THE VOWS
The hall was filled with influential people from all over the state, each one of them eager to see the union of the two most powerful families in the city. Every inch of the hall was beautifully decorated, there was flowers at every corner. Emily was seated in front of a very large mirror in the bridal suite, delicately touching her gown. Beside her was her best friend and bridesmaid, Cassandra carefully arranging the veil that flowed down her back. Cassandra looked at Emily's reflection from the mirror and sighed. “Are you really doing this Em?” She asked gently. “It doesn't really matter anymore Cassie, this is about my family now. Nothing else.” She said with a forced smile. “But it should, though.” Cassandra said with a breaking voice. “You deserve a real wedding, Em, not some business transaction.” Emily looked away, trying to hide her frustration from her friend. She could not afford to have a breakdown today, not when she's gotten to this level. There was no going back from this now. Not when her entire life was under the watchful eyes of so many. “Thanks Cassie, but it's too late to back out now.” Emily said. “I just have to get through this right now.” Cassie sighed, Emily had already made up her mind or rather, her family had. “Just know I'll always be right by your side. No matter how messy it may be.” Meanwhile, James was in the next room, adjusting his tie as his best man and best friend, Bradley, gave him a look over. “It's not too late to drop out from this James, you know that.” He said it half jokingly but there was a hint of sincerity in those words, James could feel it. “Tell them you're not doing it, tell them to fuck right off.” James scoffed, shaking his head. “And then face my father's backlash? No thanks. I'm just doing what's expected of me, I'm going to treat it like another business deal, because that is what it is, Brad.” “But it isn't just another business deal is it? That's poor girl, I can't imagine what she's going through.” Bradley continued. “Emily is a person, a person who has hopes and dreams, you're not going to treat her like some obligation are you?” James' expression softened a bit, and he looked down at the ring he'd be putting on Emily's hand a few moments from now and sighed. “It doesn't matter Brad, this is what our family wants and she's very aware of that too, besides, she knows what we're going into.” The music began, signifying that the ceremony was about to begin, Bradley gave him a final pat on the back as encouragement before stepping out to find his position. ********** As the doors opened, Emily took one final breath as she stepped down the aisle. She turned and saw James coming towards her, with the signature calm and collected expression he always wore and she ignored the knot forming in her stomach. This was it. There's no turning back now. When she reached James, he took her hands in his, offering her an award winning smile, in reality, it was really for the audiences, he was just playing his role really well. The officiator began, his voice echoed in the quiet hall. “Do you, James Knight, take Emily Chen, to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love and to…..” James cleared his throat and for a moment, a flicker of emotion flashed through his face but it was quickly gone, then he finally answered. “I do.” Then he turned to Emily. “Do you, Emily Chen, take James Knight to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love and to….” Emily paused for a second, a whirlwind of emotion running through her, it was so overwhelming that she took a shaky breath. “I…I do.” As they exchanged rings, both hands were surprisingly steady but it lacked any form of familiarity. Yet as their fingers brushed against each other, there was an unspoken deniable pause as unfamiliar feelings lingered there for a moment, before they both pulled away. The officiator smiled so widely you'd think he was the one getting married, he then closed his book. “Well then, by the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you, man and wife, you may kiss the bride.” James hesitated for a split second, he looked at Emily, there was a mutual look of understanding between them, this was something they needed to do, to seal the whole show. But they both silently remind one another in their head that this was just for show. James leaned down and gently captured Emily's lips in a simple and formal kiss, the audience ate it all up as they immediately started clapping. Emily forced herself to smile as she faced the audience with James holding her hand, the pose for the cameras, while the crowd continued cheering. ********** At the reception, Emily and James greeted different guests together, executing their roles perfectly as their friends Cassandra and Bradley watched them from a table with worried looks. “Do you think they’re going to be alright?” Cassandra asked with sadness in her eyes. Bradley sighed. He watched as James shook hands with a business partner, he was smiling but it looked fake and strained. “I really don't know, they've chosen this path or rather their families have. I just hope everything works out well for them.” Across the room Emily and James approached one another, resting on a table as they looked into the crowd. “Well, congratulations to you Mrs. Knight.” James said mockingly. “Why thank you, Mr. Knight.” She said, she smiled but James could see the tiredness in her eyes. “That was quite entertaining, wasn't it? You really do know how to put on a show.” James raised a glass to her. “Yes, yes, give me my accolade. Everyone's convinced.” “Right.” She replied, clinking her glass against his. “That's really all that matters, isn't it?” But as they exchanged a knowing look, they realised that maybe there was more to this union than they initially thought. They both could feel something inside them, and it was regret. As Emily wanted to leave, she caught sight of something that made her stop in her tracks. “Isn't that the man that was watching us during the meeting that day?” She turned to look at James dead in the eye. James dropped his glass as he said. “I think we might have a problem.”A MYSTERIOUS GIFTThe drive to the Knights Mansion was in awkward silence, each of them lost in their own thoughts, Emily had agreed to just stay in the Knights family house, no dramatic reason behind that decision. As they pulled up to the gates, Emily could really see the house in all its glory and she made a side note in her head that it was maybe bigger than her own house. Multiple staff already lined up to greet them as they stepped down from the car.“Welcome home, Mr and Mrs. Knight.” The head butler said as he bowed lightly. Emily offered him and everyone else a forced smile. “Thank you.” But the word ‘home’ felt exaggerated in her head.James walked inside and Emily followed behind him, everything was just as she imagined and more, the halls screamed luxury and it looked like they were recently polished, the chandeliers shined brightly and the air so cold, it mirrored the life she had just signed up for. “I guess this is my home now.” Emily said quietly, finally breaking th
SHADOWS OF THE PASTEmily's heart sounded in her chest as she looked down at the picture of Evans Royce, she had searched for a long time on the Internet before she got his picture. His sharp eyes stared back at her, she had an unsettling feeling about this man, his name alone sent chills down her spine but she couldn't fathom why. She knew that his involvement with the Knights was deeper than James was letting on. James stretched from his chair, reaching out to grab the phone on the table and stared at the picture intensely. “If Evans Royce is involved in this, then this isn't about some petty grudge, he doesn't seem like someone that will do something like this because of a slight grudge. This is something bigger.” Curiosity piqued Emily. “You said before ‘I remember him’ and now it feels like you're speaking from past experience, you're not telling me everything James. What did your father do to him?” James loosened his tie and sighed . “A couple years ago, my father funded Evan
DARING HEARTSThe sound of rain outside left the evening cool, and the frequent drips brought calmness to the tense atmosphere that was once between them. Emily sat at the couch that was positioned near the window, looking out and occasionally touching the raindrops that ran down the glass. Meanwhile, James stood by the door like a stranger, his hand gripping the makeup chair next to it like his life depended on how strong he pulled. None of them had said a word to each other after the conversation about the note 2 days ago. Emily finally broke the silence as usual, it seemed like something she would always do whenever she was with James, she's been questioning his icy reputation lately but one thing was certain, he was not a man of many words.“You know, for someone who's supposed to be newly married, this doesn't feel that romantic….”James chuckled lightly as he sat on the edge of her bed. “What were you expecting? Roses scattered around the floor and dim lights? I thought you hat
WE ALL WEAR MASKSEmily stood in front of her mirror, adjusting the emerald green gown that hugged her body perfectly. That was the fourth time she had adjusted it. She looked stunningly beautiful but she could not bring herself to care as she kept her mouth in a straight line. Today was the first time her and James were going to attend a public event as a married couple, but ever since that day she and James had that conversation, he had not spoken a word to her and now, he was completely ignoring her.Behind her, James stood by the door with a perfectly tailored suit that complimented her dress. He looked undeniably good looking and put together but his expression was uneasy. “Ready to go?” He asked his tone sharp and firm.Emily turned to him, her frustration surfacing. “Oh I'm ready to pretend to be a happy and loving wife to a person that hasn't said a proper sentence to me in days.” James's face hardened, but he didn't take the bait. He just extended his arm to her. “Shall we?
WHEN THE STORM HITSJames sat down in his sleek, and very spacious office where you could see all the buildings of the city through his window. He typed away on his keyboard, finalizing a deal with one of their many investors. His office was somewhere he had always felt carefree and calm, devoid of any personal crisis. The soft hum of the television place in the very end of the room was not much of a distraction to James. The daily updates of the world's problem had always been background noise to him but not today. The anchor's voice broke him out of his concentration. “Breaking News: Was the Knight and Chen wedding a hoax? We're believed to assume the joining of the Knight and Chen children in matrimony had been a strategy to merge both companies together because of financial issues. Anonymous sources provide comprehensive information on this but it won't be shared to the public for now. So really, do you think this union is a hoax?” James' body stilled, his hands hovering above t
AFTER THE SPOTLIGHT The events of the fundraiser felt like something that happened ages ago but James could not stop thinking about it. It consumed his thoughts or rather, someone did.Emily. The public had seen them publicly and they were completely praising the little act they pulled. But James found himself unable to focus. He would've been in his office, drowning himself in work as he usually did but here he was pacing in his library with just sweats, thinking about Emily. The kiss had meant to stop whatever rumour against their marriage being fake and a plot to save their families. But everytime he closed his eyes, Emily's lips were the only thing he saw and it ignited flames in him. And the way she reacted to it didn't seem like an act.And that was a very huge problem. Controlling his emotions and separating personal matters from business matters, but Emily had managed to cross those lines. She wasn't just another one of his business projects anymore. She was something mor
BACK TO WORKIt's been 2 days since James got that gut wrenching from an unknown caller. James and Emily obviously knew who had called but that didn't stop Emily's heart from quivering everytime she remembered. **two days ago. 8:56pm**“Well, hello there, Mr. Knight.” James looked at Emily, putting the phone down on the table and switching to speaker phone. “Who's this?” James asked and Emily gave a nod of head, agreeing to the question. “Oh, you know who this is, let's skip the part where you play dump. I'm coming for you. For all of you.” The voice at the end sounded augmented, but they knew who it was.“Why don't you come out from the shadows huh?” Emily said, voice sharp. “If you're so confident, stop hiding behind a mask.” A very sinister laugh followed after an awkward moment of silence. “Oh with time, Mrs Knight. And bother tracing this call, it's a burner phone.” The line went dead, James quickly texted the number to his head of security asking for a follow-up trace on
MEMORIES, OH MEMORIES Emily turned on her bed. Sighing, she stood up, headed to her phone, then dropped it back on the table it was. She had talked to Cassie like an hour ago, it would be too weird if she called back right?.It was a Saturday morning, James had gone to only God knows where, she was bored out of her mind and couldn't find anything to entertain herself with. She would've gone outside for a little shopping or something but that annoying tall man was always following her everywhere and he was damn good at it.Emily had decided to go downstairs that morning, to watch the TV, or maybe interrogate the house workers a little bit. She agreed the first one would be better, she didn't want to impose. As she decided down the stairs, heading to the kitchen to get something to eat whilst she watched the TV. A voice interrupted her.“Good morning, dear.” Emily turned to see an older woman, descending from the staircase like a literal goddess. Everything about her screamed eleganc
SHADOWS IN THE OFFICE The tension in the office was palpable. Every employee worked effortlessly and tirelessly on their parts. They didn't speak about what was happening in the office, but they knew what was happening. James walked into the conference room that morning, and even the receptionist looked drained. It got to her, too? He saw Isaiah and the rest sitting in their various seats. Emily sat next to him. A bunch of files were arranged neatly in front of him, despite everything happening in the office, he looked to be the one who was still well put together. James doubted if anything could disorganise him. Since Tokyo, things have been weird between them. And it so happens that this problem started after Isaiah went back to New York. They've been trying to manage most of their clients while him and Emily worked on damage control of the office.“You're here quite early.” James said as he dropped into the chair beside Emily. It had become a habit, staying close to her whenev
NEW YORK The sound of them landing broke Emily from her light sleep. She turned to see James still working on his phone. He didn't seem to get enough sleep these days. “We're finally back.” Emily said with a smile as he saw the familiar airport through the window. Don't get her wrong.Travelling to six different countries in the span of a month is a dream come true for anybody, but she missed the familiarity of her home. The whole trip had been a roller coaster for Emily. With the deals and everything that happened afterwards. The partnerships were fairly easy to secure, but there was one that made even James lose his footing. You guessed right. The Yakuzi's. Emily was right when she assumed the daughter was the one with the power in the family. She spoke so fiercely and authoritatively. Her parents just stood there like supporting Characters while she went on about what they were offering and receiving. It was really tricky trying to win them over, but Emily stepped with a ne
THE NEXT DEALFor the next five hours. Emily, James, and the others prepared for the deal in Tokyo. Emily had a feeling that it would be their hardest yet. And she prayed to all that was holy that it didn't go that way.Leaving Paris made Emily feel a sense of bittersweetness. She knew that they were initially there for business, but the things that happened after securing the deal was what made her emotional about leaving. Her and James's relationship was stronger than ever. They were married, but it felt like they just started something real.Something even better and stronger than the marriage. She knew they'd face different challenges along the line because this wasn't just about business anymore. It was about their future together. The future they were trying to build. Packing their things wasn't an issue. The airport wasn't even as crowded as she expected, so boarding their plane was hassle free. “You're all packed?” James asked. Coming to stand next to her as their luggage
PARISIAN TRUCE (PART 2)Emily instinctively reached out to hold the railings. James also put his hands out to steady her. She almost fell off the Eiffel Tower. Why would James say something like that when they were over twenty feet from the ground?“I'm sorry.” James said with concern. “I didn't mean to scare you. That wasn't my intention.” Emily put a hand on her chest, trying to steady her breath. She held onto the railings, supporting her while she avoided James's eyes.“No, it's alright.” She said, finally looking at him. “I was just shocked, that's all.” He looked at her. He wanted to know every little about how. How she could light up the room with just one smile. What her favourite colour was. Every little thing. His pulse quickened. He didn't want to jeopardise any progress he had managed to make, but he couldn't control himself any longer. He wanted Emily, and he wanted her now.“You know what?” He started. “Forget abou–” he turned to leave. “Do you mean it?” Emily said
PARISIAN TRUCEThey secured the deal. It was definitely more challenging than London but the partnership was finally sealed. Everything concerning business has been dealt with. They had three days left in Paris and Emily worried about being alone with James for those days. The next morning, the people in Paris are either morning people or they don't sleep. The streets are filled with people from different places. Different cafés preparing for the hordes of people, tourists walking around with cameras hung over their shoulders. James walked into the room from the bathroom, his hair was still wet from showering. He saw Emily working on something on her phone but he didn't want to disturb her. Things with Emily had him on edge, he was to blame after all he was the one who got drunk and made a dumb mistake. Thinking about everything that led to that horrible day made him uncomfortable again. The phone call. He planned on telling her about the phone call soon but in the meantime, he'd
PARIS Their flight was delayed, Emily wondered how that was possible because it was a plane owned by the Knights, so how does it get delayed? Apparently, there was a ruckus in the airport, and they had to close it down for a while. Emily sat with James by the end of a bench, Brad, Cassie, and Isaiah sat at the other side of the waiting area. Brad and Cassie shared curious glances as they looked at them from the corner of the room. James suddenly stood up, saying he was going to relieve himself. Cassie seized the opportunity, running immediately to her Emily's side. Emily eyed her suspiciously. Cassie looked from left to right to make sure James wasn't in sight, and nobody else paid attention to them. Isaiah and Brad seemed lost in their phones. “Hey, Em.” She started off. “I know something happened back there at the hotel. What is it?” Emily sighed. She knew it was about time people started getting suspicious, especially Cassie. She was a very observant person. “I just
LEAVING Emily's world shattered as she stared at the scene before her. James sat in the middle of the bar and a very beautiful woman clutched to him as they shared a kiss. A sharp pain went through her heart, she tried drowning out all the sounds in her surroundings but it was impossible. She choked out a gasp, She turned away and walked back to the lobby. She wiped unshed tears from her eyes.“Emily, did you find him?” Cassie was the first person to see her leaving. “Are you alright?” Brad followed with a concerned look. Emily tried hiding her face from them but they could tell something was wrong. “Everything's fine, let's just go.” Emily replied, clearing her throat. Brad and Cassie looked at each other, they knew something was wrong but didn't ask further.“If you say so.” **********James woke up the next morning with a sharp pain to his head. He rubbed his eyes, the lights coming in through the curtains making his hangover worse. The scenes from last night replaying faint
PHONE CALLAfter the whole deal was a success, James decided it'll be better to stay for one more. Look around the city, they succeeded in what they went there to do, might as well celebrate the victory. James had confessed to Emily the other night, he immediately left the conference room and headed back to their hostel. This had been awkward ever since Emily returned to the hotel too. James knew it wasn't the ideal time to confess to someone you're supposed to be in an arranged marriage with that he had somehow developed real feelings for, but he at least expected a reply from her. A rejection would have sufficed, but now he had to deal with the silent treatment he wasn't emotionally prepared for.Celebrating now left a bitter taste in James's mouth, Brad already prepared what they were going to do today after they finalised the deal but he had gone and spoiled it all by saying something foolish to Emily. He wondered if she would still want to tag along for the ride. They were in t
LONDON AND JEALOUSY The next day in London was a very stressful one for all of them. They got into the whole preparations for the deal that morning, this was an everybody's hands on deck type of thing. The main deal itself was by 6pm that evening so they still had little time to kill before then. The client had coincidentally picked out the hotel they were staying at for the deal and Emily had never been so happy. It was 12 in the afternoon, Cassie and Brad had decided to go out for lunch before the client arrived. Emily could smell something going on between them but she didn't want to acknowledge it just yet. She was glad her best friend and James's were getting along just fine.“Do you want to go get lunch?” James asked her, heat rose to her face as he remembered what happened between them last night. It wasn't anything like you're all thinking. The room was big enough for like five people but Emily couldn't let James sleep on the couch, she knew how uncomfortable that could be
