Chapter 2
“What is happening? She panicked. She walked further into the crowd of people and what she saw was nothing she had anticipated. The once grumpy and rude receptionist was laying in the pool of her own blood. She gasped and took three steps back out of fright wondering what could have happened just within forty minutes of her departure to meet with her future supervisor.“What the hell happened here?” She asked a nurse who was also covered in blood.“Her ex husband happened” was her simple reply. Before anything else could take place, she was immediately rushed to the ER and the police took over by interrogating the remaining receptionist that was present at the moment. She just hopes that her internship wouldn’t get affected by this situation. Don’t get her wrong, she just has a lot to deal with and loads of debts to pay off. She really feels sorry for the grumpy receptionist. But, Why would her husband try to kill her? Nevertheless, she left the hospital and went to the nearest cafe to have her breakfast. While waiting for her order to arrive, she dialed her mother’s number and she immediately answered as if she was waiting for her call."Hello mom, how are you today?" She inquired sipping her coffee and chewing on her pancake all at the same time. She chatted for a few more minutes and when she was done, she left forgetting her student ID and some documents on the table. Hours later, she received a call from an unknown number and became instantly happy thinking it was her supervisor, and immediately answered with a cheerful voice."Yes Mrs. Ben" she started"Umm.. Sorry but I am not Mrs Ben, I am Rose. The cafe attendant you visited earlier this morning" she heard the other person say"Oh, I'm sorry I thought you were someone else" she apologised the once big smile on her face started withering away clumsily. "How can I help you miss Rose?" She asked"First of all, I hope I am speaking with Emma Newton?" She verified first and with her affirmation she continued, "you forgot your ID card in the cafe and I have it with me here. Can you come over tommorow and get it? It would be nice""Thank you so much Rose! I totally forgot that I had it on me. I will come by tomorrow and collect it, thank you so much" she said and hung up. She thanked her stars for sending Rose to her if not she would have been so stranded without her student ID. Being at home and doing almost nothing, she became bored and decided to take a look at her apartment and surprisingly, it was up to her taste. When she was done, she prepared dinner and eat all by herself. Wasting no time in taking her bath, she prepared herself to sleep and in no time, she dosed off. What a day, totally wasted. The next morning, she dragged her sleepy body off the comfortable bedding and made her way to the washroom to have her bath. When she was certain she was done, she went to the cafe and met with the attendant that called her the previous night and instantly, they became fast friends.“Yesterday, Alex Lightwood made his gracious presence at my cafe. I was so excited to see him. Do you know, he even looks hotter in reality? He is every girl's dream. I wish some miracle could just happen and I would see myself as his girlfriend. Holy ship!” She blabbered on with dreamy eyes. The confused and nonchalant look Emma had on was what caught her attention and she halted her noise. “What? What is it?”“Who is Alex Lightwood? And why are you so hyper active mentioning his name?” She asked“What?” Rose whisper-yelled.“What, what?” Emma continued offering her a box of chocolate which she accepted.“You mean you don’t know who Alex Lightwood is?” She asked again and with Emma’s confirmation she sighed loudly. “Alex Lightwood is the youngest billionaire there ever is. The owner of the billionaire dollar company in the hole of Abuja and also, the hottest man on earth” she exaggerated with dreamy eyes.“So what does that have to do with me and my ID card?” They have nothing to do with her card for now but later on, it would.“Oh! About that, he was the one that found it, alongside this document that almost looks more like a resume to me. I wonder why you are carelessly keeping something so important anyhow. But that isn’t the case here, he told me to give you his card when you come for your belongings and here it is” she dipped her hands into her apron and fetched a golden beautifully designed card and handed it over to her. As she collected it, she scrunched up her nose and analyzed the piece of item in her hand. She couldn’t deny it, it was a good design.“And why does he want to speak to me?” She asked, pocketing the card and arranging her items together.“Well maybe, because you have… I don’t know! But, come on dude the whole Alex Lightwood wants you to contact him? I really can’t believe it even though we just met, I am so happy for you” she sincerely uttered smiling at her.“Thank you so much Rose, I wouldn’t know what to do if I had lost this document”“No worries, I got ya back”. They chatted for another few minutes and Emma decided to leave, she needed to let Rose go because the other assistant was hardly coping well. They bade farewell to each other and Emma left. She needed to go back home and wait for Mrs Ben’s call for the whole day. Without a job, her day was just as wasted as never before and for that she left suffocated and frustrated. Her ringing phone was what brought her back to planet earth and she quickly answered.“Hello?” She asked. But the person on the other end refused to answer. “Mom?” She called again but the only thing she heard was sniffs. At that point, her mind started racing a marathon.“Emma, your father is in the hospital and in dire need of surgery, we don’t have that money now.” She cried more. Even though she knew her father was sick the last time she saw him, she didn’t know it was critical and for that she felt useless. She doesn’t have a job yet, her father is in a critical condition and with no money to pay off his surgery. Can this day get any worse for her? She knew it would, so she kept her calm and tried persuading her wailing mother till she calmed down and promised to send the money for her father’s surgery. But, the question was, where is she going to get that kind of money from? Almost two million. She has no job and no goddamned saving, so how?“But dear? How are you going to provide that kind of money? Has your internship been accepted?” Her mother asked. She closed her eyes knowing what she was going to say next was nothing close to the truth but nonetheless, said,“Yes mom! I was just about to call and tell you that, but I see you beat me to it” she lied, chuckling lightly.“Oh dear, I am so happy for you. When did it get accepted?” She asked further. What was she going to say now?“This morning mom, I got a call from my supervisor and she told me that I can start working in two days, I am so happy mom” she continued her eyes brimming with unfortunate tears. She felt bad for lying but, she can’t tell her mother that her internship is still being processed in this situation, she would feel so helpless and that is the last thing she wants for her mother to go through when she knows she is the only one taking care of her father. That would be bothersome.“All the best Emma, I knew you could do it. Am so proud of you” her mother said.“Thank you so much mom, am hanging up now okay? Take care of yourself and dad, bye” when she ended the call, she slumped down onto the couch and sobbed till her heart felt numb and couldn’t cry anymore. Her phone beeped once more indicating a message and she snatched it from the couch she was sitting on. She opened it and saw the last thing she expected to see.Her internship was not approved. She kept on staring at her phone screen as if the words there were not meant for her but for someone else. She knew her day would get worse but she didn’t expect it to unfold like this. She couldn’t believe all her hard work and dedication were worth nothing. She felt like screaming her lungs out or even breaking something but, after all, she was still going to buy them back because it is useful. She felt helpless. Remembering that Rose gave her a business card, she reached for her pocket and retrieved it instantly, glaring at her last hope.“Now this is my last hope” she thought loudly. Punching in the numbers, she placed her phone on her ears and guess what?…..Chapter 3 And guess what, it ranged out. She expected that, she tried again and this time, someone answered that call on the third ring. “Hello?” She asked, carefully clutching her phone tightly. “Am I speaking with Mr lightwood?” “No, but with his receptionist. How May I help you today?” A female voice answered politely and at this, Emma found it in herself to calm down a little bit. She just got tensed for no good reason. “I am Emma Newton, I was asked to call this number” she replied “Oh! Yeah, actually I have been anticipating your call since yesterday, Miss Emma. The boss would like to meet with you if that is alright” she asked. Why would he want to meet someone like her? She has nothing to offer him nor does he hold anything that belongs to her which he wants to return, so why? “Yeah” she answered back “Great then, I will send a car to pick you by 5pm this evening. Is that okay?” “Yeah it is” and she hung up. Glancing at the wall clock that hangs opposite her, she had
Chapter 4“I heard you applied for an internship in a private hospital and got rejected right?” How did he know about that? Only she knew of it. Was he stalking her? What ever the case may, she was displeased. “How did you know about that?” She mumbled her perplexed expression giving her out. He chuckled and sat upright turning his attention back to his computer. “I also know your family is in debt and your father hospitalized, but you have no money whatsoever to pay for his surgery?” “How did you know all that? She questioned with a raging heart. What is happening? “That doesn’t matter now, Miss Newton, as I said earlier, I have a job offer for you which you can’t afford to miss knowing that you are in need of money” he concluded now glancing back at her with a sinister stare. She gulped and said, “What is the offer?” She mumbled “I want you to be my caretaker!” He announced. Sitting there as if glued to her seat, she dumbfoundedly stared back at him. She opened her mouth to s
Chapter 5 “What happened David? Tell me” her alarmed voice asked “Em? It is dad” he replied with stammering voice. David’s cry only meant one thing, her father was in a critical condition. “What happened to him?” She choked out her disturbed self longed forgotten. “He was just having his meal a minute ago and now he is in the hospital in a dire need of surgery” how can that be possible? When she left him, he was coping quite well and was even going out for jogs sometimes when he got bored sitting at home. “What are the doctors saying now?” She just hopes it isn't bad news“They really haven’t said anything specific yet, he just needs surgery done at the earliest” what will she do now? She doesn’t have a job nor does she have any money. Her only option is to be shameless and ask for an advance payment from her employer. How ridiculous would she sound when she goes to him. Already, she had started seeing how much disrespect she would lose from him. Not that she has any in the firs
Seeing her walk through the compound gate was like a blessing she never knew was awaiting her, suddenly, her little self loathing stunt followed the breeze and a big smile appeared right after it. She couldn’t believe her eyes. She rushed back to her living room and opened the main door to slip into the elevator to meet her long lost best friend, Elena Gilbert. As soon as the doors opened, she made a mad dash out of the elevator and ran into her friend’s arms giving her a bone crushing hug. “I can’t breathe,” Elena choked out. “Oh, am sorry I just…” she trailed off, releasing her carefully with a mighty smile on her face. “How I have missed you can’t really be put in words” she said softly. The pale skinned blonde with blue eyes and a plump lips wearing an expensive but comfortable clothes smiled at her best friend and replied,“I missed you too honey” Elena stated. After reminiscing a little about their past lifestyle, they decided to go into the apartment and have a very good con
“What the hell is all this?” He yelled angrily at his PA Carol who was standing and shaking silently. She had never seen him so riled up like this before, so what is the matter? “I gave you a simple task and even that you can’t do carefully? Then tell me what the bloody hell are you still doing in my office?” He demanded. Getting angry was really not his thing but since the day he met with Emma Newton he was not himself again. The littlest of things makes him so mad that he had already fired a few of his hard working employees already and it already seemed like he was about to fire Carol. “Am sorry sir” was all she could say to him right that moment. All she was told was that he had asked her to prepare all the files that required his signature on his desk before he arrived the next morning and unfortunately for her, he came earlier than expected that morning. But seriously, what was her fault in that? She apologized for the uptheenth time without making eye contact because she wa
She turned around slowly as if she was scared the lion at her back would just jump at her if she made a wrong move. She dropped the cloth she was about to hang on the bed and stood up carefully walking to the young lady standing at her bedroom’s threshold. The young lady, who had brunette colored hair that stopped at her mid waist with an olive skin and rather large black eyes, was already assumed by Emma that she was in her teens. Maybe 13 or 14 years old thereabout. But why does it feel like the girl already hated her guts? With the way she was glaring at Emma, you could already see the hatred dripping off her. “Hi,” Emma said curtly. This girl is giving her goosebumps already. “I asked you a question?” She replied disdainfully. “I am your new nanny,” she answered. The girl made a quick mocking chuckle and let herself in, then sat in the previous space her father sat on. “Our nanny you say?” She asked. Emma already knew that this girl is really going to be a pain in the ass not
She gulped and plastered a small smile on her face before she answered, “I um.. brought you dinner” lord! This girl is really making her lose her mind. Whenever she’s anywhere close to her, she just knows that there will be problems. She wonders why she hates her so much. “I didn’t ask you too, now leave my room. Outsiders are not permitted in here” what…? Outsiders? Is she kidding her? “Look Amelia,” she started calmly but God knows that she so wanted to smack her hard across her face. “Don’t! I don’t want to hear it, so you can just leave me the hell alone. Stop trying to be my mom” is that what she thinks she is doing right now? She was just trying to be nice to her, that's all. Why would he want to be her mom? She has no reason to. “Look Amelia I am not trying to be your mom or something I just wanted to be nice to you and that’s all. I brought dinner for you because I thought you might be a little hungry because you didn’t really have anything earlier. But if you still think
He squinted his eyes a few more times and to his disappointment, she was gone. So it was all an illusion?! He felt… disappointed? But why? Clueless. He hissed and made his way to the bathroom to take a cold shower because his body was too hot for him to have a warm shower. After his bath, he slipped into his nightie and went to his bed to have some sleep and soon enough he slept off. The next morning, as he came down for breakfast, he was greeted by Emma and Abby as they sat together with her nanny feeding her sweetly like she was her actual mother and for a moment, he wished she was. He shook his head and went to sit down and the servant dished his plate to the brim. He noticed how Abby was all smiles as she ate what Emma was feeding her then he glanced around the table and noticed that his other kids were missing. “Where are Julia and Amelia?” He asked “Oh, they are still getting ready,” she answered back. He remembered her face from the previous night and how her voice sounded
It was late, and the house had quieted down for the night. Emma stood in the kitchen, tidying up after dinner. The faint hum of the dishwasher filled the silence, but her thoughts were louder. Matt’s message had lingered in her mind all day, making her stomach churn with unease.Just as she reached to turn off the kitchen lights, she heard footsteps. Turning around, she saw Alex standing in the doorway. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, his tie slightly loosened. He looked tired, but there was something more—a weight in his gaze that she couldn’t quite place.“I didn’t think anyone was still awake,” Emma said, her voice soft.Alex walked in, his hands sliding into his pockets. “I couldn’t sleep. Thought I’d grab some water,” he replied, though the way his eyes lingered on her made it clear she was the reason he’d come downstairs.Emma hesitated. She had been avoiding him since the awkward tension Matt had stirred. But now, with Alex standing so close, his presence felt magnetic.“You
The phone buzzed faintly in his hand, but Alex didn’t dare look at it. His pulse thundered in his ears as he tossed the device onto his desk like it might burn him. Suddenly, the room seemed too quiet, the stillness amplifying the weight of what he had just done. What if she doesn’t reply? The thought lingered, bitter and sharp. He ran a hand through his hair, pacing the room like a caged animal. For someone who made billion-dollar decisions daily, this was unnervingly paralyzing. Business was predictable; people, especially someone like Emma, were not.Alex’s mind spiraled with possibilities, each one more unsettling than the last. Maybe she’d laugh it off. Or worse, maybe she’d ignore it altogether, leaving his carefully constructed message to fester in the void of her inbox. But what if she replied? What if she was honest, and the honesty wasn’t what he wanted to hear?He sat back down heavily, his elbows braced on the desk as he leaned forward, burying his face in his hands. The l
Alex sat in his spacious office, the skyline of Asokoro stretched out before him. It was late into the evening, the city lights casting a soft glow on his face as he stared at the stacks of paperwork in front of him. The glow from his computer screen was the only light, yet it didn’t seem to matter; he wasn’t really seeing the documents or emails in front of him. His mind kept drifting back to Emma, to the quiet, fleeting moments they had shared. The air in the room felt thick, suffocating, like the weight of his own emotions had transformed the space into something unrecognizable. The files in front of him were no different from the thoughts he kept trying to suppress. Everything about his day—from handling business matters to dealing with the children—had been a distraction, a poor attempt at keeping his mind occupied. But the more he tried to focus on his work, the more his thoughts kept circling back to Emma.It had started the moment Matt had appeared, asking Emma to prepare for
The house felt unnervingly quiet. The other kids were downstairs, but Julia found herself holed up in her room, nursing a discomfort she wasn’t quite ready to face. She tossed and turned on her bed, irritated by the odd feeling gnawing at her. She wasn’t sick—she knew what was happening. She just wasn’t ready to deal with it.Her mind kept wandering back to Emma. That girl. Julia had tried to avoid her at all costs, but somehow, she kept slipping in, threading her way into their lives, stealing moments with Abby and Ethan. It was infuriating. Julia liked being in control, and right now, it felt like Emma was taking over, shifting the balance in a way that made her anxious. But today, there was something else. A heaviness in her stomach that wouldn’t go away, making her more irritable than usual. She tossed another pillow against the wall and pulled the blanket over her head, wishing the whole world would just leave her alone.Just then, a knock on her door startled her, followed by a
Later that afternoon, Emma was tending to the garden outside. The sun was warm on her skin, the rhythmic sound of the shears in her hand keeping her thoughts from drifting back to her conversation with Alex.“Hey, stranger.”Emma turned to see Matt leaning against the fence, his usual confident grin in place. He was dressed casually, his jeans slightly dusty as though he’d just come from the ranch.“Matt,” she said, surprised but smiling. “What brings you here?”He shrugged. “Saw your car parked out front and thought I’d drop by. Hope that’s okay.”“Of course,” she said, setting down her shears. “I was just finishing up.”Matt’s eyes softened as he studied her. “You know, I’ve been thinking about our last date. I had a great time.”Emma’s heart skipped a beat. She knew where this was heading, and while Matt was charming and kind, her feelings felt more complicated than ever now.“I’m glad you did,” she said carefully, brushing a stray leaf from her sleeve.“And I was hoping we could d
Later that night, the house was quiet, the kids finally tucked into bed after a long evening of stories and laughter. Emma sat on the porch swing, a blanket draped over her lap and a mug of tea in her hands. She stared out at the darkened yard, her mind spinning with thoughts she couldn’t quite untangle. The sound of the door opening behind her startled her, but she didn’t turn around. She knew it was Alex.“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, his voice soft.Emma shook her head, taking a sip of her tea. “Too much on my mind, I guess.”Alex stepped out onto the porch, his hands in his pockets. He stood there for a moment, as if debating whether to join her. Finally, he sat down on the swing, leaving a careful distance between them. They sat in silence for a while, the quiet of the night settling around them.“About earlier,” Alex began, his voice low. “I didn’t mean to make things complicated.”Emma glanced at him, her expression guarded. “You didn’t. Not really.”Alex let out a soft laugh, th
The next morning, Emma woke up earlier than usual, her mind clouded by conflicting emotions. She had enjoyed her date with Matt; he was charming and attentive, yet she couldn’t deny the lingering thoughts of Alex that kept creeping in at the most inconvenient moments. She brushed off the feelings as irrational and focused on getting ready for the day.Downstairs, Alex sat at the dining table, his eyes glued to his laptop screen but his mind elsewhere. He hadn't slept much; thoughts of Emma and her date consumed him. Every time he pictured Matt’s smug smile as he escorted Emma out of the mansion, Alex felt an inexplicable pang of jealousy that he refused to acknowledge. As Emma entered the room, the sound of her heels clicking on the marble floor pulled Alex from his thoughts. She looked radiant, her hair tied back in a neat ponytail, her outfit professional yet effortlessly chic. Alex’s gaze lingered on her for a moment longer than he intended, but he quickly masked his thoughts with
“What the hell?” He mouthed, staring at the computer screen with irritation. What had he done now? He shot the screen closed and sat on his bed thinking of a way to approach Emma now that he knew what he had done to her. No wonder she was trying so hard to keep the truth to herself because it was obviously embarrassing to say it out loud. Finally he made his way to the kitchen and still saw her there seated with a mug in her hand sipping something. “You are back” she stated matter of fact. Sensing his uneasiness she asked, “what happened? Why are you so gloomy all of a sudden?” He turned around walking majestically like a king but only he knew the truth behind his composure. His heart was running a marathon just by staring at her beautiful face. “Ms. Newton…” he started, “what ever happened between us yesterday was a mistake, I was drunk and didn’t know what I was doing so don’t get any wrong ideas okay?” His voice as cold as ice vocalized while his stares sent chills down her spi
By the time she could comprehend what he was about to do, it was already too late as he had his arm snakes around her tiny waist pulling her closer to his chest. With his intoxicated breath, he leaned in and pressed his firm but soft lips on her making her shudder slightly. She shifted uncomfortably trying to pry his arms from around her delicate waist but all her attempts were rendered useless, because the more she struggled to free herself, the tighter he held her. “Mr Lightwood…” she started but her voice came out as a sensual moan as he was now kissing his way down her neck. Having a little taste of her made him lose his senses and go wild; he couldn't control himself. His hands skillfully caressed her back pushing her to himself as if it wasn’t enough that their bodies were already too close. Sucking on her earlobe, Emma let out a satisfying moan and wrapped her arms around his shoulder tilting her head to grant him more access. Feeling the heat brewing between them their san
