"Hmm, what's the condition?" I ask.

He crosses his legs and with one of his arms resting on the arm of the couch, looks like he holds the whole of America in his hands.

"How about you sit first?" he says, gesturing to the couch opposite him.

"I'm fine standing sir."

"Two conditions actually. The first being that you address me as Damien not Mr. Black and definitely not 'sir'" he says.

I glance at Lucien and he gives me a sideways tilt of the head which I take as my invitation to sit and take my seat.

Damien stays silent while Lucien goes to the small fridge at the corner of his office and brings me a bottle of water. I open it and take a sip.

"It's a simple condition. Go out with me" Damien says and the water I'm about to swallow chokes me making me spill it on my t-shirt.

"Seriously D you couldn't find a better way to say that?" Lucien says as he pulls out a tissue from the box on his table, brings it to me and takes a seat beside Damien.

"What in the world was that?" I ask as I clean up the mess I just made of myself.

"I'm sorry. It came out wrong" Damien says and I'm surprised to see he's actually sincere about his apology.

"I meant to say be my date" and on seeing the shock on my face goes on quickly "to an event."

"If I get you, you want to attend an event with me as your date" I say and he nods.

"Why would you want to go to an event with me?"

He shrugs and says "No reason, I just want to".

"What happened to the other women you used to go with?"

"I've never gone with a woman".

That's shocking and he must have seen it on my face because he says "I don't like the whole paparazzi thing. I avoid these events as much as possible. If I must attend, I go there without calling attention to myself, do what needs to be done and leave."

That makes sense.

"I'm a sensible man" he says and I realize I must have said that out.

My mouth always be putting me in trouble.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean that negatively."

"I don't think you did. So, are you in or out?"

"Does my answer to this question determine whether or not I get the job?"

"Yes, it does. Instead of the regular interview, take this as your interview instead. I watch you interact with other people and we go from there" he says.

"What if I don't do that well?"

"You're not there yet and youre fidgeting already? That's not how we do business. Business is fifty percent believing in yourself and fifty percent putting in the work" he says in a voice that broods no argument.

Even if I decide to go, I don't have any cloth suitable for whatever the event might be and I certainly can't afford to buy one, let alone shoes and a purse.

"I'll take care of your outfit. You just have to show up" he says like he's reading my thoughts.

"No, I don't think I can_"

"Yes, you can. It's going to be the company's money anyways, after all you're representing D.B."

"I'm not even an employee yet" I say and he gives me a look.

"Oh sorry, fifty percent belief. I'm definitely an employee of the company" I say which makes Lucien laugh and even Damien smiles a bit.

"That's the spirit" he says and stands up.

"I have to go now Luce" he says as Lucien stands up and they do that weird guys slap on the back, shoulders jam hug.

I stand up too and pick my bag.

"I have to go too Lucien. Thanks a bunch for this, it pays to be your lecturer's pet" I say with a smile that he returns.

I give him another hug and see that Damien is at the door. Why is he waiting though?

I make my way to the door and he opens it, when I stop so he'll get out he just lifts those fucking brows of his and I realize he's waiting for me to go out first.

I can't describe the feeling that gives me, a guy has never opened my door.

"Thank you" I mutter and he just nods as I make my way to the stairs. The car park is the other way so I guess that's where he heads to as he goes the other direction.

"Damien?" I call and he stops and turns, "Thank you".

"It's no big deal, but you're welcome" he says and I make my way down the stairs.

MIA'S P.O.V

I have just two days to prepare for a charity event. I've never been to one.

Would there be dancing? Would we have to eat? How would I know what spoon to use fo what? A lot of questions run through my mind.

Damien said the company would provide my outfit but I've not even heard from him since that day.

I'm going through hairstyling videos when my door bell rings. That's weird. I didn't order anything and I'm not expecting anyone.

I peep through the peephole and there's no one there. I'm sure someone just pressed the bell though. I cautiously open the door s smudge and right in front of the door is a big white box with my name written on it in bold letters.

I look around for any sign of a person and seeing nothing, pick up the box and go inside, ensuring the I lock the door behind me.

There's a note attached to the lid that simply says "from D.B.", has to be my outfit.

I lift the lid and in it is what has to be a gown, in royal blue color.

The box is partitioned and in the smaller part is a pair of sandals the likes I've never seen.

The sandals are silver colored with a thin heel..It has a strap across my toes and in the middle of that strap, two straps go criss cross and go to wrap about my ankle.

They're the definition of fuck-me shoes. I lift up the cloth and it's sheer perfection. I've never seen anything more beautiful.

The neck of the gown is very wide making it fall off on one shoulder and fit perfectly on the other, long fitted sleeves, the neck to waist are somewhat free but from the waist to my mid thighs it fits me like a second skin and it's a free fall to the ground.

I can't believe something this exquisite is going to be on my body, and I don't even know when I start to cry.

I go to hang the gown in my closet when there's another knock on the door. What or who could it possibly be now?

I open the door and there's a small bag on the floor. I grab it and step outside to check if I can see the person who delivered it but I don't see anyone.

Once inside I check and get this, it's a freaking Tiffany's bag!

As I open the bag, my eyes widen in amazement. Inside, there are boxes of earrings, a necklace, and a bracelet.

I take out each piece and examine them closely. The earrings are silver hoops with diamonds that sparkle in the light. The necklace is a delicate chain with a diamond pendant that glistens as it catches the light. The bracelet is a silver bangle with a small diamond charm that dangles from it. It's my favorite.

This is too much for a yet-to-be employee. I wish I could call or at least text him to thank him but I don't have his number.

Now, I just have to figure out my hairdo.

DAMIEN'S POVLucien doesn't laugh when I tell him. That's how I know it's serious."Say that again," he says, setting down the glass he'd been nursing since I walked into his study uninvited twenty minutes ago."The mark hasn't faded. It's been over a month.""That's not possible.""That's what I said. In a boutique. In front of Mia. Which, incidentally, is the second time in one conversation I told her something wasn't possible without explaining why, so if she wasn't suspicious of me before, she certainly is now."Lucien drags a hand down his face. In all our years of friendship, I've seen him amused, irritated, occasionally furious. I've rarely seen him this quiet."D. Marks fade on humans. Every single time. That's the whole design of it — it's meant to last exactly long enough for the bond to be recognized by both sides, then it disappears, because humans can't carry a permanent mark without it doing something to them. It's not built to stay.""I'm aware of the mechanics, Luce. I

Dating my boss in secret is, it turns out, a significant amount of work. We've settled into a rhythm without ever really discussing it — I stay professional at the office, address him as Damien only when absolutely no one's listening, and pretend I don't know exactly what his hand on the small of my back means when he walks me to the elevator "as a courtesy to a valued employee." He's a terrible liar in the way that people who are used to always getting what they want are terrible liars — not because he says the wrong thing, but because he doesn't bother trying very hard.Priya, mercifully, has not caught on. Mariam, I'm almost certain, has. She hasn't said a word, but there's a look she gives me sometimes over her coffee that says she's known since roughly week one and is simply waiting for me to admit it first.Three weeks into whatever this is, Damien picks me up from a "work dinner" — a real one, this time, with actual clients — and we swing by a boutique downtown because he wants

  • The Billionaire's Bite   Chapter Thirteen

MIA’S POVI wake up in a bed that isn’t mine, wrapped in sheets that smell like cedar and something else I can’t name, and it takes me a full ten seconds to remember why my head is pounding like this and why I’m this naked.Oh.Oh no.Damien’s side of the bed is empty, but I can hear water running somewhere down the hall, and I use the minute alone to have a full, silent meltdown into his pillow. We had sex. I had sex with my boss. On his birthday. After I baked him a cake like some kind of unhinged Pinterest housewife. My shoulder aches, a dull, warm throb just below my collarbone, and when I twist to look at it in the mirror across the room, there’s a mark there—not quite a bruise, not quite a hickey, dark and strange at the edges. Great. Add “walking around with a hickey the size of a fist” to today’s list of problems. The bathroom door opens and Damien steps out, hair damp, sweatpants low on his hips, and every ounce of my composure leaves the building.“Morning,” he says. His voi

  • The Billionaire's Bite   Chapter Twelve

MIA’S POVThree weeks in and I’ve learned the rhythm of this place. Coffee before nine or don’t speak to me. Priya gossips like it’s an Olympic sport. And Damien Black finds a reason to call me into his office at least once a day, always with some file he could have just as easily emailed me.I’ve stopped pretending I don’t like it.“You’re doing it again,” Darcy says over the phone, and I can hear the smirk in her voice without even seeing her face.“Doing what?”“That sighing thing. The one you do when you’re thinking about your hot, broody, probably-secretly-a-good-guy boss.”“I do not sigh.”“Mia. You’ve sighed twice in the last ninety seconds.”I flop back onto my bed, phone pressed to my ear, and stare at the ceiling like it has answers. “It’s complicated, Dee.”“It’s not complicated. You like him, he clearly likes you, nobody’s married, nobody’s dying. Kiss the man.”“He’s my boss.”“He’s the CEO. Different rules apply to CEOs. It’s basically a movie trope at this point.”I don

MIA’S P.O.VMy first day at D.B. and I’ve already sweated through my blouse.I got here forty minutes early because I couldn’t stand the thought of being late twice to anything involving Damien Black, but now I’m just sitting in the lobby like an idiot, clutching my Chanel bag like it’s a life raft.“Miss Sanderson?” A woman with a sleek bob and a headset calls my name. “I’m Mariam, Mr. Black’s PA. I’ll be showing you around today.”Mariam. The one who was shocked he picked out my outfit himself. I file that away. She walks fast, the kind of fast that says she’s got twelve other things to do today, and I have to half jog to keep up as she rattles off department names and floor numbers I know I won’t remember.“You’ll be shadowing in Operations for the first two weeks, then you’ll rotate through Sales,” she says, pressing the elevator button. “Mr. Black wanted you to get a feel for the whole company before you settle into a track.”“Mr. Black decided that?” I ask, surprised. CEOs don’t

For some reason, I'm nervous about seeing my face. I open my eyes slowly and what I see utters me speechless. This isn't me.This can't be me.I turn disbelieving eyes to her. "Uhn uhn, you got that right sugar. That, is what I meant by real reaction.""Darcy, what did you do?" I gasp as I stare at my reflection in the mirror.Darcy beams with pride as she steps back to admire her handiwork. "I just enhanced your natural beauty, Mia. You look stunning!"I can't believe what I was seeing. My eyes appear brighter, my skin is glowing, and my features seem more defined. I look like a completely different person, yet still unmistakably myself."I can't believe this is me," I say, still in awe.Darcy chuckles. "Believe it, girlfriend. You've got the looks and the attitude to pull off anything."I smile, feeling a newfound confidence wash over me. I never thought of myself as a model, but seeing myself in a different light makes me realize that maybe I have been selling myself short."Thanks

"Come on, Mia. I've been asking you to do this for me for ages, can't you indulge me just once?"That's true though, she's been asking me to model for her for years now.
