Sebastian checked his watch as he waited impatiently for Ava to arrive. He had managed to convince her to have lunch with him despite her obvious lack of interest at first.

But he figured she eventually caved in given the fact that they had a lot of things to talk about and staying apart for longer than required might come back to haunt them given that they were currently in the public’s eye after the clubbing incident that still made the headlines now and then.

He took a sip from the glass of water and right on cue, Ava stepped into the restaurant. She looked frazzled and angry. He was hoping he wasn’t going to be the recipient of her backlash but everything including the timing indicated otherwise.

He signaled her over and she made her way towards the table as soon as she got sight of him.

“Thank you for coming.” Sebastian began as she settled down into her seat before he could help pull out the chair for her.

He understood her hurt, last night hadn’t gone as she had hoped it w

Ava assessed her options. She wanted to completely believe all he had said but a small part of her still held doubts about him. If she did this, we would be walking into this blindfolded and not knowing what would happen next month or the month after that. If there was anything she believed in, it was that his feelings for her were real. She didn’t doubt any of it for one second but she wanted more, she wanted him to be hers completely without the interference of Natasha or any other woman from his past life.If she wanted this to work, she had to give him the benefit of the doubt at the very least.“Okay,” Ava whispered. “I’ll come back home and give you the time you need to decide what you want to do about us because I’m tired of living on the edge when it comes to you.”Sebastian heaved a huge sigh of relief. The worst was behind them now, she was going to come back home, and the sensations he felt as soon as he heard the acceptance in her voice were indescribable. “I was worrie

It’s been two weeks since Ava returned to the penthouse and she couldn’t have been any more confused than she already was. The first few days of her return were some of the days she had ever spent with Sebastian. The excitement was alluring and she was happier than she had ever been in a long time. Sebastian had decided they both needed a vacation to make up for lost time and she had all been too eager to go on one. Sebastian had managed to pull some strings and she was given a week’s worth of vacation from work much to her delight as they flew over to Santorini for the first part of their journey. They had a routine on how to spend their mornings and after a good night’s sleep, they would lie on the recliners on the side of the house that overlooked the lake below them, while their entourage of servants would serve them breakfast on the private balcony. It was luxurious and comfortable, Ava basked in the attention she was showered with and she wouldn’t mind retiring here when her

Sebastian slammed his fist into the desk in front of him as he glared at Natasha. He’s had a rough week by any stretch of the imagination and he wasn’t ready to deal with any more added problems to the ones he was already battling with. He couldn’t believe that he hadn’t changed the locks to his office ever since he broke up with Natasha. He had moved on but at the same time, it seemed like he hadn’t because she could still get through to him so easily like she always had in the past. He could finally realize Ava’s hurt, Natasha was always going to be a presence in their lives if he didn’t take care of her properly, and from the looks of things, if this talk broke down, there was only one option left to take. “What the hell are you doing here?” Sebastian glared at her.“We have to talk.” Natasha began a small frown on her face. She had never seen him lose his temper before but she was seeing it now, Sebastian had changed a lot from the man she once knew and she was undecided about

Ava checked the clock on the wall as she sat impatiently on the couch, waiting for Sebastian to return home. It was nearly midnight and she hadn’t heard from him all day, his phone was unreachable as well. She had tried calling Damian, they were always everywhere together but she had been led straight to voicemail when she called him. Calling his office was out of the equation as well, there was only so much humiliation she could suffer in a day. So she had decided to stay up and wait for him to return, she had to speak with him before she lost her mind and she was on the verge of doing so. She sipped the wine from her glass cup as the content swirled around it. She was a little bit tipsy having consumed over half of the bottle of red wine on the counter but she couldn’t bring herself to retire to bed. She heard the front door ping open, Sebastian was back. She quickly downed the remaining content of her glass cup and smoothened her hair while waiting for him to make his way into

The next morning, Ava woke up to a space next to her. She figured that Sebastian had failed to keep to his words from last night, not willing to let the hurt she felt eat her deeply, she threw off the covers of her bed and made her way downstairs for a cup of coffee. As soon got downstairs, she heard the coffee machine brewing much to her surprise. She hurriedly made her way into the kitchen where she saw Sebastian sitting on the dining table with a cup of coffee in his hands while he scrolled through his phone on the other. “Good morning,” Sebastian said without looking at her. He decided against leaving for work without seeing her like he had promised last night. “Good morning, I thought you left,” Ava replied as she made her way towards the table to pour herself a cup of coffee.“I promised you I would stay, didn’t I?” “I know but given how terrible we’ve been over the past week and a half, I was prepared for anything.” “We’ll talk about this but not right now,” Sebastian drop

Ava hated crying. She hated feeling weak, just as much as she hated crying too but that’s all she’s done for the past week. Needless to say, she had let herself be fooled by Sebastian’s promise of changing and coming back to his old self after the dinner party but it had all been a lie. The only reason he had attempted to pacify her was simply because he wanted her around to the next few functions he would be attending. That was she was to him now, a muse to garner public attention for the Bancroft empire. His routine of coming back late at night and leaving before she woke up had remained constant.Unwilling to come back to an empty house, Ava resorted to frequently having drinks with a few friends from the office after work. “Earth to Ava,” Maggie snapped her fingers in front of her face, interrupting her train of thought. “Hey,” Ava forces a smile on her face as she blinked twice in a bid to regain her semblance. “Sorry, I zoned out for a minute.” “It was more than a minute,” E

Sebastian was taking his company to greater heights and at the same time, her career was finally taking off after her months of hard work. She was supposed to be pleased that the bargain they had both made in the first place was proving to be fruitful but Ava wasn’t, she wanted more out of this. Sebastian had given her the promises of wanting more out of this as well but he had played her for a fool. He used her like she wasn’t any different from Natasha or the other women he’d been with. Natasha had tried to warn her about Sebastian but she paid her no heed and now, she understood why Natasha had found it so difficult to stay away. It hurt being lied to, especially coming from someone that had promised to give you the world.Ava sighed, tossing the letter back on the counter as she poured herself a cup of coffee and made her way back to the room. She had a lot to keep her mind preoccupied with, her first photo shoot was in an hour and after that, she had a couple of meetings to atte

As soon as Sebastian saw Kim storming towards him, he knew that he was in trouble. Kim was a woman with a fiery temper and if he didn’t douse the situation, he knew she would rain hell down on everyone here before she would be stopped. He was trying to listen to the investors and at the same time, he was preparing himself for Kim’a arrival. He had to take her out of here before she went off on him.“Excuse me,” Sebastian said before leaving the meeting and making his way toward Kim before he could open her mouth. “Come on,” He grabbed her by the arm and dragged her towards the balcony, away from the prying eyes of the crowd and paparazzi. “Let go of me!” Kim yelled as soon as they got to the balcony. “What the hell is wrong with you?” Sebastian yelled at her. “I can’t afford to mess up today and you were about to cost me one of my most lucrative contracts yet.”“Is that why you’ve been treating my sister like a piece of trash?” Kim yelled back, he was going to make her cower this t

One month laterThe wedding had been a splendid affair and from the start, Ava was practically forbidden from lifting a finger for herself by Kim, Renee, Violet, and the flock of servants at her disposal due to how heavy she had become and she resorted to staying put unless she risked the ire of the women helping her dress up. Sebastian had planned a proposal with the rest of their friends leaving her in the dark. It was unexpected and it felt real and different this time around, they had come through so many difficulties and they both knew it was the right time to make it all real this time around. At the stroke of midnight on her wedding, Ava was standing at the entrance of the hall already adorned with palatial decorations with cascading floral arrangements hanging from every side of the grand room, sparkling white chandeliers hung high above with delicate draperies completing the settings designed to evoke an atmosphere filled with love and warmth. A group of violinists was posit

It’s been two months since Sebastian was released from the hospital and Ava moved into the mansion with him. The penthouse held too many hurtful memories and she wasn’t eager to go back there and be plagued by nightmares during her sleep. Jake’s trial hadn’t taken a lot of time either, there was a ton of insurmountable evidence against him and the jury didn’t take much liking to him either, or the judge. In reality, no one was going to take the side of a journalist with murderous intentions over New York’s most desirable couple. Their return to the spotlight had been a field day in the media world especially as articles and gossip about their breakup had been going on for a while now, their appearance together had all but quietened every rumor going on about them. Ava was becoming used to being pregnant and after a few weeks of tedious work down at the agency, she had gone on maternity leave that would run well into a few months after she gave birth. One of her favorite parts of be

Damian looked back and forth between Ava and Sebastian and it was pretty obvious that they had eyes for just each other right now, everything else faded into the background. He didn’t need any further clue, his time here was up.“I believe it’s best I give you both some space to talk things through.” Damian cleared his throat, gave Sebastian a nod, and patted Ava’s shoulders as he walked past her. “Do you think they’re going to be fine?” Violet asked Damian as soon as he got to the door. Sebastian spared them a glance over his shoulder before returning his gaze to Violet. “I can’t possibly say for sure but if what I noticed between them was true then we’ve got nothing to worry about. As soon as Ava heard the door shut behind her, she walked towards the bed, maintaining a friendly distance as she pulled out a chair and sat on it. Sebastian didn’t know how to start tackling their issues so he decided to make small talk first, it always worked for him and he was hoping that it wouldn

Ava made her way outside the building and towards the parking lot, it was lonely, just how she wanted it to be. She didn’t want any disturbance or interference from anyone. All Ava had wanted was for Sebastian to wake up from his coma. She spent days at his bedside, urging him to come back to her and he eventually did but she ran. There was no telling why she ran and she didn’t even have any logical explanation as to why she did it, the only thing she could say is that she was scared shitless and that was all she could say. She would eventually have to go back and talk to him afterward but she didn’t know if she could bring herself to do it. “Hey, sis.” Ava looked up to see Kim walking towards her flanked on either side by Renee and Violet, they all wore worried expressions on their faces and she could tell from their hesitation that they didn’t know if they should come any closer or maintain a healthy distance. “How did you guys find me?” Ava asked, her eyes were fixed to the g

“I’m only trying to look out for you,” Kim sighed. “I’m tired of seeing you crying after a couple of months where you think you’re in love and your troubles are behind you. It hurts me as much as it hurts you, Ava.” “I know,” Ava smiled sadly. Kim was right, she’d always been eager to jump right back into it without putting provisions in place in case her assumed fairytale moment didn’t come to pass. But things were different this time around, she had been through a lot and as a result, she’d been forced to put herself first for now before anyone else and if anything was going to happen, she would be the last person to instigate anything. She’d done enough and it wasn’t going to work, she wasn’t going to invest her time lifting a finger. She’s done enough already. “Things aren’t going to be the way it once was. I promise you that.”“Tell me you’re sure you know what you’re doing?” Kim nibbled on her lower lip. “I can’t promise you I know what I’m doing, Kim. But my heart is in the

“You really should stop feeling this way and making us feel like we’re strangers as well,” Kim frowned. “We’re here because we love and care about you, that’s the truth. You’re part of our lives so I don’t see how you keep interfering in what you’re a major part of. You’ve got to accept that so you’d stop feeling like you owe us something because you don’t.”Ava sighed. “Okay, you’re right and I’m sorry for feeling this way. It’s unusual to see a lot of people wanting to help me at the same time and that’s why I reacted that way,” “It’s okay, we don’t hold it against you. We know your past and how you’re still getting used to a couple of good gestures. Kim suffers from the same problem as well.” Violet assured her. “So, you mentioned that Sebastian woke up a while ago?” Kim asked, eager to steer the conversation away from their childhood. She wasn’t prepared to visit memories that she had worked so hard to repress. “Yes, he did. He wasn’t a hundred percent conscious and the doctors

Ava walked back into the hospital room as soon as the doctor mentioned it was okay for her to return. She walked back into the room to see Sebastian soundly asleep. “Is everything alright, doctor?” Ava sounded worried. “Did he go to sleep on his own or did he pass out?”“We gave him a sedative to keep him under for a couple of hours until he regains his full strength, he should feel much after he wakes up this time around and that’s what we’re hoping for. When that happens, we can then begin the final stage of his recovery process.” Ava nodded. “Thank you, doctor. We’re so grateful for the help you’ve rendered.”“It’s my pleasure to help. I’ve known Sebastian since we were both boys and my father has been the Bancroft’s family doctor for decades. He’s like family to me as well.” “Do I need to call you guys once he wakes up?” Ava asked, her eyes fixed on Sebastian. “You don’t need to, we’d be counting down the hours ourselves and carrying out checkups before midnight. It’s been a week since the ugly incident and Sebastian hadn’t woken up yet. Ava was struggling to pull it together but she knew she didn’t have any other option, she couldn’t afford to break down right now not when she had to look after herself and the baby as well given the fact that the pregnancy was entering into its crucial phase. The doctor urged her to give him time and be patient till he decided to come around. His vitals were good and his condition was improving, he was going to wake up any moment from now, the doctor would always say giving her a warm smile in return. The conviction in his voice always seemed to calm Ava’s nerves so she waited calmly until Sebastian decided to come around. She was in his hospital room, sitting on a chair next to the hospital bed, her knees were pulled up under her chin with her face buried between a historical romance novel by Nora Roberts. “Life isn’t meant to be fair to everyone,” Damian offered Ava a soft smile. “It’s just the way life is and we’ve got to make the best out of what we’re given.”“Sebastian doesn’t deserve this,” Ava grumbled.“No one does but shit happens.” Damian shuffled his feet as he struggled to find a comfortable situation. “Do you think he’s going to come out of this? Be honest with me. I could use that right now if you don’t mind.”“Sebastian’s tough as nails. He’s one of the most stubborn men I’ve ever met and if there’s anyone I know who’s going to come out of this, it’s Sebastian.”“Thank you, Damian.” Ava rubbed her arms, trying to calm her nerves. “You’re welcome.
