Juliette sat in her new office, and Michael watched her from the hall. Beckett went for lunch and Juliette kept tapping away at her keyboard, staring at the screen. He assured himself that she only focused on her work, and she wouldn’t focus like that without the medication he’d watched her take this morning. She didn’t work earlier because she forgot to take her medication. Michael found it sitting beside an empty coffee mug.

Surprised by his findings. He was amazed by the vast internet knowledge on this medication. Michael read about fears that people who take this medication could become addicted to the medication. There were an equal number of articles claiming people with Julie’s condition couldn’t get addicted to the medication because their bodies used the medication differently. He wanted to know what addict forgot to take their drug of choice. He had to agree with others those who claimed Julie’s body didn’t use the medication the same way. This had happened twice

Aria’s thoughts on the last few days, and as she changed her clothes, she makes some decisions. She’s really not happy and she can’t understand why she can never be happy. Are Leon and Michael, right? She’s the one ruining everything and everyone isn’t out to get her. She’s the one ruining everyone’s lives. It couldn’t be all her fault. Marriage. That thought scared her out of her ever-living mind. Could she marry Leon? This wasn’t the first time he’d mentioned marriage. Before this, every mention went nowhere afterward. She thought about it. She’d been the one to call off any marriage preparations by doing things to ensure they stopped the preparations dead in their tracks. Would this time be different? Or could she go to extremes again? Would she have to go to extremes? Did she have an aversion to marriage but lying to herself about it? She didn’t feel like she could think straight to make sense of this, and it hurt to think she might be the problem. A genuine problem an

Micheal spent less time at home during their honeymoon or any other time in their marriage. An occasional night in, but he usually insisted on quiet, and that she sat with him to watch whatever interested him. He’d always toyed with her body as they watched whatever it was. By the end of the program, she would feel flustered and frustrated. Then he’d enjoy a few rounds of sex with her before he rolled over in bed and slept. She couldn’t complain very much. If nothing else, Michael insisted on experiencing her orgasming around his cock, his fingers, or his tongue. Juliette’s mind flashed to the time he’d made her shatter with his thumbs there. It felt like he pressed her open as he watched her body throb and resist his actions. She’d felt no pain at all, but the resistance felt sinfully, delicious. Juliette pondered her options. He again slowly took over her life. Throughout, he insisted on making it a real marriage. She wasn’t sure Micheal knew what an act

“As far as I got with thinking about it would surprise you. One, I wanted to wait until our fifth wedding anniversary approached. Then we’d negotiate new boundaries and perhaps rewrite our prenup agreement. Two, what had me hesitating on extending the length of our marriage was a nonexistent issue. I received information about a rumour that you had a lover on the side. I had the divorce papers created because I was hurt. I’m selfish, remember. You were mine and only mine. Despite not being an actual marriage initially. It felt like one.” Michael spoke frankly as Juliette watched him. Had her actions made a difference with him? Or was that wishful thinking on her part? “Why didn’t you just keep looking for someone else to replace me?” “With Aria here in the condo, nothing changed. I wasn't expecting to see Aria so early in the morning. Upon leaving the shower, I instinctively thought of calling your name for a towel, not hers.” Michael glanced out the large win

“Julie? I thought you would have many things you'd like to change. But you’re silent. Would you like some time to consider?” Michael sat there and looked at Juliette across her desk. She’d chosen a simple desk with three small drawers under the tabletop and lots of leg room. Besides a filing cabinet and a bookshelf, she needed minimal supplies. Right now, Michael watched Juliette with concern. She looked like she’d stopped breathing and moving. He almost said more when she blinked suddenly and shook her head slightly. “I hadn’t thought about it. Why would I? You never cared about my thoughts or feelings before.” “Julie, stop it. We can’t get bogged down in the past. Right now, we’re trying to lay the groundwork for our future.” He watched her face, and she looked stressed. “Eat your food and think about the question. What boundaries do you feel you need me to abide by?” “If I say something, you won’t get angry with me in public. No embarrassing me

“Honestly? It was everything you did. But that came later. In January, once the party ended and I regained my sobriety, I could reflect on what had occurred. The situation didn't align with my expectations. I couldn't figure out why my past relationships couldn't fill the void in my life. I, uh, found myself coming home to get what I previously searched for from my other, uh, encounters.” He couldn’t believe how embarrassing it became to admit to Julie about his lovers and how it changed for him. “Until Aria, I hadn't had any encounters. I wasn’t interested in anyone else. As for Aria, I regret it because I know it has opened a door with her. She won’t let this end, and I’m afraid she’ll say it’s not over. You know how Aria is like a bad penny. She’ll keep turning up repeatedly.” He rarely admitted to having regrets, but in this case the regret ruined his life and his plans going forward. “I don't want anything from her anymore. The toxic nature of her life and the games she plays with

Returning to this place made Julie feel nervous. The anticipation of knowing she’d have to be sick for the next day or so didn’t help her sense of calm, either. “You look fine, Julie. There’s no need to pick at yourself, love.” Michael said as she picked at the sleeves and hem of her dress. She hated how it clung and felt like her skin couldn’t breathe. “I’m just wondering how to explain why I’m there with you. Everyone was there, and they watched me sign the divorce papers.” She was aware that he hadn't considered that evening. No one questioned him about what happened between them; everyone sided with Aria and her version of events. What story did Aria tell? Why did they believe her and not Julie? Simple. No one wanted to make an enemy of her father, Senator Cain. Who did Julie think she was? A nobody. The story Aria spread had Michael messing around with Julie, and Julie must have forced Michael to leave Aria. Aria explained her le

“But… Isn’t she? Everyone knows she blackmailed you into tossing Ms. Cain aside.” Edward didn’t expect Michael’s response to his words. His explanation spoke volumes. Edward Phillips listened to gossip and believed the lies. Michael laughed at Edward’s response, though there wasn’t much mirth in the sound. He found it the funniest thing he’d heard all day. “What gave you that idea? That’s false. I wanted her, sure. But Aria distracted me from Julie. Then Aria ran off with Leon hours before the wedding. I seized the opportunity and urged Julie to step in. It was in her best interest to marry me.” Michael’s eyes watched Edward like a sleepy predator. “Aria’s situation had nothing to do with Julie and everything to do with her actions. Julie left the bathroom in search of a tranquil spot to gather herself. However, Michael stood outside the bathroom door waiting for her. “Hey, are you okay? Any headache yet?” Julie wasn’t sure what to think. It didn’t surprise her he stood there waiting. The fact he stood there concerned and not angry was the surprising part. Julie couldn’t get over it. But he’d become distracted and annoyed by something or someone else. Now that he asked, “No, oddly. I don’t smell the perfume as much either.” Another thing she hadn’t expected. “I don’t understand.” Julie hadn’t lied. She recognized the perfume was dissipating because the club stopped using it a week ago. This caused Michael to smile with happiness and satisfied she’d not lied about it. To Michael it meant he could lend more trust in other areas of their relationship as he learned about her unique differences. Michael had investigated what she’d claimed, and it came up confirmed by

Julie removed her earbuds as she sat at her desk. She’d just listened to the ready-to-print version of her fifteenth novel. It was survivable, at least. She felt Stephen and her publisher would love it. She could hear everyone out at the pool having fun. Michael entertained the early bird parents and kids as they slowly arrived for Johnathan’s birthday pool party. Their children’s parties seemed to be an event where people wanted invitations and their presence recognized by their peers. Julie couldn’t believe the changes that had happened over the last few years. Johnathan’s birth shone in her brain as the mark when Julie knew Michael was hers. He’d not settled, but he’d found a different direction for his life that made him happier. Michael had help from the parents, nannies, and several staff members minding the chaos of children everywhere. They’d long ago child proofed the house, and currently Michael hid his genuine prized items in a series of locked rooms away from t

  • The Billionaire's Alternate Plan   Chapter One Hundred-Thirty-Five–Epilogue One: Aria: A New Life

Aria’s honeymoon was so much more than she had expected, and she used her social media accounts to poke the bear that was her father. She posted teasing photos of the place where she got married. Sold a few of her wedding photos to a couple of magazines with an interview hinting at why her father really wasn’t at her wedding and how disappointed she was at his betrayal of family ties. At the end of the interview, Aria made it good and clear that she’d broken off all ties with her father and she wasn’t interested in ever reconciling at any time in the future. He and his staff burned those bridges. As she went around Europe and saw the unique way of life there, some of it initially felt confusing and complicated. But she investigated other differences in how they treated people. It was something she’d not given much thought about until her life spiralled out of control and she finally understood why she was the way she’d become. It wasn’t pretty, and she had the photos and v

“Edward has everything in the car, Julie. We’re ready to head for the hospital. Now, you’re sure you’re okay with going through with a c-section? I mean, if you change your mind, you can still back out.” Michael could see how large Julie grew and wondered how his son hadn’t torn his way out. Michael worried Julie could no longer stand and walk safely. Life kept changing and he couldn’t believe he’d once thought this part of his life could go on without him. Over the last eight and a half months, he’d learned so much about a woman’s body he had to wonder if they were the same species. Women were so complicated, and Julie had some unique complications. A common comorbidity Julie had called EDS would complicate even the epidural she would need. Her joints had more range, and it caused her shoulders, back, and hips to be uneven. It could complicate administering the epidural. If she couldn’t get it, then she’d have to give birth naturally without it. This terrified Julie, alon

Leon didn’t just send her to rehab to just get off the medication. He sent her to a location that deals with complex abuse cases. She doesn’t realize it, but they did. The small plane landed at the secluded island airport, and Julie sighed in relief. There was something about travelling she disliked. To come all this way for a wedding for someone she didn’t like seemed crazy. But Leon was Michael’s best friend and Julie would muddle through it for five days there. What she still couldn’t get over was Aria’s request to come and bury the hatchet somewhere other than Julie’s back. She’d apologized. The hadron collider must have tested something again, and the world altered in reaction to the outcome of that test. That’s how Julie thought of why things changed in ways she didn’t see coming. Not that she believed the conspiracies; it was just a humorous way to look at her problem because Julie didn’t believe she’d ever find out the true reason these things changed. But jumping off into another timeline felt as sane as any other reason, and perhaps sometimes more logical. They stepped off the plane with the other guests, and a protracted line

Michael had said that he didn’t want to celebrate something that didn’t change. He didn’t want to admit he’d changed, and that changed their relationship. His explanation for this was he’d not been aware that he could be any other way until he’d seen how she lived in perpetual difference. Her effort to give him an easier existence while ignoring her own struggles had him questioning and rejecting much of his father’s teachings. It’d crossed over into his work life to and several people mentioned it over the months. So much so it became part of the water cooler gossip. Julie only found out about this after they’d gone back to the gym, and she heard the gossip at the juice bar. Michael hadn’t gone with her today as he now often did. Julie still struggled to become used to his constant presence around her. But she knew why this time around she struggled with it. Julie had to fight putting up a mask for the world and in that moment with Michael at the gym, she couldn’t figure

Please be careful what you say and do. This is something we say to all women who enter this family. Think carefully and long. If you stay, learn to keep your head down and your mouth shut. Today she would talk to the doctor about her pregnancy and what to expect, including her birthing plan. Something she’d been avoiding because it absolutely terrified her. With pain, she had an odd relationship with it. There was no normal response to it for her. It either didn’t register or she was in a world of hurt that no one understood. Medications didn’t seem to work correctly either when dealing with pain. She’d believed that she was imagining this issue for most of her life, but Julie learned not too long ago that wasn’t the case. Her body resisted many pain medications, and she did in fact register pain differently to other people. “Great, let’s get this over with because there’re things I need to get done today.” She’d been grumpy for most of the day.
