AMELIA'S POV

The sound of approaching footsteps on the stairs jilted me back to the moments. Only then did I realize how much I had wandered into my thoughts. Almost immediately, I heard Nelson's voice.

"Where are you going?" his voice thickened with uncertainty as it cuts through the silence of the house.

Curiosity settled on me as I heard those words, but not only that, a response that was clouded in a female voice heightened my eagerness."To unpack..." the voice had responded.

I was more than ready to dig deep, just enough to know who she was. I mean who could have spoken to Nelson with so much confidence when I could barely look him in the eyes. I pushed the door open, my bare feet clicking against the cold floor.

But rather than see a quite younger girl; maybe her niece or cousin. But no! A matured lady was ascending the stairs. She looked fragile and pale, like a glass at the edge of breaking. Her left hand clenched tightly to the bag she was holding, and her shoulders t

I turned around quickly, trying to see the expression on Rose's face but I was caught off guard. Rose's eyes had suddenly turned red and her cheeks flooded with tears. Her once courageous expression had suddenly turned sober and pitiful. “What’s going on here?” he demanded again, this time more impatiently, with his voice low and guarded. Before I could say anything, Rose turned to him, her lips curling into a pitiful smile. "Oh Nelson," she began in a soft tone. "Amelia and I were just clearing the air. I mean I was only trying to familiarize myself, but she took it seriously," she said amidst her programmed tears. Clearing the air? My fists clenched at her lies. I opened my mouth to speak, but Nelson’s attention seemed to have drifted entirely to her. His eyes still glued to her empathetically. He stepped close

ROSE'S POVI hurried my steps up the stairs just as if I needed to be so fast before he changed his mind and sent me out of his house. My steps calculated and my mind reminisced on what had just happened now, I couldn't help but feel vulnerable and used. "But it's worth it," I assured myself, remembering the incident that led me into this act. "After all, everyone deserves a taste of betrayal and heartbreak," I muttered. Gradually, waves of memories came hitting against me like a train on the runway. Bit by bit, cold as ever, the traumatizing pieces came together again and I remembered how I had gotten into this trapping situation. ***FLASHBACK I had never imagined a day like this in my life. Or that my day could ever end like this. One minute, I was dragging myself to the comfort of my home after another exhausting day at work. The next, I couldn't hold back any piece of it as my life came crumbling right before my eyes. Like a bullet hitting its target, the sound hit me first a

AMELIA'S POV The unrelenting buzz of my phone shook me to reality. I wriggled slowly to the other side of the bed, my eyes were heavy and red from sleeplessness and continuous cry. "Oh my gosh! Another day to face Nelson and Rose," I muttered, forcing myself out of bed. I staggered towards the bathroom, my legs shaky and unstable. Each step reminding me of how much trouble and pains I've endured over the last weeks, especially since Rose's arrival. As I made my way out of the bathroom, my face drenched in water. A loud knock came on the door. My heart skipped a beat, making my breath caught in my throat. "Who is it?" I asked, my voice merely a whisper as I hoped it wasn't Nelson. I wasn't sure I was ready to start dealing with his unpredictability as early as that. It's been two weeks since Rose had mysteriously found her way into Nelson's house, and no doubt, she was gradually finding her way into him. Into his life. Rose's presence has severed whatever I used to think

AMELIA'S POVThe moment my eyes locked with Rose's, my heart skipped a beat. I slid my phone back into my pocket, but it was too late. She already saw what I was about to do. She smiled dryly, weaving her palms into each other, "I used to think you are smart, Amelia." Her words pierced through the lingering silence, her voice barely audible over my racing heart. "But with this, you proved me wrong." she said scanning the room with a quick glance. Rose's lips curved into a smile, one that didn't reach her eyes. I could see through the mask of deceit on her face even as she pretended. "It's actually not what it looks like but whatever you like, you can choose to believe," she said, closing the folder she was flipping through. She stepped forward, out from behind the desk she had been standing all along, moving towards me in a predatory style. She stepped closer, her eyes wide and glaring with determination. Everything about her was different from the Rose I used to know. And for reas

I felt a wave of relief wash over me. Rose's grip lessened against my neck until it gradually slipped away. I opened my mouth wide, panting heavily, memories of what had just happened flashed in my mind. Could Rose be so mean? Was she really going to kill me? But then, Rose's voice cut through the air again, jolting me back to reality. Maybe it wasn't over after all. "What are you doing here?" Rose barked again, putting the knife away, but her voice was as firm as it could. Stephanie, kept quiet, her head bowed slightly. The surprise on her face was beyond obvious. "I'm sorry, ma'am," she said, voice cracking. Rose's eyes turned red, she seemed to be losing grip on her emotions. Her voice echoed throughout the house as she yelled. "I'm going to ask you for the last time. What are you doing here?"Stephanie turned suddenly facing me directly, her hands pointed towards my direction. Her lips quivered and her hands trembled as she tried to speak, " The alarm... The emergency alarm s

You have thirty minutes to be ready, ma'am," Stephanie reminded me before dashing out of my room. Of course, Nelson sent her. I stared at my reflection in the mirror for the final time, I couldn't help but admire my sophisticating appearance. My hair was deliberately left flowing, its elm softly resting on my upper back. Yes, the time starts now. The time to let Rose know that I wasn't just someone she could control. My gown was a sleek, floor-length sheath made of silk fabric. The silk fabric skimmed over my curves, revealing my tiny waist and subtle hips, and the slender sleeves showcased my elegant arms. The low rounded neckline revealed my upper chest, stopping just right below my cleavage, giving away just the rightful amount that needed to be seen. "Damn!" I muttered. "This is the perfect one," I said, beaming with amusement. I stepped out of my room, confidence loomed over me like never before. My heels clicked against the floor as I descended the stairs. ALEX'S POV New York City! The beautiful city! Five years away! The cool morning breeze washed over my skin, sending a sense of familiarity over me. The beautiful streets welcomed me but not without its regular chaos. Hustling bustling. "Blakmoon Estate," I hailed a cab, sliding into the backseat. As the city blurred away as a result of the car speed, memories came back running into my head. First it was fragments. Then gradually, it became clearer and vivid. I remembered that afternoon when I was forced to leave the city. To say goodbye to the city I had grown up in. To leave without saying goodbye to anyone. My heart burned with bitterness as the thoughts swirled in my head. I hated to remember it but I couldn't run away from reality. "Away for a while?" the driver asked, noticing my uneasiness. "Yeah, you can say that," I said curtly, avoiding too much talk with him. He nodded without saying a word back. The remaining time of the ride was enraged in silence,

AMELIA'S POV It was such a long but fulfilling night. The type I haven't had in months. I slept soundly, as if I had no worries in the world. Slowly, I shook myself out of the haze which loomed over me, my neck ached in response to the sharp turn I made. The previous day was such a crazy one but I loved how it ended. A perfect example of happy ending. My phone buzzed; Clara. "Hey baby... Congratulations, I saw the news. You made the headlines..." I cut her short, my mind swirling with a mix of surprise and confusion. "News? Headlines? " I snapped. "What news?" The line went quiet for a moment. "Common! You know you don't have to pretend to me right?" she insisted. I sat up on the bed, "I'm not pretending, clara. I really don't know what you're talking about." "Well, since you badly need clarifications," she said again, her voice more calculated now. "Congratulations on finally being the billionaire's wife. I could almost say the woman inside the mirror wasn't me.Except for memories which brought back the pain from the past, there was no trace of the hurt anymore. The scar, disappeared and the wounds healed. This is the kind of woman I had wanted to be. An independent woman, with a world of her own. Ruling her life and not having to live in accordance with whatever standard any fucking person set for her. I styled my hair in the regular manner, applied my make up. My lip gloss was resting seductively on my small lips. One last glance at the mirror and satisfaction from my appearance washed over me, I headed out of the room.My heels clicked against the floor, a constant thing which usually announced to the house that I was ready to go to work."Good morning, mummy." I turned to see Daisy, sitting on her favorite couch in the living room, fingers crossed on her chest,

I stopped, gripping the iron fence to steady myself. Maybe it was just exhaustion. I hadn't eaten much lately and I had barely slept. Grief enveloped me, like a butterfly to a flower.'You'll be fine,' I murmured to myself. 'Just get home.'But with every step, my legs grew heavier and weaker, lagging helplessly against the dusty ground. It was as if a magnetic force was pulling my leg from beneath. My breath quic

And the scorching weather did not in any way offer fortitude. As the casket lowered beneath the earth, letting in what remained of a man I never thought I would cry for. A cold shiver pierced through my skin, and fresh tears streamed down my cheeks again.Beside me, Pastor Evans adjusted his posture against the wind, his kind eyes watching me before he opened his mouth. AMELIA'S POVI stared at the check in my hand as the car drove slowly away. I clutched it tight as it might vanish any moment from now. The number on it was outrageous, too surreal to believe.I felt like bursting into a long dry laugh. I mean just some hours ago, I was sleeping in my ex lover's house, reminiscing on the shock that came with Nelson's sudden request for divorce.I was still filled with pain and bitterness towards Nelson. One minute I was his wife, the next I was a piece of trash. I had hoped he would change, see me for my worth, and acknowledge me beyond the contract but I was wrong. Funny thing? I didn't realize I was wrong until I was forced out, with nothing to go back to. Not even a home. And now… this? A fortune dropped into my lap like a twisted fairytale. Only that I wish this wasn’t one of those crazy dreams, because I might keep living my life in the dream world. No, dreams didn’t come wrapped in guilt and regret. So it wasn't a dream.I felt the earlier feel

My eyes widened in shock, hands tracing the edge of my dress. I tried to speak but I couldn't, until I finally forced the words out. “But you almost gave me the check just now," I retorted slowly. "I'm sorry for the mix up, It was a mistake, Amelia. There's one more thing.” " And that is?” "A signatory is required.” What does that even mean? " A signatory?” I asked as if I didn't hear him the first time. " Yes, someone who signs to confirm your identity. It could be anyone, so far they have a certificate of citizenship.” With that I stood to leave. Fuck! I was just about claiming a life changing fortune. Why did it not work? Outside the building, I stood arms akimbo. Frustration washed over me fresh and undiluted. A salty liquid washed over my skin. I was sweating. Who could be my signatory? Clara, the only friend I had who could help out was out of reach. Minutes passed away, there was no one to call, no hope in sight. Then the name called in my head. 'Alex.’ “No," I s

I asked again, choking him with questions. My breath seized, heart pounding like mortar against pestle, forcing into the background, the gentle patter of rain around us. But he remained calm, his face, his look, everything about him commanded control. This couldn't be real. "What am I doing?" he said, his mouth advertising an elaborate smirk then he continued. "I'm trying to get back what belongs to me.. And why? Because I need to let you know that I still love you as much as I believe that you do as well."This whole thing was getting more unbelievable. I stared outside of the car, the rain was still coming in a furious downpour.
