn't bruised or bloody, but she looked like someone who had not slept in days. Her dress was wrinkled and dirty and her hair was a tangled mess.

Dominic crouched and lifted her chin with two fingers. "You have no idea how much I want to kill you right now." He muttered.

Surprisingly, she did not flinch. Instead, a slow, eerie smile crept across her face. "There's nothing you could do to me that Gabriel hasn't done ten times over," she whispered. "I'm not afraid to die."

I folded my arms. "Then why did you do it?" I asked. "Why did you pretend to be someone else just to get close to me? Why did you lie to me, to us?"

She sighed and closed her eyes for a moment, like she was pulling the words from deep inside.

"Because Gabriel made me," she admitted. "I never ever wanted to hurt you, Ruby. I just needed the key. That was all. I needed the key and the wealth that

Dominic's POVRuby wasn't speaking. She sat beside me in the car, sitting so still that she looked and felt like a stone statue. Her face was turned toward the window. This stuff silence was unlike her. Usually, she filled car rides with stories or offhand remarks, but now she just watched the streets pass by. The breeze lifted strands of her red hair, catching the light from the street lamps."Penny for your thoughts?" I asked. She blinked and turned her head slightly. "Oh, nothing much. I was just thinking about what happened back there. I was wondering if I made the right choice."I patted her thigh. "Whatever choice you made, I’m with you. One hundred percent."She exhaled and nodded. "Yeah, thanks."But the distance was still there. It sat between us like a third passenger. She was still thinking about many things, and I was not sure what to do to help ease it.So I tried to shake her out of it. "How about dinner? I know a good Italian food place downtown. They make really great

Ruby’s POV"You guys look far from ready!"I peered into my phone, where I was having a FaceTime with Ariana and Lilac. It was the night of the fundraising dinner.Ariana was in her room, fluffing her curls in front of her mirror. She has a black skincare mask on. Lilac was lying on the floor in her pajamas."Oh, we'll be ready soon." Lilac replied and rolled her eyes. "Not everybody takes two and a half hours to get ready like you do, Ruby.""And I'm the better for it." I snorted. "You guys had better not waste my time."“Ruby, you’re a lifesaver,” Ariana said, twisting a strand of hair around her finger. “Seriously. Without you, I’d never get in.”Lilac sat up and then stood to her feet with a groan. “Then you’d never see your dream guy again.”Ariana sighed and threw her head back. “Can you not lay into me like a kid?”I chuckled. “Wail all you want, but Lilac is right. If you don’t at least get his name tonight, we’re going to join hands and beat you up.”Ariana gasped and clutche

Ruby’s POVLilac, Ariana and I split. I could hear the conversation of different people as I walked past them, the clinking of glasses and the hum of a jazz band playing in the background. None of it mattered. All I could think about was what was coming next. I slipped into an empty table near the corner of the room, took out my phone and texted Estelle. ME: I’m here. Left corner, near the bar.ESTELLE: On my way.I exhaled sharply and leaned back. My fingers drummed against the table as I looked around for any sign of red hair. I grabbed a flute of champagne from a passing waiter and threw it back in one go. The burn did nothing to calm me. Then I saw her. Estelle approached my table wearing a white dress, her red hair pulled into a ballroom bun. She looked really elegant. I stood up and reached out for a handshake. She arched a brow, then pulled me into a hug instead. As she hugged me, she whispered into my ear. “Don’t ever try that with me again.” I let out a breathy

Gabriel’s POV"Well, that was a waste of a night."I took a drag from my cigarette and blew a puff. Smoke curled toward the ceiling. That was the only thing in this room that moved without fear. The taste of nicotine was no longer calming my nerves. Six of my men stood in front of me, beaten, battered and broken. One had a black eye that was so swollen he could barely see. Another one cradled his wrist, bent at an ugly angle. A third one was pressing an ice pack to a jaw that was so swollen he couldn't talk. The other men were no better. Julia had fed them lies and walked them straight into a beating. I took another drag and exhaled slowly. My chest burned, but not from the smoke. I was angry. I was so angry that I knew I would not be able to control her if I saw her. I should have known better than to trust Julia. She came home from work a few nights ago, all breathless and eager, and told me everything. She told me how Ruby had the key, how she and Dominic were going to some

Ruby’s POVThe car ride was too quiet. Ariel sat beside me, but she wasn't saying anything, which was unlike her. Her arms were crossed and her lips were pressed together. The streetlights outside flashed over her face, and I saw the worry on it.“Are you okay?” I asked. She shrugged. “I guess.”I waited, but she stayed silent. That wasn’t like her. “What’s on your mind?”She exhaled sharply and stared at the roof of the car. “What’s happening? Why did we have to leave the dinner so fast?”I gave her a small smile. “Nothing you need to worry about, Ruby. Your father just didn't want us to stay too long at that place.”"Oh, give me a break!" Her eyes rolled. “I am not a child, Ruby. I know my dad is always dealing with dangerous people. It's in his line of work.”I shifted in my seat. "Well...."“That’s why my mom died." She continued. “Because of the kind of people he worked with. They wanted to get at my dad, so they killed my mum."I hesitated. She looked at me like she already knew

"Dizziness from the injury."Her brows pulled together like she didn’t believe me. Before she could say anything, footsteps sounded from the hall. We both turned.Ariel stood in the doorway with her arms crossed. She lifted a hand and waved it lazily. "Oh, don’t stop on my account."Ruby let out a breath and ran a hand through her hair. I turned back to my daughter. "What are you doing awake by this hour?"Being disorganized, I didn't realize she left before. She leaned against the doorframe. "Your lousy car woke me up.""It's lousy because six men were tearing It apart." I frowned. "And you never wake up for that."She shrugged. "I had a restless sleep anyway."I studied her. He lifted a forkful of scrambled eggs and grinned."I figured the smell would wake you up," he said. "Thought it’d be a nice way to start your day."I groaned and smacked his arm. "You are a villain in my life!"He chuckled and waved another fork heaped with some bacon close to my mouth. "You want some?"I rolled my eyes and sat up. "I don't like you, Mr Rutherford."Dominic smirked and bit off the bacon. "Are you coming to work today? His voice was full of worry."I just drove three hours to Springfield," I replied him, shifting the car into drive. "I had a meeting with Dad’s lawyer.""You did WHAT?""I went to see Mr. Hawthorne," I repeated, keeping my tone even."You left Chicago alone?" Damien sounded pissed now. "Ruby, you just got out of the hospital, maybe ten days ago. And now you're driving halfway across the state to see a lawyer. What the hell are you thinking?""I’m thinking I’m fine," I said, rolling my eyes. "And I don’t need you acting like my babysitter.""You don’t need more stress right now!" He insisted."Then stop stressing me out," I shot back.Damien groaned heavily. "I always heard about younger sisters doing irrational things. I just never thought it would apply to you."I snorted. • The Billionaire's Daring Kitten    Finally Getting What's Hers

Ruby’s POVThe next day after my meeting with Dominic, I took a drive from Chicago to Springfield. My mind was so occupied with thoughts of my father, the key and whatever secrets Hawthorne & Adler Law Firm might be holding. I couldn't stay still any longer.Damien had offered to come along. He even insisted, but I told him no. This was something I needed to do myself. I didn’t know what I was expecting to find, but whatever it was, I wanted to face it alone.Three hours and several GPS directions later, my car sat in front of their office building. The building was a tall, glass-paneled structure that looked expensive, the kind of place where powerful men in suits made million-dollar deals over coffee.I took a deep breath, adjusting the baseball cap on my head. I wore a black leather jacket, black pants and baseball hat pulled low, everything was an attempt to keep a low profile. My father had been a hotshot in the business world. Even years after his death, people still remembered

  • The Billionaire's Daring Kitten    Needing Time

Ruby's POVThe condo still didn’t feel like mine. Three days of rearranging furniture, shopping for new décor and repainting a few walls, yet something was still off. Maybe it was because I had been gone for too long, or maybe because I myself had changed.I sat on the couch, my laptop perched on my lap as I tried to focus on an online business class. The words on the screen blurred together. My mind drifted, not to Gabriel or Ambrose this time but to Dominic. His blue eyes and his calm voice. The way he looked at me before I walked away. The doorbell rang suddenly. I glanced up, shutting the laptop. Setting it aside, I padded to the door. When I opened it, no one was there, just a small box resting on the threshold. My pulse kicked up as I remembered how a similar package had been sitting at my doorstep four months ago, from Gabriel. I calmed myself down by reminding myself that this box was much smaller, way too small for a booby trap.I bent down, picked it up and stepped back insi

  • The Billionaire's Daring Kitten    Brother-Sister's Ride Home Talk

Ruby's POVDamien's car hummed softly as he drove us away from The Basement. I didn’t say a word during the drive. I just stared out of the window, watching the city lights blur past. The wind from the moving car slipped through the crack in the window. It stirred my hair, blowing loose strands across my face. I didn’t bother pushing them away.My mind was still back there with Ambrose and Gabriel, kneeling in the dirt like the pathetic men they were. Gabriel had begged. Of course, he had. Always thinking about himself first. Not once did he even beg for Ambrose, just himself. He was greedy like that. He’d grabbed my jeans, pleaded for mercy, as if that erased everything he had done. As if I could forget Julia’s lifeless body floating in the river. As if I could forget the way he looked at me when he thought he had won, or the triumphant look in his eyes as he stalked me all over Chicago.I had wanted him dead. For a moment, I had wanted to rip him apart with my bare hands. But I wasn

Dominic's POVI slipped my hands into my pockets, watching the two bastards kneeling before me. Gabriel’s mouth was bloody but he still had enough energy to glare at me like he wanted to rip my throat out. Ambrose on the other hand just looked annoyed, like this whole thing was beneath him as a person.I stared at them in silence before I finally spoke. “Why’d you do it, Ambrose?” My voice was calm, but I was far from it. “Why send someone to kill me? Why take Rachael away?”Ambrose chuckled, shaking his head like I was the one being ridiculous. “Because I got her first,” he said. “We were together long before you came along. We grew up together. We were supposed to be together. And then you waltzed in and took her from me.”I snorted, shaking my head. “You never loved her.”He glared at me. "And you cannot prove that.”“You only wanted her because of her family.” I tilted my head. “Rachael was the governor’s daughter. The golden ticket.”Ambrose’s expression didn’t change, but I knew

  • The Billionaire's Daring Kitten    Time To Right Every Wrong

Dominic's POVI sat in my car, staring at the dashboard with my hands resting loosely on the wheel. The street outside was quiet. No movement, just the dull hum of the city in the distance. My men had called earlier to tell me that Ambrose and Gabriel were in custody. Now I was parked in front of the Basement.I breathed in and out slowly, gripping the steering wheel tighter. My thoughts drifted unwillingly to Ruby. Her eyes had been cold the last time I saw her after she was discharged. The way she had looked at me, the way she had kept her distance, as if she didn’t know me at all. It hurt me so much.Trust was what she valued most, I understood that now. She wanted a life without secrets. I should have known that about her from the very start. Her father had been a man of secrets, a man who kept the truth buried under lies. She hated that. She wanted honesty. And yet, I had hurt her the same way her father hurt her.I groaned, resisting the urge to slam my fist into the dashboard.

  • The Billionaire's Daring Kitten    Fished Out

Ambrose's POVI sat on the edge of the hotel bed, watching as the nurse wiped the blood from my arm. The sting barely registered. I’d been shot before. Pain meant nothing. Pain was temporary, but winning was permanent. What did matter was what I’d seen that day in the trailer. The bastard who stormed in to save Ruby was Damien, Thorne’s firstborn son. Eleven years had passed, but I recognized him the second I saw his face.My fingers curled into a fist as the nurse dabbed iodine onto the wound. Thorne’s wife and son were supposed to be gone. When Thorne divorced Eleanor, I’d counted on them disappearing for good. I had even hoped they were dead. And yet here Damien was, standing once again between me and what I wanted. The key was still missing. If Ruby had lied about Gabriel having it, then I was running out of time.Ruby alone, I could break. She thought she was strong, but I knew better. I’d built her for eleven years, twisted her into something useful, and when I was done with her

Ruby’s POV"Ruby, please!" Dominic got up as I stood from my kitchen stool. He made a move towards me, but Damien's hand shot out, stopping him."Stay away from my sister!" He growled.I turned and walked out of the kitchen, not bothering to stop and see if they were following me. I crossed the living room, towards my bedroom and closed the door behind me.I pressed my back against the cold wood. My chest felt like it was being weighed down with a hundred large stones. I willed myself to stay calm, but my hands were already shaking.Through the door, I listened to Dominic as he ordered his daughter. "Ariel, go to the car.”“I don’t want to,” Ariel retired.A pause. Then Dominic’s voice became hard. “Now.”I pictured Ariel’s expression with her jaw set, her eyes blazing. She hated being ordered around. But there was a beat of silence, and then the sound of movement. The front door opened and closed.Dominic and his daughter were gone.A breath shuddered out of me. I squeezed my eyes sh

And red roses to match your hair.”His eyes flicked upward to my head and his face shifted. “Or.... what used to be your hair.”I didn’t respond. I just stared at him and tried to recognize what I was currently feeling. I wanted to be angry; hell, I was angry, but I couldn’t ignore the warmth I felt at seeing him again.Has it really been almost a week since I saw him last?Dominic looked awful. He’d lost weight. His shirt hung looser than before, and his face was sharper, the lines more pronounced. The familiar scar on his face was whiter than the rest of his face. Only his ponytail remained pristine, as if it was the one thing he still had control over. It was hard to look at this man who instilled fear in everybody in the
