Chapter 45

Avery woke up to hear Zoe screaming in her sleep. He watched her struggle with herself and saw the agony on her face. She was calling Francis; her ex-husband, asking him not to say anything because he would be killed.

He got closer to her and held her arm. “Zoe.” He called calmly, in order not to startle her. “Hey, Zoe. Wake up, it is a dream.”

She shrieked and then opened her eyes. She looked at him, almost hitting him in the process of sitting up, but he was able to hold her before she did that.

“Hey.” He called. “It is me, It’s Avery.”

She stopped struggling immediately and relaxed on him while he hugged her to himself. “It was just a dream, Zoe”. He continued to sooth her. “It was just a dream.”

He held her for a moment, whispering words of comfort to her and when she was relaxed enough, moved her away a little.

“Why do you keep dreaming about it, Zoe?” He asked, hoping that it was an appropriate topic for her to discuss. “Were you there when it happened?”
