Ryan's POV

The drive to the hospital was tense. Serena sat stiffly in the passenger seat, clutching her phone like a lifeline.

She kept looking at it, her lips pulled together. I wanted to reassure her, but I wasn't sure how.

“What hospital?" I enquired, breaking the stillness.

“Private Children's Hospital," she answered, her voice clipped.

I nodded and sped up. We got to the hospital in record time.

Serena got out of the car before I could turn off the engine, her heels clicking rapidly against the sidewalk as she rushed inside.

I followed closely, unable to stop the sinking feeling in my chest.

At the front desk, she enquired about her daughter with a mix of worry and authority.

“Amy Winthrop. "Where is she?"

“Room 208," the receptionist replied.

Serena did not wait for any additional information. She turned and ran down the corridor, her urgency drawing me along.

When we arrived at the front of the room, she came to a sudden halt and turned to me.

Her eyes were full of contradictory feelings. "You don't have to come in," she said.

I paused, not wanting to interrupt such a private time.

“I'll wait here," I suggested. She offered a brief nod and disappeared into the room, the door closing behind her.

I leaned against the wall and crossed my arms. My thoughts raced.

I was almost positive that Amy was Serena's daughter. But was she mine, too?

Serena's POV

My heart broke when I walked into the room and saw Amy lying on the hospital bed.

Her petite frame appeared delicate, her wavy hair tangled, and her blue eyes sad.

“Mommy!" she wailed, extending her arms. I ran to her side and carefully scooped her up.

“Oh, my baby. I'm here. Mommy is here." Her arms clung to my neck, and I could feel her tiny body trembling against mine.

“She's fine," the nurse reassured me while changing Amy's IV. "A little shaken, but nothing serious. "The doctor will be in shortly to confirm."

"Thank you," I said softly, touching Amy's hair.

Amy sniffled and drew back slightly, her bright blue eyes staring up at me. "Mommy, isn't that the man from the lift outside the door?"

I froze, my heart missing a beat. "What man?"

“The one from yesterday. He held the lift for me," she added, her interest piqued.

“I think I saw him through the door's little glass window earlier."

I forced a serene grin. "It's probably just someone who resembles him, honey. Don't worry about it right now."

Amy bent her head and studied me. "Mommy, he was polite. Very nice."

“I'm sure he was, baby," I replied, kissing her forehead. "But let's not think about that now, okay?"

She nodded, her energy diminishing as the nurse returned to take her vital signs.

As I sat with Amy, my thoughts kept turning to Ryan. I knew he was outside waiting.

It was exactly like him—stubborn and relentless.

Ryan's POV

I paced outside the hospital room in serious concentration.

If Amy turns out to be my daughter, everything will change.

I couldn't stop thinking about how Serena had stared at me earlier, her defences raised like a castle.

I was sure she was hiding something.

Finally, the door opened, and Serena emerged. Her face was pallid, and her shoulders drooped from fatigue.

“How is she?" I enquired.

"She's okay," she murmured softly. "Only a few bruises. The doctor says she'll be able to go home soon." Relief flooded over me.

“That's good."

We remained there in awkward silence for a while before I revealed what had been bothering me.

“Serena, is Amy my daughter?" Her eyes widened, and she looked back at the door, as if she was afraid someone would hear.

“Ryan, this isn't the time—"

“It is," I interrupted her.

“I need to know. Five years ago, I made the biggest mistake in my life. I allowed someone else to come between us, and I served you with divorce papers because I was too blind to recognise what I already had. I thought I was pursuing love, but I had no idea I was leaving it behind."

Serena's expression darkened. "You're oversimplifying things, Ryan. You didn't just leave me… you broke me."

Her remarks hit me like a blow to the chest, but I refused to back down.

“Yes, I did. I will never forgive myself for that. But if Amy is mine, I want to be present in her life. I have to be."

Serena looked down, her hands trembling.

For a second, I believed she was going to tell me the truth. But before she could speak, the nurse appeared at the doorway.

“She's asking for you," the nurse informed Serena.

Serena nodded and returned her attention to me.

“We'll talk another time, Ryan," she remarked before entering the room.

I exhaled softly, frustration and hope battling within me.

~~~
I lingered outside the hospital because I couldn't force myself to leave.
Amy was still asleep in Serena's arms when she eventually stepped out.
Her small head lay on Serena's shoulder, and her hair framed her calm expression.
Serena seems shocked to find me still there.
“You didn't have to wait," she explained quietly.
“I was going to drop you off at home," I said. My eyes were locked on Amy, and my heart felt like it was about to burst.
"You don't need to worry about it. Someone brought my automobile here.” Serena said as she walked towards her car.
I followed, offering to help. "Let me carry her."
She looked unsure, but eventually nodded and delicately moved Amy into my arms.
Holding her seemed weird. She was so little and lovely. My heart ached from emotions I didn't understand.
We arrived at Serena's car, and I gently placed Amy in her car seat.
I stepped back and turned to face Serena. "We need to continue our previous discussion," I reiterated.
She glanced at me with cautious eyes. "Oh, please. "Not now, Ryan."
I wasn't ready to back down, but seeing how fatigued she appeared, I hesitantly spoke. "Soon, Serena. You owe me an explanation."
She did not answer, but I noticed the conflicted glances in her eyes as she got into her car and drove away.
I hurried to my car, got in, and began following her.
    Ryan returned to his apartment in the early morning hours, the sun just beginning to rise. His head felt heavy, and his body ached from the intensity of the emotions that had surged through him last night. As he entered his apartment, he froze. Kate was sitting on the couch, her legs crossed, her arms folded tightly against her chest, glaring at him.“How did you get in?” Ryan asked, his voice strained, still reeling from the night he had spent with Serena.Kate’s gaze flickered with annoyance as she stood up, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor.“Your mother gave me the spare key. I’ve been waiting for you. Where the hell have you been, Ryan? You were supposed to be at my place last night!” She leaned forward, her tone demanding. Ryan closed the door behind him and let out a long sigh. He didn’t want to deal with this right now. He just wanted to go to bed. “I was at the office. You know how it is. Long night. Lots of work.”Kate’s eyes narrowed, but she didn’t imm
    Kate sat in her plush apartment, her fingers drumming impatiently on the armrest of her chair. Across from her sat a middle-aged man with a calm demeanor, a briefcase resting on his lap. He was the private investigator she had hired, and he was finally here with answers.“Well?” Kate demanded, her tone sharp. “What did you find?”The man opened his briefcase, pulling out a folder thick with papers and photographs. He spread a few pictures on the table before her, one catching Kate’s immediate attention. It was Ryan, standing outside a modest house with a woman.“This,” the investigator began, pointing to the photo, “ This is Serena. She’s been running her own company since the divorce, and it seems Ryan has been visiting her regularly.”Kate’s jaw tightened. Her gaze lingered on the image of Serena, her teeth grinding audibly. “Serena,” she hissed. “Of course, it’s her. He’s going back to his ex-wife?”The investigator cleared his throat, sensing her rising anger. “It doesn’t
    Serena adjusted her blazer as her assistant, Emma, stepped into the office, a clipboard in hand. Her presence reminded Serena of the embarrassing scene earlier. She avoided Emma’s gaze, forcing herself to maintain composure.“Emma,” Serena started, pretending to be engrossed in the files on her desk, “what’s next on my schedule for today?”Emma hesitated, her usual cheerful demeanor a bit restrained. “Well, you have a dinner meeting with Mr. Pierre Rousseau from Paris. He flew in specifically for this meeting, so—”Serena sighed heavily, cutting her off. “Cancel it.”Emma blinked in surprise. “Cancel it?”“Yes,” Serena said briskly, still not looking up. “Tell him something came up. Reschedule for another day.”Emma’s face twisted with discomfort. “I would, Ms. Serena, but… Mr. Rousseau made it very clear how important this meeting is. He flew all the way from Paris, and it’s regarding the joint venture proposal.”Serena groaned, leaning back in her chair. She pinched the bridge
I saw you a few minutes ago—at the restaurant. You were laughing with some guy. Who was he?” Instead of responding, Serena’s lips curled into a sly smile. “And why does it matter, Ryan?” she asked, her tone laced with amusement.“It matters because—” he started, but Serena cut him off.“Because what?” She chuckled and took a step closer to him. “Because you’re jealous?”“I’m not jealous!” Ryan snapped, his voice rising.“Really?” Serena teased, her smile growing wider. “Because it sure sounds like jealousy to me.” Ryan opened his mouth to argue, but before he could get another word out, Serena closed the dista
    Ryan sat in his office, flipping through files, but his mind wasn’t on work. He kept thinking about Serena—the way she had dismissed him that morning, the way she had looked at him without a trace of emotion. It bothered him more than he cared to admit.Just then, his office door opened, and Jefferson, his personal assistant, walked in with a clipboard in hand.“Sir, you have back-to-back meetings today,” Jefferson said, scanning the list. “You’ve been postponing a lot of them, and now they’re all piling up.”Ryan sighed and leaned back in his chair. “Just reschedule some of them, Jefferson.     Ryan woke up with a pounding headache. He hadn’t been able to sleep properly all night. He had called Serena multiple times after returning from Kate’s house, but she didn’t pick up any of his calls. Each ring that went unanswered only fueled his frustration.He groaned and sat up, rubbing his face. “Why won’t she just answer?” he muttered to himself, staring at his phone screen. A dozen missed calls and no response. Dragging himself out of bed, he freshened up, took a quick shower, and got dressed for work. Today, he had two meetings lined up in the morning, and his plan was simple—get through them as fast as possible and head straight to Rocky’s Design to see Serena.“Maybe she’s just playing hard to get,” he mumbled to himself as he adjusted his tie in front of the mirror. But deep down, a nagging feeling told him otherwise. Serena wasn’t the type to play games—not with him.By the time he arrived at his company, Jefferson was already waiting for him at the door. “Goo
    Serena stepped into the company’s lobby that morning, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor. Something felt off the moment she entered. There was a shift in the air, a tension she couldn’t quite place. The usual bright good mornings from her employees were missing. Instead, hushed whispers filled the space. Eyes darted toward her before quickly looking away, as if they had just been caught gossiping.She frowned, her grip tightening around Amy’s small hand. It wasn’t the first time she had walked into the office feeling like she was the subject of discussion, but today, the staring was worse.Amy, sharp as always, tugged on her hand and whispered, “Mommy, why is everyone looking at us like that?”Serena forced a small chuckle, hoping to brush it off. “They’re probably talking about work, sweetheart.     Kate sat on the edge of her bed, staring blankly at her reflection in the mirror. Dark circles framed her eyes, a testament to the restless night she had spent tossing and turning. She hadn’t bothered to apply any makeup—what was the point? Today wasn’t about looking beautiful. It was about sending a message.She didn’t dress to kill, either. Instead, she threw on a plain, oversized sweater and a pair of faded jeans. Her hair, usually styled to perfection, hung loosely over her shoulders, slightly tangled from the way she had run her fingers through it in frustration all night.Today, she wasn’t the glamorous woman people expected her to be. Today, she was a scorned lover, a woman with a broken heart and a tragic story to tell.Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her purse and made her way to Rolly’s apartment.Rolly, her best friend and the only person she could trust, opened the door with a puzzled expression. “Kate? He wasn’t in the mood for another confrontation, not after the crazy make out night he had with Serena, but there was no way around it. He had to face her.Gathering his composure, he stepped out of the car and made his way to the front door. As soon as he opened it, he saw her.Kate was sitting on the couch, her legs crossed, dressed in nothing but a silky nightgown. Her blonde hair was slightly messy, and her eyes were red and swollen from crying. Tear tracks stained her cheeks, and her lower lip trembled as she glared daggers at him.Ryan sighed. This was exactly what he expected. Kate never disappoints him with acting nonchalant to whatever he does.She sniffled, her voice weak yet sharp. “Where were you last night, Ryan?”He sh
