"My what?" Zoe exclaimed as if she had heard wrong. She had only one husband and he was six feet below the ground. Unless Francis reincarnated into this tall devil with amazing hair, then her mother better started talking.
"What are you saying?"
The man smiled at her but remained quiet.
"Don't sound too shocked Zoe." Margery said. "He is Avery Trent, very popular. You should know him. Trent Airlines is...."
"I don't mean that type of explaination mother." Zoe said, interrupting her. "I'm asking what you meant by he is my husband."
"Because he is." Margery said to her. "You guys are almost married, we just need your signature." Then she stretched her hands towards Avery who gave her a manilla envelope. "In this document. You see?" Margery brought out the marriage certificates and handed it over to her and Zoe couldn't believe her eyes.
"What are you doing, mum?"
"Oh, Margery you haven't told her yet?" The man asked, shaking his head. "That's such a shame."
"So sorry Avery." Margery apologized, turning to look at her daughter.
"Can I have a word with you?" Zoe asked, standing on her feet and when Margery didn't budge, shouted. "Now?"
"Yeah, sure." Margery said and followed her into the adjoining room.
"What are you up to mother?" Zoe asked her.
"You need to marry him, Zoe." Margery said to her immediately, peeping to make sure no one was eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Why?" Zoe asked. "What have you done?"
Margery remained quiet, biting her lips. Yes, she was a controlling woman, but an angry Zoe is not someone to mess around with.
"It's the company." She answered.
"And what about it?" Zoe asked.
"It's in trouble, Zoe. If you don't marry Avery, we might lose it forever."
"We?" Zoe asked. "Ever since papa passed away, you have been the only one running the company. Why do I have to be the one to clean up your mess?"
"Because it's our company. Whether you like it or not, the company is ours and your father adored it."
"Don't you dare use him to manipulate me." Zoe exclaimed.
"He worked hard." Margery continued knowing that was the weakest point to use to get to her. Everyday he worked to make it what it is now. We can't lose it, Zoe."
"Are you listening to yourself right now?" Zoe asked her, pacing the room and then coming back to look into her eyes. "You want me to save the company with my freedom? You're selling me off mother."
"I am not." Margery defended.
"And you are doing so, just six months after the death of my husband. How does that even sound to you?"
"Zoe...."
'Did you kill Francis?"
"Zoe!" Margery exclaimed in horror, looking wide eyed at her daughter.
"There's nothing you cannot do to achieve your aim. If you can sell me off without my consent, then why won't you kill Francis to make me free to do your bid?"
"Don't speak that way to me young woman." Margery said. "I made a wrong business decision that is threatening to fold our company and Avery Trent is offering to help pull it out of the well. We should be grateful."
"On my own expense?" Zoe asked, moving closer to her again with clenched teeth. "I am mourning mother, I am a widow."
"He doesn't need to know that." Margery responded in a hushed voice. "He won't know if you don't tell him. You told me three months ago that you want your marriage and everything that came with it to be buried ." She continued. "You are a young, unmarried woman to Avery Trent and you can keep it that way."
Zoe stared at her, breathing from ear to ear. Then when she was calm, opened her mouth to speak again.
"You're sure he doesn't know about it?"
"He doesn't. You can save the business from collapsing. Also, you don't need to love him. Francis has your heart and that's okay, just be his wife." She said. "It will keep your hands and head filled until you forget everything about..."
"Francis is not just a memory mother, so don't you dare."
Margery nodded her head, halting her words immediately. There was no need to provoke her further.
Zoe stormed out of the room, back into the green house and Avery looked up to indulge her. They stared at each other for a moment with Zoe assessing him and to his surprise, she bent, took the marriage certificate and pen from the table and signed the papers.

"What is your favorite holiday?" Avery asked Zoe as they sat in the back seat of his black limousine, heading to his hotel. He had suggested that they got acquainted with eachother, just incase his family got nosy. She didn't like the idea but he was her husband and the one doing her and her mother a favor. She had to be as submissive as possible.
"Easter." She replied and he was taken aback.
"Every ordinary girl would say Christmas, I mean it's a very joyous occasion." He said, genuinely surprised.
"Well I'm not ordinary." She replied. "I'm a Catholic and the celebration after lent has always been sacred to me."
He nodded his head, crossing his legs and she wondered just what in God's name was on his mind.
"What about yours?" She asked, trying to sound interested.
"Thanksgiving." He replied. "That's when my family is always complete. We never miss it for anything in the world."
''So, you are a family man." She said and he shrugged his shoulders.
"Favorite color?"
"Black."
He scoffed. "Of course."
"Yours?"
"Blue." He replied and she scoffed as well.
"Of course." She said.
They stared at each other again. It was like a battle between two relentless fighters.
"What food do you hate the most?" Avery asked again.
The question surprised her and she tilted her head to analyse him. "Normal people would have just asked what my favorite food was."
"I don't care about your favorite food. I just need to know what not to feed you." He replied and she shook her head. "Sushi."
"Oh." He exclaimed, taking his time to access her. "Why?"
"I just don't get why rice should be treated like that and why I should eat raw fish with it." She replied. Avery nodded, understanding her reason immediately.
"What's the worst memory you have and can never forget?" He asked and the look in her eyes changed.
'My husband's death.' She said, but not out loud. It seemed he saw the hint in her eyes because he dropped the subject and turned to look out the window instead. "We are almost at the hotel." He said to her. "What else do I need to know about you?"
"Nothing." She replied.
"Good." He said, getting out of the car and allowing the valet to help her out. Together, they walked into one of his family's hotels and was greeted by the workers around. Inside the elevator, he turned to her.
"We are going to be sleeping in the same room, I don't know what twisted idea you have of marriage but this is a real one, at least for me."
"Same room?" Zoe asked, surprised but he ignored her.
"My mother will ask questions because I usually involve her in things I do, so this one might be shocking to her. So you don't talk, I do the talking."
"Sure thing." Zoe replied, worried about his stern tone. This was definitely not the man speaking and flirting with her in her mother's house few minutes ago. "But where are we going?" She asked when the elevator seemed to be taking too long.
"The penthouse. It is reserved for important people or events. We use it for family functions. This particular hotel is the closest to all of us."
Zoe nodded her head at him. "I do have one question."
"Which is?"
"What will you be getting out of this marriage? You can't just be doing it because you need a wife."
Avery turned his head to study her before answering. "Thirty percent of Madrigal Hotels." He replied and she opened her eyes in shock.
"What?"
"Yes." He replied, looking away and dropping the subject immediately. "I'm going into business with your mother."
Zoe clenched her first, trying not to get mad at him. It seemed like she and her mother were being cheated.
The elevator continued to count and when they were almost at the top, he turned to her again.
"One more thing."
"What?" She asked reluctantly and before she knew what was amiss, he grabbed her and placed his lips against hers just as the door of the elevator opened.
"Surprise." Rang out by a group of people and she could hear popping sounds followed by gasps. Avery made sure to give her a good kiss before releasing her to face the crowd.
"What the hell?" Someone exclaimed.
They stood there, surprised and Zoe wondered why Avery had decided to kiss her. He said they were going to be having dinner with his mother and siblings, why the hell were there more than three people in the room? The woman who Zoe registered to be Avery's mother walked over with arms wide open. She hugged Avery not paying attention to her."Happy birthday, darling." She said and Zoe turned to look at him.Birthday? Really? And when they had been busy getting to know eachother, he didn't think to tell her today was his birthday?"Thanks mum, You didn't have to do all this. I said I wanted just a small dinner." He complained."Of course we are having a small dinner. They were just paid to pop the balloons." Felicity replied, turning to her other son. "Aaron, off with all of them."In less than a minute, the room was cleared much to Zoe's surprise and his sister, a beautiful girl in her teens walked right to her."Another one?" She asked, eyeing Zoe. "What do you mean by another one? C
There was no answer from Mia and Zoe knew there wasn’t going to be any anytime soon. She turned her head back to the stage to witness Aaron pull his brother from the stage and have the security guards take him to a secret room.Aaron cleared his throat, smiling at the audience with an attempt to manage the situation.“Today is a very special day for Avery and the whole family, so he might just be a little bit on edge.” He began. “Let’s allow him to calm down and he’ll be back on stage in no time. Thank you.”And that was it. That was all he had to say to have the crowd relaxed and murmuring among themselves.Zoe shook her head. He might have been able to get through the guests but she wasn’t buying the rubbish. Especially because Mia and Felicity stood to go into the room where Avery had been taken to. Zoe followed them, wanting to find out just what the hell was wrong with the husband she just signed a document with few hours ago.At the entrance of the door, the guards gave her roo
She had a lot of questions to ask him, a lot of things needed to be explained to her. For starters why the hell was he acting like three different people? And what was the main reason he had agreed to marry her when he owed her mother no favor? Seeing what had transpired at the party made her doubt the real reason for their marriage. But those questions could wait. He was staring at her with a whole new type of look that she could not read.“Of course, I’m going to take off my clothes.” She said to him. “But the question is, will I be doing that in front of you?”Avery shook his head at her and walked over to dry his hair.“What are you? sixteen years old?” He asked her, staring at her from the large mirror in the ridiculously large room. She understood the need for space. God, she loved space but what the hell would they use this whole space for? When she didn't make a move, he pointed at a door. “Bathroom.” He said and pointed at the second. “Dresser and closet. Pick your choice if
Avery stared at her, angry at the question. It was bad enough that he was struggling to deal with how delicious she smelt and now, she was asking him this? How in the world was he supposed to explain something like last night to her? She would think he was crazy and he needed her not to have such thoughts towards him, even though he had only married her to clear his conscience. He tried his best to soften his features, regretting showing anger towards her. It would only make her think she affected him.Because she didn’t.Avery picked up his fork again and placed a slice of bacon in his mouth, very sure she was surprised at how quickly he changed.“Yesterday night was none of your business.” He replied finally. “Eat. You do have a long morning ahead of you.”Zoe shook her head and began to eat her food, letting go of the subject. Her mouth moved seductively as she gave a nod of approval to the taste of the meal. Her mother had not failed to remind him that she loved to eat, so he had
Avery looked at Jacob, angry that he could give him such a morning surprise but Jacob only shrugged his shoulders.“Not my fault.” He replied. “She insisted.” And then, he walked out of the room, leaving Avery to deal with the girlfriend he had lied to his family he broke up with, just to prepare himself for the agreement with Margery.“Well, look who it is”. Jasmine said, walking over to him. To his surprise, she slid her hand behind his head and gave him a sultry kiss on the lips, one that lingered for a moment and one he definitely enjoyed.“I saw you went out with someone new last night.” She said, using her hand to clean off her lipstick from his lips before touching his hair. “Why didn’t you tell me you needed a date for the party last night? I would have flown back to the city for it.”Avery moved away from her hold and sat behind his desk, crossing his legs while wondering just how to tell her he was a married man now.“I didn’t want to bother you.” He replied.“I was surprise
“What do you mean by wedding?” Margery asked her daughter, turning to look at Avery immediately. Avery on the other hand quickly gestured with a nod of his head to Jacob and the latter escorted the other men out of the office.“Is this what you do?” Zoe continued, clearly angry to the bones, making Avery wonder just what the hell to say to get her to calm down.“Calm down, Zoe.”“Was this how you agreed to sell me off? In this room? Like I was a piece of property?” She asked her mother.“What the hell are you talking about, Zoe?” Margery asked.“You promised me that there would be no wedding.” She screamed at the top of her lungs at her mother. “You said sign the fucking papers and get married. I told you that I wasn’t in the right state to exchange vows with anybody or walk down the aisle, but you never listen, mother.”Okay, it was indeed time for him to intervene, unless the fiery slim woman would be pulling at her mother’s hair.“Calm down, Zoe.” Avery said, moving closer to stand
Avery stared at his brother, breathing heavily over him, still daring him to repeat the ridiculous statement he just made. Aaron always tried to get on his nerves and using his problem to mock him was just so much he could take.“I didn’t say anything wrong.” Aaron said, shifting on his seat and giving everyone on the table a surprised look. “I only asked a question. Why in the world are you triggered?”Avery made a move with his shoulder until his mother stopped him, placing a hand on his palm. “That’s enough, Avery. Sit down.” Felicity said to her son with an ounce of fear in her heart. No one wished to mess with him when he was pissed because he could do more than breathe down your neck.“You could ask your son to stop making ridiculous statements, mum.” He replied, while Aaron shook his head at him.“You don’t know what the hell you put us through last night with your act. We were almost mocked, Avery.”“Getting mocked will be the least of your problems if you dare repeat what you
Zoe couldn’t believe her eyes as she struggled to release herself from Avery’s grasp. The look in his eyes screamed danger and if she didn’t do anything about it, he was going to kill her.“Let go, you are hurting me.” She pleaded with him, her eyes becoming teary due to fear and the feeling of getting strangled to death. She tried her best to search for anything to use against him on the bed, but couldn’t find any. Even the pillows were far from her and by the way, what would she be using the pillow for?“Let go, Avery.” She pleaded again, closing her eyes from the pain and terror.“Who the hell are you? and why are you in my room?” He asked her.Who was she? She wondered. This was the same question he had asked her at the party, only that this time, his voice wasn’t flirty. This voice was dangerous and it belonged to a dangerous man.“I am your wife, Avery.” Zoe replied, freeing herself from her thoughts and concentrating on the situation at hand. “I am your wife, please let me go.”
